本期行星酒馆是一场坦白局。对谈的嘉宾是纪录片导演Chen Siyi。两年前,Siyi的作品《我们在黑夜的海上》(Dear Mother, I Meant to Write about Death)在釜山电影节首映。 In this episode of Planet Speakeasy, I sit down with documentary filmmaker Chen Siyi for an open and candid conversation. Chen is best known for her film Dear Mother, I Meant to Write about Death, which premiered at the Busan International Film Festival. The film intimately chronicles her mother's battle with cancer and the emotional complexities of their relationship, earning widespread acclaim. However, the discussion in this episode goes beyond the documentary. We talk about cats, relationships, and the countless heartbreaks that somehow — in a painfully enlightening way — nourished our lives and creativity. If you've experienced heartbreak or are going through one now, we hope our conversation offers a sense of connection and understanding through our honest exchange of growing pains. 小
Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened marginally (略微地) down this morning from yesterday's close, at 22,691 on turnover of 5-billion N-T. The market rebounded from Friday's downturn on Monday - gaining almost 400 points on the back of a rally by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Analysts say market sentiment improved as investors reacted to gains on Wall Street at the end of last week - where better-than-expected nonfarm payroll data for September indicated that the U-S economy remains resilient. Environmental Groups Pan Recommended Carbon Fee Environmental groups are criticizing the basic carbon fee and preferential rates proposed by the government - calling them "passive" and too low to affect the behavior of big carbon emitters. The criticisim comes after a review committee recommended setting a basic carbon fee rate of 300 N-T per metric ton of carbon emissions. The groups says the basic carbon fees are too low to effectively reduce carbon emissions and companies could see them as an affordable (付得起的) operating expense or pass them on to consumers rather than invest resources to reduce emissions and the fees. State media today said Kim made such a warning in his speech at a university. Kim has issued similar threats to use nuclear weapons preemptively numerous times, but his latest warning came as outside experts say North Korea could ramp up animosities ahead of next month's U.S. presidential election. Without Your Head's Diablo Joe reviews "Seire" out June 16th on VOD and digital. @FilmMovement "In Korean folk traditions, "seire" is the twenty-one days after a baby is born in which they're uniquely vulnerable to bad luck, curses - even evil spirits. Many superstitions surround these first three weeks in a baby's life, and new mother Hae-mi carefully follows every one of them. Father Woo-jin is reluctantly willing to play along, but when he attends an ex-girlfriend's funeral, he unwittingly opens the door to to dark supernatural dangers. Plagued by terrible nightmares, the skeptical Woo-jin gradually begins to understand the seire custom, as he is forced to unravel the mystery of what is haunting him and his family. Heralding the arrival of a fresh new voice in Korean genre cinema, Park Kang's "chilling indie horror debut" (Screen Anarchy), an Official Selection in the Fantasia New Flesh Competition, was nominated for Best Film and captured the New Currents FIPRESCI Prize at the Busan International Film Festival, and also received a nomination for a Golden Eye Best International Feature at the 2022 Zurich Film Festival." It's something we don't like to speak or think of happening in Canada – a country that prides itself on welcoming immigrants and embracing cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity and differences Yet, many minorities contend with racism and intolerance every day. Perhaps, you are one of those people. In Riceboy Sleeps, Korean/Canadian Actor, Filmmaker, Writer and Producer, Anthony Shim, addresses these very issues; unlike others who have recalled the trauma of immigrating to this country in their films. Winner of Best Original Screenplay at this year's Canadian Screen Awards, Riceboy Sleeps is a 2022 Canadian drama that Shim also edited and directed. Based in part on his own childhood, the film centers on So-Young (Choi Seung-yoon), a Korean immigrant single mother raising her teenage son Dong-Hyun (Ethan Hwang) after losing her husband and moving to Canada in the 1990's to give him a better life. In Canada, they fight for acceptance and respect. Dong-hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates at school, and he isn't helped by the timid, distinctly Canadian racism of his teacher and principal, who consider the family “troublesome.” At work, So-young battles loneliness and racist and sexist comments. As they negotiate with their separate circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows. Unwelcome news sparks an unplanned