Our theme for these next few weeks is “The Heart of God”. Throughout this series we will be highlighting a few of the missions we support here at Berea. Our family at Berea has a heart for missions. We have partnered with 17 different missions ranging from East Asia to right here in Brazil. It is incredible to see the ways that God is reaching people in need through these different ministries! But we long to be more than just a donor to these missions. We want to know them. We want to know their heart for God and the ways in which they are sharing the love of God with those they are reaching out to. We desire to have a relationship with every one of the missions we support. This week we will be sharing with you a ministry based in Terre Haute. You might have even seen their mobile unit right here in Brazil. It is the Crisis Pregnancy Center of the Wabash Valley. This ministry's mission to is support and encourage women and even the potential fathers who find themselves expecting a child and are uncertain what to do. This is a very important ministry that works every day to save the lives of the most vulnerable in our society and provide resources for expectant and new parents to provide for their child. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/escape-urself-podcast/support

In a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the Delphi murders case, defense attorneys representing Richard Allen have filed a motion for his transfer from the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. This request, articulated in a six-page document by attorneys Robert Scremin and William Lebrato, underscores the logistical challenges and potential impact on their ability to effectively represent Allen. Richard Allen, accused of the 2017 murders of Abby Williams and Libby German in Delphi, Indiana, has been in custody for over two years, during which his safekeeping has been a recurring concern. Initially held at the Westville Correctional Facility, Allen was transferred to Wabash Valley Correctional Facility on December 6, 2023. This move, however, has not alleviated the difficulties faced by his legal team. Scremin and Lebrato, who took over Allen's representation following the dismissal of attorneys Brad Rozzi and Andrew Baldwin, have expressed that the distance between their base in Fort Wayne and the Wabash Valley facility, located 233 miles away in Sullivan County, is excessively burdensome. They describe a visit to Allen on December 22, 2023, as a grueling 10-hour endeavor, involving a meeting in a makeshift visitation room that they likened to a prep-kitchen, with Allen confined to a cell within this space. The motion also revisits concerns previously raised about the conditions at Westville Correctional Facility, including the treatment of Allen, who was reportedly shackled and chained in a manner reminiscent of the fictional character Hannibal Lecter. Additionally, the attorneys highlighted the presence of Odinism within the facility, noting a guard with face tattoos symbolizing Odin's spear, among other related tattoos. Scremin, with 25 years of legal practice, emphasized the unprecedented nature of these visitation conditions, advocating for Allen's transfer to either the Allen County Jail or the Adams County Jail to facilitate more effective legal counsel. The decision on this motion rests with special judge Fran Gull, whose role in the case is itself a subject of deliberation. A hearing scheduled for January 18 by the Supreme Court will address not only Judge Gull's involvement but also the potential reinstatement of Allen's previous attorneys, Rozzi and Baldwin. The outcome of this hearing, set for 11 a.m., could significantly influence the course of this high-profile case Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hello outside world, my name is Christopher Trotter. Again, calling inside the belly of the beast at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. Carlisle, Indiana, to update you on the COVID-19 situation inside the belly of the beast. Today, the institution still has not done any mandatory testing of prisoners for COVID-19. They gave us [inaudible] packets for prisoner to take flu shots. Well they paid prisoners to take flu shots. And after these prisoners received these so-called flu shots, they all came sick. Over 50 prisoners tested positive for COVID-19. They isolated some of the prisoners a week after. Then they brought 'em back into the general population five or six days after they had allegedly tested positive for COVID-19. I had the privilege of talking to some of these prisoners, asking them about the conditions on the lockup unit. And they said they never received any of their property while they were over there. They would be at this cold [inaudible] while they were in there. And it made me wonder, is this a discourage tactic? Because if you report that you may be suffering from a fever or you may think that you have COVID, they will isolate you. And so therefore, now prisoners don't want to be isolated. Based on the conditions that they're held under in isolation. And so the prisoners that came back, that allegedly tested for COVID-19 I asked them. I said, did any of y'all get a copy of your test? They said no. And I asked 'em why not. And they didn't bother to ask so it makes me wonder, did they have