Is it too late to say sorry? Do apologies for medical harm actually create change? The Canadian Medical Association recently issued an apology to Indigenous Peoples for the harms inflicted upon them by the medical system, acknowledging a history of racism, neglect, and abuse. In this crucial episode, we delve into the significance of this apology and explore what true transformative medical justice must entail for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples in Canada. Our esteemed guest, Dr. Jamaica Cass, a First Nation physician, brings her invaluable perspective to this vital conversation. We discuss the limitations of apologies without concrete action and the urgent need for systemic change that respects and upholds Indigenous sovereignty within healthcare. Dr. Cass sheds light on the necessary steps to dismantle colonial structures in medicine, foster culturally safe practices, and ensure equitable access to care that is self-determined by Indigenous communities. Join The Gritty Nurses as we unpack what accountability looks like beyond words, and envision a future where Indigenous health and well-being are centered through the recognition of their inherent rights and sovereignty in healthcare delivery. More About Dr. Cass A member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, Turtle Clan, Dr. Cass practices Indigenous Health as a primary care physician on-reserve at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. In addition, as an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen's University, she currently supervises both undergraduate clerks and family medicine residents. Dr. Cass completed her family medicine residency at the University of Calgary, where she served on the Indigenous Health Working Group in the department of Family Medicine. Prior to her residency, Dr. Cass spent four years in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she completed her Medical Doctorate at Tulane University. With an extensive background in science, Dr. Cass earned her PhD from Queen's University in breast cancer molecular biology before pursuing a career in medicine. She was recognized with several institutional, national and international awards, including the American Association for Cancer Research MICR Scholar-in-Training Award, the Terry Fox Foundation Transdisciplinary Award and the Robert Sutherland Fellowship. While a student at Queen's, she was active in Indigenous mentorship and advocacy, serving on the Indigenous Council of Queen's University and the Native Students' Association, and mentoring Indigenous undergraduate students. Millions of women across the globe have undergone breast augmentation using a medical device called a breast implant. This is done for reasons such as cosmesis, sometimes called enhancement of the breast, but also for trauma to the chest wall or for oncological reasons meaning breast cancer. Any surgery is not without risks. Using a medical device like a breast implant is not different. This is the focus of our discussion on this episode of the DiepCJourney podcast. My guest is a leading expert in the field. We are going to discuss the medical definition, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment BIA/ALCL. This stands for breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma. It is an uncommon form of ALCL. I am speaking to Dr. Mark Clemens. After receiving his Medical Doctorate from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, Dr. Clemens completed his Plastic Surgery residency at Georgetown University. In 2010, he came to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas where he completed a fellowship in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Clemens is an active researcher whose interests include BIA-ALCL, long term implant outcomes, robotic-assisted, microvascular, and reconstructive surgery of the breast. He is the author of the book, Phoenix Rising: Empower & Transform Through Breast Reconstruction. I am honored to list this book on the DiepCJourney Resources tab under Books. — In Dr. Tiffanie Tate's book, Lillie and Linda, two little sisters, want to make every adult happy. It was just their mother and them living alone. During the time their mother had a new boyfriend, he helped take care of them. At first, he was nice, but then he changed. It took Lillie and Linda some time to realize that making everyone happy isn't always the best thing if it hurts them. Identifying abusive situations and providing directions for seeking help and reporting abuse are some of the goals of Dr. Tiffanie's work. Valeria interviews Dr. Tiffanie Tate — She is the author of “Bad Touching.” Originally from Compton, California, Tiffanie Tate, M.D. is a Christian, mother, servant, listener, and medical doctor, who now resides in the Inland Empire. Her interest in becoming a physician began when she was in middle school, while volunteering with her church to help the homeless in Los Angeles. She saw people who were both hungry and sick. She wanted to do more than serve food. She wanted to help them in a meaningful way. With a love for science and math, she applied herself fully in school. This was not easy as she had many distractions. Both of her biological parents struggled with drug addiction. And while she never met her father, she heard he was homeless and often wondered whether her father was one of the homeless she and her church were helping. With the loving support of her maternal family and specifically, her maternal Aunt, known as “Momtee,” Tiffanie received the love, support, and stability she needed to thrive. Dr. Tate earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a Medical Doctorate degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. After serving as a medical officer in the United States Navy during the Global War on Terror, she completed her residency in obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She practiced in Tennessee and California before sustaining a life altering injury. Dr. Tate has served as a volunteer within the local community, in churches, and with her sorority, given lectures to family practice residents, and in the numerous places where she has lived. She began writing poems as an outlet after she was medically retired following six surgeries over two years following an injury. She wrote her first book, FloweTry: A Collection of 108 Poetic Flows on Life, Love, and Liturgical Issues to help encourage and uplift herself and others. Bad Touching is her second book but her first children's book. In the Fall, her third book, second children's book, titled Little Engine Mia Sings, addressing bullying, will be published. She has two spectacular children in college—Nathaniel and Mia, and Dr. Tate enjoys singing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. To learn more about Dr. Tiffanie Tate and her work, please visit: Instagram (@drtiffanietatemoore) or Facebook — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.