return to South Korea — and the in-laws So-young hasn't spoken to in many years — but might open the possibility of mutual understanding. Shim's deep engagement with his subjects sparks profound, affecting revelations. So-young's joyride in a convertible heartbreakingly underscores the emotional weight of dealing with life in a new country and raising a headstrong child alone. An offhand remark in class that ends in a fight shows how tightly wound and ill at ease Dong-hyun is — even as a teenager. Throughout the film, Shim expertly balances the very different perspectives of a boy and his mother, poignantly capturing his loneliness and frustration, her isolation, and sacrifices. It premiered in the Platform Prize program at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, and was named the winner of the program's award. It had its international premiere at the 27th Busan International Film Festival in October 2022. I met up with Shim on the red carpet at The 2023 Canadian Screen Awards to discuss the message he wants audiences to take away from this movie. Host: Jesse HeijnisAan tafel: Maan MeelkerGast: Rabia SitabiMontage: Maan Meelker See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by Kenneth May, Jacob Smith, and Sebastien Simon. All the guests are currently living and working in Busan, South Korea, but hail from the US and France respectively. We got together to talk about the Liquid Arts Project and the 72 Hour Film Festival that will take place between November 19th and the 22nd - when they will screen the final entries. So...what is the Liquid Arts Network you might ask? Liquid Arts was founded in Busan, South Korea. It has served as a stage for the local community to share their talents since 2000. The community has continued to grow its roots within Korea, while simultaneously planting seeds across the globe. Kenneth opens our conversation with more details on how it all started. Sebastien, who serves as the main film expert in the group, and has also worked with the Busan International Film Festival amongst others...tells us how he got involved with the project and how it'd lead to him now teaching film at a university in Busan. Jacob, gives us more insight into how the 72 Hour Film Fest originated, it's previous incarnations, and his role in it. You could say more of a behind the scenes role...but integral, nevertheless. You'll hear about how the Film Festival actually works - and why the winners could be included in a special, out-of-competition section of the 38th Busan International Short Film Festival (April 2021). The team describe how you can participate…styles, genres, props and locations...as well as a recap of some previous notable entries. What makes the Busan arts scene so active and why experimentation is vital? As well as wanting to involve the local, expatriate and foreign student communities in Busan into the project. It's open to all… We also find out about the many other film festivals that take place in South Korea All this and your own shot at the Oscars...no kidding! Let's get right into it...The Liquid Arts Network Follow The Liquid Arts Network https://liquidartsnetwork.com/ https://www.facebook.com/liquidartsnetwork/ https://www.facebook.com/events/hq-bar/72-hour-film-fest-2020/967369587070891/ https://www.instagram.com/liquidartsnetwork/ https://pods.link/i/1515212073 Can't Find My Way Home Linktree https://linktr.ee/cantfindmywayhome Facebook https://www.facebook.com/expatmusicpod Spotify https://spoti.fi/3n7nl2p --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/craig-branch/message

Ladies and gents, we're back! A bit of (unintentional) break was taken, and no new episodes were recorded, so what better way to celebrate the end of that mini-hiatus by…not offering a new episode? This episode is a very special recording that took place in the year 2007. That year, the Pusan International Film Festival (now standardized as Busan International Film Festival) focused on Malaysian cinema, and held a seminar entitled Three Colors of New Malaysian Cinema. It featured the late Yasmin Ahmad, Ho Yuhang, James Lee, Liew Seng Tat and Wong Tuck Cheong as panel members discussing the then-direction of Malaysian cinema, with an especial focus on the independents. Friend of the show Maz Irwan Azani was present during that session, and he has kindly provided us with a recording of the proceedings. There are parts missing here and there, especially in the beginning and near the end, but nevertheless this recording provides a rare opportunity to listen to a part of Malaysian film history historicised in part by some of its most significant movers. Thanks once again to Irwan for the recording, and we hope you enjoy the only film podcast in the world to release a recording seven years in the making! Mike and Tim share their thoughts on the 22nd Busan International Film Festival.
