“This is all right at the beginning of fire season, and my symptoms really escalated from that point on. I started being paranoid, a startle response, it was crazy.  I thought I was going crazy.”  - Chief LindaThe mid-September Saturday in 2015 seemed harmless enough. It was forecasted to be cloudy with low winds and high humidity – a reprieve from a hectic, relentless fire season. Linda had been the duty chief for most of the major fires that had occurred, and she was looking forward to a few days off. But what came to be known as the Valley Fire – then the third-worst wildfire in California state history – had other plans. Join former firefighter/paramedic and host Phil Klein as he sits down with Linda, a retired chief and 32-year veteran of the fire service. Linda vividly recalls rushing to the fire and learning that the helitack crew – a group she knew well – was in the midst of a mayday situation after being cut off from their escape route. Left in command of the fire while the crew was being rescued, Linda was simultaneously forced to deal with the knowledge that her colleagues were in danger and the realization that the fire was quickly outgrowing the resources initially ordered to combat it. Linda shares how witnessing the crew's severe burns and injuries profoundly impacted her mental health and led to her diagnosis of PTSD. Now an author and performance coach, she strives to help others accept their PTSD diagnoses and work actively to recover. Chief Linda's book, Solving the Post Traumatic Stress Brain Injury Puzzle: A First Responder's GPS, can be purchased here. Thank you for listening! In midlife and beyond, we've hopefully learned that trying to be perfect is unattainable, and a bit ridiculous. This stressful way of being only creates a life of disillusionment , and cannot give you the ease and peace that accepting yourself just as you are does.In this episode, I talk about how after a lifetime of trying to control situations and striving to be as perfect as I could be, I am finally in a place of flow and joy, enjoying myself just as I am. We've reached midlife (or beyond), and know now that all those years we spent trying to be a certain size, trying to be a certain way to appease others, was just a waste to our peace of mind. If we can just love life and enjoy being who we truly are, others will see us in a brighter light as well.I spoke of a music video from Colbie Caillat called TRY: Here it the video LINKAlso my website romancetravelandfood.com:http://romancetravelandfood.com/I have a blog about writing my book, AFTER THE FIRE, where I have interviews and info on what was going on in our community in Lake County, during the four years it took me to write my romance novel about the 2015 Valley Fire:http://www.pattidienerwrites.com/And my book AFTER THE FIRE, is available here on this Amazon LINKThank you for tuning in and have a great day!Patti

When you grow up in a huge Greek family, there are no secrets, but there is a whole lot of fun.Join me, as I interview Dena Paskaly, a midlife business woman, who lives every day as if it were her last. She's a traveler, owns a successful, and busy gated senior living community, and is the most fun person I have come across. She has two beautiful grown daughters, and  she and her partner, Ari, have traveled the globe. Being Greek, Dena had a unique, if not fascinating upbringing, where having 32 first cousins made her life more like the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, than one could imagine. Their lives were always up for scrutiny by the rest of the large family, but you never wanted to cross any of them, for fear the rest of the Greeks would be after you. Only THEY could criticize their own family. I hope you enjoy this special interview where we had just a bit too much wine, laughed a whole lot, and talk about how the love of a good family can mold us into living our best lives. Kangaroo Valley Fire Storm explores a personal design and building project Nick undertook in the beautiful Kangaroo Valley just a few hours south of Sydney. Now to say he put his life on the line to save this house - is no where near an understatement. He and a few of his mates and some local refugees battled and took refuge from the mega Currowan Fire and Nick’s story of preparing for, fighting and surviving this fire is nothing short of astonishing. It really does talk to Nick’s character and his detailed & thorough approach to everything he does not to mention his courage and self belief in his own design ingenuity - it’s a fascinating story and I strongly encourage you to take the time to listen to the whole thing as Nick is a great storyteller and he really does keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Nicholas is the Principal and founder of Turner, one of Australia’s leading architectural practices employing around 100 permanent staff from 24 different countries. Within the practice, he leads the design of innovative mixed-use residential, public, workplace, industrial and hospitality projects that are both responsive and memorable, each with a strong identity that reflects a familial approach to repairing and enhancing the urban environment. Projects to date include locations as diverse as China, Indonesia, Nigeria, Iraq, Vietnam and Lebanon as well as locally in Sydney, Wolgan Valley, Melbourne, Tweed Heads, Bowral and a personal project of great significance in Kangaroo Valley - the design of which he literally bet his life on. Recently the practice has opened a new studio in London, offering direct access to opportunities within the UK and wider European markets. Nicholas is an accomplished speaker and presenter of ideas, providing clarity to the process of designing and delivering buildings, helping to steer a definitive course through the often-complex requirements of approvals and construction.
