In this second pick for our Gothic Romance month, we discuss the stylish and evocative Guillermo Del Toro film Crimson Peak. This movie is Del Toro's homage to the great literature and film in the genre, including Hitchcock's Rebecca, Jane Eyre, The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Monk, and the work of Mario Bava. Del Toro also brings in some of his own obsessions like insects and ghosts to put his distinctive stamp on the genre, honoring its tropes in some ways and subverting them in others to bring a fresh, modern take to the well explored plot. We discuss the amazing and complex production design by Tom Sanders, the use of color in the film to suggest contrast between characters and settings, the importance of Kate Hawley's intricate costume design, and many other facets of this brilliant and enthralling film. Light a candle, throw on your fanciest nightgown, and explore the dark corners of Allerdale Hall with us!

What do Ernest Hemingway, lifestyle photography, and storytelling have to with senior living?! Join us for this unique episode, where we hear from Georgia-based photographer Tom Sanders. We cover: How photography is in Tom's blood — dating back to a famous photo his grandfather took of Ernest Hemingway How to help make someone feel comfortable in front of the camera Why images are a a powerful part of telling your community's story And take away the lesson that "we are going to get old, and when you can recognize that, you can live more in the now." _____________________________ Where to find us: Website: https://www.seniorlivingforesight.net LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/seniorforesight/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SeniorForesight Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seniorforesight/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/SeniorForesight Learn more about Tom: Website: https://tomsandersphoto.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tom_sanders_photography/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-sanders-b372b1139/
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Short Remark on the (subjective) mathematical 'naturalness' of the Nanda--Lieberum addition modulo 113 algorithm, published by Spencer Becker-Kahn on June 1, 2023 on LessWrong. These remarks are basically me just wanting to get my thoughts down after a Twitter exchange on this subject. I've not spent much time on this post and it's certainly plausible that I've gotten things wrong. In the 'Key Takeaways' section of the Modular Addition part of the well-known post 'A Mechanistic Interpretability Analysis of Grokking' , Nanda and Lieberum write: This algorithm operates via using trig identities and Discrete Fourier Transforms to map x,ycos(w(x+y)),sin(w(x+y)), and then extracting x+y(modp) And The model is trained to map x,y to z≡x+y(mod113) (henceforth 113 is referred to as p) But the casual reader should use caution! It is in fact the case that "Inputs x,y are given as one-hot encoded vectors in Rp ". This point is of course emphasized more in the full notebook (it has to be, that's where the code is), and the arXiv paper that followed is also much clearer about this point. However, when giving brief takeaways from the work, especially when it comes to discussing how 'natural' the learned algorithm is, I would go as far as saying that it is actually misleading to suggest that the network is literally given x and y as inputs. It is not trained to 'act' on the numbers x, y themselves. When thinking seriously about why the network is doing the particular thing that it is doing at the mechanistic level, I would want to emphasize that one-hotting is already a significant transformation. You have moved away from having the number x be represented by its own magnitude. You instead have a situation in which x and y now really live 'in the domain' (its almost like a dual point of view: The number x is not the size of the signal, but the position at which the input signal is non-zero). So, while I of course fully admit that I too am looking at it through my own subjective lens, one might say that (before the embedding happens) it is more mathematically natural to think that what the network is 'seeing' as input is something like the indicator functions t↦1x(t) and t↦1y(t). Here, t is something like the 'token variable' in the sense that these are functions on the vocabulary. And if we essentially ignore the additional tokens for | and =, we can think that these are functions on the group Z/pZ and that we would like the network to learn to produce the function t↦1x+y(t) at its output neurons. In particular, this point of view further (and perhaps almost completely) demystifies the use of the Fourier basis. Notice that the operation you want to learn is manifestly a convolution operation, i.e. And (as I distinctly remember being made to practically chant in an 'Analysis of Boolean Functions' class given by Tom Sanders) the Fourier Transform is the (essentially unique) change of basis that simultaneously diagonalizes all convolution operations. This is coming close to saying something like: There is one special basis that makes the operation you want to learn uniquely easy to do using matrix multiplications, and that basis is the Fourier basis. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

In this episode of Sports the NEMO Way we bring the Boston Celtics top 5 to the table for discussion.
