Week 1 of our annual series, "That ONE Thing," at Renaissance.Watch each week as our guest speakers answer the question: "What's that ONE thing God has taught you that has impacted your faith walk more than anything else?"This week's special guest is Robert Kreps!Sunday, June 1, 2025. 10:45 AM Gathering.
We're back on the albums again! Part TWENTY EIGHT 30-21. - This week features Ms. Lauryn Hill, Sam Cooke, The Clash, and seven other artists to continue this massive undertaking. Hmm, who else could there be? ;) - Barely squeezed in the albums! Def not enough time for Poetry Time. But you already knew that. Here's the written version for you: ____________________________________________________ What I Have Learned So Far Meditation is old and honorable, so why should I not sit, every morning of my life, on the hillside, looking into the shining world? Because, properly attended to, delight, as well as havoc, is suggestion. Can one be passionate about the just, the ideal, the sublime, and the holy, and yet commit to no labor in its cause? I don't think so. All summations have a beginning, all effect has a story, all kindness begins with the sown seed. Thought buds toward radiance. The gospel of light is the crossroads of—indolence, or action. Be ignited, or be gone. -by Mary Oliver ____________________________________________________ To honor the top 100 albums (and my favorite poet), the poems for the rest of this series will all be coming from Mary Oliver :) - ONLY 20 ALBUMS TO GO!!! I'm freaking out. (I'm *really really really* going to miss this project once we're through.) Onward and upward we continue. - Oh it's a major endeavor, alright. I'm going to try to listen to at least 10 albums a week for the rest of the year! Yeah, I'm not joking. Media, art, and entertainment publication Paste Magazine came out with a list of the 300 best albums and we're going to go through them all! Well, I'm going to. And then we're going to talk about it! Great tracks, themes, history, info, related artists, cultural context, personal experiences- they're all going to play a part in these reviews. Totally stoked because I love music. (And a little intimidated! Because this is a lot to process) - If we keep up with an episode per week featuring 10 albums each, we'll just about finish by the end of 2024. - There are only two of these left. (Gasp.) Take a break, listen to some of this music, and I'll see you Monday, C :) - BONUS POEM If you've made it this far down into the description, then you get an extra surprise today! Some time ago (I'm not quite sure when, but it could have been exactly a year ago!) I came across a poem from modern poet Lyndsey Rush that mentioned today's date (December 13, 2024) specifically. Ooh, it would be fun to do this poem on the show on that exact date! I thought to myself at the time. So apparently I saved the link to it, and set a reminder on my phone to pop up yesterday and remind me. And then of course promptly forgot about it. Until the reminder resurfaced! Just as it was supposed to. But who was to know when I set it that we'd be in 300 Albums territory on this specific day? I had no idea. (Don't you love that about life? You almost never know what's coming.) So not only did I not have time to include this poem in the audio of today's episode, but I had already chosen a poem by Mary Oliver to fit into today's poetry slot. What's a gal to do? Include it anyway! So here's the text of the additional poem, for your enjoyment and to assuage my original desire and intent: Same Time Next Year? This time next year I hope you're gobsmacked by all the wishes and wins that life lobbed your way I hope, by December 13, 2024, that your worries about That One Thing have lifted, and you're so far past the pain you have to squint to see it I hope in 365 days or so, that you find yourself Pleased as punch Walking on air Up to your tits in contentment Certain (but open to surprises) that it can't get any better than this

Then once they find something that they love to do, how are we able to put them in positions where they're getting enough positive experiences where it builds on itself and crescendos and there's momentum building for them to follow it wherever it goes.” 30:00“Where we find ourselves now in society or how we view wins and losses, success and failure, is making this assumption that what kids are doing is a reflection of you being a great parent or a great coach. I tell coaches all the time you understand that you are basing your happiness and your sense of worth on 15, 16, 17, and 18-year-olds.” 34:12“We have to make the process, although hard, we have to make it fun.” 35:31“You can have your best game, best game plan, kids are on it, they're executing, they're playing together, and you can still lose the game.” 39:32“There has to be a certain level of obsessiveness to master something.” 40:24“Isn't that what we want for all our kids, whether you're a coach or a parent, you want them to feel enriched by what they are doing, you want it to become a part of them.” 42:29“One of the things we often talk about is the concept of safe people or safe places.” 50:35“You look at sports and you look at teams, you look at the coach-player relationship, you want to create a safe place for kids to be able to operate. You want to create safe relationships between athletes and coaches so that real growth can happen.” 53:22“What is your main intent; to demonstrate your anger that they're not doing something, or they're doing it wrong or helping them to do it right? 