If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning... for 120 years! Noah must have worn out his hammer building the Ark... then another one... then another one. All that pounding and all that "gopher wood" were a testimony to everyone around. There were other testimonies, too. But when water started falling from the sky - for the first time ever - people were confused. They "didn't know." Today we begin a study on the signs of the Lord's return. Have we just stuck Jesus onto our old lives? When we look at the Apostle Paul's life, we see purpose. We see a plan. And his plan didn't always turn out to be God's plan, so that's reassuring. What we don't see is a life of leisure, putting in his time, coasting to Heaven. He was "all in." We're looking at Romans, chapter 15, and taking stock of the world, and of Christianity then, versus now. And asking, "What happened?" Pastor Heath Lambert tackles a crucial theological question: Was Jesus tempted, and what does that mean? Discover the difference between external and internal temptation, and how understanding these distinctions helps us comprehend how Jesus could be "tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin."TIMESTAMPS0:00 - Introduction: The Question About Jesus' Temptation0:49 - What Is Temptation? The Basic Question1:32 - Type 1: External Temptation (Tempting Situations)1:40 - Example: Stack of $100 Bills in Empty Room2:27 - Type 2: Internal Temptation (Spiritual Corruption)2:42 - James 1:14: Lured and Enticed by Own Desire3:45 - How External and Internal Temptations Connect4:00 - Personal Examples: Tofu Salad vs. Blueberry Muffin4:25 - The Key Difference: Situational vs. Spiritual4:53 - Jesus Was Tempted: Matthew 4:1 Evidence5:15 - Hebrews 4:15: Tempted in Every Way, Yet Without Sin6:01 - James 1:13: God Cannot Be Tempted with Evil6:19 - The Solution: Two Kinds of Temptation Applied to Jesus7:00 - How Jesus Faced External Without Internal CorruptionMAIN POINTS- Two Kinds of TemptationExternal temptation consists of tempting situations or circumstances (like finding money when alone), while internal temptation involves corrupt cravings and sinister desires within the heart. External temptation becomes spiritually significant only when it meets internal corruption.- External Temptation Is Situational, Not Necessarily SinfulBeing in a potentially tempting situation isn't inherently wrong. The sinfulness comes from the internal response - the corrupt desire that matches up with the external opportunity. Different people are tempted by different external circumstances based on their internal desires.- Jesus Faced All External TemptationsScripture clearly states that Jesus was "tempted in every way as we are" (Hebrews 4:15) and was "led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil" (Matthew 4:1). Every potentially tempting situation that exists confronted Jesus during His earthly ministry.- Jesus Had No Internal CorruptionThough Jesus faced all external temptations, He had no internal corruption or sinful desires to match them. His heart was always trusting in the Lord and wanting to do righteousness. This is why He could be tempted externally yet remain "without sin" - there was no internal spiritual corruption to respond to the external circumstances.SCRIPTURE REFERENCESPrimary Passages:Matthew 4:1 - Jesus led into wilderness to be temptedHebrews 4:15 - Tempted in every way as we are, yet without sinJames 1:13-14 - God cannot be tempted; each person tempted by own desireSupporting Context:James 1:13 - Let no one say when tempted, "I am being tempted by God"James 1:14 - Each person is lured and enticed by his own desire1 John 2:16 - The desires of the flesh, eyes, and pride of life1 Corinthians 10:13 - No temptation beyond what you can bearHave a question you'd like answered? Looking back, looking forward. While wrapping up his letter to the Christians in Rome, Paul introduces himself! Today his mini-résumé would be the "headline" of his "profile page." It looks to the past. And then the Apostle focuses on the future. What's on the horizon - and why is he so driven to accomplish his mission? For a few minutes, let's think about our lives in this same way. Where have we been, and where are we going? Scripture Reference: 2 Timothy 3:10-17 We live in a day where even having a talk about “truth” is incredibly confusing. We have attempted to build a society on the shifting ground of our feelings. But a community that lives by the revealed truth of God’s word simply functions differently. What would it look like to be a “people of the book?” Sermon Points: The Bible stands the test of time The Bible comes with its own power The Bible is a “word from the outside”

