In this chat, Ramona and I discuss, at length, her newest record, No Sun, which came out this past summer. We discuss minimalism, history, how the lament as a musical form inspired a lot of this new material, the personal bent behind this new record, the "chill wave thing," and more. On today's episode, I talk to musician Ramona Gonzalez AKA NIte Jewel. Born in Oakland and raised in Berkeley, Ramona studied philosophy at Occidental College. She remained involved in music throughout her studies, playing in a series of rock bands with her then husband, and eventually starting her solo career as Nite Jewel. After a self-released six-song CD-R titled My CD, which caught the ear of New York's taste-making Other Records, Nite Jewel issued the full-length Good Evening through Human Ear Music. Since then, Ramona has released over a dozen albums, EPs and singles on record labels like Mexican Summer and Secretly Canadian, and her most recent album No Sun was released just last week on her own label Gloriette, and it's great! Lost And Sound In Berlin

This week, Ramona Gonzales, aka. Nite Jewel. Producer, singer, musicologist. We spoke about how her transcendentally good new album, No Sun, uses Moog and voice and is a break-up album, made largely whilst living on a friend's couch,  but is also part of an investigation into the agency of the female voice through history. As well as this, she reflects on her emergence through the LA scene during the MySpace era and the power of sound making off grid.Title music by ESOThe new Nite Jewel album, No Sun, is available from August 27th, listen here.If you'd like to help fund Lost and Sound for the price of a coffee, head on over to the show's Ko-Fi crowdsource

Rostam, Santigold, Dijon and Samantha Urbani discuss whether melody or lyrics come first, how to avoid the temptation to go back to tracks to make alterations, and how naming an album is the last bit of personality you can sprinkle on a project. Rostam is a Grammy-winning producer, composer, musician, and founding member of the band Vampire Weekend, producing their first three albums. Now a solo artist, he released his debut album Half-Light in 2017, and went on to produce Haim’s Women in Music Pt. III LP, as well as working with the likes of Frank Ocean, Solange, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Joining him is singer, songwriter and producer Santi White, aka Santigold. She’s released three albums to date, and draws influences ranging from 1980s pop and rock to new age hip-hop. Dijon is an artist whose reflective, folk-inspired R&B has drawn comparisons to Frank Ocean and Nick Hakim. He began producing music as part of the duo Abhi//Dijon whilst in college before establishing himself as a solo artist. And finally, Samantha Urbani is an artist, filmmaker, and songwriter who formed the influential DIY indie band Friends. She then moved to LA, where she lent her skills to collaborators including Dev Hynes, Nite Jewel and Zoe Kravitz.

Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer. For our third season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. At the beginning of Los Angeles lockdown, we virtually sat down for a chat with Nite Jewel, aka Ramona Gonzalez, to talk about all things musical, educational, societal, and revolutionary. As a musician and music production instructor pursuing her Phd in ethnomusicology, Ramona commented on how our desire for the mythology of artists is crumbling in the face of the reality of our multifaceted and often oppressive experiences within Western culture. More than ever, artists need support and stability as well as acknowledgement of their vibrant humanity to keep creating the works we love. While listening to this episode, Ramona requests that you support the Coalition for Humane Immigration Rights. Thanks again for listening! Guest: Nite Jewel The album: Kraftwerk: Computer World (1981) When we invited L.A.'s own Nite Jewel to join us, it probably shouldn't have been a surprise that she picked Kraftwerk's Computer World; after all, she's toured the world performing the album. In sitting down with us, NJ (aka Ramona Gonzalez) broke down how she first became obsessed with the album, walking the streets of Berkeley, thinking about German philosophy (no, really!) and why the LP is such a masterpiece of fusing a variety of musical elements all colliding in the early 1980s. More on Computer World How the album invented "computer funk" (Rolling Stone) The "sampling legacy" of the album (The Vinyl Factory) DJ Food's appreciation (Clash Music) More on Nite Jewel Nite Jewel on performing Computer World (Pitchfork) 2017 interview (Bandcamp) Interview with KALX (aka the best college radio station out there, according to O.W.) How Kraftwerk's classic album Computer World has changed people's lives. On their first wedding anniversary, David Sanborn and Jennifer Huber remember their Kraftwerk themed celebrations. Ramona Gonzales from the band Nite Jewel recounts how a car crash and a chance encounter with Computer World changed the course of her life. And Andy McCluskey from Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark recalls the Kraftwerk concert that inspired his musical career. Kraftwerk were forged in the shadow of World War Two, out of a desire to create a new, German music. Uwe Schütte from Aston University explains how Computer World embodies the politics of this time and points the way to a computerized future. Brian Carney recalls how the album's glamour and sheen changed his horizons in the industrial town of St Helens. And in South Central Los Angeles Greg Broussard, aka Egyptian Lover, shows how this album brought love into his life. Life, love and an electronic future as experienced through the music of this pioneering German band. Producer: Melvin Rickarby.