EPISODE DESCRIPTION:In this "comfort women" episode, I discuss the UK Premiere of Tiffany Hsiung's "THE APOLOGY" documentary, related sexual slavery protests and touch on both the Busan International Film Festival and the Human Rights Watch Film Festival. This episode is in conjunction with and a companion to this article on Jason Verney's website: https://miniminimovie.com/2017/03/13/the-apology-uk-premiere-the-human-rights-watch-film-festival/Recorded on 12th March, 2017.SERIES DESCRIPTION:"F. L. I. C. K. S." is a podcast by filmmaker and journalist Jason Verney, in collaboration with his production company, NativeNomadPictures.com (NNP) and his movies & music website, MiniMiniMovie.com (MMM), and stands for:FilmsLifeInterviewsCameraKoreaSoundsSelf-quoted as: "An Odd Plod, Nod & Pod to 'NO-MADe-land'..."This podcast can be seen as an apology perhaps, to those who may be awaiting the yet to be completed South Korean documentary by Mr Verney. Jason talks about various aspects of Korea, the Korean culture, movies (both Korean and international), music, life, travelling & more. Like the #KDOC14 documentary project itself, this too is a work in progress. Over time it will evolve... be this in format or from an audio to a visual podcast.Note: "F. L. I. C. K. S." is the new name for what was known as "Jason Verney's PLODCAST". Previous potential comic titles for this podcast were Prodcast*, Probcast** and Oddcast*** but the original name of "Plodcast" was used. * To represent 'still in Production'** For either 'Problematic' or 'Probably'*** Simply because it's all kind of 'Odd'PLODCAST, although probably in existent by other broadcasters, was thought most apt... Not so much due to the fact that the podcast itself is slow, plodding or boring (well, you can be the judge of that!) but indicating that the Korean documentary, and other filmic projects are slowly, but surely on their way!"F. L. I. C. K. S." was more recently thought of a more memorable and relevant name & not only indicates that it's related to movies but also spells out what else it covers: Films; Life; Interviews; Camera; Korea; Sounds. According to the PISA education ranking, Korean pupils perform significantly better than most OECD students in all categories tested (namely: math, reading, and science).Yet this success comes at a steep price: the Korean school system is often described as nothing short of brutal. Its students are among the least happy and most stressed worldwide. At the core of this system is the Suneung (수능) examination which determines university admissions. Because only a fraction of Suneung takers will ever be admitted to the best colleges, competition is fierce. Desperate to give their children an edge, parents invest in evening schools, private tutoring and bootcamps, fueling an entire industry now worth several billion dollars. For this episode, we had the pleasure of interviewing Steven Dhoedt, who co-directed Reach for the SKY, a documentary that premiered at the 2015 Busan International Film Festival and was selected for the DOK Leipzig festival in Germany. Reach for the SKY tells the story of several students, their families and teachers, as they prepare for the dreaded Suneung. Steven Dhoedt is a Belgian filmmaker, producer and cinematographer. He studied film at the Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound (RITCS) in Brussels and worked for several years in Hong Kong as a freelance producer and director. He founded VISUALANTICS in 2003, a Brussels-based independent production house; his films have screened in numerous festivals worldwide and have been broadcasted in over thirty countries. He is also the director of State of Play (2013), a documentary that follows several South Korean professional video gamers.

