She is accused of intentionally hitting 25-year-old Paige Jenkins with her car at Cumberland Mall on July 16, resulting in severe injuries that led to Jenkins' death at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. She is currently being held without bond. ......................……... read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: botched   Darius Favor Butler and Jeremiah Eshaun Howard have been indicted by a Cobb County grand jury for murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. The charges stem from a failed armed robbery at a north Cobb home in May. The incident resulted in the death of a third co-conspirator, Anthony Jones, and injuries to Butler. Jones and Butler attempted to rob two individuals who subsequently shot them in self-defense. Although the robbery targets were unharmed, Butler and Howard still face murder charges under Georgia law, which holds assailants responsible for the death of co-conspirators during a crime. Butler is in custody without bond, while Howard's status is unclear.   Story 3: carr   Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, who is speculated to run for governor after Brian Kemp's term, addressed the Cobb County Republican Women's Club. Carr highlighted his accomplishments in office, including his work on crime, and criticized President Joe Biden and the direction of the Democratic Party. Carr emphasized the need to maintain Republican control of state government and urged attendees to continue supporting the party. He defended law enforcement, discussed his office's efforts against human trafficking and gang activities, and expressed his commitment to holding those engaging in violence accountable. The current agreement sees 19.75% of Marietta's hotel-motel revenue go to the authority, but the city council has voted to defer action on a new agreement until the next mayor and council take office in 2026. The decision could impact the authority's plans for a major renovation, including a new on-site hotel. The authority argues that stable revenue is crucial for its redevelopment plans.   STORY 5: k9   The Georgia Police K9 Foundation has provided a LOF Streetfighter Vest, valued at $1,200, to K9 Axel of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. K9 Axel, a Belgium Malinois, is based in Acworth and serves in Region 1 of the DNR, covering Cobb County. The vest, designed to be lightweight and protect K9s from overheating, helps regulate body temperature in Georgia's hot climate. The Georgia Police K9 Foundation is a volunteer-based nonprofit that raises awareness about the contributions of police K9s and supports their protection and safety during dangerous situations.   Story 6: circle   More than 2,000 students, teachers, and supporters gathered at North Cobb Christian School for their annual Circle of Prayer event, emphasizing the school's Christian faith. The event also marked the school's 40th anniversary. Participants circled the football field, offering prayers for students' growth, successful school years, faculty, staff, local communities, the nation, and the world. The event included hymns, guided prayers, and worship singing. The school's student life director, Parker Smith, highlighted the importance of prayer for spiritual growth and its reminder of God's control. The Circle of Prayer has become a cherished tradition at the school.   We'll be back in a moment   Break: Powers – elon - ESOG   Story 7: pipe   The new pipe organ at First United Methodist Church is nearly 85% installed, with about 3,180 pipes needing individual tuning and adjustments for optimal sound. The organ, which arrived in July 2021, is replacing the church's 50-year-old pipe organ that was in disrepair. The installation is expected to be completed by November 5th, coinciding with a consecration service. The German-built organ by Glatter-Götz cost $1.5 million and took 18 months to construct. The church's organist, Brian Parks, explained that consultants are fine-tuning the pipes to ensure proper sound quality and volume, likening the process to blending an orchestra.   Story 8: board   Unlike other local government bodies in Cobb County, the Marietta school board does not broadcast or record its meetings for public viewing. Board members and the superintendent have varying opinions on the matter. Only one board member, Jaillene Hunter, expressed explicit support for making meetings available through live streams or recordings, emphasizing transparency. Other members had concerns about the cost of implementing such changes and the impact on the close-knit community feel of in-person meetings. The district had experimented with live streaming during the pandemic, but the impact on engagement was minimal. The board chair, Kerry Minervini, noted that current resources are better focused on education rather than recording meetings.   Story 9: debut   The Walker Wolverines, under new coach TJ Anderson, showed significant improvement from last year's disappointing season as they triumphed over the Indians with a commanding 43-0 shutout victory. The team started strong and maintained control throughout the game. Coach Anderson emphasizes focusing on the present season and improving fundamentals. Quarterback Aidan Charles had a standout performance with 116 passing yards, complemented by a robust rushing game that contributed to their 371 yards of total offense. The defense played exceptionally well, holding the Indians to under 100 total yards. Special teams also made an impact by blocking multiple punts. Coach Anderson credits the team's dedication and aims to continue progressing week by week.   …Back with final thoughts after   Break: -Art - Henssler 60 - JRM Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. My Business On Purpose
