Improving diversity in the workforce is a work in progress for many industries, especially in the high-tech sector. Unfortunately, studies and statistics prove that the technology industry has a serious problem with workforce diversity, with vastly uneven employment rates for underrepresented members. This, along with unfair wage gaps for underrepresented individuals, can create damaging power and privilege imbalances in the workplace. So why is this such a significant issue for the tech sector, and what can be done to resolve it? On this episode of the Survive & Thrive podcast, join host Jennifer Ayres as she explains the importance of maintaining a diverse workforce, the positive impact of diversity in the workplace, and methods for improving diversity in the tech industry. With a talent for creating special events that blossomed while working for my dad's car stereo shop, I got my start in marketing at Frontier Field in Rochester and began serving as the executive director of the internationally known Lilac Festival. Later on, I headed the Canandaigua, New York Business Improvement District while also performing projects for the tourism promotion agency Visit Rochester. In 2009, I founded Break the Ice Media, with more than 20 years of experience in tourism marketing. I now host “Destination on the Left,” a highly successful tourism marketing podcast. As a business owner, I know what it takes to be successful. I founded BTI to help businesses tell their brand story through public relations, digital and traditional channels. I have the ability to uncover unique marketing opportunities and develop marketing and public relations initiatives that help clients build long-term success. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I discuss why I'm starting 2022 with a sense of reflection, renewal, and anticipation for what is ahead. Since 2020 I have been on a journey to understand the world in a broader sense, which has led to a search for greater meaning and a focus on intentionality in my actions. This week I want to share what I have done to understand differences, identify opportunities for personal growth, and take action to help make my world more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How the Break the Ice Media team explored the topic of what diversity, equity, and inclusion meant to them and defined the actions they could take to make a difference How Nicole became the Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the New York State Tourism Industry Association How the 2021 Travel Unity Summit helped the industry focus on the importance of increasing diversity The difference between equity and equality and why it is important How to take your own incremental action by taking the Travel Unity Individual Pledge, which is for all who believe the world of travel should be welcoming to people of all backgrounds and abilities What the Break the Ice Media team identified when they dug into their core value of equity and how they sought more diverse perspectives How rounding out the team led to an invitation for Break the Ice Media to pitch to Cayuga County and Auburn, New York, for their Harriet Tubman Equal Rights Heritage Campaign to commemorate the 200th Birthday of Harriet Tubman in 2022 Reflecting on Our Journey in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Over the last two years, my small company has been grappling with how we fit within the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion conversation, and we have really committed to educating ourselves around the topic. I was very candid in Solocast 16 about the team's journey to live out the ‘equitable' core value within our company, and we have recently reflected on our most recent client work to see how it is significantly impacting our collective worldview. When examining how we aligned with our values, we found that we needed to work on developing more diverse partner, freelance, and subcontractor relationships to ensure we represent a wide range of viewpoints. Being Intentional Big things will happen when you set your intentions and start to take action. You may feel as if you are taking baby steps at first, but time will pass, and you will realize that all those incremental moves have led to a monumental shift and change in your organization. I'm grateful that we took this journey and for the lessons we learned along the way, particularly the importance of humility and vulnerability when addressing biases and issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We added exits to bring the right people on board and that is where data and AI comes into play.(05:43) – We can't keep looking for people who have done the work. We have to look at the people who can do the work, and that is a fundamental shift in the mindset.(09:00) – We need to reach out to the people who may not have had all the privileges that we have and support them. We have to look at people beyond what we perceive for their face color, age.(10:14) – Machines have the ability to forget and ignore. We have our biases because of the lack of knowledge. Knowledge and moving out of biases can really help us solve this problem when hiring candidates.(11:59) – There has to be an audit process to ensure that your algorithms are not going crazy and that they are doing the right thing. Let's use them to help humans do a better job. (13:53) – It's all about humans. These systems are designed to come in and replace humans. In that case, not only are you taking the snitch system correctly, you're teasing that: I really don't need to worry about humans, and that has to be front and center.(16:00) – One of the things Eightfold believes is that it's not that people are good or bad, or one is better or worse, but who is the best fit for which flow in that company.(18:24) – You have to really assess the people at their full potential.(22:32) – What Eightfold.ai is trying to do through machines is help hiring managers understand that candidates past, be able to dig deeper with you, look at the peer group of the community to see what their peer group is doing today.(25:27) – Some of the success stories of the companies that we know today in the world come from combining experience with young talent. (27:26) – The talent market rate landscape is completely going to go through a massive shift in next 18 months. This is also a good time to hire great talent, because many people are looking up.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine shined a light on an issue that has challenged the pharmaceutical industry for years. Underrepresented minority communities are often disproportionately impacted by diseases, yet those groups are usually underrepresented in the clinical trials that are designed to assess the effectiveness of drugs that they need. As one of the world's largest biotechnology companies, Genentech is tapping advanced mobile technology to help increase the diversity of trial participants and improve the experience. In this episode of Digital Conversations, Nik Kolatkar, VP of Evidence Generation, US Medical Affairs at Genentech, joined Greg Kefer for a discussion about clinical trial innovation. Genentech runs a portfolio of 500 trials around the world and is using advanced technology to drive trust, education, and convenience for participants. Through smart, language-based interactions, digital navigators eliminate the need for participants to report to ivory tower academic centers and instead, provide the capabilities for anyone to be part of bringing advanced science to their communities, regardless of location, race, gender, income, or age.

