Is it possible that you're illegally riding that Catrike, Terratrike. or even Cruzbike on the streets of America? It turns out to be a very difficult legal question fraught with insurance and financial implications. Doug Davis chats with legal experts Charlie Thomas, Steve Magas and Steven Hansen about laws excluding some 2, 3 or 4 wheeled bents from riding our roads. It's a real problem and makes touring a potential nightmare.  Next is a segment on the best approach to buying and selling a used bent. I talk to Chris Ferguson and Steve Wood who each moderate a popular Facebook classified group for recumbents. They and our own Larry Varney (representing BentRider Online Classifieds) will discuss all the dos and don'ts involved along with our very experienced panel. Also,Larry Varney and I were invited up to Grand Rapids, Michigan where we had two days to put the new Spyder-TerraTrike's speed machine-through its paces. If you had previously thought you'd never hear the words "TerraTrike" and "speed machine" in the same sentence watch on and be amazed.  Finally, we'll have Honza and Denny with the Recumbent News and Sports respectively.00:00:00  Intro00:00:50  What's on Today's Show00:02:48  Panel Introduction00:06:20  Sponsor Introduction00:07:50  Recumbent News in 5 with Honza Galla00:16:15  Doug Davis-Legal Labyrinth of Riding Recumbent in America00:21:27  Legal Expert-Steven Hansen00:40:15  Legal Expert-Charlie Thomas00:48:54  Legal Expert-Steve Magas00:58:40  Doug Davis-Summary and what our viewers can do to help01:15:35  Advice for Buying/Selling your Bent-Ferg FB Recumbent Trikes & Bikes Classified01:23:30  Best Advice for Buying and Selling your Bent-Steve Wood FB Recumbent Classifieds01:33:00  Best Advice for Buying and Selling your Bent-Larry Varney BentRider Online01:43:08  Review Team-TerraTrike Spyder and ATC trikes-Larry Varney01:55:10  Peter Stull stuffs two Performer trikes and more in a van.02:00:20  Denny Voorhees-Sports Report02:03:00  Sponsor Thanks02:04:40  Coming up next month02:05:38  Goodbye to panel and crew*Honza's News Report Links*Hase Bikes  https://hasebikes.com/https://www.facebook.com/watch/operationgarderlecap/https://www.facebook.com/paltineanuhttps://www.facebook.com/zicho.huhttps://www.instagram.com/solarebike/https://www.facebook.com/4PointsAustralia/*Guest Links*Doug Davis links to “Legality of 3-4 Wheeled Bent” reference pagehttps://www.bicycle-evolution.com/index.php/the_wheels_of_regulation/Steven Hansen  https://www.swhlaw.com/Charlie Thomas  https://huberthomaslaw.com/about-us/our-attorneys/Steve Magas  https://www.ohiobikelawyer.com/*Buy and Sell Links*Facebook Recumbent Trikes & Bikes Classified  https://www.facebook.com/groups/848211398622353Facebook Recumbent Classifieds  https://www.facebook.com/groups/534973056586751BentRider/Larry Varney  http://www.bentrideronline.com/*LBR Review Team Links*https://www.terratrike.com/performance/spyder/*LBR Crew Links*Recumbent News-online news website by Honza Galla  https://www.recumbent.news/BentRider/Larry Varney  http://www.bentrideronline.com/Doug Davis Bicycle Evolution  https://www.bicycle-evolution.com/Nina Paley's LinksNina's blog  https://blog.ninapaley.com/Nina's bike merchandise  http://www.palegraylabs.com/other-stuff-1/protective-bicycle-amuletPeter Stull  https://bicycleman.com/Josef Janning  https://www.facebook.com/josef.janning**Viewer Submissions or Questions**Send to laidbackbikereport@gmail.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/laidbackbikereport)

In this configuration you can bend the tube to specific angles and make sure the bends stay in plane. The goal here is to create two side rails that are identical. The seat webbing is sewn on to these rails. 2 - Needed weights This photo shows some more of how the bending jig was set up. Those are counter weights needed to keep the jig on the ground while the tube is being bent. 3 - Seat rail plans Mr. Carson provides pdf files that you can print out to be used as templates to match your bends. 4 - Marking tubes 5 - Sighting down tube 6 - Using marks 7 - Help with angles 8 - Matching to plans Pictures 4-8 show the layout of the tubes and how the marks are used to ensure you make mirror image rails for the seat. 9 - Matching sides 10 - Seat backs 11 - Drilling fish mouths 12 - Seat backs ready for trimming 13 - Finished seat backs 14 - Jigging up Pictures 9-14 outline the steps in fabricating the seat backs. The seat backs tie the rails together and are where the clamps that connect the seat to the frame grab the seat. This part of the construction can be overwhelming if you don't take it one step at a time. I had to constantly remind myself that building the bike was not a race but a journey, take your time and enjoy each little milestone. The last picture is the seat frame jigged up and ready for brazing. 