Garland Vance is the Founder of Advanced Leadership and author of Gettin' (un)Busy: 5 Steps to Kill Busyness and Live with Purpose, Productivity, and Peace. Busyness is not a badge of honor. It is, however, steeped in good intentions as busyness is an overcommitment to good commitments. Garland emphasizes the need to uncommit and get unbusy through his 5 steps. He also shares a few practices of highly productive yet unbusy people in time blocking and working around the whole schedule according to 4 buckets: relationships, rest, reflection, and recreation. HIGHLIGHTS Commitment, not time management, is the solution to busyness Busyness is overcommitment the same way hoarding is over-collecting 5 steps to get unbusy: Decide, Deconstruct, Design, Develop, Draw others in 4 practices of unbusy people: Relationships, Rest, Reflection, and Recreation QUOTES Garland: "As technology progressed, our boundaries in life regressed. And so, it used to be in Herman Kahn's day, you had an office and at the end of the day, maybe you packed up your briefcase and had a couple of papers that you brought home. But you couldn't take your office with you. And we're at the point now where there are no borders at all." Garland: "Busyness is an overcommitment to too many good commitments. So nobody's busy because they're doing terrible things, unless you're a dictator or a drug dealer, something along those lines. Those people are busy for bad reasons, but for most of us, we're busy because of work, because of kids, because we have more projects to do around the home, we're busy because we're trying to reintegrate into life after COVID." Garland: "This is a self-inflicted injury. You're doing this to yourself and I couldn't see it. And that's when I realized, okay, that is what busyness is overcommitting whereas hoarding is over-collecting." Garland: "Purpose is all about knowing what your why is. Why am I on the planet? Simon Sinek emphasized this a lot. Why am I on the planet? What am I here to do? Why does my job exist? So know your why. Productivity is doing your why. So productivity isn't about activity. It's about accomplishment of what you actually do that moves you toward your purpose."  "And then peace is resting on your why. It's the willingness to say I can do anything I want but I can't do everything at once and I won't be able to do everything I want. So what are the few things that I'm going to commit to and then how do I say no to everything else?" Ever since Brynne's dad passed away last July, songs that talk about being alive, and coming alive, have been REALLY powerful for her. It's one thing to have air in your lungs, and a beating heart… it's another thing entirely to live a life where you FEEL alive. And spoiler alert… busyness does not mean we are alive. It does not mean we are fulfilled. Or joyful. “Why have we all assumed that busyness is a good thing? Because our good commitments build our busyness. Busyness is an overcommitment to do too many good commitments. When I was busy, my life was full of good commitments. Work, family, school, church, friendships - all of these were good. But when I added those good commitments together, they became too much. They became the opposite of good. They became bad… Too many good commitments add up to a bad life” (Getting Unbusy by Garland Vance). As we live everyday life, let's make sure we're filling our calendars with the things that ACTUALLY help us come alive. The things that bring us joy. Contentment. Fulfillment. Peace. Love. Abundance. Only YOU know what truly does that for you. Let's be more aware. Let's pay attention. Let's come alive. Listen to this episode, and we'll chat more about getting UNBUSY! “Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Busyness, not to be confused with business, is something we all face. It's also a problem that needs to be addressed. According to Dr. Garland Vance, author of Gettin' (un)Busy, many people feel overwhelmed from an overextended schedule. One solution is that we learn to say "NO" before taking on any new projects. Garland advises that what we need as individuals or leaders are clear boundaries between downtime and work, and saying yes and no. Is there a difference between activity and productivity? Both make you busy, but only one makes you fulfilled!.  Our guest on today's episode is Garland Vance, the co-founder of Advance Leadership, a firm that helps leaders accomplish more and stress less. Garland is also the author of Getting' (un)Busy, a book that takes you through the 5 steps to overcome "busyness" and live with purpose, productivity, and peace. The conversation is an insightful and active one, with Garland sharing how his own "busyness" caused him significant health problems. This sparked his initial research, hoping to discover ways that he (and others) could accomplish more while doing less. He discovered ways to identify and focus on important tasks, and how a positive "ripple effect" could elevate everything else. Garland's business mode, delivering content through coaching and keynote speaking, was upended over the last year by COVID-19. Like many others, he needed to retool his content to reach a virtual audience. Always an innovator, Garland doesn't simply talk for an hour and then disappear; he has found ways to make a 500-person Zoom call feel like a personal learning event, and he knows how to make each guest feel like the center of attention. Garland also talks about the fact that "busyness" doesn't qualify speed or skill. He assesses the 20 best practices of highly productive people, and why they aren't overwhelmed with "busyness" - because they practice habits that make real differences!  Combined with the 5 steps in his book, Gettin' (un)Busy, he shares insights and ways you, too, can deconstruct bad habits and design the life you want to live! Three Key Takeaways: Thought Leaders are easily overwhelmed with "busyness," which can affect  personal life and even health. Focus on the tasks that matter, and accept that you can't do everything all at once. Productivity and activity are not the same thing. Garland's thought leadership helps focus on productivity, and ways to fulfill life's greater purposes. Taking a Thought Leadership keynote into a virtual presentation requires additional work, and there are simple ways to make the experience personal and create genuine connection with your audience.

