Hello, and welcome to the Women Leaders podcast! I'm Patti Phillips, CEO of Women Leaders in College Sports. Today, we are talking to Rachelle Paul, Director of Athletics at Saint Peter's University.    You all have heard of St. Peter's by now... the small Jesuit school in New Jersey that was the first 15-seed ever to make the Elite Eight during the NCAA Men's basketball championship.      Rachelle first shares her journey to the AD chair and emphasizes the importance of relationships throughout her career.  And in her short time as AD at Saint Peter's, Rachelle has faced several historical moments: navigating COVID in her first year and then navigating the historic run of her MBB team during this year's March Madness.     Listen in to hear the behind the scenes of that historic run, and all of the challenges, learnings, and excitement, from an athletic director's perspective.  Rachelle shares many great insights on how to build on that type of momentum for both the athletic program and the university.  We talk quite a bit about sport being a unifier, especially teams that win, and that winning is contagious. And I happen to really love the advice she gives at the end.     It's such a fun conversation!  Don't miss a moment... And remember, we are Women Leaders!

We're coming off a spectacular 2022 season called March Madness, where all of America stops and pays attention to college basketball, whether its men's or women's. If we're lucky, fans can be treated to magical moments, even magical runs where a team plays well above its tournament seeding. In 2022, Saint Peter's University from New Jersey made one of those magical runs as the 15th seed, upsetting perennial tourney favorite Kentucky in their opening game, followed by another upset of Murray State. Almost immediately, social media and journalists crowed that these two wins would elevate Saint Peter's financially and reputationally. Wild claims were asserted about what impact a Cinderella run might mean. Conjecture is one thing, but actual analysis and research is quite another. My guests today have done the research on the benefits of a run through the NCAA tournament, winning at least 2 games as the lower seed. They will walk us through what the statistics show, and the actual benefits of, a winning streak in the post season. This is especially important for senior campus leaders who want to separate fact from fiction. I'm joined by Drs. Kurt Rotthoff, Trevor Collier and Nancy Haskell. Dr. Rotthoff is a Professor of Economics and Finance at Seton Hall University; Dr. Collier is a Dean and Professor of Economics at the University of Dayton; and Dr. Haskell is an Assistant Professor of Economics, also at the University of Dayton. Welcome to a special March Madness episode of AMDG. As of Thursday afternoon, there are three Jesuit teams left in the women's and men's NCAA basketball tournaments. On the women's side, the Creighton Bluejays have made their first ever Sweet Sixteen. On the men's side, number-one overall seed Gonzaga have secured their incredible seventh straight trip to the Sweet Sixteen. But the clear top story in all of college basketball this March is the success of the Saint Peter's University Peacocks. A 15-seed, their men's squad pulled off a historic upset of no. 2 Kentucky last Thursday night. The New York Times reported the disparities between the two schools' student body size and athletic budgets and basketball history: “Kentucky has about 32,000 students, St. Peter's approximately 2,300. Kentucky has won eight N.C.A.A. championships; St. Peter's had never won an N.C.A.A. Tournament game before Thursday. St. Peter's men's basketball coach Shaheen Holloway made $266,344 in 2019; Kentucky head coach John Calipari's base salary is $8.5 million. St. Peter's basketball revenue was $1.6 million in 2019-20, while Kentucky's was $29.3 million.” The Peacocks followed up their huge win with a thorough dismantling of 7-seed Murray State. They face Purdue on Friday in Philadelphia. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked university president Dr. Gene Cornacchia what the experience has been like for Saint Peter's, a small Jesuit university in Jersey City, NJ, that's not used to this sort of spotlight. Dr. Cornacchia has been president at St. Peter's since 2007, and he's seen a lot of stuff, but nothing quite like these past few days. He accompanied the team in Indianapolis and talked about what it was like to be in the arena for the victories. But Dr. Cornacchia was even more excited to talk about the university he serves, which is one of the most diverse Catholic universities you'll find anywhere: about three-quarters of the undergraduate student body are people of color. It ranks as New Jersey's best-value school per US News and World Report. It's a national leader on Money Magazine's list of transformative schools, which means it enables students to beat the odds and produce outcomes that are better than expected given their academic and economic backgrounds. We here at the Jesuit Conference are so happy for Dr. Cornacchia and the school, and we're glad we can help spread the word about Saint Peter's. AMDG is a production of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States.

In his new book, The Economy of Ethnic Cleansing: The Transformation of German-Czech Borderlands after World War II (Cambridge University Press, 2017), David Gerlach, Associate Professor of History at Saint Peter's University, examines the expulsion of nearly 3 million Germans from the Czech-German borderlands. Dr. Gerlach looks extensively at the economic factors that led to the expulsion of Germans from this area. He argues convincingly how the promise of property and social mobility contributed to the course and outcomes of ethnic cleansing. Ultimately, he demonstrates how the conflict between Czechs and Germans helped to facilitate the rise of the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia.
