Did you know humming can soothe your nervous system? Join us as marathon runner and activist Cal Calamia tries Bhramari Pranayama, a yogic humming breath technique, and we explore the research behind its stress-relieving power.Summary: Cal Calamia, the first nonbinary winner of the San Francisco Marathon, explores Bhramari Pranayama, an ancient yogic breathing technique that uses humming to promote relaxation. Dr. Gunjan Trivedi later explains how this "humming bee breath" enhances heart rate variability and why it's key to managing stress. Part of our ongoing series, Breathe Away Anxiety: https://tinyurl.com/4jyvkj4tTime: 15 minutes, or as long as it feels right. How To Do This Practice: Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose for 3-4 seconds. Exhale for 6-8 seconds, making a gentle humming sound (like a buzzing bee) as you breathe out. Adjust the timing of your inhale and exhale to find a rhythm that feels comfortable for you. Continue the practice for as long as feels right, focusing on the sound and sensation of your breath. Note: This version of Bhramari Pranayama, practiced without specific hand gestures (mudras), was studied by Dr. Gunjan Trivedi.Guest: Cal Calamia is an activist, teacher, poet, and the first nonbinary winner of the San Francisco marathon. Send us a Text Message.Embarking on a marathon journey isn't just about the miles—it's about the metamorphosis within. Catra Corbett, affectionately known as the Dirt Diva, joins us to recount her astonishing pivot from a haze of post-sobriety uncertainty to the clarity and vitality found on ultramarathon trails. Her tale isn't just about endurance, but about the sheer tenacity of the human spirit and the profound connections formed when we push our limits. From the pavement of the San Francisco Marathon to the ruggedness of 200-mile races, Catra's experiences weave a story of personal triumph and the ripple effect of a single choice. We lace up our trail shoes and navigate the mental switchbacks of ultramarathon running, capturing the essence of determination that powers Catra through sleep-deprived hallucinations and the physical hurdles of extreme distances. The landscape of long-distance running emerges as a unique community, one where nicknames like "Dirt Diva" are earned and the support of fellow runners fosters an environment where extraordinary goals become attainable. It's about the grit under your nails, the caffeine-fueled respite from fatigue, and the wisdom gleaned from every punishing mile.Yet, our conversation takes a turn from the physical to the emotional, as we discuss how running intertwines with the most tender threads of life. Catra shares how the loss of her loyal dachshund, Truman, was both a heartbreak and a catalyst for healing. It's an exploration of how grief finds solace in the rhythmic beat of footsteps on the trail and how the joy of running can be a guiding star through the darkest nights of the soul. As we close, we glimpse into the future with Catra's new canine companion, Forrester, and the continued journey toward races on the horizon, reminding us all that the run isn't over—it's just beginning to reveal its deeper gifts. With more than 2 billion monthly active users (MAUs), Instagram has secured a comfortable lead as the social media platform of choice for the vast majority of online-active almost-30s and 30-somethings out there. And with Instagram's core audience slowly aging to match running's demographic sweet spot, it's really important your race gets its Instagram strategy right soon, if you have an Instagram strategy at all.So, how do you master Instagram's highly-visual storytelling to reach new audiences on the platform? How do you build a consistent brand voice with all the tools Instagram has to offer? And how do you leverage running influencers, user-generated content, freelance contractors and free-to-use graphical design tools to make the most of the limited time and money you can commit to the platform? That's what we'll be discussing today with returning guest and resident race marketing expert, Andy Reilly. Through his race marketing agency, Eventgrow, Andy has planned and executed online marketing strategies for some of the country's top running events, including the Buffalo