The Sermons on the Amount, Part 4 - The Devastation of Debt MESSAGE SUMMARY: This Sermon series assembles important Biblical references to all aspects of money and finances and their influence and impact on us; therefore, helping us to apply these Scriptures to our lives today. The reason for this series is because money and possessions have captivated our culture; and the Bible gives us specific instructions regarding how we should handle money. Debt is the obligation to pay back what is owed, while being in bondage to another person. Additionally, being in debt means we are presumptuous about the future, as we are told in James 4:13-14: “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.". The effects of debt on our lives include: 1) producing bondage to creditors; 2) causing us to evade self-examination; 3) interfering with God's provision; 4) damaging to God's reputation; 5) promoting impulse buying; 6) promoting impulse spending; and 7) stealing our resources through high interest payments. Suggestions for dealing with the effects of personal debt on you and your families: 1) start where you are and intentionally get out of debt – a purpose in your heart as a priority; 2) it is OK to ask for help; 3) live within your means; 4) pay with cash or a debit card and stop using credit cards; 5) begin to save as much as you can; and 6) ask God to help you – pray daily for God's guidance and wisdom. Get out of debt and don't be a slave to debt. As Jesus tells you in Matthew 7:26-27: “And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”. God is a faithful; pray for His help guidance in your debt and financial situation before it is too late. TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. Who should be ministering what, to whom? Toward the end of his letter to the Romans Paul gives us some background on his assignment to the Gentiles. He wasn't sent out with rituals and sacraments, or even hidden knowledge. It was a mission to bring the gospel in a powerful way. There's so much here in Romans chapter 15 that can correct human errors about "the ministry." Got hope? Our world is in a freefall of despair. It would be depressing even to mention some of the tragedies we've seen recently - caused by empty philosophies and dark theologies. Where can hope be found? The Apostle Paul answers that question in the passage we'll look at today. Hope - and joy, and peace - come "in believing." "Whatever is not from faith is sin." As we continue our discussion about living with others in mind, we'll come back to the last two verses of Romans, chapter 14. We can certainly scandalize another believer - put a stumbling block in his or her path - by flaunting our freedom. But we can also overstep our own conscience. It's a thoughtful, considerate kind of life that we're being invited to live. Here's Jim with Part 2 of, Living for Whose Pleasure? The Answer to Cancel Culture? Jesus Followers Must Lead a New Culture of “Grace and Kindness” Respecting the Ideas of Others MESSAGE SUMMARY: Following Jesus the Christ produces a culture of grace, mercy, and kindness is an environment in which there is no griping or murmuring; no putting people down – just respect for the words and ideas of others. Paul relates, in Galatians 5:22-26, and defines the outcomes or “Fruits of the Spirit” and how they relate to a “Culture of Grace”: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.". This culture of grace, mercy, and kindness gives people the benefit of the doubt; and it provides a visible demonstration of how you value other people and their views and perspectives. By providing a culture of Grace and mercy, along with respect for others, you create an atmosphere that is filled with the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Also, leading discussions in an environment of Grace and kindness lets others see Jesus in you. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, everything in me resists following you into the garden of Gethsemane to fall on my face to the ground before you. Grant me the courage to follow you all the way to the cross, whatever that might mean for my life. And then, by your grace, lead me to resurrection life and power. In Jesus' name, amen. What if you had to put all your proposed actions up for a vote? Your choices will now be approved by the committee! Sitting on that board will be your conscience, your family (especially your children), and others who look up to you. And a few strangers. That's not very practical, you're right. Should Christians baptize infants or only believers? This age-old debate divides denominations and families. In this episode of Marked by Grace, Heath Lambert respectfully tackles the arguments against infant baptism from a Baptist perspective. Despite having two Presbyterian mentors who deeply influenced his ministry, Heath examines three key areas: biblical teaching, biblical examples, and biblical covenants. Discover why there's no New Testament command to baptize babies, what household baptisms really teach, and how covenant signs relate to the nature of God's covenants.Timestamps0:00 - Introduction: Arguments against baptizing babies3:07 - Personal story: Two Presbyterian mentors who shaped Heath's ministry5:53 - Why church history can't be our ultimate authority7:12 - Biblical teaching: No New Testament text commands infant baptism8:07 - Colossians 2:11-12 doesn't teach infant baptism10:54 - 1 Peter 3:21 doesn't mention infant baptism12:35 - Romans 6:3-5: Baptism requires faith and understanding14:22 - Biblical examples: Household baptisms and arguments from silence16:24 - Biblical covenants: Signs must match the nature of the covenantKey Points- No Clear Biblical Command: There is no text in the New Testament that explicitly commands or describes the baptism of infants - this is a significant issue when establishing Christian practice.