Topics Mentioned: Changes in the function of hormones, cells, and genes Reduction of insulin resistance, lowering the risk for type 2 diabetes and helping to reverse it Reduces oxidative stress and inflammation in the body Promotes heart health by improving blood pressure, blood triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol Induces cellular repair throughout the entire body Promotes brain health by reducing oxidative stress and brain inflammation Prevents neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases Dr. Hsu gives us the backstory and knowledge we need to better understand the sacred mechanism of fasting.  Did you know that around 5-6am is when all the stress hormones surges? This is when the adrenal glands really begin to kick in. When reasonably applying fasting, there is major rejuvenation going on within the body.  As Dr. Hsu says: “If we were to reduce or take away the source of calories for a period of time, the body is in this crisis moment, so it taps inside and goes to the fats– the central fats– it asks itself: ‘what can I get rid of?' And when that fasting period passes, when the nutrients come, now the body can form new parts to rejuvenate new cells.” Fast. Re-eat. Fast. Re-eat. These are the cycles of fasting and the cells way of remaining youthful…longer! I think we all want that ;) Fun fact: Fasting affects every cell in the body– including brain cells!  After 5 days of prolonged fasting, people experience 4 levels of changes… Midsection weight loss (this fat is a source). Your body finds fasting as stress. So this is a stress that sharpens your mind & preserves your muscles.  You feel better! Clarity of the mind. Focused. You feel a sense of achievement. Your cells are rejuvenated  Dr. Hsu's pro tip? Repeat this 3x a year!  To be your healthiest yet, Dr. Hsu has provided a code! The popularity of fasting has surged in recent years, although there are myriad approaches to restricting food intake to promote good health.  One system, known as ProLon, involves mimicking the effects of fasting, by allowing small meals to be consumed during the diet.  LLAMA host Peter Bowes has followed the progress of this fasting mimicking diet (FMD) ever since he took part in a clinical trial, in 2013, to explore the regime's feasibility and safety.  In this interview Dr. William Hsu, Chief Medical Officer with L-Nutra, the company that markets the diet, explains the latest science behind periodic fasting nutrition and the differences between the various protocols that are often labeled 'intermittent fasting.'The Live Long and Master Aging podcast, a HealthSpan Media LLC production, shares ideas but does not offer medical advice.  If you have health concerns of any kind, or you are considering adopting a new diet or exercise regime, you should consult your doctor.Holistic Life NavigationLearn how to release stress and trauma with food, somatic techniques & holistic practices.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyAffiliation disclosure: DoNotAge.org is offering listeners to LLAMA a 10% discount on its range of products, including NAD boosters. Why do people fast: Religion. For mental clarity and cognitive benefits. Sense of calmness. Forms of Fasting: Intermittent fasting, Periodic fasting or cleanse. Resting helps every cell in the body. Your digestion is like you sleeping your gut. Fasting is so ingrained into the biology of every living organism. It is actually one of those miracles of life. Our bodies' ability to adapt to the absence of calories helped us survive.  Cellular stress-resistant mechanisms get activated through constant recycling, degradation of the least optimal parts during a fast and making new ones after the fast. Autophagy, or self-eating, is a fundamental process for every cell in the body which makes for the mechanism of recycling. Its the cleanup process that improves the health and efficiency of a cell. Fasting vs Low calorie diet: Low calorie diet does not trigger the fasting responses - just a mathematical manipulation of calories coming in and out. Fasting is a stress event that causes the cells to do that auto process and cell cleanup. Longevity Pathways: Difficult discipline of recycling leads to expansion of stronger cells. Fasting is really not about low calories but stress. When you're stressed, your stress hormone goes up fast but will maintain your muscle integrityand mass. What you're burning are the fats starting on your belly. Muscle strength is an important aspect of longevity. Fasting and Inflammation: The body is using the fasting period to recalibrate and lower the level of stimulation onto the immune system. The down-regulation lets your body sense nutrients that somehow changes it in a totally different trajectory. If you're not in the right health condition, prolonged water fasting could cause dehydration, low blood sugar and electrolyte imbalance. It's not a one size fits all.  