Scott Eckstein shares his unique and diverse background creating solutions for an aging planet. Learn about his current roles as Managing Director of Active Living International and Chief Strategy Officer for CiminoCare Care, challenges curating quality care for his aging loved ones, and passion for educating the next generation of senior living providers.  About Scott Scott Eckstein has over 30 years of diverse research, analysis, development, operations, and education experience in the senior living space. He has been directly involved in senior living projects throughout the United States, South and Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia and specializes in providing strategic analysis, acquisitions, development, education, and operations advisory solutions for an aging planet. He is currently the Managing Director for Active Living International, an internationally focused senior living advisory firm, as well as Strategic Advisor for CiminoCare, a California-based middle market senior living operator.  Eckstein's senior living experience began in the nascent days of senior housing. He has helped promote the creation of purpose built environments for senior wellness, lifestyles and care as well as having specialized in the creation and operation of a unique range of residential alternatives for the aging population worldwide, from active adult housing through the spectrum to memory care.  Eckstein has held management positions at numerous senior living operators: Brookdale, Emeritus (now Brookdale), Aegis Living, Sunrise Senior Living and ARV Assisted Living (now Atria).  In addition, he was also the Director of Business Development at WellAWARE Systems (now part of Best Buy), a pioneer in the senior tech space. Eckstein was also, the Director of the Senior Living Program at Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration and was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Senior Living Executive in Residence at the Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living in the Carson College of Business at Washington State University (in which whose formation he was actively involved.) Key Takeaways A career in senior living and aging services is impactful because of the ability to make a difference in people's lives for a few years rather than a few days in a hotel or resort. There are incredible opportunities, but the industries don't market themselves well. Active adult (55+) communities serve a younger age bracket needing minimal care. The category overlaps with wellness real estate and intergenerational housing. Independent living adds care services and attracts people in their late 70s and 80s. One of the biggest problems in the active adult housing market is residents don't want to leave as they age and need higher levels of care. In the United States, you can't push people out legally. The biggest challenges in senior living are related to management, leadership, training, and culture. They are intricately related. The silent generation and baby boomers are focused on wellness and technology, so senior living communities are incorporating Centers for Healthy Living with massage rooms, fitness equipment and aging-related retail. Most communities offer telehealth post covid, and some offer a tech concierge. The most important questions to ask an assisted living community before signing on the dotted line include the turnover of team members and the training they receive, the flexible (or lack of) of the dining options. Dining is the major issue beyond care.

Kris Engskov, now a healthcare entrepreneur, discusses serving as the personal aide to President Clinton, the transformative experience of being a Starbucks barista for their executive training, pivoting to the health care industry first as President of Aegis Living and now as the cofounder of a venture-backed startup. He has fantastic insight into listening and asking questions, employee-first culture, servant leadership, and amazing stories from his time in the White House. Listen to the end to gain insight into his deliberate and intentional learning, as well as his advice to get in the door at the right organization no matter the job title. Top 3 takeaways: #1 Listening is a fundamental part of leadership. Great leaders constantly ask questions and listen to feedback, understand that the best ideas come from others, and are able to be vulnerable and admit when they're wrong. All of this takes humility, as does coming to work with a servant mindset in which leaders believe they work for their employees and not the other way around. Also worth noting is how Kris became a great listener in the first place; he analyzed and criticized himself to reflect on missed opportunities and improve his own skills. This internal dialogue and reflection is a common theme across leaders who live intentionally and is something we can all strive for. #2 Kris is disciplined and intentional about his learning and thinking. He prioritizes time to follow his curiosity, avoids being led around by social media, and reads books to go deep on a subject and advance his thinking in an intentional way. #3 People early in their career should focus on the organization, not job title. Getting your foot in the door no matter what level allows you to meet the team and be first in line for future opportunities. If you're in the right organization, your excitement and energy and creativity plus already being an internal member will allow you to absolutely fly. Youngest of 4 children by eight years. Going to “Poverty School”. His Mother moved them while he was in High School to get him in a better school, but that caused them to run out of money. The potato soup moment that led to a foundation later in life. Good companies need for sensitivity. We are all the best cheerleader on our own bandwagon. Having empathy matters. [11:20] minute: Could you expand on how your Mother instilled confidence in you? How she did that and the way it influenced you and your vision for yourself? Modeled the behavior. Comparisons to famous families to create that ambition. Entrepreneurial ventures in High School. Confidence is the best gift a parent can give a child. [15:00] minute: Our mindsets are malleable. Fixing it is the only real way to get to where you are trying to go. Dwayne J. Clark Show Notes Under his leadership, Aegis has grown to more than 30 locations, employs more than 3k staff members, and has served over 60k residents. Dwayne grew up poor with often not enough money for food. The family solution was to make a potato soup meant to last a week. Today, he supports more than 70 local and global charities and has founded four of his own including: The D1 Foundation, The Potato Soup Foundation, The Clark Family Legacy Foundation, and The Queen Bee Café. His book, ’30 Summers More’ contains the “lessons from longevity” that Clark has amassed from a front-line view as the CEO of Aegis Living, combined with the latest health and wellness research on living well as we age.   