583: How To Sell A Small Business, And Your Business Is NOT You

My Business On Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2022 7:24

You are not your business.  I own The On Purpose Group, the entity that holds Business On Purpose, but that is not who I am. I heard a late-middle-aged woman recently say something that made me sad, “I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't own this business… this has been my identity for so long.” It is ironic that amount of time and focus that we spend trying to protect our digital identity (identification, credit cards, passwords, etc.) and yet spend very little time trying to maintain a distance between ourselves and the identity that is created from our work. You are not your work.  Today you can serve ice cream, tomorrow lead a class on pottery, and the next day lead a congressional hearing.  Of course acumen in any trade or profession is, in part, gained through right repetition over long periods of time.  So if you wish to have impact through your work, then it will likely require longevity and focus. Where we must be careful is when longevity and focus begin turning into obsession and idolatry along with a healthy dose of “what else would I do if I didn't do this.” Anything valuable thing taken to an extreme is at risk of becoming a liability. Hence the woman who has allowed her business to become her identity.  Her community might look at her and say, “Wow, what an impact”.  While her family and friends might look at the same person and think, “Wow, what a missed opportunity.” How do you ensure that you and your business remain two separate organisms working in tandem for the health of your surroundings and avoiding becoming one in the same? Build your business with an opened hand realizing that you not owning the business is always an option on the table. Although I own The On Purpose Group, I want to operate with a mindset that I manage the business as a General Manager or Steward who is always looking out for the best interest of all stakeholders, and to build the backend of the business in such a way that someone else could come in and manage if and when that time were to come. Recently, Gerrick Taylor, owner of Taylor's Landscape Supply and Nursery left his five location business for two weeks to go serve as an employee at similar business about five hours away.  He wanted to go see how a similar business is managed day to day. While Gerrick is gone Taylor's will continue to operate because it has been built in such a way where multiple team members can operate or steward the business in the owner's absence. Derrick is not Taylor's, Taylor's is an organism running, operating, and growing even while he is away because the team is empowered to grow the business. It is always better to have a sellable business, even if you choose not to sell. How do you build a sellable business that can run without you and free you from the prison of being tied to your business…whether you wish to sell or not? First, you must decide that you will not be synonymous with your business.  It is more of a mindset than a checklist of tasks to be accomplished.  Ask yourself right now, do people know me for anything other than my business?  If you have a hard time answering that, you must take action. What are the things that makes your sense light up?  What are the things you dream about doing if you didn't “have to work all of the time”?  Brennan Manning once asked, “what makes you cry?”   What is it?  What makes you tear up at the mere sight of a thing?  A child jumping into a father's arms?  A homeless woman on the street begging for money at the stoplight?  A legislative policy?  Ensuring that couples are well equipped before getting married? For some, we must begin radically separating your identity from your business.  Imagine this, we are all standing at your funeral, and on your headstone it reads, “He owned a great company”. Of course, that great company can do great things for people like providing great jobs, great products that serve needs, and the rest.  But I would dare say that your life is of more value than the jobs you created or the products you served.  Even without the company, you are important.  Wouldn't you rather have your headstone read, “He loved well”, or “His family was crazy about him”? Second, you must commit to building purpose and systems that build people that build the business.  One of the reasons that you are synonymous with your business is because most of the systems of the business are in your head.  What happens to the business if something happens to you?   That was the question TJ Anderson asked driving down a four-lane road in 2015.  TJ owns Atlantic Spray Foam and had that sobering thought when thinking about his future. He began radically committing to building systems, process, and purpose into his business.  He went from being the dominant business developer in his business, to rarely selling, servicing, or scheduling any jobs and instead investing in a team that invests in the customer. Finally, you need to surround yourself with third-party wisdom mentors who are not going to blindly cheerlead.  You need truth-tellers and advisors who can help you properly forecast what is coming, and thoughtfully plan how to equip yourself, the business, the people around you. A Jewish proverb tells us that “without counsel. plans fail, but with many advisors, they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22) I might go a step further and say, “without (objective) counsel plans fail, but with many (wise) advisors they succeed.” You are not your business.  Your business is a valuable asset, and you are of even greater value.

