Dizziness and falls seem to work hand in hand with the aging population and there are a lot of myths around dizziness. It's not just about vertigo, it goes deeper than that. The vestibular system functions to detect head motion and position relative to gravity and is primarily involved in the fine control of visual gaze, posture, orthostasis, spatial orientation, and navigation. In this podcast Gina and Don interview Dr. Lori Klees with Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Dr. Klees is an expert in Vestibular Rehabilitation and she is the director of Rehabilitation for the LMRMC.  Dr. Klees holds her Bachelor of Occupational Therapy from Towson University in Towson, MD. I see a lot of neurological cases that experience symptoms like dizziness, vertigo,  lightheadedness, inability to tolerate motion, flashing lights, sounds, etc. Many of these people are not local to my area, and they are all wondering "What else can I do to help myself get better?" so I am always looking for new ways to help them. While I focus primarily on looking deeper into underlying mechanisms, root causes, neurotoxins, pathogens, gut health, autoimmunity, etc, one thing that anyone who is experiencing these symptoms can do is VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION, so we have recommended VizStim kits to many of our clients. My guest on today's episode is Dr. Ashley Contreras, the creator and founder of VizStim. She is a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular issues and vestibular rehab, and throughout her 15-year career has developed this amazing kit of exercises to help people retrain their vestibular system. It's an inexpensive, easy-to-use, at-home kit with a wide variety of different exercises, journals, and levels of difficulty designed to walk through your progress as you are retraining your vestibular system. I've used it with my kids, it's super easy to use, easy to teach, and as long as you are willing to do the exercises and put in a few minutes of rehab each day, it is AWESOME. The vestibular system is a complex system in the brain that detects how your head and body are existing in relation to their surroundings - are your eyes level with gravity, are you moving, what position are you in, etc. When those signals get disrupted, from concussions, infections, neurotoxins, spinal subluxations and other injuries, etc, even the slightest miscue in signaling can make your body feel uneasy, unstable, nauseous, like the room is moving, or can fire to the amygdala and create a lot of anxiety or fear. When this system is disrupted, it can be retrained and rewired. I discuss the vestibular system quite a bit more in podcast number 47 (Brain Regions), and we discuss this much more in this podcast episode, so listen to the episode to learn more, and check out VizStim , and follow VizStim Recovery on social media for some great tips and tricks!

Functional medicine and psychoneuroimmunology is on the rise as a more integrative way of understanding the physiological roots of mental health concerns. For decades we've been obsessed with the theory that mental health concerns are solely about chemical imbalances in the brain - but that's not what the research has shown. The truth is much more complex since environmental, societal factors, childhood trauma, gut health, and so much more impact our brain health. In this episode, Dr. Randall Gates, a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist discusses the profound impact of childhood trauma on long-term disease, the intriguing connection between schizophrenia, psychosis, and gluten, and the significance of inflammation in the brain. We talk about why going gluten free isn't the only fix and why sometimes mental health issues are the primary if not, only, sign of an underlying autoimmune issue. We also delve into obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, and PANS/PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections), as well as Hashimoto's disease, the most common autoimmune disorder, often manifesting as brain fog and depression. Moreover, we delve into the potential synergy between functional medicine and psychiatry, and why our current system needs an integrated approach. We also discuss: how childhood trauma makes you more likely to develop an autoimmune condition links between schizophrenia, celiac and gluten sensitivity brain inflammation and the gut brain connection the role of diet and food allergies OCD, anxiety and PANS/PANDAS Hashimoto's disease what tests you may request from your doctor if you're struggling with mental health concerns how functional medicine can work with psychiatry For the past thirteen years, Dr. Randall Gates, D.C., Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, has dedicated his life to helping people discover the causes of their chronic health conditions. Shortly after graduating in 2006 with a B.S. in Biology, Dr. Gates started his doctoral program in Chiropractic. During Chiropractic school, he was introduced to Functional Neurology. When he learned about Functional Neurology, everything clicked! He became fascinated/obsessed with neurology and spent much of his free time studying the brain in-depth including its dysregulations and rehabilitation. In 2009, Dr. Gates graduated from Life Chiropractic College West receiving his Doctorate of Chiropractic, as well as being Valedictorian of his class. Simultaneously, he was completing 300 additional credit hours in the field of neurology, and in 2010, Dr. Gates passed the rigorous American Chiropractic Neurology Board Examination. At 28 years old, Dr. Gates attained his designation as a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist- one of five hundred in the world. Dr. Gates has since completed 250 hours of additional training in Traumatic Brain Injuries, Vestibular Rehabilitation and Movement Disorders. He continues to spend countless hours researching conditions that are not well understood, as well as conditions that are treated primarily through pharmacological medications. This week, Drs Danielle Tolman, PT and Abbie Ross, PT, NCS speak with Cathy Epley about her father's lasting legacy in the field of Vestibular Rehabilitation. Dr. John Epley, M.D. flipped the theory behind positional vertigo on it's head with the introduction of his particle theory. It took a lot of patience and perseverance to reach the level of acceptance that his theory has today. At this point in time, you can't mention the word "vertigo" without hearing the words "Epley maneuver" in the same sentence! We're discussing topics and beliefs associated with racial bias in pain management and physical therapy. It has been reported that medical students and residents hold false beliefs about the biological differences between blacks and whites. It demonstrates that these beliefs predict racial bias in pain perception and the management of effective pain care. My guest is physical therapist Michael Holder. Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology and a Minor in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Delaware. He went on to earn his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Misericordia University in 2013. He works in outpatient sports and orthopedics. He holds certifications in Vestibular Rehabilitation, Functional Nutrition for Chronic Pain, and Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. In this episode, we discuss how pain is treated differently in the African-American community, who are more likely to receive pain medication, blacks or whites, pain myths and false beliefs that are still alive to this day, hurt pain and sustain pain in African-American and other people of color, challenges to accessing physical therapy and other vital health services necessary for the adequate care of pain in minorities and African-Americans. Finally, issues related to minorities and people of color in the profession of physical therapy. Let's meet Michael Holder and discuss pain and racial bias. Dr. Carlo Rinaudo, DC Phd (cand)talks to Dr. Justin Trosclair DC on A Doctor's Perspective Podcast Vestibular, ocular, autonomic and dizziness issues, exam findings and rehab with Carlo Rinaudo DC PhD (cand). Managing spinal and MSK conditions with chiropractic and how vestibular rehab affects the nervous system, plus we talk about neuroConnect. I didn't know this but in Australia the term Dr is reserved for medical doctors and all others, even Phd's have to clarify behind their name what type of doctor you are. Also, you can't just say chiropractic can help headaches and low back pain without having research cited on your website to back up your claims. If you don't the regulatory board is quick to fine you and require changes.  We discuss some more of those type of nuisances today. He started out being fascinated by AK and soon realized that most techniques get results and it's because of neurology. Is it necessary, clinically, to become a diplomate in neurology (2 year program)? How much of this advanced neurology can actually be used in practice and how much can be used to build referrals from neurologists? Functional Neurology or Chiropractic Neurology are terms that in Australia will get your license revoked ‘in minutes' and drag you through the coals. Some chiropractic techniques are starting to incorporate neurology theories as to how they work but is it cherry picked research? Why would the chiropractic profession benefit from having the research conducted to be scrutinized by other non chiropractic Phd experts? Dr. Rinaudo is in the faculty of biomechanical engineering at a university that doesn't have to do with chiropractic. The brain and neuro is a window into seeing how the rest of the body is functioning. The vestibular and ocular system starts when we are so young and connects the autonomic nervous system, balance, cognitive and body awareness system which influences how our spine functions. PhD clinical trial on a new vestibular rehabilitation technique:  Gait, balance, proprioception, eye movement exercises. He is not advocating to abandon the adjustment nor is he saying all things can be remedied by the adjustment. Dr. Carlo runs though a mock patient exam with proper questions for vestibular, ocular, vertigo or dizziness symptoms and offers a few pointers for treatment and exercises. Especially this is relevant for whiplash injuries because the three little ear bones, otolith or otoconia, and the crystals can be injured causing dizziness and vertigo. Dysfunction of the neck changes the signaling and coding to the brain stem. It can alter our eye movement, higher cortical function, balance and more.   It's not a cookbook approach in his 4 module NeuroConnect program. Each case will present unique dysfunction and you will tailor a multitude of options for their individual needs. Many of the exercises will function on balance, eye function, proprioception training, inner ear and cerebellum. He goes through a synopsis of the 4 modules near the mid-end of the episode and I think it will get you excited to visit the website to learn more. For instance: why is that some patients seem to plateau, maybe we hit their metabolic capacity of their autonomic nervous system to heal until you get to a more root cause. How to explain all this neuro stuff so a patient can understand it. Family: If you go to seminars, take your family. Books: John Demartini   - role chiropractors play in dizziness and poor balance conditions   - the benefit of chiropractic on the brain?   - a brain based approach to managing spinal and MSK conditions   - are spinal dysfunctions the result of a local or brain-based problem Carlo Rinaudo of Sydney, Australia has a neurology diplomate via the Carrick Instutite back in 05-06 and is now a  PhD (cand) in Vestibular Rehabilitation (neuroscience) at UNSW and Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) in collaboration with
