It's the first episode we're recording in 2022, and we have THOUGHTS! TO! SHARE! We discuss the It's Not That Deep archetype, the wackiest (slash most ingenious) “work smarter and not harder” moments, and acknowledgement sections—unskippable, if you ask us. Related to the It's Not That Deep mentality: Tune into our perfectionism ep (and maybe pick up Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, too.). Two essays on the acknowledgment section: "With a Little Help From Their Friends (and Agents and Librarians and Fact-Checkers ...)" by Jennifer Senior and "Against Acknowledgments" by Sam Sacks. One of our favorite acknowledgement sections of late was from Black Buck—and don't worry, we asked the author Mateo Askaripour about it when we interviewed him. Have thoughts (or a story about an extreme case of working smarter and not harder)? We want to hear them at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, or @athingortwohq!If you like this, you'll love Secret Menu. We think! Produced by Dear Media
Another DC Sentinel Sam joins us, this time Sacks, to discuss how posting broke a once great journalist with terrible politics, Glenn Greenwald. We give the man all due respect for his work on the Snowden Leaks and Vaza Jato, but try to make sense of his nonsensical blend of right wing politics, unhinged dedication to culture wars he is on the wrong side of, and most of all his original take on belligerent contrarianism which spawned a whole generation of annoying Twitter guys. It's the first episode of "The Crazy Pill." This is the companion podcast to "Take Your Pills, Psychopath!" TCP promises to take deep dives into what's really going on politically and socially, pushing through the divisive left-right propaganda that keeps us all divided and, thus, controlled. "The Crazy Pill" is where we swallow insanity in order to puke out propaganda (TM). JFOD is fortunate enough to be friends with a number of the best independent journalists in the country. He picks their brains about the craziest stories they are tracking. In this inaugural episode, John interviews the brilliant Sam Sacks. Sam is an independent journalist with The District Sentinel and Means Morning News. He lets the Psycho community in on what's really up with the USPS scandal, and he explains just how in bad faith these covid-related bad faith bailouts have been, plus so much more interesting stories that are purposefully kept off of our radar. American comrades Sam Sacks and Sam Knight were kind enough to invite Laura onto their excellent newscast, The District Sentinel, to talk about Donald Trump's visit to the UK and the current wave of protests, plus plug the Durham Miners' Gala and explain why her dearly departed @thisgeordielass account was suspended by Twitter. It was a premium episode on the DC guys' Patreon but, even kinder than their invitation in the first place, they gave us the episode to distribute amongst our disciples as we see fit. With just days before voters cast their ballots and on the heels of potentially devastating news for the Clinton campaign, this week’s three-round Capitol Fight Club is all about elections. Round 1: John, Brian, and The Sams delve into whether or not FBI director James Comey was right to update Congress about the status of Hillary Clinton’s email investigation, setting off the 2016 election’s most recent firestorm. What kind of precedent will this set for the bureau and for future elections? Round 2: Tuesday’s election, like all elections, is about far more than who will occupy the Oval Office for the next four years. One of this cycle’s biggest nail biters has become whether or not Republicans will keep control of the Senate. Listen to what the guys say about the potential of the Senate changing hands and what that will mean for the future of the Supreme Court. Round 3: So you’re saying there’s a chance? In light of the FBI’s recent announcement about Hillary’s investigation, the polls seem to be tightening between her and Donald Trump. In the last Capitol Fight Club round before Election Day, the guys weigh in with their predictions about America’s next commander in chief. The guys hash it out over whether or not your tax dollars ought to be going to fund these sorts of green projects, or whether market forces should drive the future of energy. In the second episode of Capitol Fight Club, John Gray, Brian Darling, Sam Sacks, Sam Knight and Nate Madden battled over taxing Wall Street and whether to defund the Clean Water Act. Capitol Fight Club is a weekly face off between two political insiders on the right versus two on the left. Darling and Gray worked for Sen. Paul. Our progressive friends, “The Sams,” Sam Sacks and Sam Knight, are the co-founders of the progressive blog The District Sentinel. Nate Madden is the ref and the moderator of the podcast. Round 1 The first segment was all about sin taxes and whether it would be a smart policy to tax high frequency trading on Wall Street. The hook for the segment was Sam Knight’s piece “Despite Proposing Rule Last Fall, CFTC Lacks Resources to Oversee High Frequency Trading” at the District Sentinel published April 12, 2016. The Sams want to tax as a means to raise cash and deter high frequency trading. The freedom lovers argued that the proper role of taxation is to merely raise enough money to run a very small government – not to social engineering. Round 2 The second segment was a debate on the idea that Congressional Republicans should use the power of the purse to defund the Clean Water Act, because average landowners are being bullied by the government when they try to fill in water on their own private property. Gray wrote a piece titled “The One Thuggish Regulation McConnell Needs To Defund Now” on April 7, 2016. The Sams thought it was madness to argue for defunding an environmental regulation. Gray provided a hard core defense of small government and the idea that landowners should not be regulated by bureaucrats from far away D.C. – and threatened with jail time for filling in some standing water on their private property. Another fun debate that got hot late in the episode. No agreement but another great debate for you to enjoy.