57:42“If we're not asking the right questions, if we're not identifying what's really happening inside us or around us, then whatever collaboration or solution that we come up with, it will always miss the mark.” 1:02:03“Wisdom is pattern recognition.” -Wendy quoting Chip Conley @ 1:02:42“Our mission as coaches is to serve the greater good of our players, not our own selfish ego.” -Wendy quoting Russell @ 1:05:47“When one player or a group within the team is treated with different rules than the rest of the players, coach-player trust is broken and the team will fracture in pressure moments that will require team unity.” -Wendy quoting Russell @ 1:06:12“I have no problem, as a coach, taking an L if it meant that in the long run, the team would function better. I have no problem taking an L and not having a player play if it emphasizes to that player the importance of being a good teammate,or being on time, or treating your teammates well. It comes back to that self-awareness thing.” 1:12:26“It's about being in the moment and then doing the next right thing.” -Wendy @ 1:36:47“Through this whole process, I just realized that I'm high strung.” 1:39:12“Giving yourself permission to forgive yourself. Episode 3 of the Her One Thing podcast is all about learning how to take ownership over your own life story. Host Kristin Zeier reveals that how you approach your life story is a spectrum. At one end, you have being a passive bystander in your life story. At the other end of the spectrum, you have being an active creator. Like many things in life, how you connect to your life story is not black and white. It's not one or the other. You can fall anywhere on that life story participant spectrum. When a person is a passive bystander in her life story, she watches the world unfold around her. Examples of what being a passive bystander could look like include:Watching the events in your life unfold around you and being in reactive modeNot creating an intentional plan & following a path to get thereFeeling like a victim to the things that are happening around youFeeling like you have no control over the futureFeeling like the universe is conspiring against youShifting blame to othersThinking, "Why Me?"Thinking thoughts like, "Having an amazing life would be great but it's just not in the cards for me"It could be as simple as complacencyConversely, when someone is at the other end and is an active creator of their own life story, she is proactive. Below are some examples of what being an active creator might look like:Owning the fact that you cannot always control the circumstances around you but you can control how you reactTaking accountabilityTaking inventory of your strengths and weaknesses and owning themBeing open to "failure"Consistently developing yourself and being in a growth mindsetInvesting in yourself and your futureBecoming self-aware of your thoughts and learning how to choose your thoughts to compliment the life you are creatingIt's important to note that you cannot predict the future or possible know how events will always unfold in the future. Accepting that is part of being an active creator. When you changes your perspective and you start to view things from this creator lens, you take ownership for the story you create around those events and circumstances. You take back the power by choosing the narrative. One of the biggest takeaways of this episode is that you always get to choose the narrative of your own life story. This goes for the past, present and future. The choice is always yours. Your life story is one of the biggest assets you will ever have. It's what makes you unique and no one else can ever compete with your own life story. Lastly, Kristin shares an exercise that you can do to flip the narrative on your own life story. Michael Gormley's "That ONE Thing" parish mission is changing hearts and minds all over the country. Originally written for my his own parish, this mission has been adapted into numerous forms to meet the needs of different groups: the standard 3-day mission, a weekend retreat for high school students, a 1-day retreat for RCIA candidates, and more. This parish mission was inspired by SHERRY WEDDELL'S FORMING INTENTIONAL DISCIPLES in particular, the chapter dealing with repentance. A Greek Orthodox priest mentioned how he rarely preached or talked about repentance. I realized that I've never done that. I helped form and instruct people on how to make a good confession, but never really explicitly explored the area of helping people repent. Rooted and grounded in the endless mercy of God from the first talk, the second talk leads people into repentance by asking them one question: What is that one thing - sin, wound, label, or fear - that is keeping you from a better relationship with God. Pastors have been shocked at how deep confessions go after this portion. The final talk hones in on two things: how to stay free of that one thing, and how to get more involved in my faith. Streamed live on Feb 8, 2021 Parish Mission Night #1 - "That One Thing" with Michael Gormley, live broadcast from St Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish KS

Tom Grote has been Publisher of The Star-News for almost 40 years. He describes the paper as a local “property,” emphasizing the power of journalism as a record or journal of a community—its people, culture, and events. This does not ensure objectivity. Accuracy, balance, and fairness are the values of a paper. You may know about That One Thing where Tom is not objective, and he passionately relates why.We consider people’s attitudes toward the media, often negative. Tom explains how unbiased journalism is a relatively recent value—perhaps our news is more accurate than we think.Hear Tom hold forth on Letters to the Editor, the favorite story of his tenure, and the nitty gritty on how a local journal brings more value to a community than social media content. We debate the pros and cons of print versus digital, and Tom shares his preference on how to receive the news, which may surprise you. He has some ideas about our responsibilities as well.Get a sense of the wide-ranging breadth and life of a community—what our resident journalist chronicler must know, remember, and continually emphasize.Special note: the podcast was recorded at CUB in March 2020 before Shelter in Place restrictions took place.