15 - Seat stay one 16 - Seat stay two The seat stay was at first glance very intimidating. This piece connects the back of the seat down to the frame, supporting the upper part of your body. Its made of many parts, but all they are is cut up pieces of steel rod and threaded rod that are brazed together. No bending is involved only cutting and brazing and in the end it wasn't to difficult to fabricate. 17 - Seat stay three The completed seat connected to the frame. The seat is clamped to the frame using hose clamps and clamping blocks made of conduit cut length wise and brazed together at right angles. 18 - Seat webbing one 19 - Seat webbing two The seat webbing is sewn on using fishing line as described on the website, the only challenge is getting it nice and tight. Needle, line and a few hpr episodes is all you need to get through the task. 20 - Finished The last picture is the bike finished and ready for its maiden journey. Espeak script: Hello Hacker Public Radio, Brian in Ohio here. I am out from under my rock, and doing the last of the recumbent bike build episodes. My wife and I are visiting the land of our youth, Colorado, so my recording stuff is at home, hence the espeak rendition of the show. I finished building the bike a while ago and have been riding it around town to do errands and get exercise. I love this bike! The comfort level is unparalleled. Its like sitting in a chase lounge. No more neck strain or pain in the derriere. You don't need any fancy bike clothes, like padded biking shorts, in order to feel comfortable. The bike is fast and has responsive handling. Somethings I have learned so far while riding the bike. First, a rear view mirror really helps when riding on the street. Unlike upright bikes turning your head to look back to clear for traffic is not as easy. Next, the handling takes some getting used to. The long lever arm of the steering tube makes the bike feel jerky when you first ride it. After a while you'll see that a light hand on the tiller goes a long way to smoothing out the ride. It took me a bit of practice to gracefully get the bike started after coming to a stop. Because you can't stand up and hammer on the peddles, coming to a stop requires a bit of work on the gears. Being in a easy gear then shifting up as you get moving is the way to go. If you build one of these bikes, and why wouldn't you, you will have to think about storage because throwing a back pack on is not really an option. I found a bike rack that attaches to the back of the bike, a grocery store plastic basket and an instructive video tutorial by C J Hoyle on you tube took care of my storage needs, a link is in the show notes. The last parts that need to be fabricated to complete the bike were the seat and the handle bars, and all of there associated bits and pieces that make up these assemblies. Instead of narrating through all the pictures, I leave you, dear hacker public radio listener, that's interested to look at the pictures and read the captions yourself. My general impressions of building the pieces are as follows. The handle bars are relatively easy to fabricate but the big problem for me was the metal on the handle bars you use to make the tiller did not braze well with the conduit. In the end I had to resort to pop rivets and a through bolt to get a safe, sturdy connection. The seat is a collection of many parts and at first glance can be a bit overwhelming. By examining the photos on the recycled recumbent website and studying the plans, focusing on each step the seat came out fine for me, yours will too. The side rails are bent using a conduit bender and the challenge is getting the two sides close to match. Take your time and get some extra conduit, you're probably going to need it. The seat back stay is pretty easy to make, but it is made up of quite a few parts, requiring simple cuts and brazing to fashion it. The rest of the seat parts, the various fittings used to clamp the seat to the frame are pretty easy to make and I can't compliment Mr. Carsen highly enough for his ingenious design. Fitting out the bike; getting wheels, brakes and drive train together are going to be unique to every bike and will depend on how much money you want to spend, what parts you have laying around and what fittings you might have to create to attach the parts. I opted to use used parts that were at hand so I could get the bike up and running. I plan on upgrading parts, making changes and improvements after I've ridden the bike for a few months and gotten a good number of miles under my belt. I'll do an update show in the future to let you know what I've done. Will I do this again? Yes definitely I will build another bike, maybe a mach two or three, the building is fun the bike rides great. Mr Carsen sells parts, kits and completed bikes on his website. When I do it again I may opt to buy the seat from him. I would recommend this project to anyone. You can, go out and build one yourself. This is Brian in Ohio signing off for now reminding every one to: go fast; take chances.

