Lisa is joined by Dr. Mark Goulston who shares where he shares what mortality is teaching him. Be sure to watch his video series, I'm Dying to tell you... on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@ImdyingtotellyoudrmarkDr. Mark Goulston is dying to tell you about what mortality is teaching him. He is a distinguished psychiatrist and death and dying specialist facing his own mortality and the universe is telling him to share what he's learned from 50 years of listening. He says that if he knew these things decades earlier, it would have changed his life for the better. Now you can learn them to change your life for the better... and you don't need to be dying to learn them. Dr. Goulston, Fearing death is a universal human experience, what are some of the ways you've been able to welcome it with tranquility and fulfillment. After receiving a challenging prognosis, with a 50 percent chance of survival even with the best of treatments, Dr. Goulston embarked on a journey of introspection, reflecting on the values that have guided his life and learning to embrace his own mortality with grace. Throughout his career, Dr. Goulston has worked with dying patients, guiding many to peace in the eleventh hour. Having been witness to so many deaths—the good and the not so good—he now feels an urgency to share these profound insights and wisdom on how we can all prepare for a good death, navigate life's challenges, and find inner Dr. Mark Goulston, MD, FAPA, is a board-certified psychiatrist, former UCLA professor of psychiatry, and author or coauthor of ten books translated into 43 languages, with 600,000+ copies in print and with his book Just Listen becoming the top book on listening in the world. He is also a death and dying specialist, having been mentored by Dr. Edwin Shneidman, a pioneer in the field, and having developed his lifesaving and mortality comforting empathic skills into an approach he calls, “Surgical Empathy,” through decades of working with suicidal patients and doing house calls to dying patients. He hosts the highly ranked podcast My Wakeup Call and co-hosts the weekly radio show Hurt Less, Live More on UK Health Radio. He is also a former FBI and police hostage negotiation trainer. Check out his “I'm Dying to Tell You” series on Youtube and TikTok.The values that guided Dr. Goulston's life, how he came to have no regrets, and how you can make sure to have a good death:● Listening. Dr. Goulston has made a career out of it and has written the top book in the world about it. Deep listening, he says, was his main tool in working with suicidal patients for 35+ years, during which time none of them died by suicide. The main trick was not just to merely listen to something or someone, but to focus on what they were listening for. Nonjudgmentally search out that thing that is always lingering beneath and deeper below the surface and people will spontaneously open up.● Generosity. More than ever, we live in a society that values self over others. But in society's constant pursuit of material acquisition, Dr. Goulston finds that generosity has made his life richer and causes him to come from abundance rather than scarcity.● Service. Through one life, thousands can be affected. Because of his deeply listening to suicidal patients, dying patients on house calls, and growing his own family, Dr. Goulston forged a career and personal life that not only elevated others, but was instrumental in his own life's mission.● Curiosity. We learn new things every day, but it's a childlike curiosity that keeps us hungering for knowledge. Get excited about learning new things and see where continually asking why? takes you and may help you to rediscover the joy of wonder you had as a child.● Getting stuff done. If you're not moving forward, you're going to get caught spinning your wheels. These bouts of stagnation are often associated with periods of depression—at least that was how it was for Dr. Goulston—but if you want your life to continue being full of determination, enthusiasm, and fulfillment, then you need to be the force that drives it forward.● Personal responsibility. When we're sick or struggling, victimhood is a seductive trap, because in your mind, it lets you off the hook by blaming your problem on others or at least making it their responsibility to fix. Taking personal responsibility prevents and furthermore earns you respect from others and yourself. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5948889/advertisement

Dr. Mark Goulston, an admitted dyslexic, dropped out of medical school twice. At one point, the Dean of Students told him, “You've been kicked out.” However, after being told his med school career was over, he was given a trifecta of hope. Dr. Goulston did become a practicing clinical psychiatrist, a UCLA professor of psychiatry for over 20 years and the author of 8 books. He is also considered a one of the foremost thought leaders and coaches in the area of empathic listening with his book, “Just Listen,” becoming the top book on listening in the world. Dr. Goulston discusses RTA (Re-traumatization avoidance), Surgical Empathy and what to do with a hijacked amygdala.

