We're here, it's November, and acorns are falling from the sky. Join Katy and Sam as the talk about one of their favorite sections of the Ozark Trail: The Upper Current River Section. We talk a bit about the history of this section, and the hard work that went into taking it from a seed of an idea to the rugged beauty of a route it is today. Big thank you to Kathie Brennan of the Ozark Trail Association for providing us these insights to share! Walk with us mile by mile as we recall our own experience and give you a good idea of what to expect from this very isolated and wild stretch of trail. This section really showcases some of the best the Ozarks has to offer, from the vibrant, spring-fed Current river, to the exaggerated hills, plentiful streams, ridgetop views, and our favorite rock feature that curves into the hillside. It has plenty to offer both day hikers and section hikers, and we hope you'll check it out! When you do, breathe some thanks for the dedicated collaboration between the many different agencies involved, and years worth of blood, sweat, and aching muscles put in by the volunteers. As always, thank you, we love you, we're sorry, and you're welcome! In this episode, follow an in-depth, step-by-step journey of transforming a surprisingly decent Ozark Trail mountain bike into the first Pedalshift e-bike (n=3 or 4 if you're counting). This mega-pod takes you from the initial setup to final tweaks, including component replacements, brake and pedal adjustments, and install of a mid drive motor. I'm hardly a bike mechanic, so will things to go sideways at least once like my typical bike adventures? eBike Project - The Build Hey I got an ebike! Where did I end up? Decided on build over buy - more flexibility Decided on new over used - couldn't find a good used one that wasn't $$$ Went with a Bafang middrive motor and a 52v 20Ah frame mounted battery - smaller than Brian's, but still pretty big. Watched a ton of YouTube videos and bought some tools! This took me several weeks because the bike lived at the cabin and I was back and forth a bit as I built it This was a journey… and the episode is a little long, but definitely brings you along tour journals style for how it went… 00:00 Introduction and Episode Overview 01:54 Choosing the Right Bike for the E-Bike Conversion 05:52 Initial Setup and Component Replacements 10:56 Challenges and Adjustments 18:05 Programming and Configuration 28:45 Battery Insights and Expectations 41:03 Assembly and Troubleshooting 48:11 Rear Brake Discovery 48:27 Chain Installation Challenges 48:30 Nighttime Reflections 49:27 Final Adjustments and Cable Management 50:51 Chain Sizing Tips 51:47 First Ride Impressions 52:32 Handlebar and Screen Setup 52:51 Rear Brake Issues 55:28 Pedal and Crank Problems 58:54 Cable and Sensor Installations 01:01:44 Tire Upgrade 01:04:14 Battery and Range Concerns 01:04:53 Shakedown Ride Plans 01:07:23 Final Preparations 01:16:47 Shakedown Ride Execution 01:25:48 E-Bike Confidence Boost 01:30:36 Closing Remarks and Future Plans
As National Manufacturing Day approaches this Friday, we're proud to recognize the manufacturers behind Walmart products, who play a pivotal role in creating opportunities for our communities and workforce. Kent International Inc. is a great example of this. They've assembled millions of bikes at their South Carolina factory, including Walmart's Ozark Trail mountain bike line, and have been instrumental in revitalizing bicycle manufacturing in the U.S. In this episode of The Huddle, I join Arnold Kamler, CEO of Kent International Inc., at their Manning, SC factory to talk about his journey working with Walmart and how they've evolved our Ozark Trail line. Arnold also shares valuable advice for anyone considering establishing manufacturing assembly in the U.S. When I was a kid, my first bike was from Walmart – and I know many of our customers got their start cycling the same way. As you shop for the holidays, consider checking out Ozark Trail bikes, knowing the significant impact each one has on people right here in the United States.
