Twenty two service men and women die by suicide everyday. Those are just the ones that can be counted. Countless others suffer alone. You can only embrace the suck so long, before you need to change your operation. What is up and welcome to episode two hundred sixteen of Above Ground Podcast. This week we are joined by Gunny Claus. Gunny, is a retired Marine Drill Sergeant, who adopted his persona of Gunny Claus, to make some meaning and give back to the community. Upon returning home Gunny wanted to make a difference and found his way to helping Toys for Tots. When asked to appear as a living example, Gunny was forced out of his box. Gunny opened himself up to allow parts of himself to be touched that as a Marine would not have been otherwise. Gunny provides us a chance to witness in real time that how we affect someone has ripple effects throughout our world. And you never know when you might run into one of those particular individuals. Be careful, you meet the same people on the way up as you do on the way down. They just look differently from your back, so remain on your toes and treat people kindly. Irreverent Warriors is a national organization that helps vets heal through shared experience, humor, and providing understanding, connection and camaraderie to help mental health and prevent suicide. Gunny will be in NYC on August 26, 2023 for the Silkie's Hike NYC. A non athletic hike kicking off at W 67th Street at 7:00am. Thanks for listening to this week's episode of Above Ground Podcast. Thank you to everyone who came out to NipperFest last week and spoke with us. We were grateful to be part of the connection and the community. Please continue to rate, review, subscribe and share. But Tony struggled to ask for help when he needed it most. In this deeply personal episode, we go all the way back to Tony's childhood when tragedy and chaos seemed like the norm, and we hear about the effects of deployment on relationships and substance use. It has been a hell of a 2 year stint representing the Irreverent Warriors with our weekly podcast! But, as all good things come to an end, so too has our time with IW. We have had a great run and made a lot of important connections with politicians, celebrities and various VSOs, large and small, who have come on the show and shared similar missions. We have connected so many IW hikers with resources and made relationships that will further the goal of preventing veteran suicide. We had a lot of laughs but I hope we saved a few lives in the process too.

Today we've got an awesome guest on the show. Someone who left corporate America to pursue a passion in woodworking. Mr Danny Zientek joins us today to talk with us about his journey to starting a wood working business. About a month ago, Danny posted his accomplishment on LinkedIn. He received over 100k like and almost 7k comments supporting his decision. I am proud to be one of those likes and to have the opportunity to talk with him on this show. Danny grew up admiring his grandfather's work as a cabinet maker and wood worker, so his fascination began at an early age. He also admired his grandfathers stories about the time he spent in the military. So much so that Danny headed to the Army straight out of high school. After his tenure in the service, he inserted himself into corporate America eventually landing a sales position. After that job grew monotonous, he knew he had to do something different for the betterment of himself and his family. That's when Danny Z's woodworking was born. Now, with the full support of his wife and kids, he's able to make a living doing what makes him happy. Which aligns with his true definition of success; to be the ultimate family man. He's also involved with Irreverent Warriors, which focuses on suicide prevention (not just awareness) for veterans. This week's episode of Borne the Battle features Texas Army National Guard Veteran Cindy McNally and Marine Corps Veteran Nate McDonald, the president and vice president of Irreverent Warriors. McNally and McDonald discuss Irreverent Warriors' mission to improve mental health and prevent Veteran suicide worldwide by providing a space to build camaraderie at their Silkie Hike events.McNally is the CEO and president of Irreverent Warriors. She and her family suffered the tragic and unexpected loss of her husband and Marine Corps Veteran, Rand, who took his own life after years of internal struggle. McNally has three children, two of whom followed their parents' paths to military careers.McDonald is the COO and vice president of Irreverent Warriors. He served as an intelligence operative for Special Projects, often jumping from team to team and deploying with a variety of units. Because he suffered multiple TBIs during his service, he chose to leave the military when his ability to perform in the field came into question.McDonald then worked as a consultant with various US government and military organizations. He lost many comrades due to mental health issues, so when the opportunity to help arose, he joined Irreverent Warriors to positively impact the lives of other service men and women. One of the greatest contributors to Veteran suicide is isolation, something that Irreverent Warriors seeks to combat by bringing Veterans together. Camaraderie is vital to soldiers during their service, and Irreverent Warriors aims to build it in the Veteran community. The Silkie Hikes are only open to Veterans and active-duty service members and happen across the country. This year, the organization is expanding internationally to recognize that Veteran suicide is not unique to the United States but is a worldwide issue.McNally and McDonald discuss how they found and joined the organization, gained their leadership roles, ways in which VA can help to combat Veteran suicide, and the stunning impact of Irreverent Warriors on Veterans across the nation.

