In this episode, Robinson and Alexander primarily discuss the latter, though they also delve into some of his other work. More particularly, they discuss Nietzsche's writings on eternal recurrence, the will to power, and morality, among other topics, as well as the perils of doing history as a philosopher, the infamous Elgin marbles, great works of literature, and personal style. Continuing our discussion of one of the fathers of Existentialist philosophy, Justin walks us through one of Nietzsche's famous thought experiments. Nietzsche thought he had found a recipe for living in a way that affirms life. Did he?
There have been numerous conspiracy theories spun about the Roswell Incident in 1947. Alleged eyewitnesses to the crash debris had come forward and raised questions as to what exactly happened out in the middle of the hot New Mexico desert. A darker side to the story began most notably with the publication of Leonard Stringfield's, Situation Red: The UFO Siege, a book that surmised the country was in the midst of a wave of increasingly violent UFO encounters, incidents that had led to physical injuries and abductions. Furthermore, it detailed how US government cover-up was not only alive and well, but far bigger, deeper, and more nefarious than anything the enthusiasts and researchers had ever imagined. I realized, while reflecting on the last few conversations of which I partook, that I twice made reference to one special book: “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” by Milan Kundera. Kundera, a Czech-French author who is (at the time of this posting) an incredible 94 years of age, is an extraordinary man. Twice expelled from the Czech Communist Party, he's a reform-minded liberal bohemian (in the best sense of the word) to whom my friend and prior guest, Noah Charney, introduced me. In his 1984 masterpiece, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”, Kundera employed his capacious intellect and the full force of his literary talent to create an unforgettable book–of which I STRONGLY encourage you to purchase a copy! The book begins with a contemplation of Nietzsche's terrifying doctrine of “Eternal Recurrence”, by which I've always been fascinated. From this doctrine (or its alternative!) comes the “lightness” of being–the meaninglessness that attends to a life whose fleeting moments are brief, vanishing, and never to happen again. Nietzschean philosophy permeates the work, but Kundera also explores political, sexual, cultural, and autobiographical themes. A man of the Left, his criticism of the Left is shockingly candid, incisive, and deep. The “Grand March”, in which he himself participated as a young man, is still going on today. Indeed, it's likely never to end. And his idea of “Totalitarian Kitsch” aptly describes the strange advertisements and messages (I'm talking to you, Bud Light and The North Face!) with which our social media feeds are now awash. Check your local library or bookstore for a copy of Kundera's work. This is the version I rented (and then purchased) from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Unbearable-Lightness-Being-Perennial-Classics/dp/0061148520/ref=sr_1_2?crid=BDHTWBV0CEMW&keywords=milan+kundera&qid=1685325408&sprefix=milan+kundera%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-2With affection,Daniel
Kierkegaard's and Nietzsche's ideas on repetition and eternal return are among some of the most complicated aspects of existentialism, let alone philosophy, yet they are also among some of the most profound ideas in philosophy. Today, we are joined by @philosophyforwherewefindou919 to discuss these ideas and how they can be applied to our lives. In this deeper dive into philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche we are going to look at his big ideas and his overall philosophy through the orienting generalisation of his thought as being health vs. decadence. Through this lens we can fruitfully place Nietzsche's "no-saying" work where he critiques Christianity, science and philosophy as well as his "yes-saying" work in Thus Spoke Zarathustra (with Zarathustra's three great ideas of the Ubermensch, the Eternal Recurrence and the Will to Power) and his fascination with the Greek god Dionysus. Nietzsche is commonly known as the Father of Existentialism but he could just as well be called the Father of Psychoanalysis or the Father of Postmodernism. Along with Marx and Freud, Nietzsche is one of the most influential thinkers in the past 200 years. ____________________
