The Markhor is one of Central and South Asia's most charismatic mountain ungulates. The species is scattered across the Karakoram Range, Afghanistan, and the western Himalayas. The Markhor, often called the “Screw-horned Goat” is the national animal of Pakistan. In Persian and Pahto languages, the word “mārkhor” translates as "snake-eater" highlighting the ancient belief that the markhor would actively kill and consume snakes. The Markhor is currently listed as “Near Threatened” by the IUCN Red List. Across its range, hunting is the primary threat to the Markhor. In Pakistan, the Markhor falls victim to the lucrative trophy hunting business. Meanwhile, the hunting of markhor for bushmeat and traditional beliefs is still prevalent in Afghanistan and India, despite such practices being banned. In India, habitat loss and fragmentation due to climate change and livestock overgazing remain a major threat. LIke most mountain ungulates in the Himalayas, the markhor is not spared from the free-ranging dog menace in India. In this episode of the Think Wildlife Podcast, Tanushree Srivastava and I discuss Markhor conservation in Kashmir. Tanushree, who is one of the leading scientists researching Himalaya's ungulates, also spearheads Wildlife Trust of India's “ Kashmir Markhor Recovery Project”. This is a public episode. Kahaani's Misrepresented founder and podcast host Niki Aggarwal joins Anu and Tanushree at The Desi Condition for a thoughtful conversation on burnout. More specifically, we approach the topic of burnout as a result of the inability to separate identity and career, as it goes for many, and thus learning to take "acountability" for it. We discuss how to distinguish when you need a break versus when you should actually quit. The conversation turns to why some mainstream self-care is actually just capitalism at work, and share personal self-care tactics that actually work. In addition, we discuss the necessity of mitigating guilt (regarding enjoyment, or time spent not working) as a self-care tactic as well as the power of giving yourself choice. We ponder the question of what makes us feel productive, and how can we make self-care part of that feeling of productivity? About Speaker: Tanushree's keen interest in education and love for children lead her to many non-formal learning spaces as a young person navigating the frameworks of society. The question of right education was integral in her explorations, where she discovered education as a way of life. In 2008, she was part of a group that started a learning space called Shibumi, on the outskirts of Bangalore. Can one nurture a mind that is awake? We're here to deliver the second installment of our magical and insightful conversation with the legendary Sajeeb Saha, AKA Jai Wolf! In this episode, Sajeeb dives into everything from his musical influences and inspiration, to the story behind the name Jai Wolf. He provides insight into his creative process, describing one that pulls from many different worlds and experiences to evoke intense emotions and to produce music with movie-inspired theatricality. He also explains how he tries to make his live shows authentically him, placing an emphasis on world-building. He largely credits creative genius and hip-hop visionary Kanye West for his 808s-era visceral and undeniable originality as influential to his music. Sajeeb recounts his love for Graduation and even credits Kanye-inspired beats and synth patterns as being emulated in his track, “Indian Summer.” The conversation takes an amusing turn as Tanushree, and Ravi ask Sajeeb fun questions about his Bengali heritage, cats, and goals for the future. Sajeeb fondly reminisces how fate led him to become a full-time cat dad in 2020. The episode ends with Sajeeb offering words of advice to South Asian creatives attempting to find their way out of adversity and/or to find motivation. What happens when you mix South Asian Bengali and EDM artistry into one? You get the legendary Jai Wolf! In part 1 of a 2-episode installment, Tanushree and Ravi interview the Bangladeshi-born and NYC-bred Sajeeb Saha. They discuss the origins of Jai Wolf, and how historically significant and integral music and art are to South Asian culture. Sajeeb recounts how he broke into the world of electronic music with a classical music background and how his South Asian Bengali identity found its way into his music, leading to the birth of “Indian Summer.” He discusses his artistic evolution and the importance of figuring out who you are as an artist to overcome creative roadblocks and to define what “commercial success” means. In this insightful conversation, Tanushree, Ravi, and Sajeeb dive into the impact of the “immigrant struggle,” including the expectations on South Asian artists and creatives passed on by Desi parents advocating for stable, STEM careers. They explore South Asian representation in the music and entertainment industries and the lackluster South Asian solidarity for/amongst creatives, comedians and artists. Sajeeb credits competitiveness and tribal mentality dating back to colonialism as the foundation for this phenomenon, and the conversation takes a hopeful turn as the three discuss how immigration has helped South Asians become more supportive of one another. The episode ends with Sajeeb and our hosts musing over the hopes of an emergence of a community coming together to form a larger support system for South Asian creatives and artists in the near future --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-desi-condition/support

As a child, Tanushree Gupta from India found paintings by her mother that were in poor condition. She was enthusiastic about restoring them. Today she is an art conservator. She has maintained her enthusiasm and joy in dealing with paintings and other art objects and has now proven her skills as a conservator and researcher with a doctoral degree. Her most recent project was a new storage concept for the Napier Museum in Kerala, southern India. High humidity and temperatures make it difficult for the art objects to be stored there. She redesigned the storage with an international team of researchers and restored existing damage to artworks such as mold."Every object is a new project," she says in this podcast episode, because you cannot close from one object to another one. You always start at zero with a comprehensive analysis before any restoration can be done. That can take up to a month. One particularly important project to her was the recent re-restoration of her mother's paintings. Because asked about any mistakes, Tanushree explains with a laugh that those were the one objects where she did pretty much everything wrong. Today she knows better.Tanushree Gupta has been a recurring OeAD scholarship holder since 2011 in the funding programs Ernst Mach worldwide and technology grants East / Central and South Asia (today Ernst Mach Eurasia-Pacific Uninet).
