We are now in Daylight SavingsTime and if you're like us, you're missing that hour of sleep you lost last weekend. Some say it's worth it because of the extra sunlight at the end of the day. But most folks would rather watch something entertaining than stare at the sun.So we've got the latest alternatives. We start with "Novocaine" starring Jack Quaid as a mild-mannered bank employee. He's has a rare conition that makes him incapable of feeling physical pain  But when the girl of his dreams is kidnapped, he turns his rare condition into an unexpected advantage in the fight to rescue her. Bill Bregoli will let you know if he liked it. Then there's "I Love You Forever" which is billed as a subversive romantic comedy gone wrong that follows a young woman into and out of an emotionally abusive relationship. Neil Rosen and Bill McCuddy both report what they thought of it. For streaming fans we have The Åre Murders" which is a Swedish mystery series on Netflix we saw. There's also "A Thousand Blows" which comes from the creator of "Peaky Blinders." It's based on a real life female gang in 1880s London. "Neil tells us about watching "House of Telegraph Hill" which starred Richard Basehart and Bill McCuddy fills us all in on the reality series :The Baldwins" and the action movie "Den of Theives 2." EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

It's classic noir month, a theme we call THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR, and every Thursday in March we go overseas and away from the Hayes code for some Noir classics beyond the English language. Some greatly influenced by classic American noir and one that helped influence it. Today we break the seal on Frederico Fellini for the show and discuss a whimsical crime tale involving some swindlers that may be amongst the worst scumbags we see all month. They dress like clergy and con peasants out of their money and it seems as much a playful hobby as it is a moneymaking endeavor. It's a “Left Handed Endeavor” you might say. It's all a party until wives, estranged daughters and children stricken with polio come into the picture. We're discussing Fellini's 1955 Italian crime tragedy “IL BIDONE” starring Broderick Crawford, Giulietta Masina & Richard Basehart. That New Year's party seemed to be popping. To kick things off in this episode, we'll be discussing the great PAUL DOUGLAS. You may not know his name, but you certainly know his face. With his somewhat craggy mug that usually sported a hang-dog look, he made a career at playing gruff, tough guys who were usually softies underneath, as he does so perfectly as LINDA DARNELL's rough-around-the-edges businessman husband in “A Letter To Three Wives” (1949). PAUL CHANDLER on THE INVADERS, THE WILD WILD WEST, VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, and BEWITCHED. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on September 24th 2023 This week, all the way from THE SHY LIFE PODCAST, PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself is back here on VISION ON SOUND because, well, he had an idea that he thought that I might like to talk about for the show, and knowing - as he does - that I'm always eager to grab at any such demonstration of enthusiasm from the team, he suggested that I might like to try it out. So, basically, PAUL asked himself the question about what sort of Archive TV he might be able to see if he was up and about and away from home and didn't have his extensive collection of television with him. What kind of programmes, essentially, could he watch on a website like THE TUBE THAT IS YOU that might just scratch that itch when he was far, far away from the shelves of YETI TOWERS…? Over the course of several evenings he picked out a few random choices of single stories from four American television series that were popular in the 1960s, and whilst narrowing this down to choices from a single decade might not be quite as completely random as he initially planned, it does give us the opportunity to return to this theme on another occasion by selecting shows from another decade. Anyway, future planning aside, the four very popular and successful series PAUL chose were THE INVADERS, a QUINN MARTIN PRODUCTION from 1967 which featured ROY THINNES as ARCHITECT DAVID VINCENT in an era of deep paranoia when you had to have a responsible profession in order not to be a complete “ALIENS ARE HERE” spouting crackpot, apparently. After that he ventured into THE WILD, WILD WEST featuring ROBERT CONRAD and ROSS MARTIN, before taking a VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA with RICHARD BASEHART and DAVID HEDISON, and ended up being BEWITCHED by SAMANTHA the urban witch as played by ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY. For THE INVADERS PAUL picked out THE TRIAL from the second season, from THE WILD, WILD WEST, he chose THE NIGHT OF THE SIMIAN TERROR from late in the third season, and from VOYAGE he picked TERROR ON DINOSAUR ISLAND from the second year. Finally, it's a pair of fifth season offerings from BEWITCHED, that he chose, in order to keep the running times consistent, the two-part story COUSIN SERENA STRIKES AGAIN. So if you want to watch the specific shows we're talking about after the programme, at time of recording PAUL found all of these episodes on YOUTUBE, and it's always a joy when I can present a show where my guest has done all of the homework. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Before he spent four seasons on a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Richard Basehart was a rising Hollywood star and made a visit to the Suspense microphone. His performance elevates "The Perfectionist," a far-fetched episode about a killer forced to improvise during his perfect crime (originally aired on CBS on January 21, 1952). Then, Basehart stars as Joyce Kilmer, the poet and writer who met his end on a battlefield during World War I in Family Theater (originally aired on Mutual on August 17, 1949).

From out of the blue, came TWO movies that star Vic Tayback AND Gloria Grahame, so we had to feature them on the podcast this time. We start off with 1976's Mansion of the Doomed, which stars Richard Basehart as a CRAZY eye surgeon who's lovely young daughter has gone blind following a car accident. He makes it his mission to restore her sight, no matter how high the karmic debt is. It is dark and twisted and exceedingly grim...we loved it! We follow that up with 1971's Blood and Lace, which stars the gorgeous Melody Patterson as Ellie Masters, who's mother is viciously murdered with a hammer in the opening moments of the film, leading to her becoming and orphan and "ward of the state". She ends up in an orphanage that is more of a prison camp with a lot of sinister stuff going on behind the scenes. Frequently considered the most transgressive PG-rated film ever released, this one is a shocker in the best possible ways. We loved it too!  Please send us your thoughts by writing to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also send us messages via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!

Kat and Samm return for episode 12 of Daughters of Darkness, where they discuss mad science in general and transplant-themed horror in particular. They begin with an analysis of the origins of mad science fiction in Gothic literature — partly a reaction to the European Enlightenment — through the fiction and nonfiction work of writers like Coleridge and Goethe, culminating in Mary Shelley’s seminal Frankenstein. The episode moves on to explore adaptations of Maurice Renard’s novel, Les Mains d’Orlac (1920), in which a pianist’s hands are damaged in an accident and replaced in an experimental procedure; but he’s convinced that his new hands belonged to a murderer and are possessing him to commit horrible acts. Beginning with Robert Wiene’s forerunner German expressionist film Orlacs Hände (1924), with Conrad Veidt, Renard’s loose plot thread moves through Maurice Tourneur’s similarly-themed, neglected La main du diable (1943) — a surreal, blackly comic work made during the Nazi occupation of France — to Karl Freund’s Mad Love (1935). Starring Peter Lorre as a crazed surgeon, the focus of this film is not on Orlac, the piano player, but on the demented Dr. Gogol, who is obsessed with Orlac’s wife, an actress in the Grand Guignol. Also discussed is Georges Franju’s groundbreaking Les yeux sans visage (1960), about a surgeon attempting to replace his daughter’s ruined face through nefarious means, and offshoots like Jess Franco’s Gritos en la noche aka The Awful Dr. Orloff (1962), as well as one of Michael Pataki’s few directorial efforts, Mansion of the Doomed (1976). The majestic Richard Basehart stars as a well-meaning but misguided doctor trying desperately to replace his daughter’s eyes.