What is diversity? What does a toxic culture look like in practice? What are the main issues or challenges that our sector needs to tackle? In episode eleven of ‘OzCyber Unlocked', AustCyber's CEO Michelle Price speaks to Jacqui Loustau (Founder of the Australian Women in Security Network), Jinan Budge (Principal Analyst at Forrester), Tony Vizza (Director of Cyber Security Advocacy for the Asia-Pacific Region at (ISC)²), Jacqueline Kernot (Cyber Security Partner at EY) and Laura Lees (Sydney Co-Chapter Lead at AWSN and Vice President of the ISACA Sydney Chapter) about what can be done to address a toxic culture for individuals, leaders and organisations. This month, our ‘cyber spotlight' features Louisa Partridge and Louisa Vogelenzang who co-founded Women Speak Cyber – a social enterprise that equips Australian women with the essential public speaking training and skills they need to present at cyber security conferences. To register for the upcoming ‘Cyber shift' event (held on 21 July) mentioned during the podcast, visit https://bit.ly/3gcEe9j. Note: This podcast episode deals with serious and potentially distressing and triggering topics. If you feel at any time, you need support, please contact your local crisis centre or visit https://bit.ly/3imBWaz.This episode, as part of our commitment to enacting change, our speakers share tangible actions to help strengthen culture and diversity:If you see someone finding it difficult to express their ideas or to be heard in meetings, help support by amplifying their message and offer to mentor. If good people are leaving your team, talk to them to learn what you can do to improve and do something about it!Take a chance and hire two people at the same time who have different backgrounds and show good aptitude and attitude.Ask – when I look at my team, does their diversity reflect the world outside and the clients or business partners we engage with, or do they look like me? Put in place meaningful and tangible programs around diversity, equity and inclusion that provide a measurable benefit to women in your organisation. As part of this, get men on board! Sadly, some men do feel threatened by DEI programs and in fact, some have even blamed these programs for why they themselves may have missed out on a promotion. It is critical to disarm this continuing myth that DEI programs will harm their careers. While capability is important, character and attitude is everything. Create a culture of success and a constructive can-do attitude. Reward hard work and displays of great attitudes with the recognition that people deserve. Instill an attitude that anyone in the organisation can be a leader. If they see poor conduct, call it out the right way and help the individual be a better person.Acknowledge, name and deal with toxicity. Hoping that things will ‘fix themselves' isn't on – hope isn't a strategy. Be prepared to make the tough calls. Empathy is your antidote to toxicity – as the old adage says, ‘People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.' If you're a leader, your team needs to know that they're supported emotionally. That will require you to listen, walk the floor, and validate and recognise their contributions.Correct culture problems before they metastasize – weed out the misunderstood geniuses in the interview process, coach empathy, and encourage and role model positive behaviour.