- Church History vs. Scripture: While church historians can be quoted on both sides of the infant baptism debate, Scripture must be our ultimate authority, not historical precedent.- Colossians 2:11-12 Misunderstood: This passage speaks of spiritual circumcision "made without hands" and assumes the baptized person has faith - it cannot refer to infant baptism.- Household Baptisms Are Arguments from Silence: When Acts describes household baptisms, there's no explicit mention of infants. The text indicates those baptized "heard the word" and believed.- Baptism Requires Understanding: Romans 6:3-5 shows baptism as a picture of death, burial, and resurrection with Christ - meaningful only for those who understand and trust in Jesus.- Covenant Signs Match Covenant Nature: Throughout Scripture, covenant signs directly relate to the covenant's nature. New Testament baptism signifies personal faith, not biological or familial membership.- New Covenant, New Requirements: Unlike Old Testament circumcision based on biological descent, New Covenant membership is based on personal faith, requiring different covenant signs.- Respectful Disagreement: It's possible to disagree with infant baptism while maintaining deep respect for those who practice it, including mentors and fellow believers.Scripture ReferencesColossians 2:11-12 - "In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead." - Spiritual circumcision, not infant baptism1 Peter 3:21 - "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." - Baptism as an appeal of faith, not infant cleansingRomans 6:3-5 - "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his." - Baptism requires understanding of Christ's death and resurrectionActs 10:44 - "While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word." - Those baptized in household baptisms were those who heard and believedRomans 2:28-29 - "For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter." - True circumcision is spiritual, not physicalHave a question you'd like answered? The scoffer says, "There are too many hypocrites in the church!" His Christian friend answers, "No, there's room for one more." It may be true that the critic is looking for an excuse not to believe in Jesus, but his criticism hits closer to the mark than we would like. Concern for the reputation of God and His Kingdom is one principle that can guide us in the "gray areas." Here's Jim in Romans 14. Peter's powerful testimony for Jesus led to his imprisonment. While faithfulness often encounters resistance, believers can find encouragement in sharing the sufferings of Christ and our global brethren. Despite being chained in prison, Peter experienced profound peace, sleeping soundly—a peace unlike any the world offers. The Lord intervened, sending an angel to awaken and free him. God sees us in our own "prisons" and possesses all the power needed to break our chains. Are you resting in God's peace today?SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:ACTS 12:1-6ACTS 5:17-25ACTS 12:6ACTS 12:7-11

The Sermons on the Amount, Part 3 - You are God's Supervisor MESSAGE SUMMARY: This Sermon series assembles important Biblical references to all aspects of money and finances and their influence and impact on us; therefore, helping us to apply these Scriptures to our lives today. The reason for this series is because money and possessions have captivated our culture. Jesus' “Parable of the Talents”, in Matthew 25:14-30, tells us a great deal about our responsibilities and accountability regarding the “talents” that God has given us – also, we are to supervise these “talents” that God has given us. We have been given different “talents” by God; and God will give us blessings based on how we supervised the “talents” which He has given us; however, God will punish us if our supervision is not acceptable to Him. Stewardship – we are God's Supervisors, which is an awesome responsibility. As God declared and challenged us in Genesis 1:26-27: “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.". Therefore, humankind is supervisor all that God, the Creator of the Universe, created. With this awesome responsibility of stewardship, God has given us some instructions in Scripture to help us in this responsibility: 1) God has entrusted us with those “talents” that He has given us and