Oh, Mitch, it's an honor and a pleasure to be here. Thanks for having me. Absolutely. This is just fun, man. I know you've been healthy since the day we met. Has that always been a thing for you? I don't know that we've ever talked about childhood stuff. Did you grow up being healthy, or was this later in life kind of thing for you? Good question. Well, everyone's childhood is different, and I would say health is relative across the spectrum. I had a great childhood, but my personal, own desire and passion related to health improvement, health consciousness, et cetera, didn't really start until after college. That's when the fire ignited. After college, I realized how the unhealthy lifestyle I was living in college wasn't the best for me. I actually realized through my parents. My mom inspired me through creating my own meals. It really starts in the kitchen, how much nutrition impacts health. That was after college. Awesome. So some people have always just been geared toward healthy living. For others, it's a major event in their life. Maybe somebody else close to them started to have health issues, or themselves started to have health issues. Yours was a little bit more gradual but, man, it's become a major focal point for your life, for your own life, but also helping people all over. Definitely. The inspiration really came for health right when it came for entrepreneurship, so the passion for both took off at the same time. At times, I would notice my parents running their own business, and how that could add a lot of stress on to one's shoulders if they don't navigate it in the best way. It's not easy. There's no playbook about how to be a healthy high performer. I used to be the health guy that was just all into health and fitness and looking good and feeling good. Then, when I went down the rabbit hole of what's possible for using our health as an asset in our life, with how well we're able to think clearly and have the energy necessary to work and perform at the top of our game, I've really started, through the book and in all my work, it's really connecting the dots between how our decisions, our habits, our behaviors impact our performance, both in the present moment, but also for the further, for longevity. Absolutely. Well, that's funny, because I remember it. Just as you're saying that I remember you had invited me to be a part of one of your first entrepreneurial groups, right? You were trying to help a bunch of entrepreneurs get healthy and stay healthy. I'll just never forget. I remember one of the interactions. One of the guys was sort of confessing, “I did this to try to get six-pack abs, but the thing that I'm actually benefiting from is clarity.” He said, “Yeah, I'm losing some weight. I'm feeling better, but,” he's like, “I had no idea the positive effects on my clarity of thought, my reduced anxiety,

“We don’t lack the science, information, or technology to get healthy. We lack the art to know how to use those things properly.” This week’s Like a Bigfoot Podcast is with the author of the upcoming book “The Art of Health Hacking” TJ Anderson. TJ is an advocate for human optimization through continual learning, testing, and adapting your habits to chase your ideal physical, mental and emotional health. He’s also just a really positive, life-embracing, loving dude who just oozes positivity and I had a great time chatting with him. While some health-hacking authors focus on the nitty gritty details, TJ has embraced the idea the of differentiation- teaching a diverse group of people how to teach themselves to optimize healthy habits in a way that works for their own individual backgrounds, needs, and bodies. What has worked for him may or may not work for you….so his book acts as an overall blueprint of HOW to pursue YOUR experience by choosing to focus on behavior change and strategies you can use on your journey to better health. He shares strategies to help you explore new routines and guidelines how to turn the ones that create positive changes into lifelong habits. Once again, the book is “The Art of Health Hacking” and right now TJ is looking to crowdsource the publication at www.publishizer.com. You can purchase the book and support TJ by helping him find a publisher by visiting https://publishizer.com/the-art-of-health-hacking/.