In this episode, I had the pleasure of catching up with Nick Fowler for the third time. Now, you might remember Nick as the guy who conquered the Self-Supported Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Pacific Northwest Trail and the Ozark Trail in our previous chats. Back then, he was dealing with some pesky ankle injuries but was determinedly preparing for a shot at the Self-Supported FKT on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). It's been a fantastic journey following Nick's evolution as a runner, hiker, and all-around person. And guess what? Nick not only took on the PCT challenge but crushed it in a jaw-dropping 52 days, 9 hours, and 18 minutes! We dive deep into his experiences, lessons learned, and how he's grown. His journey has it all….including blood, sweat, and tears! So, if you're up for some inspiring stories and a good dose of ultrarunning enthusiasm, you're in for a treat. Nick's journey is a testament to dedication and pushing boundaries, and it's always a blast chatting with him! Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/nickfowler3
Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Kathie Brennan is our guest today. She is President of the Ozark Trail Association, putting in hours of trail maintenance not only on her beloved trail, but also on the Appalachian Trail. She provides us with a sharp insight into trail work, with modern practices and even talks about leaf blowing for instant gratification! Find out more about the Ozark Trail at their website http://ozarktrail.com There's also a useful trip planner at https://www.ozarktrail.com/planner/ Two of our Class of 23 ladies join us today, with Joanne Flagg, fresh from her group hike in Iceland, now heading back to Harpers Ferry and the Southern Appalachians. Also, Jessica Lang-Wright has flipped north and recently–like Mary Marks and Mark Carpenter just last week–has climbed Moosilauke. I added Mary's picture last week. Here are Jessica's and Mark's. I got to sit down in person again with Nick Fowler. Nick had finished the Self-Supported FKT on the Pacific Northwest Trail when we spoke last. Since then, he was able to get the Self-Supported Fastest Known Time on the Ozark Trail! He's dealt with ankle injuries, but is training up for a stab at the PCT Self-Supported FKT! It's been fun watching his journey and hearing how he's learned and grown as a runner, hiker, and person. You'll love his personality and crazy stories from the trail and in life! Is this lethargy, or relaxation? Sam and Katy kick off their first episode of the New Year with a mini road trip. Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, it's off to hike we go... Our quest takes us down a forest service road of dubious condition, down a lovely stretch of the Ozark Trail, and lands us right next to the Current River. We talk about our new venture of trail adoption and the evolution of our gear as we continue to grow and adapt as backpackers. A pack of hunting dogs serenades us, and Kenai lets her discontent be known. Bear with us through some of the audio quirks; let it be known henceforth, that a vehicle moving down a rough forest service road isn't the best environment for recording. Who knew? Not us. As always, thank you for tuning in! Stay tuned after closing music for bloopers. You're welcome, and we're sorry. The weather has been mush, and our brains are mush too. The wind is playing games and a joyriding airplane runs amok; flies amok? Amok, amok, amok. Join us for a conversation about the Ozark Trail, the Ozark Trail Association, volunteer work, and how you can get involved. We were seeking redemption, and perhaps even revenge. Instead, the mountain Taum Sauk'd it to us. Join hosts Katy and Sam for part 2 of the Taum Sauk saga as they recall their recent backpacking adventure through this 35 mile section of the Ozark Trail. Battling heat, spiders, brush, rashes, burrs, chafing, gnats, little water, and a plethora of rocks, Team Giggles faced down both physical and mental obstacles to once again complete the section. Lessons were learned; some the hard way. And while the trail and conditions were difficult, the beauty of the wild surroundings could not be outshone. Gratitude rose, abounded, and flowed like the river. Sam and Katy recount the infamous OG experience with the Taum Sauk section of the Ozark Trail. Join us as we revisit suppressed memories of our encounter with the time vortex in evil fae land, rocks, coldness & cruel dreams, rocks, night-hiking, rocks, teeth-clenching river crossings, rocks, pain & exhaustion, rocks, the unfortunate consequences of other hikers leaving a trace, gorges of rocks, and our slow descent into madness. Oh, and did we mention, rocks? This was our very first backpacking trip together, and although it went awry...in just about every way it possibly could, there was beauty in the insanity, valuable lessons learned, and we found out together just how strong and resilient we can be. In this 90th Episode of 40 and 20, we attempt to find the objectively best field watch, for under $501 (turns out one of our watches was $500 exactly). As always, we use our standard scoring rubric, which is basically proprietary (i.e. we can’t remember what it was). We also talk about backpacking adventures, how to buy summer gear, and our poison immunities (or lack thereof). Steven Parker, Trail Maintenance Coordinator for the Ozark Highlands Trail Association, gives listeners an overview of the Ozark Highlands Trail - including logistics of planning a hike, best times to enjoy the trail and tips on making the most of your hike. We also discuss what it takes to maintain the trail and the things all hikers can do to support trail maintenance. The Ozark Highlands Trail Association (OHTA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit all-volunteer organization that was founded in 1981 to build, maintain, and enjoy the Ozark Highlands Trail (OHT). When complete, the OHT will stretch 320 miles across northern Arkansas from Lake Fort Smith State Park to Lake Norfork – where it will connect to the Ozark Trail in Missouri. We sat down with the one and only Kathie Brennan, President of the Ozark Trail Association. I have known her for many years and worked alongside her in the woods of Missouri building hiking trail by hand. She has worked her way up the ranks in a male dominated field. She leads by example with passion, heart and good old-fashioned hard work! Enjoy our chat and learn more at OzarkTrail.com.
Meandering over more than 400 miles of southeast Missouri is a network of hiking trails that’s been in existence since the 1970s: the Ozark Trail. Its history, along with its natural beauty, fill the pages of Don Massey’s photographic book titled “The Ozark Trail: Images of Missouri’s Longest Hiking Trail.” Massey is a member of the Ozark Trail Association, and he joins St. Louis Public Radio’s Jason Rosenbaum for this conversation alongside the association’s president, Kathie Brennan.
