A Brief History of Now”.

The subject of this month's commentary podcast blends post-punk with exotica, and tranquility with brutality. Yes, we're taking a look back at Feast, the first LP from Siouxsie & The Banshees side-project The Creatures. We're talking about the record's experimental song structures, its literary and cultural influences, and its handling of the themes and music adopted from Hawaii, where Siouxsie and Budgie wrote and recorded the record in early 1983.
TRACKLIST: 01 - Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities in Dust (12'' Eruption Mix) 02 - The Cult - (Here Comes The) Rain 03 - Echo & The Bunnymen - Lips Like Sugar (Maxi Mix) 04 - Gene Loves Jezebel - Desire (12" Remix) 05 - The Bolshoi - Please (12' Single Mix) 06 - The Sisters Of Mercy - Lucretia My Reflection (Extended Remix) 07 - The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink (Berlin Mix) 08 - The Lords Of The New Church - Dance With Me 09 - Peter Murphy - All Night Long (Single Edit) 10 - The Mission - Wasteland (Anniversary Mix) 11 - Iggy Pop - Cry For Love (Extended Dance Version) 12 - U2 - Two Hearts Beat as One (Club Version) 13 - The Cure - A Forest

In November of 1978, Siouxsie & The Banshees released their debut album. Recorded in one week and mixed in three, with lead singer Siouxie Sioux's dark and haunting lyrics and delivery, angular guitars, bass led rhythm, and machine like drumming that's heavy on the toms, the album is considered a watershed moment in the post-punk movement. Dirige Manuel Pinazo.

Much like Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground, Steve does not appreciate the recordings of The Doors and Neil Yong. But, that is not to say they did not write some decent songs. So, Steve compiled a playlist of covers of those two artists. Included are songs from the artists: Echo & the Bunnymen, Bettye Lavette, Johnny Cougar (Mellencamp), Saint Etienne, The Ramones, David Bowie, Merry Clayton, Simple Minds, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Bryan Ferry, Duran Duran, Rush, Sand Rubies and Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine. De The Ventures, Screaming Lord Stuch y a John Carpenter, The Raveonettes, Bauhaus, Screamin’ Hay Hawkins, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Horrors, Marilyn Manson o Bonet de San Pedro. The years 1978 & 1979 are significant in the Rock And Roll Timeline. The first wave of Punk Rock and Alternative were evolving and growing into so much more. Bands like The Talking Heads and Blondie were the Next Wave before The Next Wave was recognized, and alongside Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello and The Police, these bands brought the Next Wave to the mainstream without compromising their sound. We are taking a look at these two years and their significance to what was happening with the New Wave coming because of bands like The Jam, XTC, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, etc. Post Punk going strong because of bands like Gang Of Four, The X-Ray Spex, Generation X, The Stranglers and more. The growth of the Gothic branch with bands like The Damned, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure and Joy Division setting the course for what was ahead. The Second wave of Ska was gaining momentum with the creation of Two-Tone Records and the emergence of The Specials. And, the sound of Hardcore punk because of bands like The Germs were starting to take root in cities across the world. Bands like U2 were emerging from the ashes of punk and creating a fresh new sound. Patti Smith, Kraftwerk and Gary Numan helped facilitate change as well. There was so much happening in Rock And Roll at that time and we give a brief overview of many of the artists who contributed to the changing sounds of music during these two significant years. Thanks to our sponsors, Crooked Eye Brewery AND One CBD for their support of the podcast!!This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts

The Second British Invasion consisted of music acts from the United Kingdom that became popular in the United States during the early-to-mid 1980s primarily due to the cable music channel MTV. The term derives from the similar British Invasion of the U.S. in the 1960s. These acts primarily brought with them synthpop and new wave styles of music to the American charts, and according to Rolling Stone, brought "revolution in sound and style". In 2011, The Guardian named the Second British Invasion among their "50 key events in the history of pop music”. Bands Included: Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, The Police, Joe Jackson, XTC, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Squeeze, U2, Adam & The Ants, OMD, Duran Duran, Bow Wow Wow, Spandau Ballet, Billy Idol, The Cure, Killing Joke, Heaven 17, Gang of Four, Depeche Mode, Flock of Seagulls

Wherein I talk about my love of the legendary band Siouxsie & The Banshees and share stories of my love of their music.
Steve created this back-up episode a few weeks ago as the self-isolation was just kicking in, just-in-case we were unable to produce a joint show remotely. Steve plays songs from these artists: Bauhaus, The Wake (US), Fade To Black, The Damned, The Mission UK, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Sisters Of Mercy, Death Cult, The Sound, Joy Division.
There is no escaping this shared cultural experience of social distancing/self-isolation. So, we put together a show all about isolation, social distancing and self-quarantining. We play songs from these artists: Muse, The Vapors, 4 Out Of 5 Doctors, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, Siouxsie & The Banshees, T. Rex, Depeche Mode, The Police, Joy Division, Iggy Pop, Cake, Alexander Dust, Ivy. Originally aired March, 27, 2020

Vinyl junkies - I’m one of them. Possessing an opiate-like addiction for our preferred musical format, we tolerate, no we embrace it's inherent limitations and inconveniences. Pulling a treasure from our Ikea Expedit shelves (actually Kallax is the new thing), we cross apartment room floors that sag from the weight of our collections to put a record on the turntable. But first comes the romance of arcane cleaning and calibration rituals, the Holy Trinity of tracking weight, azimuth, and overhang, and then the battle with the Four Horsemen of the vinyl apocalypse: surface noise, orange peel, non-fill, and off center pressings. After 20, 22 minutes maximum of blissful immersion, the stylus bumps against the end groove, vup, vup, vup, and its time to get out of the chair, somnambulant, and flip over the record. Straight people observe this behavior and say, “umm, wouldn’t it be easier to just listen to this stuff for free on your phone?” So what does an archaic physical format and the weirdos who are obsessed with it have to do with fixing the music business? We’ve been told again and again that music has little or no value as a product, that access to it is easy and free, that the days of record stores and physical collections are a quaint notion of the past. And yet, at the most unlikely of times for a rebirth, these old things, these pieces of art, have stirred passion and a connectivity to music and the artists across age brackets. Why? Is it a hipster trend? Foolish nostalgia? Or does listening to vinyl awaken a musical mindfulness that downloads and streaming don’t deliver? My guest on the show today is Billy Fields of WEA Distribution - that’s Warner, Electra Atlantic in case you didn’t know. Billy is the “vinyl guy” at WEA and certainly qualifies as a record junkie. When I walked into his office at 50th and Broadway in NYC, he was spinning a Siouxsie & The Banshees record, and it was loud. And when his boss came in for a minute to chat, he didn’t turn it down, not even a little. Billy shares his thoughts on the business realities of vinyl, how labels choose what to release, the challenges facing record stores, and the tangible passions that music on wax inspires. So, welcome Billy Fields!