He provides the opportunity for more; 2) God expects us to use what He has given us and according to His will – involve God in the process; 3) God has provided for our needs and enjoyment but, also, God expects us to address the needs of others; 4) God expects us to work using our “talents”, skills, and gifts; 5) God expects us to abide with His principles regarding money – a) the first part of our “increase” is Holy and Sacred to God (God is owner), b) tithing (God owns all and the first 10 percent is returned to Him as the prophet Malachi tells us in Malachi 3:10: “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse {e.g., Church}, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.".). c) giving is Worship, and d) saving; and 6) God will hold us accountable. God has entrusted us with what He has given, and He has provided us with the opportunity for more. You cannot out give God; and God is always faithful. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. All God's children need principles! We've been studying Romans 14, and how we should handle legitimate differences of opinion on how we interface with the world. At this point we've left the land of laws and rigid rules. But does that mean we have no objective guideposts at all? Today Pastor Jim will show us some principles from this chapter that can serve as our compass. My principles might not be shared by someone else, but they can keep me from going off track. What if we're both right? Some people like things to be tidy. We like a neat workspace, an orderly flow of traffic, and a theology with no loose ends. We want right to be right and wrong to be wrong, always and for everybody. Well, God seems to have left some ambiguities just to challenge people like us. On the fringes of His great tapestry, the "tie that binds" may look more like a stray thread. Here's Jim in Romans, chapter 14. It's the carnivores vs. the vegetarians! The early Christians in Rome had a problem. Some wanted to honor God by abstaining from meat and enjoying holy days; others wanted to honor God by doing the reverse. Apparently there wasn't a king-like human authority in the church... in Rome... who could decide the matter for them. To this day similar disagreements continue to give Christians reasons to either judge each other, or accept our differences. Your child just asked you a question that made you freeze up. Whether it's about circumcision after Sunday school, what sex is, or something they read in the Bible, difficult questions from kids can catch Christian parents off guard. In this episode of Marked by Grace, Heath Lambert shares three essential principles for handling sensitive topics with children. Learn why YOU must be the primary source of answers, how to use Bible words confidently, and the art of giving age-appropriate responses without overwhelming little minds.Timestamps0:00 - Introduction: Handling difficult questions from little kids2:36 - Principle #1: YOU must be the source of answers4:50 - Principle #2: Use Bible words confidently6:44 - Principle #3: Be age-appropriate in your responses7:40 - Example: "What is sex?" - Simple, truthful answer8:18 - Example: Deuteronomy question from a first-graderKey Points-Be the Primary Source: Your children will get answers to their difficult questions somewhere. The question is: do you want them getting answers from you or from friends, the internet, or other unreliable sources?- Use Bible Words: If God uses certain words in Scripture, they're appropriate for your children. Don't feel nervous about using biblical language - circumcision, adultery, etc. - when explaining biblical concepts.- Age-Appropriate Responses: Don't give more detail than children actually want or need. Often a simple, truthful answer satisfies their curiosity without overwhelming them.- Create an Open Environment: Make it clear that no question is off-limits, even if it makes you uncomfortable. Children need to trust that parents are the best source for answers.- Start Simple: Begin with basic explanations and let children ask follow-up questions if they need more information. Don't build the whole "watch" when they just want to know the "time."- Biblical Foundation: Scripture equips us for every good work, including answering our children's questions. If kids are old enough to read the Bible, they're ready for Bible words. View this episode of Marked By Grace on teaching the Gospel to your children: https://youtu.be/hSlKeI3YHyI- Modern Challenges: Today's children face more complex questions earlier than previous generations due to increased exposure to mature content and technology.Scripture References2 Timothy 3:16-17 - "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." - Scripture equips us for answering children's questionsDeuteronomy 6:6-7 - "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." - Teaching God's word to childrenEphesians 6:4 - "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." - Parental