Let's get real about your relationship with work. You're praised for your stellar work ethic and revered for your awe-inspiring wins. But there's a dark side to achieving that no one talks about. This episode probes that space. My guest is Dr Mark Goulston, a former professor of psychiatry at UCLA for 25 years, who also trained FBI and police in hostage negotiation. He's written nine books and has featured as a behavioural expert in The New York Times, Oprah, The Wall Street Journal. Mark is also the inventor of Surgical Empathy, a process that unlocks and frees people from attachment to dysfunctional mindsets. You'll learn where addiction achievement might come from – something Mark calls ‘psychological adhesions.' You'll also learn how to apply Surgical Empathy to yourself with a delightfully unorthodox tool -- which works, I've been trying it! This conversation is intelligent, tender, and radically practical. Join us. Sidebar: Not sure if you might have achievement addiction? I'm not sure any online test can definitely answer that (always seek professional help), but the link below can get you thinking. Lisa is joined by Dr. Mark Goulston who is the co-author, with Diana Hendel, of Why Cope When You Can Heal? He is the inventor of Surgical Empathy, an approach that helps psychologically traumatized people heal from their "inside out" by causing them to "feel felt" and less alone in the core of their pain, feel relief and drain the "psychological pus" by crying it out which helps start a process of healing. His book, "Just Listen" Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone, went on to become the top book on listening in the world because it shows readers the secret to getting through to absolutely anyone (a.k.a. hack into) by listening. His first book, Get Out of Your Own Way: Overcoming Self-Defeating Behavior, published in 1996 has been in the top five "Self Help Books" at Amazon for 5 years. He is the author or co-author of eight books and speaks, teaches, coaches and mentors leaders and CEO's globally. Dr. Mark Goulston has been described as a "people hacker." Starting off as a clinical interventional psychiatrist and UCLA professor of psychiatry, he learned to "hack" into the minds of suicidal and potentially violent individuals to prevent acts of destruction to others or themselves. He next went on to train FBI and police hostage negotiators. He has since expanded his work to "Hacking Genius" and speaks and provides webinars internationally on: "Thinking Like Steve Jobs - How to Create 'Gotta Have It.'" His company, The Goulston Group, is hired by Founders, CEO's and Boards of Directors to help them create a "gotta have it!" response to their services and products (which seamlessly translates into "gonna buy/hire it," a "gotta work there" response in outside talent they're recruiting, a "gonna get it done" response from employees and a "gotta invest there" response in investors. Mark Goulston is a passionate social activist and is the White co-host on the weekly Black radio show, Zo What Morning Show, where he focuses on leveling the playing field and empowering the African American community. He has also launched a campaign to "Heal the World, One Conversation at a Time" at Patreon. He contributes to the Harvard Business Review, Huffington Post, Fast Company, Business Insider and writes the "Closing Bell" for C-Suite Quarterly Magazine. Frequently called upon to share his expertise with the media, he has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Fortune, Newsweek, Time, and Reuters; has offered commentary on NPR, CNN, and Fox News; and has appeared on the Oprah and Today shows. Too many people who have been deeply traumatized by COVID, violence, cancer, bankruptcy or divorce will tell you that they got past it, but they never got over it. They're not the same person as they were before. They feel more tentative, have their guard up, and don't step into anything new with two feet. They'll tell you that coping is better than not coping, but it's not the same as feeling fully alive, solid, and secure. What if there were a way to not just cope, but begin to heal from trauma to feel fully alive? In his new book, Why Cope When You Can Heal?, co-authored with Dr. Diana Hendel, our guest Dr. Mark Goulston introduces the world and now us to Surgical Empathy an approach he invented and expanded to people with PTSD that helps them to finally begin to heal.

Dr. Goulston is the inventor of Surgical Empathy, an approach that helps psychologically traumatized people heal from their "inside out" by causing them to "feel felt" and less alone in the core of their pain, feel relief and drain the "psychological pus" by crying it out which helps start a process of healing.Starting off as a clinical interventional psychiatrist and UCLA professor of psychiatry, he learned to "hack" into the minds of suicidal and potentially violent individuals to prevent acts of destruction to others or themselves. He next went on to train FBI and police hostage negotiators. He has since expanded his work to "Hacking Genius" and speaks and provides webinars internationally on: "Thinking Like Steve Jobs - How to Create 'Gotta Have It.'"His book, "Just Listen" Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone, went on to become the top book on listening in the world because it shows readers the secret to getting through to absolutely anyone (a.k.a. hack into) by listening. His first book, Get Out of Your Own Way: Overcoming Self-Defeating Behavior, published in 1996 has been in the top five "Self Help Books" at Amazon for 5 years. He is the author or co-author of eight books and speaks, teaches, coaches and mentors leaders and CEO's globally.Dr. Mark Goulston has been described as a "people hacker."He contributes to the Harvard Business Review, Huffington Post, Fast Company, Business Insider and writes the "Closing Bell" for C-Suite Quarterly Magazine. In his new book, Why Cope When You Can Heal?, co-authored with Dr. Diana Hendel, our guest Dr. Mark Goulston introduces the world and now us to Surgical Empathy an approach he invented and expanded to people with PTSD that helps them to finally begin to heal.