Several years ago, Ben Menafee had a freak weightlifting accident, went into a coma, and woke up to a group of doctors telling him he probably wouldn’t be able to walk again. Today, Ben has a “motivational wheelchair” that he keeps in sight to remind him of where this journey started. He can now walk, on his own, 2 miles. Ben was told that “no gains could be made 12 months after a brain injury” and he’s made more documented gains in years 2 and 3 after his injury. “If you think you can do it, try it”  In this podcast episode, we get to hear exactly how Ben was able to achieve those gains and: How he responded when doctors told him oxygen treatment was “snake oil” Why “limited mobility” LiveO2 users can still train equally to fully-mobile users What Ben does to keep his body guessing How to use LiveO2 systems if you’re claustrophobic Why Ben’s physical therapist now wants to try his system! Back on February the 4th I was riding my road bike on a favourite loop near my house. I was about to hit a Strava segment named “Short Grind’ , given that it’s on a little kicker of a hill, when about 400 yards ahead of me I see something in the bike lane, that I can’t quite make out. As I get closer I pick out a small flag waving like the lure of angler fish. Closer still and I make out the unmistakable image of someone riding a recumbent bike. I pull alongside and attempt to have a conversation with the pilot. He’s a little out of breath to have a long chat so I keep going to the top of the hill and wait for him there. Thank goodness Jeff didn’t think I was some kind of axe murderer, and just to prove my theory that 90% of people are inherently good, he asked me if I was OK. At that point I told him that I run a podcast called Bikes And…and that I’d always wanted to interview someone who rides a recumbent bike. We traded information and a few emails later, a little cajoling from me, and I am so excited to welcome him to this podcast. Welcome! My guest today is Jim Jenson, who is the owner of “Fit for Life,” an adaptive fitness business. He is a certified fitness instructor and the host of the podcast, “The Essential Boomer.” Jim is here to talk about the specific fitness needs for baby boomers. Tell us about “Fit for Life” and what adaptive fitness is.  I have been in business for about ten years, located 20 miles south of San Francisco. I work with special fitness issues like MS, wheelchair-bound clients, and balance issues. I usually travel in a 10-15 mile radius to visit clients in their homes to work with them. I love helping people improve their lifestyle and their health!   How are you certified to do what you do? I’m certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), with both basic and advanced certifications. Special training is essential to prevent injuries, so Baby Boomers need to make sure to work with someone trained in disabilities and chronic issues.   At this time of year, there are many offerings of “free memberships” in fitness programs. How can people get the most from this benefit? Always work with a trainer, and be sure they are certified for your needs and goals. You really need one-on-one training for success and injury prevention. Don’t be afraid to ask about their certification, and check with your primary doctor about beginning a fitness program.   What kinds of exercises do you teach those with special challenges? I am a big fan of resistance bands and I take them everywhere! They allow core exercises even while sitting and help with balance and stability. Recumbent bikes are great for cardio workouts. I even use foam swords for “sword fights” with wheelchair-bound clients! Check out my website for Predator Bands and a video about a total body workout with bands!   What are the primary causes of balance problems? De-conditioning is the biggest problem. This is due to the lack of use of the core muscles. Other causes include medication interaction, chronic conditions, and vision/hearing changes. Remember, a previous fall increases your chances for another fall!   What exercises can be done at home to reduce the risk of a fall? Strengthen your core muscles and practice your balance. Don’t be ashamed to use a cane or a walker for extra safety. You can even work with a certified trainer to improve your gait.   What about exercises to strengthen the core? There are many “mat work” exercises, and yoga that is geared toward seniors can increase core strength and flexibility. One of my very favorite resources is The Core Program: 15 Minutes a Day That Can Change Your Life, by Peggy Brill.   