This week on the I Do Wedding Marketing Podcast, I'm thrilled to bring you a deeply honest and much-needed conversation with Mark Caravaggio of Intune Events. We talk about pay-to-play models, vendor commissions, and the hidden costs of getting listed in publications or preferred partnerships. #105: Husband and Wife Team Built Popular Software for Wedding Planner Pros - Rob Farrow

Rob Farrow was an experienced marketing executive and his wife Christina Farrow was a successful professional wedding planner. They discovered there was no good software for wedding planner pros, so they decided to build software themselves. They invested their savings, built a loyal team, and started Aisle Planner to serve other wedding planner pros with a complete solution to power their businesses.  Aisle Planner grew slowly as they overcame huge obstacles, listened to their customers, and built world-class software that changed how events are managed. Aisle Planner is now the leading all-in-one software for wedding planners and event professionals with over 4000 customers.  After struggling through the COVID-19 shutdown several times, Rob and Christina decided to sell Aisle Planner to Fullsteam, a software holding company. They stayed for several years to meet their earn-out commitments and run the company with the same team.  Quote from Rob Farrow, co-founder of Aisle Planner ”There's a very fine line between arrogance and ignorance. And somewhere in there is where I was living in this. When we started, I was so sure we would succeed that I ignored obvious signs of failure. I just believed wholeheartedly. I believe in myself, I believe in my wife, and I believe in our team.  “If you have that belief, you can achieve things. And I know that sounds very cliche, but you have to have that belief. If you're doing it for the right reasons, you'll have that belief. If you're doing it to get rich quick, you won't. “There's a bunch of obstacles that you don't even know are coming our way. With that mindset of belief and just forging ahead, you're ready for any obstacle. They're not obstacles; they're just things you deal with.” The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. Subscribe to the Practical Founders Podcast using your favorite podcast app. Get the weekly Practical Founders newsletter and podcast updates at practicalfounders.com.

CRMs are a big part of any successful business. They help organize information, get contracts signed, collect payments, build a database of potential referrers, and streamline workflows. But I see too many wedding pros take CRMS to the extreme, especially when it comes to automation. What's easy and convenient for you, the business owner, often feels impersonal and generic to the couple. Even worse, you might create a “workspace” through your CRM that requires people to operate the way you want without considering it from their perspective.  Clearly, no one wants that kind of client experience - so how do you balance automation with personalization? That's why I brought Sara Kinkaid on the podcast today. She's VP of Operations at Aisle Planner, one of the most popular CRMs for wedding planners, and now any field in the wedding industry. I want to be super upfront about this episode. I do not get ANY money or commission or favors from Aisle Planner for bringing Sara on. In fact, I ran her through the ringer for 30 minutes before formally inviting her to the show. Why? I wanted to make sure their approaches aligned with what we recommend on the podcast, other content we share, and coaching advice I offer clients. Knowing that, I hope you enjoy the discussion and find a way to leverage the power of a CRM without sacrificing the all-important client experience.