In an already beaten down market, Thursday's carnage on D-Street dragged indices to fresh five-month lows with the BSE Sensex slipping below the 37,000 mark. On the other hand, the Nifty, too, breached 11,000 mark in the intra-day trade. Mixed corporate earnings, weak domestic and global cues, and continuous selling by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were among the key reasons for the fall. The current scenario begs the question whether we will see the rebound any time soon? Amid the weakening market situation, Tanushree Banerjee sees the Rebirth of India opportunity. Tanushree believes there are 50 irreversible trends that will the push Sensex to 1,00,000. Meanwhile, the global markets also witnessed the sell-off on the back of escalating trade tensions and fed rate cut this week. Now, after the fed’s rate cut, market participants will watch out for RBI’s monetary policy stance next week. Will RBI cut the rates? Tune in to know more…
Recently, the Mumbai police has submitted a B Summary report in the Tanushree Dutta sexual harassment case against Nana Pateker, citing lack of evidence as the reason for the closure of their inquiry. The report also stated that Tanushree’s complaint seemed “malicious and fake”, and could have been filed to seek revenge. In an interview to The Quint, Tanushree opens up on why she thinks the investigation in her case has been compromised and alleges that Nana Patekar earns “crores of rupees” through Naam Foundation, which is supposed to work for welfare of farmers, enough to squash any case against him.
Throughout the week, one slogan that took over the market and country as a whole was, Ab ki baar phir Modi Sarkar. Stock markets celebrated Modi’s victory as Sensex touched 40,000 mark and Nifty touched 12,000 for the first time ever. What does this mean for the market going forward? Tanushree strongly believes in India's future potential. She is looking at the stocks and trends that are likely to get a major push with the Modi government returning to power. We have got one uncertainty out of the way. The one related to elections. How do you play the market now post elections? This is who Tanushree Ishani Das is in her own words - "Dibrugarh, Assam, Bangalore, London and now Hyderabad, I believe the world is my oyster. The year 2017 gave me the opportunity to venture into the entrepreneurial world. It was exciting but at the same time nerve wrecking because I realised that I have a huge responsibility on my shoulders- what I think or how I think could probably shape other people's thoughts, what I do could inspire or influence the actions of people; but I'm here to make a difference, break stereotypes and grab every opportunity possible to do my bit and strongly contribute to a community of womenpreneurs. Ex Goldman and KCL alumni, a publisher author, I am a daughter, sister, friend, wife and a human in progress." Tanushree's tryst with entrepreneurship initially started with leading the Mount Carmel College Entrepreneurship cell Initium. Her career started with Goldman Sachs in 2010 from Mount Carmel College (Bangalore). She then went down to London, to pursue M Sc. in Organisational Psychiatry & Psychology from King's College and finally at LookUp where she did her last gig before starting BodyCafé. Her research “How Appraisal affects motivation in India & UK,” has recently been published in the form of a book by Lambert Academic Publishing. Tanushree is ‘one of the founders' of BodyCafé :) BodyCafé is an organic health and wellness brand to inspire people to adopt to a healthy lifestyle and make real choices. One of the interesting bits of conversation was where Tanu speaks of her GOT-Soap (Dracaris) which had an infusion of dragon-fruit. It was in response to a question on what keeps her creative juices flowing that Tanu brings this up and the answer is something worth listening to. When asked what her inputs would be for people who would want to chart a path towards their passion, she says - "Don't follow trends, listen to your gut. Do things yourself and never expect things to arrive on a platter. In case it happens, one will never realise it's value." Tanu fondly reflects on how set-backs are a part of the journey and the way it helps her stay grounded when asked how she deals with the incredible ebbs and flows that come with being an entrepreneur. A huge thanks to Vishnu from Writer and Geek Show who helped set up this interview and for permission to use the swanky recording set up!