Dr. Abraham Morgentaler is a board-certified urologist, renowned medical researcher, and entrepreneur most recognized for his role is elevating men's health to an emerging clinical specialty of crucial importance. In 1999, Dr. Morgentaler launched Men's Health Boston (MHB), the first comprehensive men's health center in the U.S. MHB's reputation as a center of excellence rose in lockstep with Dr. Morgentaler's clinical research on the relationship between testosterone deficiency, male sexual dysfunction, and prostate health. The findings were irrefutable and transformative. Dr. Morgentaler studies proved that too low, not too high, levels of testosterone could be a precursor for prostate disease. Dr. Morgentaler's clinical and research findings boldly inverted the traditional urological medical community's previous assumptions about testosterone levels. Skeptical and resistant, most continued to eschew testosterone therapy as an option for their patients. Nevertheless, he persevered, standing on the firm ground of solid medical science, positive patient response, and nearly 200 published research studies. Today, Dr. Morgentaler is internationally respected and widely known as the "Father of Testosterone Therapy." Dr. Morgentaler received his Medical Doctorate from Harvard University, completed his residency at the New England Deaconess Hospital and a Surgery Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Urology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School.

In this revisited episode, we are joined by Dr. Jason Schiffman. He is the founder and Director of Camden Center, a nationally recognized center of excellence for treating mental health and addictive disorders. First, Jason explains whether celebrities struggle differently than the rest of us and how the support system of a celebrity differs from the general public. Later, Dr. Schiffman discusses the complexities and benefits of group therapy for someone who is in the public eye. Tune in as we speak about the importance of vulnerability to building the foundation of emotional wellbeing. IN THIS EPISODE: [02:30] Do celebrities struggle differently than the rest of us? [08:50] How does the support system of a celebrity differ from the general public? [15:35] The problems related to having celebrities in group therapy. [21:35] The importance of vulnerability to building the foundation of emotional wellbeing. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The drive that can lead to a sufficient amount of work ethic to become famous is the same thing that can drive you to develop shame-related emotions. Support happens from anyone who really authentically cares about that person. Putting a celebrity in a group therapy session can cause problems in terms of the dynamic between that person and the other group members. To improve your psychological well being, you need to find the strength to be vulnerable. Dr. Jason Schiffman is the founder and Director of Camden Center, a nationally recognized center of excellence for treating mental health and addictive disorders. First, Jason explains whether or not celebrities struggle differently than the rest of us and how the support system of a celebrity differs from the general public. To improve your psychological wellbeing, you need to find the strength to be vulnerable. Ladd McNamara, M.D. is an author, educator, and international speaker, with a passion for health, truth, justice, and freedom. To have lasting happiness and health, one must have freedom to pursue truth in all areas, including the principles of wellness. He has made it his life’s work to first understand, and then educate others on nontoxic healthful modalities that support optimal health, including advanced nutritional supplementation and lifestyle modification. He also feels the duty to inform others of the risks and dangers of certain medications, toxic chemicals in our food and water, and unhealthful lifestyles. Dr. McNamara practiced as a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist in Atlanta, Georgia, making a difference in many lives. He incorporated quality nutritional supplements into treatment regimens, allowing for accelerated healing, and a reduction of symptoms of diseases and disorders. As a result, he developed nutritional supplement protocols for mitigating many disorders, which is the basis for his online program, Dr. Ladd VIP. One of Dr. Ladd’s greatest joys is hearing back from the thousands of people from around the world whom he has impacted with education and advice on optimizing health; many of whom were frustrated by the lack of results from traditional medical means. Dr. McNamara created tools to reach even more people, including audio recordings and books, which are now available as audio books on iTunes and Audible. Two of his best-selling tools are the audio books, “The Cholesterol Conspiracy,” and “The Power of Cellular Nutrition.” His other books on menopause, breast cancer, prostate cancer, pregnancy, and presenting quality supplements to physicians, along with “The Cholesterol Conspiracy,” have been incorporated into his online program, Dr. Ladd VIP. By adherence to the principles covered in the Dr. Ladd VIP program; specifically, a passion for life, improving personal relationships, and nutritional supplementation, people should be able to experience more joy and health. After Dr. McNamara graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University in 1983, he then graduated and received his Medical Doctorate degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas in 1989. He completed his medical residency in obstetrics and gynecology at The George Washington Medical Center in Washington, D.C. in 1993. During his Ob/Gyn residency, Dr. Ladd was awarded “The Teaching Resident of the Year” in 1990 for his knowledge, skills, and ability to quickly comprehend and apply various medical principles. He then received the “Teaching Resident of the Year” in 1993, for his passion and ability to effectively teach medical students. Dr. McNamara conducted medical research in the fields of human infertility and cancer. This research resulted in publications in the medical journals, “Fertility and Sterility” and “Cancer,” respectively. He was a wellness consultant on optimal health and longevity with the accounting firm of PriceWatherhouseCoopers, with his involvement in the “Partner Survival Program.” In this program he educated partners of the firm, both in group lectures and in personal consultations, on optimizing vitality, intimacy, and overall health. In 1997, Dr. McNamara founded the Medical Advisory Board for USANA Health Sciences, the manufacturer of high quality, science-based nutritional supplements. He served on the board for over ten years, assisting USANA scientists with product development, and educating medical professionals and the lay public regarding the application and power of nutritional supplements. After he completed his tenure serving on the Medical Board, he continued to serve in those capacities out of enjoyment.