Marathon, Run Catalina and the San Francisco Marathon, and in his past appearances on the podcast has contributed to some of our most popular episodes, most recently a Facebook marketing two-parter that is a must listen if your race is doing anything on Facebook. But, today it's all about Instagram, and with Andy's help we're going to be looking at Instagram from the very high level of strategy and using Instagram alongside Facebook and your other marketing channels, all the way down to the nitty-gritty of image selection, contrast plays, picking catchy headlines and even what types of faces work best on an Instagram ad. Not to mention a very practical 101 crash course on using microinfluencers to extend your brand reach. In this episode:The evolution of Instagram audience demographics over the yearsInstagram vs Facebook from a user perspectiveEasy-win content ideas for starting out on InstagramIncluding (or excluding) Instagram placements on ad managerThe most efficient way to pick copy/images for your Instagram adWriting copy that works and picking the right creativesPicking images that work: leveraging contrast, choosing happy faces, hero imagesThinking through your Instagram ad funnel, CTAsWorking with freelancers and contract graphic designersPlanning your growth path and spending money on marketingThe importance of using Instagram filters consistently and aligning your style with your brandDriving engagement through humorSharing user-generated contentMicroinfluencers: what are they, where to find them, and what to offer themUsing microinfluencers to generate authentic, engaging content for your raceAssessing ROI for your microinfluencer spendThanks to RunSignup for supporting quality content for race directors by sponsoring this episode. In episode 2 of the PRP, Adam catches up with first time marathoner and former college roommate Hunter Le Blanc who has been preparing for the San Francisco Marathon on September 19th, 2021. Hunter shares the tale of how an alcohol infused night lead to signing up for an event he never thought he'd attempt. Hunter opens up about how much he has learned over the past few months and how his perspective on running has now wildly changed. Is there meaning to running beyond just getting fit? Hunter shares how he is rapidly working his way towards the answer to this question. Guest host Jay Tsuruoka, also part of the college roommate crew, helps to keep Hunter's ego in check (not an easy task) and offers some tremendous insight into the mindset required to tackle such a formidable goal. In 1996 Tawni Gomes weighed 295 pounds and was working for a Fortune 500 company climbing the corporate ladder, working her way up to the top. But, she was severely depressed, on antidepressants, and wasn't working out. But, then she was inspired by the Oprah Show. One day she was watching it and they were launching Bob Greene's book, Make the Connection. (Bob Greene is Oprah's trainer). So she bought the book and a treadmill. She was living in a tiny apartment in San Francisco at the time and barely fit. But, she would come home from work and watch Oprah. And at first she would walk on the treadmill during the first commercial of the show and get tired and sit down. Then she'd walk the second commercial, and so on. After a while she could walk during the whole show! Then she started walking outside but got hit by a car. That was December of 1996, and she was in a wheelchair. Tawni spent the next six months in rehab and physical therapy. When she was able to walk again I set the goal of doing a 5K. Tawni signed up for one that was part of the San Francisco Marathon. It finished at Kezar Stadium, where the 49ers used to play. It was a powerful moment. Tawni didn't know how long a marathon was and actually thought she had done the marathon! That's how little she knew about running. So, then Tawni thought that if I did 3 miles with a little training, I should be able to do 26 miles! Too bad you can't walk a marathon, Tawni said to herself And right then, a lady passed by with a flier saying, "Learn how to walk or run a marathon. The flier was for Team in Training. So Tawni, signed up, and in December of 1997 she walked her first marathon in Honolulu! Since then, Tawni has run over 100 marathons!