Episode 3 of the Indie Freedom podcast. Writer/actor/director Carlos Ciurlizza joins us to talk about the making of his feature film Sebastian. With no agents, managers, or studio support, Sebastian has premiered in multiple international markets, including the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
At a coffee house somewhere in Busan, Colin talks with Sofía Ferrero Cárrega, film critic and enthusiast of Korean cinema. They discuss whether she'd recommend other movie-lovers move to Busan; how the Busan International Film Festival attracted her to the city (and the importance of its parties); why, in Busan, "everybody says yes"; the state of Korean film criticism in Spanish; how she first encountered Korean cinema, and how its auteurs got her to know Korea; the bad first impression Korean culture can sometimes give on film; what happens when you mention kimchi in Argentina; why her move to Korea became inevitable; her experience of understanding nothing in Korea even after having studied the language for years before arriving; what makes the dialogue in Hong Sangsoo movies easier to understand than the dialogue in other movies (and why Korea struck her as a real-life Hong Sangsoo movie when she arrived); whether she feels a kinship with Isabelle Huppert's character in In Another Country; the shock of finding out that, in Korea, she's white; the understanding she gets by standing outside society, and the "healthy jealousy" she feels for those inside; the difference between Korean conception of history and the Argentine conception of history; how Korea's heavily advertised matchmaking services speak to the cultural importance of marriage; why to learn about a culture from its independent films, not his mainstream one; how Korean social life "flows" from one place to the next; the role of the Seoul International Women's Film Festival; what happened in the world of Korean film festivals in the wake of the Sewol disaster, and how all the elements aligned to match the national mood; what it felt like to live in a silent Korea; the strong identification within Korean generations; her critical interest in connecting Korean film to the conditions in Korean society; why she waited on reading about Korea until she'd lived here a while, then picked up Michael Breen's The Koreans; the difficulty of explaining Korean food and drink to friends and family back in Argentina; the Korean penchant for "crowded" food and "crowded" web sites; how the culture has turned her "no"s into "ne"s; and what hour she (as well as the Argentine ambassador) woke up to watch the World Cup.
Near Busan's Kyungsung University, Colin talks with Jeff Liebsch, managing editor and partner at the magazine Busan Haps. They discuss what makes Korean baseball games more fun than baseball games in the West; the Toronto-Detroit sports divide in his hometown of Windsor; why a disproportionate number of the Westerners in Korea seem to have come from Canada; the difficulty of understanding Busan, and of leaving it; the traces of "country people" Busan's population has retained, even as it has supposedly turned international; the funniest Korean-film subtitle he's ever seen; how he learned to speak Korean without studying; how Busan Haps got started, and how he got involved; some of the strategies the magazine has used to attain prominence in the English-language media in Korea and abroad; how he observes people he spots reading the magazine; the importance of "beautiful pictures of food" to their Korean readership; the changing coffee situation in Busan, and what else has evolved since he arrived; the time when bars closed at midnight, and what it illustrated about how Koreans find away to get around everything; the mystery of how Busan once had seven beaches and no outdoor seating anywhere; what happens in Korean when someone gets a good idea for a business; the changes he now observes in the Korean beer scene (in all settings but the baseball stadium); Korean sports teams' ties to corporations, not cities; the reputation of the Lotte fan; his experience in Korea during the 2002 World Cup, when he first saw the Koreans "let loose"; how he felt during the "IMF" economic crisis, and what he thought when he saw Koreans turn in their own personal gold to save the country's economy; the Korean sense of collectivism versus the Western sense of collectivism; why Psyworld couldn't go international, and what its problems represent to him about Korea's "lack of a global vision" in some respects; what happens during the Busan International Film Festival, his favorite time of the year; the push to transform Busan into Korea's film center; the film events that go on in Busan even apart from the BIFF; the way people living in Busan tend to stick to ten percent of the city, and visitors tend not to see the "real" parts of it; how he makes sure to get the feeling of "actually being in a different country"; his experience working in Detroit, and whether it felt like a city with a future or a city without one; how he pronounces "process"; and what he likes about observing North America from a distance.