My guest in this episode is Tom Sanders, the mastermind behind Senior Stock Photos, a stock photography company that provides stock photos of seniors over the age of 55. What I love most about Tom's work is that he creates authentic senior stock photos that truly celebrate aging – none of that run-of-the-mill stuff. Together, we uncover why stock photos from big box outfitters don't connect: the photographer must have a connection with their subject, and it is that connection that shines through when the target audience interacts with the photo in the senior living communities' marketing materials. No connection, no connection. Tom shares about photographing a 111-year-old woman who had been retired 40 years and written a dozen books in that timeframe. He shares tips and tricks to capturing terrific photos with your phone for use in social media marketing, and even how to make photography and videography a regular part of the activities schedule. One, two, three – SMILE! Find Tom's work here: seniorlivingvisuals.com/ seniorstockphotos.com/ tomsandersphoto.com

The two teams for the Saturday's North v South match at Sky Stadium in Wellington have been named and as expected it will see a battle between Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo'unga. The two All Blacks first five-eighths will face off while Beauden will also be up against his brother Jordie who has been named at fullback for the South. The North side features five Blues players in the pack including number eight Hoskins Sotutu who impressed early in the Super Rugby season. Former Hurricanes pairing Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara will link up with Aaron Smith named on the bench.Barrett's Blues teammate Rieko Ioane has been named at centre alongside Anton Lienert-Brown while the side features a dynamic back three of Caleb Clarke, Sevu Reece and Damian McKenzie. The South is dominated by Crusaders with Chiefs prop Nepo Laulala the odd one out in the tight five. The South side also have pace and skill in a back three of George Bridge, Will Jordan, Jordie Barrett with Jack Goodhue and Braydon Ennor in the centres. Brad Weber has been named at halfback inside of Mo'unga.North Head Coach John Plumtree said: "It's an exciting squad that we've picked for this special match. There's a huge amount of lot of talent in the side. There's some real power in the forwards and some speed in the backs."The North has gelled together really well this week and the players are having a lot of fun. They're really excited at the challenge against the South and certainly not lacking in any motivation. There will be a real intensity to the match with two really good teams going toe to toe," Plumtree added. The Head Coach of the South team, Brad Mooar, said the South side had some strong combinations, with additional strength and pace thrown in as well."It's always hard to pick those in the 23 and all 28 in our squad could've been selected. We have a fantastic group of men who have all made the most of this week, building relationships and having fun with each other as well as learning new things and formulating our game plan. There's been lots of good-natured banter between the teams and a lot of parochial rivalry.""The only thing missing at the stadium will be the fans and we're really disappointed we can't share the experience there with them. We know there will be a huge audience watching at home so we hope they'll enjoy what's shaping up as match for the history books," Mooar said. The teams are as follows:The North teamForwards: 1. Karl Tu'inukuafe 2. Asafo Aumua, 3. Ofa Tuungafasi, 4. Patrick Tuipulotu (captain), 5. Tupou Vaa'i, 6. Akira Ioane, 7. Ardie Savea, 8. Hoskins Sotutu.Backs: 9. TJ Perenara, 10. Beauden Barrett, 11. “I guess this song is a kind of ‘note to self’, a reminder to stop being such a glass half empty guy”: così il nostro caro Tom Sanders presenta la canzone che chiude la scaletta di questa puntata, e a ripensarci bene, in fondo, anche questo piccolo programma è tutto una lunga, fin troppo lunga […]
Topics Discussed and Key Points: The lackluster quality of most stock photos depicting seniors What it is like to work with 80+-year-old models, including those with cognitive disabilities Why Tom incorporates stories into his photos How senior living facilities can improve their marketing by showcasing quality photos Justifying the cost of quality photoshoots for marketing purposes Rebuilding trust in senior living communities post-COVID 19 through photography Episode Summary: In today's episode, Debbie speaks with Tom Sanders, a professor of photography at Savannah College of Art and Design and the founder of Senior Living Photography and Senior Stock Photos. He is the author of the coffee table books The Last Good War: The Faces and Voices of WWII (2010) and Vietnam War Portraits: The Faces and Voices (2020). Debbie considers Tom to be the best in the senior photography niche which, she laments, is severely lacking. She notes the oftentimes routine, inaccurate, and sometimes even silly representations of seniors in traditional stock photographs. One reason for this, addresses Tom, is that many senior living companies are