Hey, folks! It's Kate here, welcoming you back to another episode of the Wedding Planning Collective Podcast. Today, I'm shaking things up a bit. Typically, I start my episodes with questions I frequently hear, but today, let's dive into a topic often overlooked in wedding planning: layouts or floor plans. Starting with the basics, I break down why having a well-thought-out wedding layout is crucial. It's not the most glamorous aspect of planning, but it can save you from chaos on your big day. We discuss the necessity of having both ceremony and reception layouts, debunking the myth that ceremony layouts are always unnecessary. Moving on, I delve into who typically handles these layouts and explore the pros and cons of venue assistance versus DIY. While venue coordinators can be a huge help, they often come with limitations on revisions and timing. We also touch on the practicalities of creating your own layout, including free tools like Aisle Planner, Social Tables, and All Seated. Understanding dimensions, guest flow, and space allocation are key components we delve into, ensuring your layout is both functional and elegant. Lastly, I provide a comprehensive list of elements to consider when crafting your layout, from seating arrangements to vendor stations, ensuring no detail is overlooked. And hey, I'd love to hear from you! Have you started your layout process yet? Head over to the Wedding Planning Collective Facebook Group and share your experience. If you found this episode valuable, please take a moment to rate and review. Your feedback helps us reach more couples navigating the wedding planning journey. Until next time, happy planning! It wasn't until she started a stationery business in 2004 that she discovered what many already knew at the time: The events industry was chockful of incredibly talented creatives, but few had the business experience to truly understand the strategy behind running a sustainable company. After spending a few years immersed in the industry, Michelle started a blog in 2009 aimed at educating fellow event professionals in the business of weddings. Be Sage Consulting quickly took off as it was one of the first B2B resources specifically tailored to creatives who wanted to become better entrepreneurs. Since then, her business has developed into a consultancy, and she now works one-on-one with event pros to adjust and redefine their business strategies. She went from pursuing acting to being a fierce leader in the wedding industry and a marvelous podcast host. Listen to today's Law Chat episode featuring Renee Dalo. Episode Introduction:  In today’s Law Chat episode, we are accompanied by Renee Dalo who shares with us her journey from being a broadway actress to being a wedding planner and now creating top-notch resources for other people in the industry through her e-courses and her podcast, Talk With Renée Dalo. Episode Summary:  Renee Dalo shares how she went from planning a friend’s wedding to doing it as a hobby and then turning it into a thriving business post her own wedding when she realized that she wasn’t going to let anyone else be in charge of her destiny.  Main Takeaways: Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy. You take your work home and work at the oddest hours of the day but you know that every minute you spent working is an investment towards your future and freedom. Sometimes all you need to do is to keep moving forward - your mindset will comply.  As entrepreneurs, a lot of times we’re in our own way. We need to be able to step out of our own path and let us proceed.  If you’re dealing with a scarcity mindset, you can help yourself by self-educating through books, courses, podcasts, and other resources. Be the person you are, not the person your industry wants you to be. You can only attract your dream clients by staying true to your vision. Renee’s tips to nurture your CEO mindset:  Admit to yourself that you need a team. You might be really good at what you do but you can’t do it all alone. Have a working knowledge of your team’s tasks before you outsource. You should be able to explain your vision to your team and that requires you to know what it includes. Renee uses tools such as Asana, Honeybook, Aisle Planner, Canva, Kajabi, Wordpress, ScreenFlow, Planoly, and Calendly for her business. It is statistically proven that when women acquire wealth, they end up giving back to the community far more than their male counterparts.  A lawyer isn’t someone you should be afraid of, instead they’re someone you want on your team to keep your business protected.   Fun Facts About Renee Dalo: Renee’s favorite book is Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston Her favorite TV series is Schitt's Creek   Find Renee Dalo: Website: https://www.reneedalo.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reneedalo/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-your-wedding-biz/id1383155622?mt=2 Get the visual experience, watch the videocast for the episode here: https://youtu.be/hsd2TXAOl7o   Connect With Girija: Website: https://www.gbplaw.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gbplaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GBPLaw/   Get Ready To Use Contact Templates At: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/

With a degree in accounting, it seemed like Michelle had her career laid out for her when she began working in the corporate world at companies like Deloitte and Coach. It wasn't until she started a stationery business in 2004 that she discovered what many already knew at the time: The events industry was chock full of incredibly talented creatives, but few had the business experience to truly understand the strategy behind running a sustainable company. After spending a few years immersed in the industry, Michelle started a blog in 2009 aimed at educating fellow event professionals in the business of weddings.   Sage Wedding Pros quickly took off as it was one of the first B2B resources specifically tailored to creatives who wanted to become better entrepreneurs. Since then, her business has developed into a consultancy and she now works one-on-one with event pros to adjust and redefine their business strategies.   Sage Wedding Pros also hosts an annual Be Sage Conference, which welcomes creative entrepreneurs from around the world for a weeklong mastermind on all things business. Michelle was named one of the Top 1000 Event Professionals by BizBash Magazine in 2019. Her thought leadership has carried over to her professional speaking circuit, where she has been asked to speak at numerous national conferences including The Special Event, WeddingWire World, NACE Experience, POSH Retreat, ABC, and BizBash Live, as well as local chapter meetings for WIPA and ILEA. She is also a regular contributor to Wedding Business Magazine and has been featured on Planners Lounge, WeddingIQ, Aisle Planner, and countless other industry publications.   You will hear all about Michelle's incredible career journey and she will also be sharing her expert advice on 'The Amazon Effect –  How to Shift Your Event Business to the Demands of Today's Consumer.' #204 Wedding Planning While Black, 2020

The Big Wedding Planning Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2020 68:30