Walter B. Hoye II is both Founder and President of the Issues4Life Foundation, the California Civil Rights Foundation, Founder of the Frederick Douglass Foundation of California, co-founder and Executive Member of the National Black Pro-Life Coalition, a Board Member of The Morning Center (providing free full-service maternity care for women in urban and under-served areas), a published author (Leadership from the IN|SIDE Out), a board member of The Ruth Institute, a full-time pro-life activist, and a leadership consultant. This is an audio podcast of The Dr J Show. Full video episode is available here. As a young man Walter played football at Michigan State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Sociology in 1980. On Tuesday, January 12th, 1982 Walter was licensed to preach the gospel by the Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego, California. Walter graduated from the United States International University, now Alliant International University, with a Master's degree in Business Administration in 1983. In 1984, God used the premature birth of his firstborn son (six months, 2.1 pounds) to teach Rev. Hoye that the preborn is a person, a living & breathing human being. On Sunday, April 23rd, 1989 Walter was ordained a Baptist preacher by Pastor Dr. S.M. Lockridge. From 1984 to 1987 Walter served as Minister of Christian Education at the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Oceanside, California. From 1987 to 1991, Walter served as Assistant to the Pastor and Director of the Youth Department at the Greater Faith Baptist Church in Stockton, California. From 1991 to 2010, Walter served as the Executive Elder of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church of Berkeley. In May of 2010, Walter resigned to work full-time in the Pro-Life movement. He was asked to join a group of pro-life sidewalk counselors, to pray and give out literature to women on their way to the entrance of an abortuary. His ministry blossomed so much that the abortuary lost a great deal of business, and they complained to the Oakland authorities, who literally created a law just to put Rev. Hoye in jail. Though in court Rev. Hoye and his attorney from Life Legal Defense proved both that Walter did absolutely nothing illegal and that the only witness against him blatantly lied, the pro-abortion judge made sure Rev. Hoye unjustly went to jail, which he did. The judge, in fact, sought to sentence Walter to four *years* in jail for standing on a public sidewalk, but could not because of a legal technicality. Walter leads the Oakland pro-life march, he competes in the San Francisco Marathon and catches an NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB game whenever he can. “I think it's a release—it's easier when you're able to go all-in. If you have that second thing, that second chance, you have to constantly be deciding whether or not you're gonna do it today, you're gonna do it then—it's way easier to be like, ‘This is happening now. I'm going all in and I'm going to either die or crush it today. And that for me is the key to success in so many things. The things I haven't done well in is when I wasn't able to go all in and I sort of second-guessed what I was doing, how long I was going to be doing it, the long-term implications. It's all about being in it for the long haul and being all in.” Greg Billington made the 2016 U.S. Olympic team in triathlon and finished 37th at the Games in Rio. He retired from the sport a year later and took a full-time job working for Visa in San Francisco. While on a rotation in Dubai, he joined a local running club and ran the Pyramids Marathon in Egypt, winning it in 2:32. He then won last year's San Francisco Marathon in 2:25:24, then ran 2:22 and change at New York, and finished the year with an incredible 2:16:42 performance at CIM, finishing 8th overall, and easily qualifying for this year's U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon. How good is this guy? At CIM, he was in 52nd place at 30K and picked up 44 spots over the last 8 miles to put himself in the money. Just incredible. Greg and I had a great conversation that I'm excited to share with all of you this week on the podcast. We talked running, triathlon, going all-in on a pursuit, the physical and mental side of coming back from injury, what it means to go “full Billington,” and a lot more. The San Francisco Marathon is one of those bucket list races for most road runners. Running across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge is such a unique and wonderful experience. Circumnavigating the beautiful City by the Bay with Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park, cable cars, and surrounded by ocean is truly magical. For some folks, including Michael Wardian, 26.2 miles is just a warm-up. In July 2019 Michael won the San Francisco Double Marathon – 2 X on the course for a total of 52.4 miles! And this was after several other races in 2019 including the World Marathon Challenge – 7 marathons in 7 days, on 7 continents! Michael won all of them! And even that wasn’t enough, as you’ll hear about what he did immediately afterwards. Michael’s running career includes some crazy, funny records, and much, much more. He is certainly unique in his goals and the running path he follows. We may not all have the same goals and push that Michael does, but in this episode he gives great information and inspiration that even we ‘mere mortal’ runners can use to improve our performance and goals.

