This week Mike and Carlos be joined by Future Market's Mike Lee to talk over some of the most interesting stories of the week. Mike Lee also tells us about his new book Mise, which paints four different scenarios depicting the potential direction of our future food system. Here are all the stories we'll be talking about. Bored & Hungry Closes – Food & Web3: A check in on where things are In March 2022, NFT and crypto investor Andy Nguyen purchased Bored Ape #6184 along with three Mutant Apes and soon decided to establish a Bored Ape-themed restaurant named Bored & Hungry. The restaurant opened its doors on April 9, and by the end of its first day, it had served 1,500 burgers and had lines stretching around the block. Two years later, Bored & Hungry has closed. Last week, Nguyen announced on Instagram that the restaurant's original location in Long Beach, California, was closing. He shared that they had sold the concept to a franchising company from Asia known as HUNGRY Dao. Is AI-Powered Customer Interaction at Fast Food & Retail Giving Up too Much Privacy? A Fast Company article titled “How fast food is becoming a new surveillance ground” looks at how new customer interaction layers using things like bio-authentication, cameras, profile information, and more are a new risk for gathering information about the public. And earlier this week, we saw Steak n Shake launch facial recognition nationwide for check-in. Are we going through an airport or going to buy a surf and turf? Vow Thinks Imitating Meat We Eat is Bad Approach. Enter the Quail Parfait. Green Queen: The Syndey-based startup is today launching its cultivated Japanese quail in Singapore's Mandala Club, after the country's regulator gave it the go-ahead to sell the product. But unlike other rollouts of cultivated meat, where chefs are supplied with the meat itself (which they then incorporate into dishes), Vow is taking a novel approach. What restaurant kitchens get is a parfait containing its cultivated quail. Mike's Book about The Future of Food The four future visions in Mise (pronounced “meez”), which range from the year 2033 to 2067, are created to help people understand the potential long-term impact of things that are happening today in the world on our food system. The book identifies 5 major happenings in society, technology, the economy, the environment, and politics (abbreviated and referred to as the STEEP factors) that will have a profound impact on the way the world produces and consumes food. We'll be talking about some of these food futures and how it will shape our lives at the Smart Kitchen Summit on June 4-5th in Seattle. A long time ago in an era known as the Covid-19 Lockdowns, I met Andy Nguyen on a berm above the Grand River in Brantford, Ontario. We were looking or a California Gull and before finding it, I ran off to look for a Yellow-browed Warbler in Oakville. Because Andy was wearing a mask, as it was back in Covid times, I did not recognize him the next time we met. But after a while, we got to know each other and became good birding buddies here in Southwestern Ontario. We birded many weekends and even drove out together to see a Grove-billed Ani in Perth County, Ontario in the fall of 2021. Since then we have both completed our own Big Years. Andy took the opportunity in 2022 to do his own Ontario Big Year and learned a lot about, not just birding, but himself in the process. Big Years are, of course, an adventure, but they also are a learning experience and can teach you a thing or two about yourself, in the process. So join me as we step back in time, to late 2021 and the Andy's adventures as he planned and executed his own Big Year.
Welcome to another episode of the Big Year Podcast! My journey across North America to talk to and see what makes Big Year Birders Tick. It's July 2, 2023 as I broadcast from my Secret Big Year recording location, deep in the basement of my Brantford home. It's a rainy day so I am stuck indoors, not willing to brave the elements for anything but the rarest birds sighting. A far cry from what I or anyone else doing a big Year would do. