This week the crew gets drunk on sangrias/vodka while talking about different reboots, remakes that we think should or shouldn't happen, and what media would work in other forms? Tezeta deals with fire alarms, Jake goes off about Power Rangers, Devin makes a lot of Drake Bell sexual predator jokes. You know what to do

Ethan Brown means so many things to both me and the world. Besides the titles of son, brother, father, husband, friend, bartender, boss, and expert, he has earned the right to be called kind, thoughtful, clever, witty, warm, and a bucketful of other things, too. He's the portal to what's hip. He's a vehicle for what's hilarious. He's the embodiment of passionate when it comes to the things he loves, and his presence is the elixir you need to right yourself.Ethan blew my mind with his selection of badass records, except for that he really didn't.That is -- right, wrong, or otherwise -- I had a natural expectation that what he would come up with would leave me feeling like a musical novice, and I was not off the mark in unintentionally thinking that that would be the case.I mean…It's hard to believe that I've somehow managed to churn out 14 of these sons o' guns, and not one guest has disappointed me. In fact, I've really, really enjoyed every last one of the conversations and the records that accompanied them. All of them have been fun; a large majority have been surprising and educational. And if you like nice, round numbers like I do, the 15th installment wound up being the perfect slot for Ethan in that each privilege I get in the form of hanging with a fantastic human while chatting life and music refuels the tank that often feels somewhat depleted upon the conclusion of producing a finished episode. And it seems as though laughter is the primary component in the fuel of said recharging; no one has made me laugh harder than Ethan, and that's a tribute to his electric personality.Ethan and I have seen the other side of midnight together a time or two, and each of those occasions were both some of the best nights I've ever had and precursors to the worst mornings rememberable (or barely rememberable). I recall one evening at a Waldo watering hole in which we were having shots of some concoction called Five Alive.I know. Makes you think akin to fruit punch, right? Nope. Pretty gross, actually. But we had more than one a piece. And the next day we agreed to forever call those red beverages, Hello and Have a Shitty Tomorrow. On another occasion, I had to be retrieved -- due to overindulgence -- from his housewarming party, and between his front porch and my then-fiancee's car, I lost my keys and stepped directly in the mud I'd been attempting to avoid. Pretty sure a portion of the evening (once safely home) was spent on the bathroom floor.Anyway, Ethan picked Hailu Mergia's Tezeta, Super Ape by The Upsetters (a Lee "Scratch" Perry outfit), El-P's Fantastic Damage, Too Hard to Swallow by UGK, and GZA's Liquid Swords. And if you're anything like me, first glance at that list might yield a heavy dose of, Huh?! Turns out, the thing's a pile of gems. And that's kinda the point of this whole deal. I enjoyed this conversation so much. Hope you do, too. Thanks for stopping by. If you happened to share this episode with a friend, I wouldn't be mad at ya'. And if you're viewing on the YouTube channel, it'd sure be swell if you hit “like,” and “subscribe” on your way outta here. Oh, and by the way, if you happen upon Ethan out there on them streets, please refer to him by his true given name, Pipecock Jackson. Thank you. That is all.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the intro/outro audio clips. They are samples from Coolbone's cover of the Bill Withers tune, “Use Me,” and it's off of their 1996 record called Brass-Hop, c/o Broadcast Music, Inc.

The Game of Nerds Podcast Episode #25 – Amazing Animation with Tezeta Gant

On this episode of The Game of Nerds Podcast, we sit down with Let's Talk Fandoms Podcast host Tezeta Gant for the second time. This episode was slated for last year, but her episode was part of the infamous microphone fiasco of 2021. It was only fitting that we sat down for "take two" and got an even better conversation than the first. We start the podcast chatting about our love of Netflix's documentaries and how Nick Miller is our soul animal. But this episode is all about animation, so let's jump in! Tezeta and I are of similar ages and grew up during the 90s when animation reigned king. So it's no secret that animation holds a special place in our hearts. It's been amazing to see animation projects thrive during the pandemic since creators can do these series at home much more effortlessly than on-set filming. Just look at the latest Disney+ day and how they announced many animated series for the coming year. Animation is one of those creative processes that I'm in awe of and aware of how many TALENTED people it takes to create some of these series/movies that we've loved. We talk about this extensively in the Anime episode and the Voice Acting episode of this podcast. But first, the age-old question, Disney or Nickelodeon? Which did you watch more? It was safe to say that Disney was more for their movies, and Nickelodeon was more known for their animated cartoons. We talk extensively about the early start to watch parties with cousins and neighbors to watch the newest animated movie. I reminisce about Saturday morning cartoons with my dad and brother, which is a tradition I still hold with my daughter to this day. It brings up the point that these animation series tie into our nostalgia factor and critical moments in our lives. The best example I had was watching Toy Story when it first came out on VHS with my little brother on my lap and how much he loved it. Marvel came home the day Toy Story 4 came out, and we watched it, and I bawled. It was the whole circle of nostalgia hitting me like a ton of bricks. Animation has also been known to push the boundaries. Tezeta and I had similar childhoods where certain animated shows were off-limits. Ren and Stimpy were one of those series. In retrospect, in comparison to South Park, it's nothing, but at the time, we have to remember it was the "South Park" of the time. There was nothing ruder or cruder on tv other than Bevis and Butthead. Cartoon Network was also a network that was a hit or miss with most families. Tezeta wasn't allowed to watch Courage the Cowardly Dog. Why we might never know?!? But this diverted our conversation into a meaningful discussion about how animation is viewed currently. A lot of people see animated movies or television as "childish." Tezeta brings up a great point about how animation really has gotten away with many things that would be impossible to explain or talk about. (We are looking at you, Big Mouth!) Most people are introduced to animation as children, so when they recall animation is usually from a frame of mind or a time/place in that person's life. We agree that animation has pushed the boundaries for good. It goes back to the original awe factor. It takes talented voice actors to make these characters come to life, plus the insane creativity of illustrators and creators on top of the fact of someone coming up with this entire universe for these characters to live in. If you think about it, animation has nothing on live-action films. The possibilities are frankly endless. Not only is animation pushing the boundaries, but it also gives us tools to explain things that may be hard to do otherwise. Movies like Inside Out and Lion King give children ways to explain their feelings or complex topics like death. Big Mouth is one of the most recent animation hits that has pushed boundaries on South Park and Rick and Morty levels. If you haven't heard about the series, it's about a group of middle schoolers going through puberty.

Episode 6 of That Scene, That Song features a conversation with actor and model Gaia Weiss who has featured on screen in Judy, Vikings, Mary Queen of Scots and The Legend of Hercules. Doing ballet from the age of four, and drama from 7, performing and being on stage was always in her blood. Through a career that she says 'just happened' is thread of tenacity and doing the hard work. The Scenes Live and Become - a film that Gaia describes as a lesson in humanity. It is the story of Christian Ethiopian mother who saves her son by sending him to Israel, where he is adopted by a family in Tel Aviv and must acclimate to his new life while guarding the secret of his past. The particular scene that moved Gaia was where the mother implores her son to 'go, live and become'. Cold War by Pawel Pawlikowski is described as an impossible love story in impossible times. The film is a passionate love story between a man and a woman who meet in the ruins of post-war Poland. With vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, they are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, it’s the tale of a couple separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate. The Songs Jerusalem by Alpha Blondy with an inspiring message of community and meaning of togetherness; something we can all take some inspiration from these days. Tezeta by Mulatu Astatke that joins Gaia whenever she needs to recharge from the frenetic nature of life. If you have nothing left, you can't give anymore. This song will fill your soul. Gaia discovered it under extraordinary circumstances: she was at Sting's house in Tuscany listening to Mia Moretti sing a captivating song that caressed her spirit. She Shazam'd it, and we get to listen to it today.
