It IS Possible To Manage Type 1 Diabetes Safely: Ep 121

LowCarbUSA Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2024 81:45

In this powerful episode of the LowCarbUSA podcast, Doug Reynolds and Pam Devine sit down with Beth McNally and Matt Miernik, the couple behind T1D Nutrition, to discuss their journey with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the transformative role of nutrition in managing the condition. Their journey began in 2015 when their son Lachlan was diagnosed with T1D at age 9. After months of frustration with conventional high-carb, insulin-heavy treatments, they adopted a very low-carb diet, which dramatically improved Lachlan's blood glucose stability and brought his A1C levels into the normal range. Now, at 18, Lachlan is a thriving athlete, and Beth and Matt are dedicated to sharing the benefits of therapeutic carbohydrate reduction with others facing similar challenges. A central theme of the conversation is the recently published Position Paper by The SMHP on therapeutic carbohydrate reduction for type 1 diabetes, to which Beth, Matt, and a team of experts have made significant contributions. This paper will revolutionize T1D management by advocating for therapeutic carbohydrate reduction as a viable, evidence-based option. It calls for healthcare providers to support patients choosing this approach and underscores the importance of continued research and education on low-carb nutritional strategies. Beth expresses her enthusiasm for the Position Paper, noting its potential to challenge current T1D care practices. With only about 17% of youth and 21% of adults meeting the American Diabetes Association's A1C target of 7.0, this paper could be a game-changer, providing clinicians with new guidelines and resources to enhance patient outcomes. It advocates for open access and support for those exploring low-carb diets as a therapeutic intervention, signaling a much-needed shift in mindset. Throughout the episode, Beth and Matt stress how this Position Paper will empower both patients and clinicians, offering a solid foundation for discussing low-carb options within healthcare teams and integrating evidence-backed guidelines into mainstream T1D care. They encourage families to share the Position Paper with their doctors, fostering more comprehensive and supportive care. The couple also reflects on their involvement in the January 2024 LowCarbUSA Boca Raton Symposium for Metabolic Health, which featured a dedicated Type 1 Day. This event assembled international experts in T1D management, including Dr. Ian Lake, Dr. Suzanne Schneider, Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Belinda Lennerz, and Dr. Robert Cywes, who shared innovative insights into how nutrition can stabilize blood glucose levels and improve the quality of life for those with T1D. These presentations set the stage for the Position Paper and underscored the need for a low-carb approach to gain wider recognition and support within the medical community. Matt offers additional insights into why therapeutic carbohydrate reduction is so effective, explaining how reducing carbohydrate intake decreases insulin dependency, leading to more stable blood glucose levels. He compares it to "removing logs from a fire," minimizing the blood glucose fluctuations that make T1D so difficult to manage. This Position Paper will address these scientific principles, equipping clinicians with the knowledge and tools to guide their patients more effectively. Matt also discusses the phenomenon of "double diabetes," a condition where individuals with type 1 diabetes develop insulin resistance, resembling type 2 diabetes. He explains how the conventional high-carb diet paired with large insulin doses can lead to this dangerous overlap, increasing health risks and complications. By adopting a low-carb approach, insulin needs are minimized, reducing the chances of developing double diabetes and supporting better metabolic health in people with T1D. Doug and Pam share how eye-opening the Type 1 Day event was for them and other attendees, with many healthcare professionals admitting they gained more insight into T1D management in one day than they had in their entire careers.  Click here to listen and discover the latest advancements in therapeutic carbohydrate reduction. Additionally, LowCarbUSA® has released all the Dedicated Type 1 Diabetes Workshop & Presenter videos from the recent LCUSA & SMHP Symposium for Metabolic Health, held in January. In this presentation, Dietician Vesanto Melina will answer many of your most pressing questions about protein from plants. How much protein do we need: as percent of calories? In grams per day? Can people get enough protein and all the essential amino acids without animal products? Why did we start thinking that protein from cheese and meat is better, and plant protein is inferior? Do vegans and vegetarians get enough protein? Is plant protein as good as animal protein? If we adopt a plant-based diet do we need to carefully combine beans and grains? Can top athletes compete successfully when their diets include no animal products? Does eating beans give us gas? If we are advised to eat 3 servings of legumes, must I eat 3 bowls of beans daily? How can I build in protein at each meal? What might be a typical day's menu that gives enough protein and is tasty? Also, If I am not an experienced cook, how can I get started? Are plant-exclusive diets suitable for every stage of the life cycle? Can seniors avoid sarcopenia while eating only plants? Can we build muscle with plant protein? Should we take protein supplements? Branched chain amino acids? Leucine? How can we keep our bones strong as we age? Why do some seniors lose muscle, and how can we prevent that as we age? Why is exercise important for seniors, and what types do we need? What's a good food guide for protein–rich plant-based eating? All of these questions, and more, can be answered in the book Plant Powered Protein. Are plant proteins really incomplete? Can your body actually tell the difference between amino acids from plants and amino acids from animals? If you are at all curious about whether you can get optimal protein on a plant-based diet - or if you've ever heard that plant protein is incomplete - this week's episode of The Allsorts Podcast is a must listen (or watch)! There is a strong trend on social media right now that is trying to position plant-based protein as somehow inferior to animal protein which is showing up in a number of formerly vegan influencers remarking that they felt much better when they started putting animal protein back in their meals. As a dietitian, I am thrilled when someone finds a way of eating that works for them. We are all unique and have to do what is right for us. But when someone implies that plant-based protein is somehow inferior…all I've got to say is, “where is your evidence for that?” So I'm talking with Vesanto Melina RD, author of the brand new (and heavily researched) book Plant-powered Protein with Brenda Davis RD and Cory Davis. Vesanto is an iconic vegan dietitian who has been driving the evidence-based discussion on plant-based diets since before I was born. She and Brenda are the reason why all of us plant-based dietitians walk a much gentler path. They are both professional heroes of mine so I am deeply honoured to welcome Vesanto to this, the 50th (!!!) episode of The Allsorts Podcast. About Vesanto Melina RD: Vesanto Melina, MS, Registered Dietitian is co-author of books that have won awards internationally and received a starred rating by the American Library Association as “the go-to books” on plant-based nutrition. Most recent are Plant-Powered Protein, Becoming Vegan (Comprehensive and Express Edition) and The Kick Diabetes Cookbook, (all with dietitian Brenda Davis RD). Their books are now in 10 languages. Vesanto has taught nutrition at Seattle's Bastyr University and at the University of British Columbia and has been a government consultant for 22 years. She is lead author of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics latest Position Paper on Vegetarian Diets and an internationally known speaker. On this episode we chat about: How a trip to India in the 1970s changed the way Vesanto thinks about food How going plant-based was controversial in the nutrition community in the 90s What protein is, and what it does in the body Is plant-based protein lower quality than animal protein? How much protein we need daily How to eat enough protein without counting things The historical context for associating protein with meat Common (fixable!) reasons you might not be feeling great plant-based How plant-based diets affect iron stores The connection between plant-based diets and longevity How protein needs change as we get older Support the Pod! Welcome to the Barbell Shrugged Podcast! In this episode, we dive into the NSCA's position paper on Olympic weightlifting for sport performance. Olympic weightlifting is a complex sport that requires a high level of skill, strength, power, and speed. It has become increasingly popular among athletes and coaches as a training tool to improve sport-specific performance. The NSCA's position paper provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific evidence on the benefits and risks of Olympic weightlifting for sport performance. The authors discuss the biomechanics of Olympic weightlifting, which involve the snatch and the clean and jerk, and emphasize the importance of proper form and coaching. The paper reviews the evidence on the benefits of Olympic weightlifting, including improvements in strength, power, speed, and jump performance. The authors also note that Olympic weightlifting can improve bone density, which is especially important for female athletes who are at higher risk of osteoporosis. However, the authors also discuss the potential risks of Olympic weightlifting, including the risk of injury. They note that injury rates in Olympic weightlifting are relatively low compared to other sports, but caution that proper form and technique are critical to minimizing the risk of injury. The paper provides guidelines for coaches and athletes on how to incorporate Olympic weightlifting into their training programs. The authors recommend starting with lighter weights and gradually increasing the load as athletes improve their skill and strength. They also recommend incorporating Olympic weightlifting into a comprehensive strength and conditioning program that includes other exercises such as plyometrics, agility drills, and resistance training. Overall, the NSCA's position paper on Olympic weightlifting for sport performance is a valuable resource for coaches and athletes looking to incorporate Olympic weightlifting into their training programs. By emphasizing the importance of proper technique and coaching, and providing guidelines for safe and effective training, the paper helps ensure that athletes can reap the benefits of Olympic weightlifting while minimizing the risk of injury. Audit in the UK is in transition, with major reform and increased regulation being planned by the Government and the Financial Reporting Council. This episode with ICEAW Manchester and Alliance MBS will give the business community the opportunity to feedback to the government and to comment on the proposed reforms. This episode will also look to highlight the areas where practising and business accountants and Directors can start to understand how to deal with the changes. There will be ample opportunity for the audience, both present and online, to question the panel and make constructive comments on the proposals. Background In July 2022, the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) published a Position Paper setting out the next steps to reform the UK's audit and corporate governance framework. The paper follows the Government Response to the consultation on strengthening the UK's Corporate Governance, Corporate Reporting and Audit systems, including the creation of the Audit, Reporting and Governance Authority (ARGA), to replace the FRC. The document builds on the areas of the Government Response that fall within the FRC's remit, providing advanced clarity for stakeholders on how the work of reform will be delivered ahead of government legislation. That work includes revising existing codes, strengthening auditing and accounting standards, setting expectations to drive behavioural change ahead of statutory powers, and the development of guidance to address issues set out in the Government Response. In particular, the Position Paper sets out proposed changes to the UK Corporate Governance Code. This will provide a stronger framework for reporting on the effectiveness of internal controls and Board responsibilities for expanded sustainability and ESG reporting, and new guidance on enhanced resilience statements and fraud reporting by directors. Speakers Lord Callanan, Under Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Corporate Responsibility Lord Callanan was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on 14 February 2020. He was Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union from 27 October 2017 to 31 January 2020. Callanan was a Conservative Councillor on Tyne and Wear County Council between 1983 and 1986 and Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council between 1987 and 1996, and a Member of the European Parliament for the North East England constituency from 1999, re-elected in 2004 and 2009. Callanan was created a Life Peer on 24 September 2014 taking the title Baron Callanan, of Low Fell in the County of Tyne and Wear. He was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department for Transport between June and October 2017. Julia Penny (President, ICAEW) Julia qualified as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant in 1989 having first completed an honours degree in Accountancy and Finance at Brighton Polytechnic. Soon after qualifying she moved into a training role, initially teaching students and later moving into CPD training and technical roles. Later she became chair of the ICAEW Technical Advisory Committee and a member of both the Technical Strategy and Financial Reporting Faculty Boards. Julia has been a Council member since 2013 and an ICAEW Board member since 2017. Julia was Vice-President for the year June 2020 to June 2021. This year, in recognition of DVAM or Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Engendered Collective hosted a series of community conversations to bring greater awareness to domestic abuse and gender-based violence.  This first conversation deals with how we can create systems change and build a culture of accountability.  Our guests included Elle Kamihira and Dr. Emma Katz. Elle Kamihira is survivor, activist, and a multi-disciplinary director who has spent the last twenty years collaborating on a variety of award-winning film, museum, documentary, and theater projects. Current projects include Jennifer 42, an animated documentary that takes a close look at the role of coercive control in the true story of the murder of Jennifer Magnano, and The Most Wicked Problem, a docu-series about femicide.  Dr. Emma Katz, a researcher based in England focused on coercive control of children.  Her most recent article When Coercive Control Continues to Harm Children: Post‐Separation Fathering, Stalking and Domestic Violence can be downloaded for free here . Her book Coercive Control in Children's and Mothers' Lives will be published by Oxford University Press in 2021. Follow Emma on Twitter at @DrEmmaKatz During our conversation, Elle, Emma, and I touched upon the following resources: Lisa Fischel-Wolovick's article, Battered Mothers and Children in the Courts: A Lawyer's View The difference between primary (stopping violence before it starts), secondary (preventing violence from escalating), and tertiary (minimizing negative impact of violence and trauma) prevention of domestic abuse Evan Stark's work on "coercive control" A discussion paper from the government of NWS on criminalizing coercive control and Women's Safety NSW's Position Paper on criminalizing coercive control Jane Gilmore's work on violence and the representation of women in the media Nazir Afzal's work on prosecuting gender-based crimes in Britain Britain' efforts to categorize sexist and misogynistic acts as hate crimes How Scotland's laws on coercive control have stricter sentencing than England The work of the CEDAR Network addressing mother-child victims of abuse "Perspecticide" as a manifestation of coercive control Using the "Housing First" model to address housing insecurity for victims of abuse --- Thanks for tuning in to the en(gender)ed podcast!