What other things can boomers do to maintain active lifestyles? For longevity, cardiovascular exercise is preferred. It’s GOOD to huff and puff and then let your body recover. For quality of life, resistance exercises (like bands) are a great option. Dancing is also wonderful for balance, stability, cardiovascular exercise, and FUN!    Do you take any insurance in your fitness business? No, there is no insurance that pays for personal trainers except on the rare occasion when it may be included in a workman’s comp claim.   Tell us about your podcast, The Essential Boomer. It is the Baby Boomer’s Survival Guide! It’s my passion and what feeds my soul. I started it in May, and it has grown. I interview knowledgeable guests to give information to Baby Boomers. The podcast is connected to a private Facebook group by the same name.   Resources: The Core Program: 15 Minutes a Day That Can Change Your Life by Peggy Brill www.essentialboomer.guide  (Jim’s website) jim@essentialboomer.guide (Jim’s email) 650-704-0377 (Jim’s phone number) www.nasm.org  or 800-460-6276 (Contact NASM for certified trainers in your area.) George LAMBERT, Recumbent figure of a soldier (Unknown soldier) [Unknown soldier] 1928-31

National Gallery of Australia | Audio Tour | George.W.Lambert Retrospective

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 20, 2007 1:43

Recumbent figure of a soldier is a starkly simple, natural image of a typical Australian digger. Lambert portrayed this soldier with a bullet hole in his left breast, his right arm reaching towards this wound as if to still the pain, and through his frowning brow capturing the soldier’s last spasm. Particular attention is given to the accuracy of the uniform: there is caked mud on the puttees and the soles of the boots are shown as being slightly worn. In this sculpture, Lambert commented on the human condition, creating a peaceful vision of death by showing the soldier looking ‘through closed eye lids at something he can no more understand than you & I can understand’(ML MSS 97/3, p.105). On viewing the plaster the Sydney Morning Herald ’s critic was struck by the natural expression on the soldier’s face and observed on 29 June 1929 that the figure had a ‘smile of peace’ and read it as ‘satisfaction at a duty nobly done’. The soldier’s calm appearance led the Sydney Morning Herald ’s commentator to remark on 7 March 1931 that ‘death in war would be beautiful if it only came thus’. The soldier’s long, lean body was typical of the Light Horsemen in Palestine; his face was, as Lambert suggested ‘Australian yet handsome’ (ML MSS 97/3, p.105), and as the Sydney Morning Herald ’s commentator perceptively observed on 7 March 1931, like those on the Sydney beaches. During the war a number of artists portrayed their fellow soldiers as rough and awkward, but by the end of the war artists began to create heroic images in which the Anzacs were ennobled and portrayed as bronzed heroes. Lambert’s soldier is in this tradition: he is an idealised national champion who was part of contemporary cultural attitudes and values and who became an integral part of the Australian identity. Lambert received his commission to make ‘one bronze recumbent figure of Soldier life size’ from the Roman Catholic Sailors and Soldiers on 19 April 1928 – for £1200 (ML MSS 97/7, item 28). He had made several pencil studies for the figure then, once the commission was confirmed, made a full-size plaster figure cast from clay. His assistant Sten Snekker was the model. Snekker and the clothed plaster figure then lay on two benches, side by side, while Lambert explored minor variations in the dress on the plaster figure. From this Lambert moulded a second clay model on a third bench. He asked Murch to assist him in modelling the figure, and gave Murch credit for this by asking him to co-sign the sculpture. Lambert held a private view of the plaster in June 1929, before it was sent to London for casting into bronze. The final work was unveiled at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, by Archbishop Kelly on 26 July 1931, after Lambert’s death. As Australia did not have an official tomb of the unknown soldier until 1993, Lambert’s recumbent figure came to be known informally as Australia’s ‘Monument to the unknown soldier’.