“The David Johnson Show” - The Veteran Talk Show - continues with a heartbreaking episode of loss and suicide with U.S. Army Veteran Cindy McNally and Marine Corps Veteran Andrew Farrer, both of who are currently involved with Irreverent Warriors, a non-profit organization that works to bring veterans together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide. In the first half of the episode, Cindy and Andrew share details about their military background and the trials they both faced in tackling life's challenges. The second half of the program covers their work with Irreverent Warriors, and how they create meaningful connections for Veterans through Silkies Hikes. These are amazing community events for active duty men and women and veterans to get together to hike, connect, promote community and raise awareness for suicide prevention and other traumas faced by vets. Watch episode 2 of “The David Johnson Show” below or on our YouTube channel to see the amazing camaraderie that exists in the veteran community. Read more about Cindy and Andrew below the video clip. Cindy McNally bio Cindy McNally is President/CEO of Irreverent Warriors, designed for active-duty soldiers and veterans. She is also a founding member and past president of WilCo Blue Star Mothers, an organization with the mission to support other military parents. Cindy came from a military family, having seen both her uncle (Marine in Vietnam) and father (36 years in Texas Army National Guard) serve their country well. She joined the Army in 1978, straight out of high school and into Fort Jackson. Her class was only the U.S. Army's 2nd class of co-ed basic training, and “they were still trying to figure things out then” remembers Cindy in the clip. After two uneventful years as an admin clerk, she joined the Texas Army National Guard, where she received her commission and stayed on as a tack officer. She eventually met a Marine who became a fighter pilot and eventually married him. They were married 22 years, raising three children, and her husband flew for America Airlines for 21 years. Sadly, her husband had insurmountable psychological issues that resulted in him taking his own life in 2007. From this experience, she became deeply involved in helping veterans through her non-profit organizational work. Andrew Farrer bio Andrew Farrer, now active with Irreverent Warriors, joined the Marines at age 26, and served in 2005/2006 in Iraq, fighting in Al-Karmah and Ramadi. He received a Purple Heart in 2006, having received shrapnel in his foot during a patrol. In the program, Andrew shares some of the duties of working in these pivotal wars. “We did posts, we did patrols, I fired my gun a lot, I cleaned it a lot, I walked a lot, and we lost a lot of guys in that time,” remembers Andrew. Like Cindy's sad experience, Andrew also lost his father, a Lt. Commander in the Navy, to suicide while he was in boot camp.
For today's episode I sat down with Yonel Dorelis, a career helicopter pilot. We talked about his time in the Marines, the Navy, the Air National Guard, and the Air Force. He's a recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Flying Cross, with a V for Valor and a super interesting guy. Check it out. Yonel has two organizations to highlight. The first is Merging Players and Vets, or MVP. They bring together combat veterans and professional athletes, to workout and hang out. The second group is Irreverent Warriors. We've highlighted them on the show before, they do a great job bringing together veterans to build that sense of teamwork and camaraderie that a lot of miss when we get out. They're both great groups, give them a look.
I sat down with Danny to talk about his unique perspective on the Iraq war. He did three tours across Iraq, and got see the major phases of the war up close. He also spent some time in the mountains of Afghanistan. Make sure you listen for his comparison of Iraqi insurgents and the Taliban. Also, make sure to check out Irreverent Warriors, the have events all across the country. If you're missing the dark humor and friendship of your old platoon mates, Irreverent Warriors can help bring that back.

Kevin Sullivan hosts the Twenty-One Gun Podcast, the official podcast of Irreverent Warriors. Kevin served our Nation as an Air Force Navigator and continues to serve as a veteran advocate. It was great to chat with Kevin about veteran issues, stress, podcasting, VET Tv, and silkies hikes. Listen in….From Kevin: Lately, we're hearing about 22 veteran suicides a day. It makes me wonder where I would have been a decade ago without the support of a loving family and resources to get back on my feet. How many veterans are left feeling alone and isolated in a sea of civilians who don't speak their language, understand their humor, or share common experiences? So I decided to bring the stories of Post-9/11 Veterans out in the open. I want veterans to share their stories of success and failures and to hopefully shed light on the fact that none of us are alone as long as we call ourselves veterans!#veteran #irreverentwarriors #silkiehike #vettv #silkieshikes #twentyonegunpodcast #veteranissues #22aday #usarmy #usairforce #usmarines #usnavy #uscoastguard #vetshelpvets @21gunpodcast @vet_tv @donnyomalley #gruntlife #vettvarmy #vettvnavy #vettvmarines #vettvairforce Twenty-One Gun Podcast: https://www.twentyonegun.net/ VET Tv: https://www.veterantv.tv/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)