unwilling to invest in high-quality photoshoots. Debbie also criticizes run of the mill photos as idealized images of prospects that lack relatability (i.e. models are often a decade or two younger than the usual senior living demographic). Tom, on the other hand, is unafraid to literally get up close and personal with the people he is trying to represent. Debbie points out that many of Tom's photos clearly display the wrinkles of his 80+-year-old models. They are posed simply, their humanity, personalities, and vulnerabilities all laid bare. Tom encourages more photography companies to take advantage of the stories that seniors have to share, so as to bring out the individuality of every single model. It is this level of care and openness that helped The Last Good War to earn the title of “Non-Fiction Book of the Year, Editor's Choice” by the Forewords Review Magazine. Companies should be willing to invest in better quality photos of their seniors the same way they are already used to spending on photos of their facility. After all, a marketer's job is to sell lifestyle, not real estate. Check out Tom's portfolio at https://seniorstockphotos.com/ and https://www.seniorlivingvisuals.com/

Experts have warned about the risks of vitamin B12 deficiency among vegans and recommended ways on how to get sufficient levels of the vitamin. A vegan diet is rich in fiber and low in cholesterol, but it lacks some nutrients like vitamin B12. This vitamin, which is responsible for keeping nerves and blood cells healthy, is naturally present in animal food products like meat, fish, and eggs. Despite scientific evidence linking a plant-based diet to B12 deficiency, some vegans dismiss the idea and consider it a myth. Some nutrition experts are alarmed by the matter. For one, University of Oxford professor Tim Key expressed that he is worried that some aspiring vegans lack knowledge on how to go on a plant-based diet properly. King's College London nutrition and dietetics professor Tom Sanders echoed this fear. He said that a number of people who adopt a vegan diet are unaware of the importance of getting B12. He warned that B12 deficiency caused by unbalanced diets should not be underestimated because it could lead to serious problems like anemia and nervous system damage. Professor Sanders suggests taking supplements or eating food fortified with B12 to help vegans get the required levels of the vitamin. He believes that vegan products, such as plant-based milk, should have higher vitamin B12 content. The Vegan Society, a UK-based organization, also posted ways to prevent B12 deficiency on its website. The group's recommendations include eating B12-fortified food two or three times a day. Alternatively, vegans could take at least 10 micrograms of B12 supplement daily or 2,000 micrograms of B12 supplement weekly.

A surprise selection in the Crusaders front row for their Super Rugby match with the Highlanders this weekend.George Bower replaces the injured Joe Moody at loosehead prop, with Harry Allen remaining on the bench.Crusaders coach Scott Robertson says Bower is a strong, versatile prop forward. There are eight changes to the Crusaders starting fifteen including a first appearance of the season for captain Sam Whitelock."Every team has to go in with confidence," says Whitelock. "They're a good pack and will be trying to build on the success they've had this year. They'll be excited by that. That's our challenge. We have to go down to their home patch."All Black Whitelock's return could hardly have come at a better time – especially with his Crusaders and national teammate Scott Barrett putting in such a busy start to the year.Barrett is due for a rest next week when the Crusaders play the Waratahs in Sydney, as is Richie Mo'unga."It's good in a couple of ways," Robertson said of Whitelock's return. "We've grown a couple of other leaders while he's been away and he's keen and energetic and as good a nick physically as he's been for a few years."When Skip first said he'd be away you think 'well, how are we going to deal with it' because he's been a big part of our success but he's been working behind the scenes and he comes back with great energy."Whitelock said his priority would be to get through as many minutes as he can, adding that he felt the toll of a busy year while with the All Blacks in November."I felt in a pretty good space but lacked a little bit of that last five or 10 per cent especially in those first couple of steps out of a breakdown or getting off the ground," he said. "If you take that away for a player that can be frustrating but it's in the past now and I'm pretty happy."Crusaders team to play Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday, kick-off 7.35pm is: 15 David Havili, 14 Braydon Ennor, 13 Jack Goodhue, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 George Bridge, 10 Richie Mo'unga, 9 Bryn Hall, 8 Whetu Douglas, 7 Matt Todd, 6 Jordan Taufua, 5 Sam Whitelock, 4 Scott Barrett, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 George Bower.Reserves: 16 Andrew Makalio, 17 Harry Allen, 18 Michael Alaalatoa, 19 Quentin Strange, 20 Tom Sanders 21 Ere Enari, 22 Brett Cameron, 23 Will Jordan.