But as the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We talk about why Garland believes that busyness is not a good thing. Why it's killing you. Why it's robbing you of your quantity and quality of life. Garland shares a great example of why he believes that overcommitting yourself is like a form of hoarding. You'll want to check that out. Let’s face it. We’re all busy. We pack our calendars, pour ourselves into work, volunteering, and family affairs, and then crawl into bed drained at the end of a jam-packed day. This is our norm. But is busyness something we just have to accept? Is it even possible to become (un)busy and still be successful? These questions and more are answered in this episode of the Transform Your Workplace podcast. Dive into a discussion about busyness and get some tips about how to create some space in your calendar (and your mind) with Garland Vance. TAKEAWAYS   The problem: we not only think that being busy is a good thing, but we believe that when we're not busy, that something is intrinsically wrong with us. When we compare our true selves to our ideal selves, we conclude that we’re not good enough, so we need to do more which drives us into this non-stop culture of being busy, a feeling like we have to be productive all the time. Getting (un)busy starts with taking inventory of our commitments and deciding which of them can be removed from our calendar or delegated to someone else. If you’re leading a team, make “busy” a bad word in the workplace, and treat it as such. ABOUT THE GUEST Garland Vance is the author of Gettin' (un)Busy: 5 Steps to Kill Busyness and Live with Purpose, Productivity, and Peace. After years of destroying his body and mind with constant overcommitment and little self-care, Garland got a wake-up call and began to study the effects that busyness was having on his body and mind. A leadership consultant and coach, Garland Vance is passionate about helping others find peace and purpose in the workplace and every area of their lives. A QUICK GLIMPSE INTO OUR PODCAST

It's a rote response we've almost become programmed to utter. A general greeting &/or welfare check like "How's it going?" is met with the standard "Busy as always!" or some similar descriptor to let you know that you are in no way guilty of having a moment to relax.Meet Garland Vance, a guy who has his own story about the dangers of being "busy." We've convinced ourselves that busy-ness is equal to productivity and maybe even value. Surely the busier you are the more significant and important you must be, right? That's all great until the mule lays down. Keep throwing weight on its back and at some point that donkey refuses to move another step. This is more than a process of time management or establishing check-lists. This is a conscious act of overcoming our propensity to say "yes" when aske to absorb one more task. Give this a listen, get a free copy of Garland's best-selling book "Gettin Unbusy," and start making time in your life FOR life.

When I went to my doctor to find out what was happening, he told me that I was "stressed out" because I was so busy. I was working on my doctorate in leadership and started researching how busyness was affecting high capacity leaders and what could be done about it (for their sake and my own). That research resulted in a very practical book, Gettin’ (un)Busy: 5 Steps to Kill Busyness and Live with Purpose, Productivity, and Peace. In the book, I discuss how busyness and burnout are connected. I'd love to share with your audience the danger of one of the most common causes of burnout -- an over-commitment to too many good commitments -- and the simple steps they can take to beat busyness.Book: https://amzn.to/2MoZ2vI http://AdVanceLeadership.live http://gettinunbusybook.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/garlandvancepage LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/garland-vance Twitter: www.twitter.com/garlandvance Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCccPJdIqTSwzV_nDWy03AxA

It is such an appropriate thing to talk about here garlin I literally just just a little while before we got together to have a conversation here. My have a 21 year old son who's starting his senior year of college and he left the house here. Brad Miller 1:46 Not too long before we chatted, and the topic of our conversation was how busy he is. Busy his life is with he's getting ready to start classes and moved into a new place and As a part time job at the university, bookstore and social life and all kinds of other things that he's in. And he just felt he was talking about how overwhelmed that he felt in his life and how busy and he is common refrain. I think a lot of folks business, what's business to find it for us? carlon? What is that? Sure. So I defined business as an over commitment to too many good commitments. So let me unpack that just a little bit. All of us who are over committed, whether that's your son, whether that's a CEO or a stay at home parent, everybody I know who's over committed, they're over committed because they have so many good commitments, school is good church activities are good work is good, family is good. You know, everything we're doing is good. But when you put it all together, it becomes too much. It's kind of like when I was in middle school and I would go to an all you can eat by Garland Vance 3:00 Faye, and all of the food on the buffet was good, but by the end of the meal, I would feel sick because too many good things put together become bad and that's what business is. How's that impacted your life? My man? How is that? You said that impact you that...
