Our text today is 1 Peter 4:10-11: As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. — 1 Peter 4:10-11 One year ago today, Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University. Much of his public life had been spent speaking to students, inviting debate, building an organization, and mobilizing young people around deeply held convictions. His death was a sobering reminder that none of us knows how long we will have to use what has been entrusted to us. Charlie clearly possessed unusual capacities for communication, leadership, organization, and influence—and he chose to put them to work. Peter writes: "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." Notice Peter's first words: "As each has received a gift." He does not reserve ministry for pastors, speakers, missionaries, or people with large platforms. Every believer has received grace from God that can strengthen someone else. The word Peter uses for "gift" is charisma, which derives from charis, the Greek word for grace. A spiritual gift is not something we earn or create. It is grace entrusted to us so that God's grace can reach others through us. A spiritual gift is grace with an assignment. That is why Peter tells us to use it "to serve one another." Your gift was not given primarily to make you feel significant. It was given because someone else needs what God intends to provide through you. Peter also calls believers "good stewards." A steward manages what belongs to someone else. Your gift is not your possession to hoard, compare, or use for self-promotion. It belongs to God, and He has placed it in your hands for a purpose. This changes the way we think about gifts. A spiritual gift is not a spotlight. It is a stewardship. Peter then places ministry into two broad categories: speaking and serving. Some believers communicate truth, teach Scripture, encourage faith, or proclaim the gospel. Others organize, give, show mercy, extend hospitality, meet practical needs, or quietly strengthen people behind the scenes. One form may be more visible, but it is not more valuable. The person speaking to thousands, like Charlie, and the person quietly encouraging one discouraged believer, like you and me, may both be faithful stewards of God's grace. Peter also explains how these gifts should be used. Those who speak must remain governed by God's truth. Those who serve must depend on the strength God supplies. We do not merely work for God through natural energy. We allow Him to work through us by His Spirit. And the goal is clear: "That in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ." This one-year anniversary of Charlie's assassination invites a personal question for suffering and exiled believers trying to live holy in a hostile world. Are you faithfully using what God has placed in your hands? You may still be unsure how God has gifted you. That is worth discovering. An assessment cannot assign your calling or replace prayer, Scripture, service, and the wisdom of mature believers. But it can help you identify patterns of grace God may already be expressing through your life. God could have made every believer great at everything. He didn't—and that was on purpose. This week we wrap up our series on spiritual gifts with the final two: leading and mercy. Spiritual gifts can bring out the best in a marriage or the worst, depending on whether we treat them like a tool for serving or a trophy for proving ourselves. We start with a simple tension we see in real couples all the time: when we push into an area where our spouse is strong, we stop completing each other and start competing. That competition breeds conflict, resentment, and spiritual drift, even when both people genuinely want a biblically healthy marriage. We also name the baggage many of us carry from church culture. Some of us grew up with spiritual gifts barely mentioned, while others have watched them get abused for attention, control, or money. We unpack why that history makes couples want to avoid the topic altogether, and why ignoring spiritual gifts quietly drains spiritual life from the home. God gives gifts for a stated purpose: to build up the church and extend the kingdom, starting with the “two or more gathered” reality of husband and wife. Then we get painfully practical about prerequisites. If salvation is real, your marriage should be able to talk about it clearly. Could your spouse tell your testimony with details, not just say you “grew up Christian”? This sermon examines the first eleven verses of 1 Corinthians 12 to explain the nature and purpose of spiritual gifts within the church. The preacher addresses the theological debate between cessationists and continuationists regarding the presence of miraculous gifts today while emphasizing that all believers possess some manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Key themes include the sovereignty of the Triune God in distributing diverse abilities, the necessity of discerning true spiritual utterances from false ones, and the specific functions of gifts such as wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, prophecy, and tongues. The text highlights that these manifestations are not for personal pride but are designed to benefit others and glorify Christ. Ultimately, the message affirms that every gift originates from the Holy Spirit who distributes them according to His sovereign will.

God didn't give you a spiritual gift to sit on—He gave it to give away. This week we continue our series on spiritual gifts with two more from Romans 12: encouragement and giving. Whether you're the person who always knows the right thing to say, or the one who quietly looks for ways to be generous, your gift is needed in the church. God gave first, and He invites us to do the same—determined, planned, and cheerful. Whatever your gift is, the King of Kings made you uniquely for it. Use it.

So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.' 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?' So he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.' And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.' 8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. 9 “And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, (wealth)  that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man's, who will give you what is your own? 13 “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.Ephesians 2:8-98 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

We now come to a special part of Paul's letter to the Corinthians, these are chapters 12 to 14, and the first two are for today and they start, “Now concerning spiritual gifts ….” And Paul seeks to put their understanding of these gifts into a godly perspective.  Paul first makes the point, “When you were pagans you were led astray…” [v.2] At that time they had experienced all kinds of trances and ecstasy, as can still be observed among some primitive peoples today, being seen as ‘gifts' from their imagined gods. Paul tells them that, as members of Christ, “there are varieties of gifts … and there are varieties of service, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone” [v.4-6].  These are to be used “for the common good”.   [v.7] – not in competition.  These gentiles in Corinth had no Bible to read, and so “through the Spirit … one is given … the utterance of wisdom … another the utterance of knowledge …”  The gift of tongues is mentioned last – and Paul counsels them to “earnestly desire the higher gifts” [v.31] adding, “and I will show you a still more excellent way.” This brings us to the marvellous exposition he gives on the value of love.  In ch. 13.  One can “have all faith … but have not love” then, says Paul, “I am nothing” [v.2,1]  In ch. 12 Paul had made the point, which we might fail to stress, “”Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”  Collectively, together we make up “the body of Christ.”  For, says Paul, “the body does not consist of one member but of many.” [v.14] Believers must team together as parts of Christ's body of believers, using the individual abilities they have been given for the common good – above all, to display and practise the collective character of Christ.  In that way, our children who have not yet accepted Christ will be influenced – and of course, unbelievers – if they are seekers, will be attracted.  Head knowledge is essential, but is only half of “the body” – our hearts are the other half!   A body is “dead” if it has no heart:  Head and heart team together to produce faith    The end of ch. 13 sums it all up, “So now faith, hope and love abide … but the greatest of these is love.”  To finish, let us meditate on that verse: in the kingdom age, hope will be fulfilled and turn into sight, so faith will not be needed.  The one thing that will “abide” is “love.”  That will be the all-embracing spirit of mind in that wondrous time, how vital we develop it now if we aim, by His grace, to be there.

Certainly there is not a man in the world who hath not forfeited all his reason and understanding unto atheism, or utterly buried all their operations under the fury of brutish affections, but he is convinced that it is his duty to pray to the deity he owns, in words of his own, as well as he is able; for this, and none other, is the genuine and natural notion of prayer. This is implanted in the heart of mankind, which they need not be taught nor directed unto.