Friedrich Nietzsche is commonly known as the Father of Existentialism but he could just as well be called the Father of Psychoanalysis or the Father of Postmodernism. Along with Marx and Freud, Nietzsche is one of the most influential thinkers in the past 200 years. Nietzsche's ideas are famous (and due to much manipulation of his work, infamous) — the Will to Power, the Ubermensch/Overman and the Eternal Recurrence are the three great doctrines of Nietzsche's Zarathustra. They form his positive philosophy. This is the Health side of the equation. But these positive doctrines are only way half of Nietzsche's philosophy. The other side is his critique of Christianity and of Ascetic Ideals in general, his enquiries into the origin of morality and his explorations of the crisis of NihilismIn this brief episode we look at Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy through his distinction between Decadence and Health. This video is a taster of Nietzsche and will be followed up in a future episode by a much deeper dive. ____________________
This is a very special and different episode for the podcast. The question we are asking, do we return and live our lives over infinitely as Neville Goddard describes in his wheel of recurrence. Neville Goddard spoke in over 20 lectures of the unique idea that the soul in fact does not reincarnate but goes back in time, reliving the same life over starting from 20 years old, sometimes in the same timeline, sometimes in the past or future. Goddard explained that we do this over and over for 6000 years until we flower and experience the promise. In a recent interview with Josiah Brandt, he asked me if I had heard refernce to the Goddard's wheel of recurrence anywhere else? I was perplexed and began looking to see if there was any similar discussion by other classic writers. Initially I found nothing but eventually I came upon a concept that appears to have been quite popular in past philosophical descriptions by everyone from Plato, Pythagoras, Nietzsche, Ouspensky and Gurdjieff. This lead me down a wide rabbit hole of information and discussion of the concept of eternal return PD Ouspensky a russian mystic who studied with the Gurdjiefff another amazing and very different mystical writer, believed that we repeat our lives infinitely. Ouspensky believes that many of us may experience this lives differently each time, evolving, intuiting the future because you have already experienced it. Evolving in a groundhog's day lifetime. Goddard explains that he could remember these lives in one lecture claiming that he had died repeatedly in his sixties. Here I read each the majority of what Goddard has to say in reference to the wheel of recurrence and then explore what ouspensky discusses in his book the search for the miraculous as well as discussing other sources of discussion of the eternal return. Perhaps it is not parallel realities you experiencing but a memory of past lives as we move through the wheel of recurrence. Nietzsche's theory of eternal recurrence is the most difficult, most obscure, and most fragmented of all of his philosophical proposals. It has been interpreted in a variety of ways by a variety of different philosophers and in the end, there is no real consensus on its value, interpretation or remit. Furthermore, the theory is unfinished and not fully worked out, and was likely to contribute to the non-book The Will to Power. What I am going to attempt here is a reconstruction. If eternal recurrence is to be presented as consistently as possible, I need to explain it cogently as I can, as well as tie it together to other core concepts of Nietzsche's thought. But before that, we need to try and figure out exactly what Nietzsche means by eternal recurrence. These lectures are brought to you by Staffordshire University's Philosophy team. Debut EP from Italian Artist Veient Walker. There are moments in life where building a daily routine made up of repetitive and coded gestures and movements is a panacea for spiritual restlessness. This Ep is the son of one of these periods in the artist's life, consisting of days often the same as the previous and subsequent ones, an eternal Recurrence made of obsessive musical production alternating with long walks in the countryside and in the woods of northern Rome, with space for nothing else to occupy the mind; walking paths in nature interspersed with sudden moments of pause to write down ideas and corrections to be made to the tracks, once back home.

