For nearly two months, the world has turned its attention to Israel and Hamas. The early winner of the war? You could make the case it's Vladimir Putin. That's because ever since the October 7th terror attacks, Russia's invasion of Ukraine seems to have fallen from the public eye. Which country has momentum? What subplots should we be following as winter nears? And why could Russian President Vladimir Putin be just as strong now as he was before attacking Ukraine? Saint Joseph University professors Dr. Melissa Chakars and Dr. Lisa Baglione analyze the latest developments in a high-stakes international conflict that has gotten pushed to the backburner. One of the most interesting Jesuit universities in the world is Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. Founded in 1875, Saint Joseph is the only Jesuit university in the Arab World. On its incredibly impressive list of alumni are seven presidents of Lebanon. The former Superior General of the Jesuits, Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach, earned his doctorate there and then joined the faculty. Saint Joseph has a medical and a law school and five total campuses in all in the capital city. In the middle of a religiously diverse country, it brings together 12,000 students from all backgrounds, including large communities of both Christian and Muslim students. As they carry out their essential mission, Saint Joseph is facing unimaginable challenges due to multiple intertwined crises plaguing the country of Lebanon right now. On August 4, 2020, a historically powerful explosion at the Port of Beirut killed over 200 people and left about 300,000 homeless. All five of Saint Joseph's campuses were damaged by the blast. This instability worsened an already-dire economic crisis. A few weeks ago, host Mike Jordan Laskey talked to the university's president, Fr. Salim Daccache, SJ, about the university and how it's responding to today's challenges. Fr. Daccache has led Saint Joseph's since 2012 and earned his undergraduate degree there in 1973. A scholar and an experienced administrator, Fr. Daccache has such a clear passion for the school and is dedicated to doing whatever he can to support students, faculty and staff. Against this backdrop, the university is asking for donations in support of scholarships. Our listeners in the United States can make tax-deductible donations via a PayPal link on our website, which you can find at Jesuits.org/Lebanon. We are joined again by Dr. Asher Brandt, Professor of Biochemistry at the Saint Joseph University, Connecticut, specializing in psychedelic pharmacology. We discuss a recently published paper about how Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, (SNPs, pronounced “snips”) might alter the pharmacological signaling of potentially therapeutic psychedelics.SNPs are the most common type of genetic variation among people. Specifically, it's a genomic variant at a single base position in the DNA, which can lead to a single point amino acid mutation in the subsequently synthesized protein. In the study, the authors examined whether sequence variations in the 5-HT2A receptor gene affect the signaling of some of the most used psychedelic drugs such as LSD, mescalin, psilocybin. They examined the in vitro pharmacology of seven non-synonymous SNPs, which give rise to a variant of 5-HT2A serotonin receptors. What they found is that these non-synonymous SNPs exert statistically significant effects on not just the the efficacy but also the potency of four therapeutically relevant psychedelics. What's mind blowing, in our opinion, is that the in vitro pharmacological effects of the SNP drug actions at 5-HT2A receptor are both amino acid and drug specific.References:Schmitz et al. Dr Joseph Antoun, physician and CEO of L-Nutra has a passion to bring fasting to the world and help humanity to live in a more healthy way and longer He talks with Angela about his research and how the fast mimicking diet means you can move to autophagy and protect your lean muscle Understand more about how to optimise fasting and longevity in this informative episode KEY TAKEAWAYS There are 2 categories of fasting – intermittent and periodic Autophagy begins for most people at around 48 hours and the most important aspect of fasting is stressing the body Stress elevates cortisol and with a focus on protein you can restructure muscle The duality of fasting means you are accessing your fat reserve and protecting lean muscle mass Fasting allows you to go beyond day 2 and Prolon's five-day regime effectively supports this A cellular fast means the cells are getting nutrients but not spiking insulin The body switches to keto and autophagy on days 2 and 3 and then on days 4 and 5 the feeling is euphoric and cells are being rejuvenated The mimicking fasting diet puts the body in a good metabolic state to optimise nutrition around your treatment Intermittent fasting can help to keep cancer cells in check in the early stages Cancer cells can't survive fasting mode because they need calories, they don't know how to stop replicating by design BEST MOMENTS ‘It's not sci-fi it's the speed of the crisis, the intensity of the crisis and how much reserves you have to compensate for it' ‘If you want to benefit from autophagy you have to give it time' ‘Prolon is short enough that people can do it but long enough to get people into autophagy' You should be aiming to under nourish cancer cells not feeding them to grow RESOURCES FOR THIS EPISODE https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjosephantoun https://mobile.twitter.com/drjosephantoun https://prolon.co.uk/ https://l-nutra.com/ VALUABLE RESOURCES High-Performance Health Podcast Series -https://angelafosterperformance.com/podcasts/ Biohack Your Way to Your Best Self - Join My Exclusive Female Biohacker Collective – angelafosteracademy.com/female-biohacker-collective-enrol Get a free health check and personalised report www.yourtotalhealthcheck.com Watch my Free Masterclass on how to master your metabolism -www.angelafosteracademy.com/master-your-metabolism Download my free Guide to Harmonising Your Hormones -www.angelafosterperformance.com/hormones Download my free Fasting Guide - www.angelafosterperformance.com/fasting/ Download my free Guide to Sleep Like a Boss -www.angelafosterperformance.com/sleep Join my free Facebook Community -www.facebook.com/groups/femalebiohacker Get my bestselling book Rethink Health - https://amzn.to/3vbzYOV ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Joseph Antoun always knew he wanted to help others through medicine, which is why he trained to be a physician. Despite its recent surge in popularity, fasting is a practice that dates back centuries and plays a central role in many cultures and religions. Many assume that fasting is a healthy activity. What are the secrets of a long healthy life? What can I do today to impact the length and quality of my life? Dr. Joseph Antoun joins us and sets the record straight on fasting. Dr. Antoun shares his vast expertise and breaks it down into simple ways for us to picture and understand how our body responds to fasting and the amazing benefits that fasting provides to the body. But who is Dr. Antoun? I mention in the show that Dr. Antoun has an impressive pedigree. Together they provide education and products to support a lifestyle that extends healthspan. Take a listen to this fascinating and enlightening conversation! **Some notes from my post-interview conversation with Dr. Antoun: I shared that fasting clearly has benefits because it is commanded by God in the Bible to the Israelites. Dr. Antoun responded that the word "fasting" is the only common word in all the world religions. I find that fascinating! To clarify, Dr. Antoun does not recommend water-only fasting. The beauty of the Fasting-Mimicking Diet is that one gains the benefits of fasting but is able to sustain the body by giving nutrients through food.