Capitol Fight Club – Voter ID Laws and Bernie v Trump’s Foreign Policy By John Gray, Brian Darling and Nate Madden In the premier episode of Capitol Fight Club, John Gray, Brian Darling, Sam Sacks, Sam Knight and Nate Madden battled over voter ID laws and who has a better foreign policy – Bernie or Donald Trump. Capitol Fight Club is a weekly face off between two political insiders on the right versus two on the left. Darling is a conservative libertarian who worked in the Senate for years, including a two year hitch with Sen. Rand Paul. Gray worked for Sen. Paul too and worked on the House side for the Budget Committee. Nate Madden is the ref and the moderator of the podcast. Our progressive friends, “The Sams,” Sam Sacks and Sam Knight, are the co-founders of the progressive blog The District Sentinel. Great blog and a good way to see how the other side thinks. Round 1 In Round 1 we battled over the idea of whether voter ID laws are suppressing voters from showing up. We reference the election in Wisconsin where the voters were felling the Bern. Brian and John, although not in love with Americans being forced to run around with a National ID card, made the case that liberals use this issues to play the race card against Republicans. Sam Sacks made an impassioned case that it is time to abolish these laws and force the federal government to defend the right to vote. Round 2 Round 2 was a segment dedicated to John Gray’s piece in Conservative Review titled, “Trump is Right, America is funding the Defense of the Free World.” We used that piece to battle between the Bernie foreign policy of a war against Global …. Warming versus Trump’s tough talk about how to defeat Islamic Extremists. Although the libertarians and progressives are all against nation building, they disagreed about who would be a better leader. It was an exciting bout and we expect the next episode to draw some blood and for all to leave with a few bruised egos. Hope you enjoy.
"Brilliant, troubling...superbly suspenseful...Mr. Mahajan’s writing is acrid and bracing, tightly packed with dissonant imagery...The sharpest passages examine the terrorist mind-set and the demented rationales for mass murder with such acid-etched clarity that it’s possible to feel the deadly magnetism of the arguments...The finest [novel] I’ve read at capturing the seduction and force of the murderous, annihilating illogic that increasingly consumes the globe." —Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal The Avid Reader Show is sponsored by Wellington Square Bookshop in Chester County, PA. In brief: Great getting to be on with Sam and Sam! We talked the sham Planned Parenthood “hearing” and news/activism opportunities in reproductive rights and justice. Note: I'm a writer and radio host full time, providing much of my content for free. If you can, consider supporting my work by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you! Overview: Such a pleasure to be on with Sam Sacks and Sam Knight — two of those people I know from around the interwebs, but don’t get the chance to chat with all that often. They both do really important work that parallels mine without often intersecting it directly; you should follow what they’re up to starting with this spot. We chatted about the sham hearing on Planned Parenthood’s funding, activism in reproductive rights and justice, and how anyone can get involved in the culture change of reducing abortion stigma as easily being supportive (or at the very least nonjudgemental) on their social media feeds. Links to on-air references: How to get involved (suggestions from the show): volunteer with your local abortion fund (public or private) & support the #BeBoldEndHyde/#4EACHOfUs campaigns from the All* Above All coalition. My piece on #BeBoldEndHyde for Truthout: "Activists Decry 39 Years of Class-Based Discrimination in Abortion Access” My piece on the groundbreaking legislation (#4EACHOfUs) & polling data for Truthout: "Widespread Public Support Bolsters Bill to End Restrictions on Abortion Coverage” My piece on the attempt to defund Planned Parenthood for Truthout: "The Unseen Costs of Defunding Planned Parenthood” The easy download/stream and additional text description/info/video/audio is available at the Guest Media Spot Archive tab on my website.