Today, we are joined by Jaz, a Ugandan American bride, and her groom Rodney, a Haitian American, who are getting married in October. She reached out after episode 200 to open up a larger conversation about wedding planning while Black. Big Takeaways Suggestions from Jaz's email: 1) Highlighting a current black bride and her planning - not removed from the state of events but not only about that. Black women are disproportionately affected by covid, we are trying to stay positive and constructive during this enraging national uprising, and we still have to sift through wedding industry racism. I'd be willing to share my story with my fiancé on the show if you'd be open to that. 2) Please consider racial inclusion form this point forward. It still doesn't sit well that only two episodes touch upon race. And may seem small but some of your language is marginalizing. Talking to a stylist in one of your episodes about “skin color fabric” who's skin color? Is my skin not “normal”? Or giving advice on makeup and hair and ignoring the nuance and extra labor that black brides have to face to get the service we deserve. It's important and it ripples to brides and other industry professionals. Life after the uprisings, advice from Jaz: Approaching uninviting certain guests who aren't true allies. 1) Completely cut friends out of my life and reevaluating others; when I look out on my wedding day certain people would be a painful reminder that they don't fully see my humanity. 2) Considering breaking ties with vendors who aren't true allies (this is the hot topic in bridal communities right now for brides across cultures/race as they uncover guests who don't align with their values in light of everything going on.) 3) Reevaluating where I get my inspo (no longer supporting publications that ignore black brides) because it perpetuates the idea that our love doesn't matter. Advice from Jaz, in retrospect, and for current brides at the beginning of wedding planning: 1) Lean on your fiancé/fiancee! Rodney handled typical groom stuff like finding our band and handling his attire. But he also completely handled our website, guest list management, engagement shoot (in Morocco!), multi leg honeymoon planning, room-blocks/venue, budget management (Aisle Planner pro) and both our wedding bands! Pretty much anything that isn't planner related he's running it so I can focus on overall vision, design, and vendor management. If he hadn't been so hands on with all the things going on I don't even know where we'd be. 2) Marie Kondo it - we made a pact if something annoyed us, we ditched it. Guestbook, fancy invite designers (Minted baby), registry etc. My guests keep saying “I wish we ditched XYZ too it was such a headache”. New couples you can do that now! 3) For COVID brides (because this may drag on for the foreseeable future!), pay attention and support vendors that give couples some grace. My venue has been incredible and flexible and open to any solutions we put out there. On the other side, I had a potential makeup artist who was recommended left and right but wouldn't budge on a ridiculous client minimum of 10 different people getting services. For the foreseeable future, that's not going to be a thing. I don't think I have 10 guests total who would feel comfortable with getting a makeup service done this fall from a stranger. I personally think they're killing their own prospect conversion and it sends a terrible signal to couples that they aren't adjusting to the current state of affairs. 4) Shorter timeline brides (less than 9 months): you have to do your research and nail down a dream team much faster. I liked that because I loved checking things off but it can be a disaster if you don't know what you want yet or don't have clear budget or a planner helping. 5) Biggest learning from the short time window - try on and order a dress like yesterday if you want made to order (I'm sample size but so short that sample dresses weren't even an option)! 6) Have real, tough conversations - ask questions. If a vendor is not receptive or responsive - they're not the right vendor for you. Don't feel like you can't ‘ruffle feathers.' 7) You described to us how you felt almost forced to hire certain people and only after hiring them could really see where they stood. 8) Make vendors SHOW you not just give lip service. “If you're really representative, tell me about 5-6 black couples and vendors you've worked in the past few years”. 9) Tap into the resources: Black Brides, Munaluchi, B Collective, Junebug black vendor round ups and reach out to vendors you like and ask who they like working with. It took me way too long to realize that black/non-black ally vendors will warn you about venues and professionals who won't align with you. 10) Don't be afraid to travel your professionals if you can. I spent more mindshare trying to find perfect LA vendors than what travel fees would have cost me. Other cities may have way more options and traveling them in from more diverse industry pools could help you build a dream team (particularly the planner)

[...] fired first wedding planner who was giving us only 20% effort, navigating covid's affect on our wedding, moving cross country to LA, graduation, and now facing a reigniting racial uprising and constantly living with the pain and fear that every time my black fiancé goes out to Whole Foods he may not make it back home to me because of deep seated systematic societal hatred of our very existence.” - Jaz “I think in Covid, etiquette is out the window.” - Jaz Get In Touch EMAIL: thebigweddingplanningpodcast@gmail.com FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/TBWPpodcast/ (https://www.facebook.com/TBWPpodcast/) INSTAGRAM: @thebigweddingplanningpodcast (https://www.instagram.com/thebigweddingplanningpodcast/) BE SURE TO USE THE HASHTAG: #planthatwedding TWITTER: @TBWPpodcast PHONE: (415) 723-1625 Leave us a message and you might hear your voice on the show!