a positive really or did they come back negative or what? I mean, you know, you don't have a copy of the test when the [inaudible] sent it in. Do we trust the administration enough to just take their word, that your results are positive or your results are negative. Do we take their word for it? Again, you would think with over 50 positive cases in one week after your so-called flu shot, that they would do mandatory testing. Or they would at least test prisoners of 65 and over that have chronical illness. That suffer from diabetes or high blood pressure. But they didn't even do that. But today we're still on lock-down. Which makes me think are we just going through the motions? You know, to make it clear that they're doing something because COVID-19 is on the rise throughout the country. It's on the rise in the state of Indiana. So well, we're gonna make it appear that we're following the guidelines. But nonetheless, here at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle, Indiana. They have not done any mandatory testing. When over 50- when over 50 positive cases came up. They never did any type of contact tracing. So it makes me wonder what are they up to? What are they doing? Do they care if prisoners catch COVID or not? Or do they care if the older population of prisoners catch COVID or not? It makes me wonder like, the older population, most of them don't work. And just like in society, the older population, most of them don't work. And if, you're no value to the workforce in society. If you're no value to the workforce in prison, and it costs us more to keep you or to take care of you in society. And it costs us more to take care of you in prison, then what's the solution? COVID-19. Is this a population control virus now, that has been released? Because nothing much has been done about it. But anyway, I would encourage people to—who have loved ones in prison—to get involved. To find out what's going on with your family members. Go to IDLC watch and see how you can participate. You know, they're talking about shutting down Miami County Correctional Facility in Indiana because of the COVID-19. They had the national guards there. I hope people are aware of that. They had the national guards at the Indiana State Reformatory. And I hope people are aware of that, as a result of COVID-19. And it's just a matter of time before they have the national guards here at Wabash Valley as a result of COVID-19. And people with loved ones should be concerned. Especially when you hear our president talk about this herd immunizations. Herd- we just want to make COVID-19 run rampant throughout the population. People would get immune and let it kill whoever it can kill. Which- when I hear something like that, I think about genocide (laughs). You know, I think about genocide. Even with the president's continent, "don't be afraid." He shouldn't be afraid cause he gets some of the best healthcare in the world. But does the average citizen get the same healthcare that the president gets? That's a reason to be afraid, if you don't get the same health care. Prisoners, do we get the same health care the president is- that the president get? That's a reason for us to be afraid. They're not going to pay for all the ventilation systems to put prisoners on ventilators. To get this, to get these treatments, these therapeutic treatments. They're not going to pay for that for no prisoner. So we should be afraid. We shouldn't have to live with it because people are dying from it. A prisoner died from it and they're yet to tell people why he died or how he died. I talked to another prisoner since he had the flu shot, that his hair is starting to fall out. I said oh, that's kind of familiar. I heard that people with COVID-19—one of the side effects is that your hair falls out. Again, there was this whole thing about the flu shots. Them paying prisoners to take the flu shot really [inaudible]. Really but they're interjecting me with some trial vaccine of COVID. Now, all of a sudden they have a survey. One- a one question survey. If a vaccine came available, would you take it? This is what they're asking prisoners. So if you say yes, that means that if they come up with something [inaudible] and say, well hey hey, this is a vaccine. They wouldn't tell you if it's a trial vaccine or not. You've already signed a little binder says you would take it. Whoever heard of a one question survey? If a vaccine came available, would you take it? This is what they're asking prisoners. After they [inaudible] pay them to take these flu shots. Which, under my opinion, it was a COVID vaccine trail shot. Because too many prisoners came sick after that. And-and the public needs to be aware of-prisoners could be ground zero for testing. It could be ground zero for testing. So, families need to be aware of that. And again, we're still on lock-down here at Wabash Valley. No telling when they might let up, but I encourage people to, again, go to IDLC watch. And see what you can do to get involved in understanding what's going on inside this- the prison system. My name is Christopher Trotter. I'm inside Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. And I pray that everyone stay safe. Thank you for your time. (Sound of a cell door closing.) These commentaries are recorded by Noelle Hanrahan of Prison Radio.

My name is Christopher Trotter, and I'm a political prisoner held inside the belly of the beast at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. I came into the prison system with a four-year sentence for theft. And with just three months to go, I was involved in a prison uprising. As a result of my participation- as a result of my participation in the prison up- riot, I received a multitude of charges ranging from attempted murder, criminal confinement, and rioting. All because I came to the defense of a prisoner that was being beaten savagely by racist prison guards while he was hand-cuffed and shackled. I went to trial, which was nothing more than a political lynching. And the jury was prevented for hearing the whole truth. Ultimately, I was found guilty and sentenced to 142 years. And no one was killed in the riot! My life was basically over. It was like they had given me a slow death sentence. Then I was placed in isolation. In a windowless cell. And I spent 20 years there because of my participation in the prison uprising. Because I had the courage to come to the aid of a fellow human being, because I had the courage to say, "Hey, well, this was wrong." And I had to make that choice. Sure, I had to choose between my freedom and helping someone. When you have people in power in charge that should have did the right thing, but they didn't. And since I've been inside the DLC, they've been very vindictive. I've experienced some of the most dehumanizing and demoralizing days of my life in solitary confinement. As a political prisoner, you're prosecuted for what you believe in, for what you stand up for. Even when it's right, there are still consequences and you have to pay the price. It makes you understand that absolute power really does corrupt. They feel that they can do whatever. And you can't say anything about it or do anything about it or you have no right to. But I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees. I was always raised to struggle for a cause and that’s because if you don't stand for something, you fall for anything. The political prisoners in prison have it the worst. On every level they're treated differently. We're isolated. We don't get the privileges that other prisoners get. They won't allow us to have the jobs that other prisoners have. We're constantly looked at as suspects, just like a Black man on the streets you're looked at as a suspect. Political prisoners in here are looked at as suspects. No matter what, you're a threat to them, because they fear that you have the ability to organize, to educate, to agitate the prison environment, and they don't want that. They want control over the environment. They want to be able to divide prisoners, by race, by gang orientation. But the political prisoner knows the difference. They know who the real enemy is. But they don't want you to fit in here and try to educate prisoners, to try to mentor prisoners and put them on the right path so they don't come back to prison. Because if you did that, they lose money. They want them to come back. So everyday I'm looked upon as this rebellious monster. Because I believe in something. I believe in justice. I believe in equality. I believe in freedom. I believe in doing what's right and standing up for what's right. No matter who it is, no matter if they're Black or white or Mexican or Asian. We all have the right to do our time, but they don't allow it. And every day I go to the- go to court, the court system even continues to prosecute me. I was just re-sentenced in 2019, from 142 years to 122 years. And the judge told me, he said they expect us to have their backs. They expect us to have their backs. That's what the judge said to me. But who is expected to have the prisoner's back when he's being beaten by racist prison guards. Who is to have that person's back? It's been a long road to freedom for me. I've been incarcerated now for 39 straight years. But I continue to hold my head high, I continue to educate prisoners. I continue to organize prisoners, and I continue to agitate where it needs to be agitated at. Just like with COVID-19. I let prisoners know, "Hey, wait a minute, make them test you. Make them test you, and ask for the test." They don't even give them a copy of the test. So how you know if you've been tested or not? How do you know if they even sending out the test? Well, for the political prisoners, they're putting them on lock ups and they're letting them die. They're not giving them all medical attention. Why waste money on giving these political prisoners medical attention, when COVID-19 is going to kill them anyway. So this is what’s happening here Wabash Valley. Prisoners with COVID-19—political prisoners—are suffering a slow death. Does anybody care? Does anybody care what's going on inside here? Prisoners' lives matter too. Again, we're strong but human. My name is Christopher Trotter, inside the belly of the beast at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. Thank you. (Sound of a cell door closing.) Interview This week Bursts spoke with Kevin Tucker, anarcho-primitivist, author and publisher of Black & Green Review. We had a rather lengthy conversation, so we've split the conversation up. This is the first portion, in which Kevin talks about anarcho-primitivism, domestication, civilization, anthropology and the scientific method, human development, agriculture and more. In the future episode you can hear his views about tribal-bro-ism in the white supremacist approach to historical misappropriation, upcoming issues of Black & Green Review, Collapse, Rewilding versus Revolution and more. For a free look at some of Kevin's writings, visit theanarchistlibrary.org, and to check out his publishing project, journals and books you can visit blackandgreenpress.org Other Audio Today's episode premiers October 1st, which is the date of the #CatalanReferendum for independence in that northern region within the bounds of Spain. In the leadup, the Spanish government has violently repressed the efforts to hold this election and the news we're seeing today is no different. If you'd like to hear a chat I had earlier this week with an English-speaking anarchist who has long resided in Catalunya about Catalan nationalism, autonomy, cultural differences between that region and central Spain, some history and some forecasts of where this referendum and repression may go (always critical of the State and Capital), check out our downloadable podcast. Also, keep an ear out for an upcoming series of podcast miniepisode ‘s featuring William Budington and Bursts chatting about digital security and safer practices with our devices. We've got a couple coming out about practices with Burner Phones and strengths and weaknesses of wrangling with the Signal app for end to end encrypted texts from Open Whisper Systems. Announcements Defend J20: Call in Day for US Attorney Liu This Monday October 2nd is the last day for a concerted call in effort to urge the US Attorney to drop the charges against the J20 defendants. Sign up at call.usattorneyliu.org to reserve your time slot. The fine folks there will send you an email with more details and a suggested call script. Her number is 202-252-7566, or if you cannot call in you can send a letter to the Judiciary Center Building, 555 Fourth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20530. October 19th Call for Solidarity There has been a formal call for solidarity from antifascists around the south to oppose an appearance by the by now internationally infamous white supremacist Batman villan Richard Spencer. It has been officially confirmed that this piece of white bread is going to be spewing pseudo intellectual and only marginally intelligible xenophobic racism at University of Florida in Gainesville on October 19th, which is in just over 2 and a half weeks from now. You can see the entire formal call for solidarity, plus some important context that includes recent history and what to be prepared for, at It's Going Down. You can get in touch if you want to endorse this call and are planning on being there in solidarity by emailing oct19endorse@riseup.net Support Herman Bell! “Black Panther Party political prisoner Herman Bell was viciously assaulted by guards at Great Meadow Correctional Facility (Comstock) on September 5, 2017. While being “escorted” by a guard back to his housing unit, a guard struck Herman, age 69, in the face causing his glasses to drop to the floor. He pushed Herman against the wall, Herman stumbled and fell to the ground. The guard then continued viciously hitting and kicking Herman. Very soon about 5 other guards arrived and joined in the violent attack, hitting and kicking Herman all over his body. Herman Bell has now been charged with “assault on staff.” Defying common sense, they allege that Herman, for no apparent reason, slapped the guard escorting him. He did this, they claim, in a location out of the view of all inmates but in the presence of other guards. He is now in the Special Housing Unit (box) at Five Points Correctional Facility where he was transferred after the incident. Herman Bell has not had a disciplinary violation in over 20 years. He had been scheduled to begin a three day family visit with his wife a few days after the incident, their first such visit in over 2 1/2 years. In addition he is to appear before the parole board, for the 8th time, in February 2018. At this time, we are encouraging everyone to take the time to write to Herman or send him a get-well card, so that the authorities know we are concerned for Herman. Further requests for actions of support will be posted soon. His new address is: Herman Bell 79 C 0262 Five Points CF 6600 State Route 96 Caller Box 119 Romulus, N.Y. 14541 Friends and family are also encouraging supporters to email Commissioner Anthony Annucci, to let him know that folks are keeping tabs on Mr. Bell's situation. Commissioner Annucci's email address is: Anthony.Annucci@doccs.ny.gov You can see a sample letter and a bunch more information at this article here: Political Prisoner Herman Bell Assaulted by Guards Comrade Malik Washington Comrade Malik, a tireless writer and organizer who's been very active in exposing unsafe conditions at the Eastham Unit in Texas, is facing retaliation from prison staff, and is asking supporters to email the Texas Ombudsman to prevent any further action being taken against him. You can find out more information at Action Needed to Fight Retaliation at the Eastham Unit! Support Shaka Shakur and Angaza Bahar At the Wabash Valley Correctional Institute in Indiana, Shaka Shakur, who is a political prisoner, defended himself against mistreatment by guards, and another, Angaza Iman Bahar (Jimmy Jones), who helped alert the outside world to the situation, are both facing disciplinary charges. Wabash Valley Correctional has been getting a reputation for “a culture of sadism [in which] guards take pride and find humor in their mistreatment of inmates, especially Black and New Afrikan inmates whom they expose to every kind of abuse and humiliation.” IDOC Watch are asking people to call in so the prison knows that they both have outside support. It is urgent that the security of Shaka Shakur and Angaza Bahar be ensured, but the only way is through mass pressure from the outside. IDOC Watch asks that people call Wabash Valley warden Richard Brown at 812-398-5050 and IDOC Commissioner Robert E. Carter Jr. at 317-232-5711. You can also email IDOC officials at rcarter@idoc.in.gov, rbrown@idoc.in.gov, mauxier@idoc.in.gov, jbasinger@idoc.in.gov, and lsalinas@idoc.in.gov You can see the entire call, which includes helpful context and analysis, and sample letters and emails at incarceratedworkers.org.
Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, Matt Miller, September Featured Teacher, Sept. 12, 2015. We are so excited to have Matt Miller on Classroom 2.0 LIVE as our Featured Teacher for the month of September! This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about some of the great ways Matt is effectively integrating technology into his HS Spanish classroom and the amazing advice and tips he shares about going paperless in his classroom. Matt is a high school Spanish teacher at Turkey Run High School in Marshall, Ind. His classes are very conversational and technology-laden, and he doesn't use textbooks (and hasn't since about 2009). He writes at the Ditch That Textbook blog (www.ditchthattextbook.com), usually about technology in the classroom, creative teaching and instruction with less reliance on the textbook. After trying to do the traditional “teach by the textbook” for a few years, he launched into a textbook-less path where learning activities were often custom-produced for his students as well as infused with technology. He likes the results a lot, and his students do, too. He’s a proud graduate of Indiana State University (go Sycamores!) and lives the dream — a wife, three kids, a mortgage and two dogs. He has taught high school since 2004, ranging from all levels of Spanish to etymology, English and yearbook. Before he became a teacher, he was a newspaper reporter and wrote for several Indiana daily newspapers, including the Indianapolis Star. Matt is a Google Certified Teacher and was awarded the Golden Apple Award by WTHI-TV in Terre Haute, Ind., for being one of five outstanding educators in the Wabash Valley in 2014. He was also nominated for a Bammy Award for Secondary School Teacher of the Year in 2014.