I often get asked what my #1 piece of advice would be for students to get a job. It was hard for me to just think of one, but after thinking a lot about my experience as a student as well as the experiences of the students that I've helped I've decided on the most important piece of advice. I have finally picked THAT ONE THING that if done will lead to you landing a job with your dream company. That one thing is becoming the ideal candidate for your dream company. Research shows that when a company hires the wrong person it costs them 1x - 5x that person's first-year salary. So what I have found is that most recruiters are hiring the student that they feel would be the safer bet. When you do the research and become the ideal candidate then you lower their risk, which will increase your chances of receiving the job offer. It has to be sustainable. You could have a productivity system of working 72 hours straight at the beginning of the week and get everything done. Cool, you can do that but you're probably going to last two weeks, tops. This is a long marathon. I think the best way to conceptualize it is as a marathon of sprints. So you sprint—you work really hard on something—you stop, you rest, you reassess, you analyze, you improve, and then you sprint again. Fundamentally if that whole arc is not sustainable in the long run, you're just going to crash and burn. — Eric Brown, HEx Podcast #28 At HighExistence we've had many interns start working with us all excited and eager. Many told us they had been fans of the blog for years. They would work hard and do anything it takes. They would seize this opportunity with both hands. Then it came time to WORK. Crunch time. Effort. Dedication. Good communication. Innovative contributions. Self-discipline. Let me be clear, many of the interns who worked for us did a stellar job. I'm still friends with many to this day. But there has only ever been one intern who went from a small unpaid position to a fully fledged HighExistence team member who is not just useful to have on the team, but is indispensable. Meet Eric Brown: Director of Operations at Apotheosis Retreats, Leader of the Apotheosis Integration Experience, Manager of Social Media, Editor at HighExistence, and all around productivity ninja... Eric has an amazing ability to practice what he preaches. He's the guy that follows up on his recommendations. Works hard. Meditates. Reads. Organizes. And lives a "HighExistence." He is someone who is always striving to improve without any of that frantic, frustrated stress most of us have. To Eric, self-improvement is not about running away from a person he doesn't like, but about skipping toward a reality he prefers. What you're about to listen to is a 3-hour conversation between Eric and I, and as you might imagine, we cover a lot of topics! There is more that is real than what you can touch. When you touch money, you're touching cotton or paper. Money is an idea; a country is an idea; a government is an idea, so there are things that we consider real that we can't touch. Once I accepted that... that was a big catalyst. Because then you get into exploring emotion, exploring subtle energy in the body, and so on. — Eric Brown, HEx Podcast #28 WHAT WE DISCUSS IN THIS EPISODE: How does one balance spirituality with powerful work ethic? The systems-based productivity approach Eric learned from startup culture. Why everyone needs to start a blog, and how to do it. The fear we all have of putting our our creative work and what to do about it. How everyone wants to be successful but nobody wants to start at the beginning. The comfortable good is holding you back from the difficult great. The incredible but forgotten value of apprenticeship. Erics step-by-step approach that made him indispensable at HighExistence. How to design your own optimal productivity system. The way Eric prioritizes his tasks to get a lot done while remaining happy. How quick fix culture is preventing us from practicing deep spirituality. Mindfulness of the present moment is the foundation Eric's life. Jon and Eric make public productivity commitments. Eric explains how we can manage our time to get that mysterious "work/life balance." The value of psychedelics for both work and contentment. Analogue vs. digital productivity tools. Why no system will work without the right intention setting ritual. Eric's view on the pomodoro technique, with pro tips. Why we need to focus on THAT ONE THING each day, instead of multitasking. Jon and Eric's favorite mobile and desktop apps. How to get rid of bad habits and replace them with good routines that stick. How we run Apotheosis retreats and what they're all about. WAY MORE...