Things to consider when going for prolonged water fasting: Overall health condition. Age. BMI. Go gradually. Fasting mimicking diet: If we're able to provide nutrients below the detection threshold of cells' nutrient sensors, you can technically provide nutrients while achieving fat-driven weight loss. Sparing the muscle weight loss, we're able to achieve the spiritual and the emotional benefits of fasting. He discusses the 3 types of fasting, the significance of our circadian cycles, and the importance of fasting in order to activate significant longevity mechanisms which help promote our overall well being. Hosts: Dr. Mark Young // Dr. Jeffrey Gladden Guest: Dr. William Hsu Highlights from the podcast: (0:55) Introduction (1:51) It's not because of what we know but about what we're asking and how we go about learning. (2:02) Dr. Gladden highlights The common underlying question seems to be, “Can I get back to where I was, health wise?” (4:00) Understanding the game that we're in. (8:25) In the practice of addressing all of these elements people are getting and feeling better overall more so than they have in the past. (9:10) Introducing Dr. William Hsu, Endocrinologist and graduate from Harvard (10:00) Dr. Hsu begins discussing “The Fasting Mimicking Diet” (12:40) Fasting has in large part been overlooked in the medical field. (15:30) Taking a look at Fat, the body's mechanism between feedings. (15:52) Fat is the largest organ in 70% of the American population. (17:05) What is normal? When do we eat (Has an impact on our health) and what do we eat (nutrient composition)? Circadian rhythm. (18:20) The body has an internal mechanism that tells us when to eat and when not to eat. (18:35) Illumination has changed our behaviour. (19:55) Obesity creates resistance to lupton secretary hormone that signals the body when to stop eating. (21:30) The science of Fasting began perhaps 20 or 25 years ago. (22:22) What are the molecular mechanisms that connect nutrition, fasting, and longevity? (22:50) Pulling back from nutrients actually triggers longevity genes and helps promote longer living. (23:15) Fasting actually creates an anti-fragile state. (24:00) Repeated cycle of Fasting and then eating. (24:45) Repeated cycles of fasting and feeding. (25:00) Autophagy — Self consumption. (28:06) What is the optimal hormetic stress? (28:41) Intermittent fasting. (31:21) Fasting for longer than 2 days is referred to as periodic fasting. (32:50) Autophagy does not begin until you have entered into the periodic fasting phase. (33:24) In the 5 day mimicking fast, Dr. Hsu, how did you select the types of foods involved in this fast? (33:55) Dr. Hsu, defines the 3 types of fasting, behavioral, ketogenic and molecular. (34:44) The Fasting Mimicking Diet or fast addresses the molecular or cellular fast. (35:10) Each cell has a receptor or ears and eyes that are referred to as “nutrient sensors.” (36:43) Being on and off the gas in order to activate longevity mechanisms. (37:28) Human physiology is all about cycling. (39:07) After that period of fasting, what should you do to regain those nutrients? (40:45) A low calorie diet will cause an individual to lose muscle mass. Fasting changes body, emotion, and behavior. (42:12) x1 a month for the first 3 months and then quarterly afterward (43:22) Would you want to fast when utilizing hormones? (44:40) The importance of cycling with growth hormone and recuperation. (47:45) A lot of people feel better when they are fasting. Mental clarity, more energy and more active. That being said, it will not be the time you get the most gains. (49:17) Fasting changes the hormone bdnf which helps promote mental clarity. (57:45) The game is to modulate hormetic stress (1:00:44) Dr. Hsu, what are the 3 most important takeaways for fasting? Life goals trump health goals, bring someone along on this journey, and start. But are you having a deep conversation about these specific numbers and what you're suppose to do with them? If you aren't then you SHOULD. Make sure to listen to find out why. All these "guidelines" that are thrown at us need to be broken down and properly interpreted depending on our health issues and not just diabetes alone.  Reducing medication and insulin shots is possible. Want fasting benefits but feel like you can't go days without eating? Same here!  I love that fasting uniquely stimulates a cell clean-out process called autophagy.  With my family history of dementia and type 2 diabetes, fasting is especially important for me.  However, the idea of going days without eating is just...off the table. See what I did there?  Fortunately, there is a way to cheat the fasting system.  The Prolon FMD is a 5-day meal kit that allows you to eat at least three times daily while still getting into ‘fasting mode'.  Everyone can benefit from a Prolon fast 2-4 times per year as a routine ‘clean-out' to support longevity and metabolic flexibility.  Then, for people who are working to improve metabolic health (i.e. improve weight, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, blood lipids), I recommend a 3-month starting protocol of one ProLon fast per month, then once quarterly ongoing.  In this episode, I interviewed Dr. William Hsu, endocrinologist and the Chief Medical Officer of L-Nutra, the creator of the Prolon FMD.  What I enjoyed the most was our discussion about how the outdated (yet common) approach of ‘eating small amounts often' is opposite of what our physiology needs and expects.  Also, fasting (or fasting mimicking) provides benefits not only during the fast but also BETWEEN fasts.  This happens because fasting helps to reset our metabolic flexibility (ability to switch between using carbohydrates or fat for energy).  In this episode, we discuss: - What happens when we fast (i.e. lower IGF-1 and higher growth hormone, autophagy) - Why fasting is an evolutionary adaptation - Who is best helped by fasting - Diet considerations between fasts - Fasting considerations for women - Exercise and fasting - How to incorporate Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) as a means of achieving fasting benefits while still eating Interested in trying out a 5-day Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet?  You can get one box OR a set at a first-time discount with free shipping PLUS 10% off AND a free set of free Fast Bars!  Use code ERIN25 at checkout: https://prolonfmd.com/  Check out the full episode at: https://erinskinner.com/empowerednutrition/fastingmimickingdiet Please review the Empowered Nutrition Podcast on Apple Podcasts!