responsibility for spiritual instructionHave a question you'd like answered? In this powerful message, we're reminded of our true identity in Christ. The central theme revolves around the concept of being a 'new creature' in Christ, as mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:17. We're encouraged to embrace this new identity, understanding that God sees us as flawless through the redemptive work of Jesus. The message emphasizes that our past no longer defines us, and we're not limited by our sins or natural background. Instead, we're called to live in the reality of being children of God, righteous through faith in Christ. This transformative truth should empower us to overcome challenges, break cycles of negativity, and live boldly in our God-given purpose. The parallel drawn between chronological time and God's eternal 'now' offers a profound perspective on forgiveness and our constant state of redemption in Christ. This message challenges us to renew our minds, seeing ourselves as God sees us, and to walk in the fullness of our spiritual identity. The Sermons on the Amount - Part 2 "Owner - A Question: Who is Lord Over All?" MESSAGE SUMMARY: This Sermon series assembles important Biblical references to all aspects of money and finances and their influence and impact on us; therefore, helping us to apply these Scriptures to our lives today. The reason for this series is because money and possessions have captivated our culture. In Colossians 1:16, Paul establishes Jesus' Divinity and primacy: “For him {Jesus} all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.". Jesus is the Creator and owner of all things both Earthly and Universally. Also, the Psalmist, in Psalms 24:1-2, establishes the supremacy of God's “ownership” of all things: “The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.". God's aspects of “ownership” include our: 1) time – we can't change time or add time to a twenty-four-hour day or our earthly lives; 2) land – we are but passing through with only temporary stewardship for the land we occupy before our death; 3) animals – God created and owns all animal life; 4) gold, money and finances – as God tells us in Haggai 2:8: “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts.”; and 5) all that we possess (tangible and intangible) – health, mind, family heritage, creativity, bodies. When we realize that Jesus owns everything, even though we have worked hard to obtain and enjoy the benefits of land, money, time and the other tangible and intangible components of our lives then and only then do we obtain a freedom to truly live our lives to the fullest. Everything that we “have” and “enjoy” is because of and from the ownership of God, as we are told in 1 Chronicles 29:14-15: “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding.”. Jesus is either the Lord over all, or He is not the Lord at all! In the New Testament, the word “Lord” means the one that rules over us for our own good. In these times today, we must be intentional to have Jesus as the “Lord” over our lives, money and possessions. Intellectually, we must come to a place where we recognize and accept that Jesus is the owner. Most people in Western Christianity never come to this realization and acceptance of Jesus' ownership and “Lord” over all. The Lord wants to bless us and reward us while we recognize His ownership and use, to His name, of all that He has permitted us to use and possess in our lifetime. It helps to openly acknowledge God's ownership of all that we possess – acknowledge to God that we are in partnership with Him for all that He has permitted us to possess while we are on this earth. In his writings, Andrew Murray recommends guidelines that we: 1) receive all our money with thanksgiving and as coming from God; 2) lay everything down before God as belonging to Him; 3) let our dealings with money be a part of our spiritual life; and 4) make the study of the Word of God, relating to finances and money, become a key part of our lives. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM RIGHTEOUS IN GOD'S EYES. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Matthew 6:19-24; Colossians 1:15-20; Psalms 24:1-2; 2 Peter 3:8; Matthew 6:27; Leviticus 25:23; Daniel 4:17-30; Deuteronomy 8:18: Psalms 50:10; Matthew 6:26; Haggai 2:8; Job 1:20-21; 1 Corinthians 6:19; 1 Chronicles 29:14-15. You can pay your taxes, you can pay off your mortgage, but there's one debt that can never be settled. Fortunately, the inexhaustible debt to love others is a happy burden. Yes, it's very difficult sometimes, but the end result can be peaceful and pleasant. In the section of Romans 13 that we've been looking at, Paul charges his readers to love "one another," and then again, to love "your neighbor." So the circle widens. Here's Jim to finish a sermon called, Love's Truest Test. As Christians we are free! - but we have obligations. At some point in our journey toward adulthood we figure out