Download My Powerful Cheat Sheets to adopt today A Daily Routine of Successful Entrepreneurs (http://www.reachormiss.com/5-actionable-tips/)   Most passionate about AI don’t lack for passion! I have a book coming out called, 30 Summers More. I’ve been working on the book with a medical doctor and a PhD for almost 5 years now. I’ve taken care of 65,000 elderly in the course of my career and I thought, I’ve got to get some wisdom out of this experience, and maybe there are some things I can pass on to people. About 6 months into writing the book, I had a medical issue and ended up in the hospital for 3 days. I asked my wife to bring in the manuscript because I wanted to work on it. And as I sat there, working on the manuscript, I had this epiphany and said, “You know, this book is not about the 60,000 elderly people, this book is about changing the lives of 30, 40, 50, and 60 year olds.” The book took a turn at that point, as did my health. So, I changed my diet, my exercise program, I lost almost 50 pounds over the next couple years and totally changed my lifestyle, right down to the TV programs I watched. I started studying longevity programs all over the world; I would read research papers 2-3 hours a day, everyday. I traveled to different countries, talked to people who were 100 years old, I talked to people about their longevity practices. It’s fascinating. What I’ve done in 30 Summers More is brought back all the best practices and the things that we’re doing wrong that maybe killing us. Even though we’re highly educated, highly wealthy country, we’re still not even in the top 30 in terms of our health practices. We need to get better. Dwayne’s best advice about customer focus, marketing, and sales When we started the company, we had tee shirts and slogans that say, ‘Our customers are number two’. People would ask why we would say that. Well, it comes at the point of service, the interaction between the staff and the customer. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a restaurant, a hotel, the phone company, whatever it is, that person who is talking to the customer, that exchange, has to be phenomenal. That’s one of the things that I think are incredibly important: you have to focus on that interaction. Our new president, he oversaw $18 billion in revenue and 182,000 staff. Really successful companies focus on that point of contact. So, if your staff think you are a rotten company and don’t like their pay, their benefits, or culture, then that point of service, that view point, gets conveyed in that point of service with that customer. So, that’s the most important thing: you really have to focus on that interaction, that point of service between the line staff and the customers. Biggest failure with a customer I think, sometimes, you can choose the wrong partners. We get caught up in peoples’ resumes: maybe they have a lot of money, maybe they’ve done one thing right. I think what’s critically important for your delivery of service to your customer is the alignment of thinking. I’ve made one mistake where I didn’t choose someone well. I think because of that, it creates a cultural misalignment. I was impressed by one aspect of...

Get His newest book "30 Summers Left" https://dwaynejclark.com/30-summers-left Lessons from Longevity One day when Dwayne J. Clark was taking his usual 20-minute commute to work, he heard four science-based health stories in a row on the radio: one on how a group of people with Parkinson’s disease were found to respond favorably to cycling three times a week; another on the reality that many drugs tested on mice don’t work on people; a third on the question of the health benefits of marijuana; and finally, a report on why lonely people have more severe cold symptoms. Listening to the radio that day, Clark, ironically realized that he had never consciously applied those lessons to himself. He didn’t think he needed to. As the CEO of Aegis Living Clark he had held a lifelong obsession with the pursuit of health — both understanding and obtaining it. “My back-of-the-napkin estimate is that I’ve overseen the care of more than 60,000 amazing human beings,” says Clark. But as Clark has moved into his middle-age years, the psychic impact of his constant awareness of aging and death made him intensely more curious about living a good life, and, even more, living the greatest life possible. 30 Summers Left contains the “lessons from longevity” that Clark has amassed from a front-line view as the CEO of Aegis Living, combined with the latest health and wellness research on living well as we age. In addition, the book outlines what Clark calls the “microhabits” or bite-sized actions necessary for living our best life as we move into our senior years. Clark has a strong belief in active philanthorpy, the importance of building community and creating opportunity for others. Clark and his company Aegis Living contribute to more than 70 local and global charities, with Clark founding the following: • The Potato Soup Foundation • The D1 Foundation • The Queen Bee Café • The March for Civility Dwayne lives in Seattle with his wife, Terese, who shares his commitment to active philanthropy. Dwayne J. Clark is that rare individual. A true Renaissance man and polymath, he is the founder and CEO of Aegis Living, a filmmaker, author, playwright and philanthropist. The youngest of four children, Clark was raised by a loving, single mother who worked long, hard hours as a line cook. He grew up poor and often hungry, but through the generous gifts of others, Clark found his voice and the courage to stand up and stand out in the world. It’s no surprise then that for much of his career, he has focused on giving the disadvantaged citizens of society a hand up. Author and Playwright Clark is an accomplished playwright and producer with a passion for telling stories that inspire and uplift audiences. His first play, “Seven Ways to Get There,” is a true telling of his experience in a men’s therapy group. The well-reviewed production first premiered in early 2015 at Seattle’s ACT Theatre. In addition, Clark is a five-time published author whose books include: A Big Life; 30 Summers Left; My Mother, My Son; Saturdays with G.G. and Help Wanted: Recruiting, Hiring and Retaining Exceptional Staff. Philanthropist and Mentor Though Clark is now one of Seattle’s best-known and most successful CEOs, he grew up poor with often not enough money for food. The family solution was to make a potato soup meant to last the week. Clark says that something his mother said to him about those times has stuck with him and guided his entire life: “Dwayne, no matter what you do, don’t ever forget where you came from and that you had to eat potato soup every day for a week. When you have employees, be there for them, and they will always be there for you.” Clark never forgot. Today, he supports more than 70 local and global charities and has founded three of his own including: The Potato Soup Foundation A not-for-profit organization serving the needs of Aegis Living line staff and their families during times of crisis. The Foundation has helped people with emergency medical treatment, emergency housing, funeral expenses and a variety of other crisis situations. The Queen Bee Café The Seattle-based café and crumpet shop has two locations, on Capitol Hill and Queen Anne. One hundred percent of profits are donated to local charities, with past donations supporting the YMCA, The Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Gay Seattle Business Association Scholarship Fund. The newest cafe is currently donating proceeds to the Queen Anne Helpline, which provides emergency assistance for housing, food and more to the local elderly, disabled and low-income.