How would you respond to the offer to live life again forever exactly as you have lived it? That's the question Nietzsche poses with his eternal recurrence thought experiment. On today's episode we explore how the notion of regret plays a strong role in how this offer is treated. Art Attribution: Edvard Munch, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

This will be the only edition for this month due to Mick moving in shortly to his newly built abode, which is a month earlier than expected. If we have time there’s a possibility of a “best of” to fill the gap. As we rely on what goes on each episode monthly from the latest releases coming in, the range of music can vary. On this latest one, it’s more laid back with various ambient styles, symphonic & ethereal sounds, although there is uptempo stuff too. Austin moved to a dog-free but somehow still loud apartment. I try to take the air out of the overinflated image of Germany's COVID response. Austin shares his experience voting in person and we both complain about the GOP and the Electoral College. We end by talking about civility and promising to have this same conversation again. Maybe next time we'll actually do the YouTube episode? Spooooooky topics for our Halloween special.

The theory that times of strife produce great art is put to the test with Jay Roach's pandemic movie COASTAL ELITES (2020), and fails resoundingly. Bette Midler, Issa Rae, Dan Levy, and others deliver monologues excoriating the Cheeto-in-Chief while making clear that the title "Coastal Elites" is only barely ironic. PLUS: the death of RBG, the collapse of LaserQuest, and the unlikely return of Screw Magazine.

This is the third episode in our series on Nietzsche. It examines the controversial and oft-misunderstood doctrine of the eternal recurrence for what it might tell us about the structuring of time (here I draw on Deleuze) and about how repetition in music operates in popular music. I review some of Adorno's complaints about popular music and the distinction between progressive time and repetitive time. I then turn to a discussion of how the notions of the Apollinian and Dionysian are transformed in Nietzsche's The Gay Science, focusing on the idea that we ought to "become what we are." This leads to the examination of the eternal recurrence and a manner of reading the repetition in popular music as a liberating and redeeming quality, not, as Adorno would have it, a symbol of our unfreedom.

This episode of the Korea Now podcast features an interview that Jed Lea-Henry conducted with David Tizzard. They speak about the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, specific concepts such as the Will to Power, the Death of God, Metamorphosis and Eternal Recurrence, and how this offers insight into Korean society through issues like gay rights, sex, abortion, libel laws, the lingering importance of ‘keeping face', racism, international reputation, K-pop, religion, capitalism, and the pain of modern history. David Tizzard is a Professor at Seoul Woman's University, a columnist at the Korea Times, and is currently completing research on his Ph.D in Korean Studies. David has lived and worked in Korea for more than 10 years and his articles referenced in this podcast can be found at: ‘No sex please: we're Korean' (http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/opinion/2019/04/137_267508.html), ‘Are you a halfie?' Sydney-based DJ and radio host Andy Garvey is a real go-getter. Having been a regular fixture on the Australian airwaves for many years now, hosting shows Spin The Bottle and Future Classics on FBi Radio and Triple J's Mix Up and Friday Mix, her radio skills have also given her a home on Amsterdam's Red Light Radio with her Pure Space show. She's given her new label the same name, which launched at the beginning of this month with a four track V/A including contributions from E Davd, Reptant, Point Guard and Daze. Musically cruising through breakbeat, electro and techno, it's representative of Andy's tastes as a DJ and as a producer — her debut release Eternal Recurrence has just come out on Lobster Theremin. Fresh off the back of her first Boiler Room appearance at Pitch Music and Arts festival, we are hyped to have her at the controls for our Wednesday Alternative mix, a deep dive into her leftfield, experimental tastes... Keep your eye on Andy, she's definitely a name you'll be hearing more of in future.

Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. Tom Stern is a Lecturer in Philosophy at University College London, where he is also the Academic Director of the European Social and Political Studies programme. Before starting at UCL, he studied at Cambridge and at the University of Chicago. His research interests include Nietzsche and aesthetics. As regards Nietzsche, he has written a number of articles exploring various candidates for a positive ethics in Nietzsche’s philosophy. These include discussions of the concept of the Übermensch, of Eternal Recurrence, of Nietzsche’s conception of freedom and (for the Aristotelian Society) of amor fati. As regards aesthetics, his book – Philosophy and Theatre (Routledge) – is forthcoming in 2013. This podcast is an audio recording of Tom's talk - "Nietzsche, Amor Fati and The Gay Science" - at the Aristotelian Society on 21 January 2013. The recording was produced by Backdoor Broadcasting Company in conjunction with the Institute of Philosophy, University of London.