Today, I'm joined by the magical human, Mason Aid who is an educator and advocate for diversity and inclusion focusing on the LGBTQ community. They grew up on a small farm in rural Northeast Missouri and now live in the teeming metropolis of Columbia, Missouri. They got their start working with LGBTQ teens and found their passion through this work. Seeing the experiences of these amazing youth had a profound impact on Mason, and through their volunteer work they found opportunities training educators and social service providers. They have since grown those opportunities into the Aided podcast and are creating a movement to help equip others to be a safe person for youth who are coming out. Mason loves spending time with their wife and toddler, going on walks, cooking good food, and pretending to be a pretentious coffee snob. One of their biggest life goals is to hike the Ozark Trail across Missouri. Mason has their own podcast launching in July called Aided where they’ll be sharing so much wisdom for how to bring more inclusivity and diversity into your life & business as well as offering education on how to do this mindfully. Mason's NEW podcast, Aided, launches on July 1st! Support them by becoming a Patreon! And hire Mason as your D&I specialist by hiring them to speak at an event or for private consultation for your business!

Mr. Henningsen, or Bob and I sat down in his beautiful home in St. Louis to discus his lifetime journey of backpacking. Although he taught at the highschool I attended, I never had him for English, the subject he so fondy passed on to generations of eager students. Bob shares many of the great trips he's been on both with friends and as a solo effort. He describes his travels through Europe, and also, on the Ozark Trail here in Missouri. I'm sure he's going to look at the sentance structures of this description and cringe as my punctuation and grammer haven't gotten any better since the 7th grade, sorry Mrs. Richardson! This is one of my favorite interviews to date, a real treasure trove of great knowledge and experience.

And sometimes there are stories so strange, so unusual that they stick with you for a long time. The following unsolved cases will most likely do just that. These are 5 extremely strange and creepy mysteries. 5. The Severed Feet of The Northwest Seaboard Nike, New Balance and Ozark Trail – all these shoe brands have one thing in common – they’ve all washed ashore in the Northwestern United states, with a severed human foot inside. Since 2007, the Pacific Northwest Seaboard has been haunted. They've found sixteen shoes with feet inside and they have no clue where they’re coming from or who they belong to. Almost all of the severed feet are of the right foot, and many of them are wearing sneakers or hiking boots. 4. Dick Hansen After going through a tough divorce, Dick Hansen (a former college football star) was ready to move on and in good spirits. He called his female friend, "Jean" on April 29, 1991 to hang out with him at their favorite bar. After they left the watering hole, they got into Jean's car and drove to where Hansen had parked his pickup truck. Once there, they sat in Hansen's car and kept talking for a bit and it was then that Jean noticed another car had pulled over behind them. She didn't think anything of it since there was a mailbox on the sidewalk. 3. Baby Nicole Lee Hattamer It's gruesome enough to hear of an adult murdered but when it's a helpless baby, it's far more disturbing. Baby Nicole Lee Hattamer would have turned 18 years old had she been alive today. But her life was tragically cut short on December 26, 1989, shortly after celebrating Christmas. The 10-month old child was reported missing from her crib in her grandparent's home in Chippewa County, Wisconsin, despite the grandparents, her teen mom, and the mother's younger sister and brother being present inside the home at the time. 2. Jonathan Luna Jonathan Luna, a 38-year old U.S. Attorney’s assistant was found dead on December 4, 2003 in a small creek in Pennsylvania. He had died from drowning but also suffered multiple shallow stab wounds to his chest and neck from his own Swiss Army Pen Knife. On the night of his death, Luna was handling a case involving two men running a drug ring that were using a music studio as front. He was working out a plea deal with the defense attorneys and promised to fax over notes later in the night. It's believed that after he got home, he later on went back to his office to work on the plea deal some more. 1. Blair Adams The story of Blair Adams is considered one of the most bizarre cases of paranoia and death that even today people don't know what to make of it. Blair Adams, by all accounts, seemed like a normal 31-year old Canadian construction foreman. Despite a history of drug and alcohol possession, Blair had been clean and sober for a year and was doing great. His friends and family described him as cheerful but everything changed in the summer of 1996. Blair started behaving erratically. He would suffer wild mood swings and looked stressed out. When his mother asked him several times what was wrong, he replied "I don't think I should tell you about it." So there were 5 EXTREMELY STRANGE & CREEPY MYSTERIES All of these cases still remain unsolved. It's possible that time could bury any hope of an answer coming out but it's also possible that maybe, it's just a matter of time before the truth about these strange cases comes to light.