Traditional medicine often prioritizes symptom-relief over addressing the underlying cause of illness. But if we look beyond symptoms and approach our wellness holistically, can our bodies begin to provide their own relief? Naturopathic medicine challenges the traditional standard by working on whole-patient wellness and concentrating on the treatment and prevention of disease by understanding systemic causes. Dr. Christian Gonzalez is a naturopathic doctor who earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Rutgers University and his Medical Doctorate at the University of Bridgeport’s College of Naturopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and is currently working at a holistic and integrative medicine center in California. Dr. Gonzalez joins Alexandra and Dotsie to discuss how you can take control of your health and give your body favorable conditions to thrive. You’ll hear how environmental toxins and stress are affecting your wellness, how naturopathic medicine helps cancer patients, and what you’re really consuming when you eat GMOs. This episode will empower you to see the whole picture of your body’s well-being and help you take effective action to change the course of your health. What we discuss in this episode: - How naturopathic and integrative medicine is different from traditional treatment methods - Where the real work begins: What Dr. Gonzalez tells cancer patients being released from treatment, and why he views cancer as a means of protection for the body - What you must be eating to give your liver some love, plus the benefits of detoxing and fasting - Empower yourself after a cancer diagnosis: Questions you need to ask - The dangers of glyphosate and how to lessen your exposure - How the Environmental Working Group is empowering the public: The EWG’s Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen, Skin Deep Cosmetic Purity Ratings, and what to look for in the ingredients of what you put into or onto your body - Detoxify your air with plants - Life influences our genes: How trauma and stress are stored in our bodies, what you must do to take care of your emotional and mental health, and how can take action against cancer by eating well and exercising - What it really means for food to be genetically modified, and how companies manipulate how we see GMOs - Teaching compassion from day one: Why it’s important to foster our innate compassion to avoid the moral disconnection between our truth and our plates - Follow Dr. Christian Gonzales on Instagram at @doctor.g_ and listen to the Heal Thy Self podcast on iTunes, YouTube, or Spotify. On the show today we have Dr. Karin Hehenberger. Some of you might know Dr. Hehenberger from her amazing work with her venture LyfeBulb, but for those of you who are not familiar with her, Dr. Hehenberger is a type 1 who is no longer type 1. Dr. Hehenberger has a list of credentials and professional accomplishments that make her the ultimate multi-hyphenate. She was on the Swedish National Tennis Team, she earned her Medical Doctorate and her PhD in molecular medicine, she was a post-doc fellow at Harvard, a consultant for McKinsey & Company, has worked in big pharma and start-up biotech companies, and the list goes on and on. What's remarkable about her story is that she navigated all of those challenging environments, and succeeded on a large scale, with type 1 diabetes. But as the years went on, and she experienced a period of significant burnout and poor control of her health, all the complications anyone with diabetes fears, started to set in. Dr. Hehenberger ultimately found herself with significant damage to her vision, and her kidneys were failing. She was on the edge of complete physical breakdown. Ultimately, it was her father who saved her live with an incredible gift, and then a few months later it was a donor, and a very talented transplant team in Minnesota who would provide Dr. Hehenberger with a chance to experience life without type 1 again. Dr. Hehenberger is the ultimate patient-entrepreneur and you'll learn through this interview that she is all in when it comes to finding and supporting the next generation of budding patient-entrepreneurs through her venture catalyst LyfeBulb. As I release this episode, Dr. Hehenberger and her team are over in Copenhagen Denmark for this year's LyfeBulb/ Novo Nordisk Innovation Summit where they will be working with some of the best young innovators in the world of diabetes. There's a lot to this story and our conversation is a deep look into denial, motivation, personal drive, an individual's love of science, and a belief that those impacted by a chronic condition should be at the center of creating ventures that will help minimize the impact of that condition on the world.