SHOW NOTES Dr. Tom Fletcher shares some of his observations about hip pain in endurance populations. Runners, cyclists and triathletes will be interested in this podcast session. Tom and I met years ago, working at an Ironman Triathlon. He is a triathlon junkie himself and is a great example of a treating doctor who gets into the culture of his patients. He practice in Sandy UT, just outside of Salt Lake City. Some of the topics we go into are: Hip Flexor Tightness Upper Quad Tightness Muscle Strains Hip Impingement Hip Labrum Tears Corrective Exercise And what day is the best to have a long ride in Utah. I’ve known Dr. Tom for years. As you will be able to tell on the podcast we have fun chatting. Dr. Tom Fletcher’s Bio: Dr. Tom Fletcher was raised in the Salt Lake Valley with his two brothers by his parents. He attended Brighton high school where he was involved with Rugby and as many Lake Powell trips as possible. After high school Tom moved on to the University of Utah. While at the University of Utah, Tom met his wife Delilah and continued his love for team camaraderie and athletics. It was not till Tom had nagging rugby injuries in college that he then sought out chiropractic care. The rest, as they say, is history. Tom attended Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California. While in California, Tom excelled in academics and patient care for a variety of conditions. He was able to further his education by attending post-graduate programs such as Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, and HandsOn Muscle Therapy. California also offered the unique opportunity for Tom to volunteer in many events as a student intern. These events included: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, Cal Bearathon Triathlon, Bay Area 24-Hour Bike Race, Nami Walk for Multiple Sclerosis, Los Gatos Ballet, and many more. California also helped Tom develop his love for triathlon. During his first race he thought his lungs were going to explode as he climbed the Berkeley hills. Since then Tom has tried to compete in as many races as time allows. Races such as Stanford Treeathlon, Cal-Poly Triathlon, Wildflower Triathlon, Cal Bearathon, and the San Francisco Marathon to name a few. Upon returning to Utah Tom has continued his athletic and post-graduate academic goals by working with chiropractic mentors to improve his skills in patient-based care. Tom has also had the unique opportunity to work with fellow Ironman triathlon doctors. One of Tom’s proudest accomplishments is being on staff with fellow IRONMAN doctors at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, IRONMAN Coeur D’Alene, and IRONMAN Arizona. To help you shatter your perception of what's possible, discover the training necessary to run 100 miles, and inspire you to chase your next stretch goal, I've invited Magdalena Boulet onto the podcast to talk about her performance at this year's Western States Endurance Run. One of the biggest names in the world of ultramarathons, Magda Boulet has an impressive list of credentials: 1st - 2002 and 2003 Pittsburgh Marathon 1st - 2002 San Francisco Marathon 1st - 2006 Orange County Marathon 2nd - 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon 1st - 2015 Western States Endurance Run 5th - 2016 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc 2nd - 2017 Western States Endurance Run She prepares methodically for challenging races, leaving no stone unturned as she strives to compete with the fastest endurance runners on the planet. This unique "testing mindset" helped her identify potential injury warnings before this year's Western States, vaulting her onto the podium. Using a blood analytics service called Inside Tracker, she identified biomarkers outside of her optimal zones - and then went to work fixing them through diet and lifestyle changes. She's on the podcast today to talk more about: What it takes to train for 100 milers Are they so different from marathons...? Her personal fueling approach for ultra marathons Pre- and post-race blood testing goals How her blood test results impacted her recovery Enjoy!
Ronnie Goodman is a homeless artist who received a lot of attention recently for running the San Francisco Half Marathon. His story has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Today Show, and he was trailed by ESPN film crews during the run. Ronnie has been through many challenges in his life. He was raised in the projects, dropped out of high school at 17, and was illiterate into his 20's. At one point, Ronnie became a drug addict which eventually led to him spending 8 years in prison. But when Ronnie hit rock bottom, he decided to turn his life around with the help of several rehabilitation programs in prison. After becoming a free man, he immediately entered the homeless community in San Francisco. Ronnie remained drug free and continued focusing on positive, daily choices in his life. He continued developing as an artist through Hospitality House and decided to run the second half of the San Francisco Marathon to celebrate his 54th birthday. By the time Ronnie crossed the finish line, his story had become a national media sensation. Ronnie's art career is also taking off. In June, his solo art show "Soul Journey" will open at the San Francisco Main Library.