that grownups have to pay bills. And those who don't pay what they owe will have a difficult time of it. It's the same on our road to Christian maturity. Along the way, we learn that we have debts. Jim will talk about what those are, in the opening segment of his sermon, Love's Truest Test. "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." That simple scripture, Romans 12:21, is sparking some thought in us. How do we respond when someone injures our reputation, or our career - or our body? It takes some faith and imagination to believe that my "enemy" might one day be my brother or sister in Christ. If we could distill the entire Bible into one verse, which verse would you choose? Most people would say that John 3:16 is the message of God's Word in miniature: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." But Jim has a different choice! Today he'll defend his selection of Romans 12:21 as the unified message of the Bible. It's a verse that divides all of humanity! Is getting life insurance a sign of fear or an act of love? This question divides many Christian families - one spouse wants financial protection while the other believes it shows lack of faith. In this episode of Marked by Grace, Heath Lambert tackles this practical theology question using three key Scripture passages. Discover why biblical wisdom actually encourages planning for future needs, how trusting God and preparing for danger work together, and why life insurance might be one of the most loving things a husband can do for his family.Timestamps0:00 - Introduction: Can you buy life insurance and still trust God?1:12 - Could life insurance be driven by fear? Yes, but not necessarily2:07 - Proverbs 22:3 - The prudent sees danger and prepares3:19 - Proverbs 6:6-8 - Learn from the ant: prepare for coming needs4:48 - 2 Thessalonians 3:10 - Work and trust go together6:44 - A word to husbands: Life insurance as an act of love7:42 - Both positions can be wrong: fear vs. presumption8:15 - Personal example: Life insurance at the Lambert house and churchKey Points- Fear vs. Wisdom: Life insurance could be motivated by fear, but it's more often an act of biblical wisdom - seeing danger ahead and preparing for it.- Biblical Precedent for Planning: Scripture consistently teaches that preparing for future needs is wise, not faithless. The ant prepares for winter, and we're commended to do the same.- Trust and Work Go Together: Just as we pray for daily bread AND work for our food, we can trust God's provision AND plan for our family's future needs.- Presumption vs. Faith: Not getting life insurance isn't necessarily more faithful - it might actually be presuming upon God to provide in ways He hasn't promised.- Husbands' Responsibility: Men are called to provide for their families and love their wives sacrificially. Life insurance can be a practical expression of this love.- Risk Management: Life insurance allows you to pay someone else to assume the financial risk of your death, protecting your wife from having to make difficult decisions alone.- Both Sides Can Be Wrong: The person wanting life insurance might be driven by fear, but the person opposing it might be driven by presumption rather than genuine faith.- Average vs. Reality: Just because the average American male lives to 79 doesn't guarantee you will - planning for the possibility of earlier death is wise stewardship.Scripture ReferencesProverbs 22:3 - "The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it." - Biblical wisdom encourages preparing for known dangersProverbs 6:6-8 - "Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest." - Planning for future needs is commendedProverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." - Trusting God doesn't eliminate the need for wise planning2 Thessalonians 3:10 - "If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat." - Personal responsibility and divine provision work togetherMatthew 6:11 - "Give us this day our daily bread." - We pray for God's provision while also working for itEphesians 5:25 - "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." - Sacrificial love includes practical provisionHave a question you'd like answered? "Comeuppance" is a word we need to bring back! "Punishment" and "retribution" are good words. But there's just something satisfying about the villain finally getting his comeuppance! In Romans 12, Paul uses the word "Wrath." And today Jim will show that God's wrath is better than our wrath - for at least a couple of reasons. Here's Part 2 of his sermon, Stretch Your Credibility. When someone gives you hate, can you give them love... and say, "Keep the change?" It's unnatural to bless those who curse you. Or maybe "supernatural" is a better word. In those seemingly rare instances when it happens, the whole world notices. People are forced to come to grips with the fact that there's something else going on here, something more than meets the eye - something supernatural.