Got something a bit different for the main topic today. I had the opportunity to test Garmin’s newest truck GPS called the dēzl™ OTR1000, and I’ll share my thoughts in a video review. But first, lots of news to discuss including truck recalls, winter driving prep, and COVID vaccines, waivers, and how it relates to workman’s comp. Autonomous and electric vehicles are always a hot topic, including how electric trucks might attract new truck drivers to the industry. We’ve got an update on the closed bridge in Cincinnati, we’ll learn about fancy pants smart trailers, a request to be the new head of the FMCSA, and a DOT physical exemption for one large company. HUH? We’ve got a non-traditional Trucker Grub segment this time and we’ll hear about Stevie driving for a carnival and musical guest, Driver Dave will give us his origin story. When this wariness goes unchallenged, it can turn into unhelpful bias. Sometimes this bias can be deadly, as shown by the rates of incarceration and death in custody of aboriginal people. H@H: Ep 32 - Binundu Isaiah Samuel ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/binundu/ ) joins host, Paulina Lee ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulinalee/ ) on this week’s episode of Here@Haas. Binundu Isaiah is president of the Executive MBA Class of 2020 and a leader was with a passion for building communities. Originally from Nigeria, Isaiah shares his journey across the US and the world on his way to Haas. On the Importance of Community: “So allyship, friendship, the community is something that's incredibly important to me; and it's something that I carry. So not just being able to build it for me, but being able to create that space for others, to be able to feel that community, to be able to belong, to be able to thrive, to be able to pour into other people the way that you've been poured into in the past.” On the Opportunity to Improve Diversity in the Student Body: “It's something that I'm hoping can be improved in the future. Because I do believe that when we talk about equity and inclusion and access, we have to be able to create spaces for folks to have a seat at the table and being at institutions like Haas, is definitely a way that people can participate more in and have seats at the table.” On the Importance of the Equity Matters ( https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13886147/ ) community: “The hope of this community is then for everybody that joins to be able to go back into their sphere influence and no matter how small the ripple effect is, just make that change that they want to see in the world. We believe that through community and conversation, anything is possible.” And finally, advice for prospective students: “The work that you're putting into getting your MBA, even if you've not been accepted yet, it matters. So just trust in what you're doing your preparation. And when you do get in, you deserve to be here. Come in ready to just enjoy the journey you're going to grow. So, so, so much. And just come in with confidence and come in with a heart for others and you'll be fine.” *Resources* : * Join the community today - Equity Matters: Real Conversations. Real Leaders. Deidre Wright is the CEO of Strategic Stories, a Diversity and Inclusion Award Winner, and a board advisor for Juniper Labs. Deidre is passionate about incorporating more diversity into organizations, especially the insurance industry. The good news is, the industry is perfectly ready for it because they've already adapted a risk management mindset. Deidre shares her thoughts on what the insurance industry can be doing to adapt to the times and bring in a new set of talent into their retirement-eligible workforce on this week's episode. Key Takeaways Deidre shares a bit of her background and how she first got into risk management. Deidre kept wondering why she was the only minority in the room. The biggest challenge companies are facing is that they can't find minorities with the right skill sets. Deidre shares her thoughts on this. What improvements can companies be making to improve their diversity? What are we doing as an industry to meet the needs of diverse customers? We already have a risk management mindset, which means the insurance industry already has the best potential to make a difference. The numbers and math are already there. The insurance industry has a massive talent gap approaching, with a high percentage of professionals being eligible to retire right now. What would Deidre like to see included in outreach efforts to attract more diverse talent? If you want to retain the talent you have, appreciate them and make real efforts to show you care about them. How do you make insurance more attractive to new talent? Customers just want things to be easy and they want to trust you. The world will never be the same due to this pandemic. Deidre believes we will see better employee engagement. What does Deidre wish she had known before getting started? Use your voice. Keep Getting Better Deidrewright.com Deidre on LinkedIn Nationaldiversityconference.com Quotes “We know things have to change. Are we going to be proactive about this or are we going to risk our companies being dinosaurs?” “Companies understand that investing in diversity and inclusion equity is important. The challenge is for others to be motivated to proactively change the system.” “Don't think of diversity as more work, think of it as more opportunity to grow your business, grow our industry, and get top talent to solve these problems.”