Circular Keys: Circular Keys are an electronic duo from the big smoke, Melbourne. Their enormous live-presence comes from the 6-string axe; Dennis Santiago shows you how much you can accomplish with an aluminium guitar and a table of pedals. While he’s preoccupied with laying down the law of audio-land, singer Phillipa O’Shea isn’t stuck in the background corner with the equal parts massive and angelic vocal chords. Room 40 invited them up to Brisbane to support Mark McGuire for the annual sound and media festival, Open Frame. Recorded & mixed by Joshua Watson Live at The Brisbane Powerhouse, 14 September 2013 Lucy Cliché: Lucy Cliché is Sydney’s Geneva Jacuzzi or Nite Jewel or Maria Minerva; an electronic artist flitting between the worlds of experimentalism and bedroom-pop. The sweat continues to drip from my fingers and on to tasty new platters of wax as Vancouver is pummeled with a heat wave. The show kicked off this week with some serious feminine heat, courtesy of midnight disco-murk goddess Nite Jewel, a new CDR of outtakes by the Magik Markers taken from their recently released 'Balf Quarry' LP, the new tightly wound Little Claw on Ecstatic Peace, and a new re-issue from Grouper. No wonder my palms were so sweaty in the booth this week.New 10"er by Nerve City has been receiving many hits at home, and I couldn't be more excited for a full length LP from them due in the coming months from local label Sweet Rot. Stay tuned for more on them...Managed to snake a copy of the limited to 200 cassette (sold only at the Captured Tracks/Woodsist fest that happened a few weeks back in NYC) by the Fresh and Onlys. Wow, can that band ever punp out the tuneful garage kickers. Two 7"s, two cassettes, an LP all in one year? Scratch that...two LPs. New full length of all unreleased material due out on Woodsist sometime in September. Band of the year?Ty Segall continues his onslaught of 2009 with a handful of 7"s, a new full length and a split LP with the UK's Black Time. West Coast tour coming from the one-man wonder. Have to fit that into my schedule somewhere along the lines...Coupla' new-ish numbers popped in the mail from the burgeoning Almost Ready label. The new Pink Noise is worth the peeping, but the best of the batch is the 'World Is Lousy With Ideas Vol. 8', which contains the best Blank Dogs song I've e'er laid ears on (played on this show, thanks to Grimmertown for heppin' me that one), not to mention exclusive tracks by Pink Reason, Times New Viking, Vivian Girls, Sic Alps, and a heap of others. This one won't stick around for too much longer. Finally got to lay my hands on a copy of the Amen Dunes LP, which is slowly making it's way up the ladder of best of '09. A lot of acoustic-based lo-fi downer-pop. It's a mouthful but worth the investigatin'.Moon Duo, which is Ripley the guitarist from Wooden Shjips, continues on down the trail being burned by his mothership. Get a hold of Aquarius Records for this one, as it seems to be disappearing fast. New Blues Control finally made it's way up to Canada, and was it ever worth the wait. 4 tracks of molten psych, submerged and raised up in all the right spots. Not quite as tops as Puff, but a necessary piece of future psych.Squeezed in a nice spotlight on Indiana cassette label El Tule, which just released the Ducktails side-project Parasails. More drifting beach psych from the reigning king. El Tule has also been pumping out some other great cassettes, two of which are highlighted below. Anyone interested in some Parasails action should drop a comment below.Until next week, keep yer records out of the sun.