LISTEN TO MARK PLUMMER TALK WITH MARTIN DEVLIN ABOVEThey came in their thousands to Eden Park, braved the heavy rain which began halfway through the first half, and were rewarded with an extra-time classic – Auckland winning their first national provincial title since 2007 at the end of an extraordinary 100-minute match. This Mitre 10 Cup premiership final, enjoyed to the fullest by a crowd of 20,130 who took advantage of the free entry, was in danger of being a procession as Canterbury had seemingly grabbed Auckland by the scruff of the neck in the first half. That Auckland turned it around was a credit to their resilience, composure and defence. Canterbury, targeting their 10th title win in 11 years, played their part too but they couldn't crack the blue and whites when it mattered and the emotional celebrations when the final whistle finally blew showed exactly what it meant to home side. The competition pace-setters had done it. Coach Alama Ieremia had warned his side that this would be easily their toughest match of the season and it certainly was that. The visitors had gone to a good lead thanks to a penalty try from a collapsed maul – which resulted in a yellow card for Akira Ioane - and a nicely-worked one for new All Black George Bridge who went in under the posts. It was apparently game over, the Canterbury machine doing what it does best. And yet, Auckland, who lost loosehead prop Sam Prattley to a head injury after five minutes, refused to yield. Ieremia talked during the week of bringing the respect back in terms of rugby in this city and here it was proof positive.Auckland coped superbly with Ioane's absence, scored a try through midfielder Tumua Manu in virtually their only attack of the first half and then completely turned the tables and a 20-7 halftime deficit in the second half - a superbly-converted Caleb Clarke try 10 minutes from regular time allowing them to draw level at 26-all.Ioane, a force of nature again at No8, and Faiane were the instigators but Auckland had heroes across the park as they completely changed the rhythm of the match, and, roared on by an increasingly vocal crowd, did the seemingly impossible.Tries for Ioane and Jordan Trainor put Auckland to within seven points before Clarke's try in the left corner and Harry Plummer's extraordinary conversion from the sideline.Watching from the sidelines was Plummer's father Mark, the team's physiotherapist. He told Martin Devlin that any dad wishes their kids well when they play."Every single kick that Harry takes, it's heart in the mouth sort of stuff. There's a bit of pride, a bit of fear, a bit of love and a bit of hope."Auckland should have nailed it in the final seconds as they piled on the pressure only to cough it up at the end and the match went into 20 minutes of extra time, with replacement prop Mike Soseni-Feagai's converted try cancelling out Tom Sanders' for Canterbury to lock the score at 33-all after the first 10 minutes. In the end it was a try for replacement halfback Leon Fukofuka, over for the seven-pointer with the game clock reading 93 minutes, which broke the deadlock, and Auckland hung on for a famous victory.Auckland 40 (Tumua Manu, Akira Ioane, Jordan Trainor, Caleb Clarke, Mike Soseni-Feagai, Leon Fukofuka tries; Harry Plummer 5 cons)Canterbury 33 (George Bridge, Tom Sanders, penalty try; Brett Cameron 4 pens, 2 cons)Halftime: Canterbury 20-7

Three-time HS State Championship coach, 25-year NCAA veteran and basketball luminary, Mike Jarvis. Mike Jarvis played on Rindge Technical High School’s 1962 Class A Championship (East Massachusetts) team. Today, he’s a member of the Cambridge High School, Massachusetts Coaches, New England Coaches Association and George Washington University Hall of Fame. However, Mike’s storied life in basketball almost didn’t happen. As a sophomore at Northeastern University, he quit the team – deciding to work for his father and brother’s fish-and-chip shop – before his brother convinced him to return to Northeastern and apologize to his coach, Dick Dukeshire. Given