(**Originally published on June 5th, 2019**) About Greater Than Code (GTC): For a long time, tech culture has focused too narrowly on technical skills; this has resulted in a tech community that too often puts companies and code over people. Greater Than Code is a podcast that invites the voices of people who are not heard from enough in tech: women, people of color, trans and/or queer folks, to talk about the human side of software development and technology. Greater Than Code is providing a vital platform for these conversations, and developing new ideas of what it means to be a technologist beyond just the code. In this special episode we discuss: 01:56 - Chanté's Superpower: Spotting Talent (Dark Horses) 05:33 - Perceiving Talent/Potential Essentialism 09:15 - Confronting Biases and Societal Categorization/Division/Labeling 18:54 - Identity as a Feedback Loop 25:04 - Health and Wellness and Human Potential 27:00 - Privilege vs Potential Actuality, Capability, Potentiality Brain of the Firm by Stafford Beer Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis 36:31 - Framing; Framing as Related to Coaching Matt Ringel: Whiteboarding 101 Functional Fixedness RailsConf 2019 - Keynote: The Stories We Tell Our Children by Ariel Caplan 49:39 - Working with Organizations to Improve Diversity and Inclusion (Using Metrics) Campbell's Law ---- Learn more about Greater Than Code here Twitter: @GreaterThanCode Patreon: GreaterThanCode ---- Don't forget to follow us on Twitter/Instagram: @TDHCast | Facebook: @TheDarkestHorseCast

In this episode, we talk with Dr. Needhi Bhalla to bust the myth that science is set up to be a meritocracy. We discuss one of her recent manuscripts, and how scientists can embrace complexity and diversity as we ask questions and mentor early career researchers. Dr. Needhi Bhalla is currently an Associate Professor in the Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She finished her Ph.D. with Dr. Andrew Murray at the University of California, San Francisco and completed a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley with Dr. Abby Dernberg before becoming an Assistant Professor at Santa Cruz. Needhi is our first guest who is not a plant scientist. Her lab investigates chromosome structure and function in the nematode C. elegans. We talk about one of her recent pre-prints, “PCH-2TRIP13 regulates spindle checkpoint strength” and how her lab learned to tackle paradoxes and think outside of the box to make sense of unintuitive data. In this episode, we also discuss how increasing diversity can provide the perspectives needed to understand scientific complexity. We list ways in which underrepresented groups can find support, and talk about how those in the majority can work to counteract bias and disparity. How It’s Possible to Talk About and Improve Diversity and Inclusion Diversity and inclusion sound like universally accepted ideas, but when we try to talk about how we fall short of them and how we can improve, they become two of the most controversial political sparks in the fire that rages around our American discourse. Many people believe they can’t speak the truth in their hearts, and so they see no path forward. At the USC Price School, we have been challenging this assumption and lifting up these voices to unfurl a path that had been blocked until only recently. In this episode, LaVonna B. Lewis tells the story of this new effort, known as the Initiative on Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice, and she implores us to follow the Price School’s lead in our everyday lives. Prof. Lewis is a teaching professor in the Sol Price of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, where she currently serves as Director of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives. The Twenty Minute VC: Venture Capital | Startup Funding | The Pitch
Henry Davis is the President and COO @ Glossier, a New York brand that has taken the beauty world by storm. To date they have raised close to $35m in VC funding from some of the best in the business including past guests on the show Kirsten Green @ Forerunner, Index Ventures, IVP and our friends at Thrive. As for Henry, prior to entering the world of beauty and brands with Glossier, he sat on the other side of the table as a VC with Index Ventures in London. Before that, for his sins, Henry spent time in the world of corporate finance with Citi Group. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Henry made his way from rising star in London VC with Index to President of New York's hottest beauty brand, Glossier? 2.) From a personal security standpoint, was it tough to move from a more secure role in VC to startups? Why does Henry believe the nature of risk is forgotten in entrepreneurship? Why does Henry believe the best entrepreneurs risk mitigate? 3.)What does branded e-commerce really mean to Henry? Why does Henry believe that Amazon have already won multi-brand? What 3 dimensions does Henry present for how Amazon has changed a consumer's expectations of e-commerce? Have Amazon done more to make the market than destroy it? 4.) Why does Henry not believe that brands have as much brand loyalty as they think they do? With that in mind and many recent acquisitions, is this not a market of consolidation? Why are acquisitions cheap for incumbents today? How does this compare to the supply of capital available to startups, ultimately, altering their willingness? 5.) Henry has stated before that there are 3 strategies that can be done to improve diversity in the workforce, what are they? How must your hiring process be structured? How must your culture be structured? Where do most people go wrong in hiring diverse teams?