a second chance, it wasn’t long before Mike knew that his calling was as a basketball coach. We discuss Mike’s memories of working at Northeastern with future great, Jim Calhoun, followed by a move to Harvard, alongside eight-time NBA Champion of the Boston Celtics, Tom Sanders. Whilst working with Harvard’s varsity team, it wasn’t uncommon for one of Mike’s idols, the all-time great, Red Auerbach, to watch the team practice. In the mid-1970s, a Jamaican teenager moved to Massachusetts. His name? Patrick Ewing. Mike and Patrick didn’t know it at the time, however, soon enough their lives would be linked forever. A few year later, Mike was appointed head coach of his (high school) alma mater (Cambridge Rindge and Latin School – renamed from Rindge Technical, following a merger). In a stunning run of success, Ewing led Cambridge to three-consecutive state championships (1979-1981), amassing a remarkable 77-1 record during that span. Mike was named Massachusetts HS Coach of the Year in each of those three seasons. Our conversation continues, as we discuss the rest of Mike’s life in basketball. In 1985, he commenced what would be a 25-season run (between 1986 and 2014) as head coach at Division 1 NCAA schools; Boston University (1985-86 – 1989-90), George Washington (1990-91 – 1997-98), St. John’s (1998-99 – 2003-2004) and Florida Atlantic (2008-09 – 2013-14). Mike led three universities to the NCAA Tournament, making nine appearances in all. We talk about George Washington’s famed (1993) Sweet Sixteen match-up versus Michigan’s ‘Fab Five’ and the Red Storm’s (1999) journey to the Elite Eight. Mike shares a great story about the 1981 McDonald’s HS All-American Game, where his son, Mike Jarvis Jr., played a crucial role as his (young) assistant, plus, we cover Mike’s post-coaching life and so much more. This is a wide-ranging conversation that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. Links discussed (include): * Patrick Ewing – high-school sensation * George Washington versus The Fab Five (1993 – Sweet Sixteen) * St. John’s versus Ohio State (1999 – Elite Eight) People mentioned in this episode, include: Bill Russell, Adrian Branch, Michael Jordan, Bill Wennington, Chris Mullin, John Thompson, Yinka Dare, Rumeal Robinson, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard & Jalen Rose. Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: A lot of really interesting stuff in the news this week. First up the Grammy Nominees for Best Blues Album are in and they are: Remembering Little Walter Billy Boy Arnold, Charlie Musselwhite, Mark Hummel, Sugar Ray Norcia & James Harman Label: Blind Pig Records Cotton Mouth Man James Cotton Label: Alligator Get Up! Ben Harper With Charlie Musselwhite Label: Stax Seesaw Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa Label: J&R Adventures Down In Louisiana Bobby Rush Label: Deep Rush Records My guess is that it will go to James Cotton but I have heard the Charlie Musselwhite/ Ben Harper album and it’s great. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/12/grammy-nominees-for-best-blues-album/ The guitar that Bob Dylan plugged in when he famously went electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival sold at auction Friday for a record $965,000. Christie’s auction house did not immediately identify the absentee buyer of the sunburst Fender Stratocaster. The instrument went for the highest price ever paid for a guitar at auction, Christie’s said. The festival performance cemented Dylan’s move from acoustic folk to electric rock ‘n’ roll. Now viewed as a defining moment that irrevocably changed American music, the raucous, three-song electric set at the Rhode Island festival was met with boos from some in the crowd, and folk purists saw Dylan as a traitor and a sellout. The presale estimate by Christie’s for the guitar, which was sold with its original black leather strap and Fender hard shell case, was $300,000 to $500,000. The previous record for a guitar sold at auction was held by Eric Clapton’s Fender, nicknamed “Blackie,” which sold at Christie’s for $959,500 in 2004. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/12/bob-dylans-guitar-fetches-nearly-one-million-dollars-at-christies-auction/ The Kennedy Center’s annual gala this year honored Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel, Carlos Santana, Shirley Maclaine and opera star Martin Arroyo. There are lots of great performances or the show and is set to be aired on CBS on December 29th. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/kennedy-center-honors-santana-billy-joel-and-herbie-hancock-20131209 Larry Lisk – St. Petersburg, Florida Now in his 16th year hosting Mo Blues Monday on Tampa’s WMNF 88.5 FM, a 70,000-watt community radio station, Larry Lisk has made his show the definitive place for west-central Florida blues lovers to get their weekly fix of music, information, and commentary. On the show, Lisk emphasizes the diversity of the blues, from its roots to classic blues to current performers. Introducing new artists to his faithful audience is a show mainstay, along with the popular Blues Goodie Bag, which has put more than 1,200 CDs, tickets and other blues-related items in the hands of his listeners. When not on the air, Lisk is the emcee for area festivals such as the Tampa Bay, Clearwater, and Sarasota blues festivals, and can generally be found where blues music is playing. In addition, he was a co-founder of the Suncoast Blues Society and served as president from 1997 to 2005. Congrats Larry!! http://bluesmusicmagazine.com/blues-news-12-3-13/ The New Yorker had a tremendous article about the Wrecking Crew who were the session musicians that played on all of the great recordings of the 60’s to include: Crystals (“He’s a Rebel”), Jan and Dean (“Surf City”), Paul Revere and the Raiders (“Kicks”), Simon and Garfunkel (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”), the Association (“Windy”), the Mamas and the Papas (“California Dreamin’ ”), Frank Sinatra (“Strangers in the Night”), the Monkees (“Last Train to Clarksville”), Herb Alpert (“A Taste of Honey”), Nancy Sinatra (“These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ ”), or Sonny and Cher (“Bang Bang”)—not to mention the “Batman” theme, the “Mission: Impossible” theme, the “Hawaii Five-O” theme, or the “Born Free” theme—then you’ve heard the Wrecking Crew. When producers called musicians, these were the musicians who got called first. I put the link to the article in this week’s write up http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/2013/12/the-session-musicians-who-dominated-1960s-pop.html?mobify=0 Blues In The Area: 12/12 THURSDAY Johnny Winter / James Montgomery - Olde Mistick Village Arts Cinema (8:30pm) - Mystic, CT Popa Chubby - Theodores' (8pm) - Springfield, MA The Balkun Brothers - The Hungry Tiger (9pm) - Manchester, CT 12/13 FRIDAY Joe Louis Walker - The Iron Horse (7pm) - Northampton, MA Duke Robillard - Chan's (8 & 10pm) - Woonsocket, RI EasyBaby - La Boca - Middletown, CT The Mighty Soul Drivers - Smokin' Spokes (9pm) - Canton, CT Mike Law & the Playboys - Black-eyed Sally's (9pm) - Hartford Wildcat O'Halloran - Theodores' - Springfield, MA The Danny Draher Band - The Pulaski Club (8:30pm) - New Britain, CT Johnny & the East Coast Rockers - The Knickerbocker Cafe (8pm) - Westerly, RI Jr. Krauss & the Shakes / Trinity College Quirks - Bridge St. Live (8pm) - Collinsville, CT 12/14 SATURDAY Johnny Winter - Mill Street Brews - Southbridge, MA Savoy Brown - The Narrows Center for the Arts - Fall River, MA Jeff Pitchell - Black-eyed Sally's (9pm) - Hartford Albert Cummings - Chan's (8 & 10pm) - Woonsocket, RI The Tom Sanders Band - Donovan's Reef - Branford, CT Shaka & the Soulshakers - Sam the Clam's - Southington, CT Brandt Taylor - NY Pizza (7pm) - Plainfield, CT The Dave Keller Band - Theodores' - Springfield, MA 12/15 SUNDAY Memphis Bound Fundraiser - The Pine Loft (2pm) - Berlin, CT To help send CT Blues Society Solo/Duo Challenge winners to Memphis for the Blues Foundation's International Challenge with: Bill Shaka & Tony C.
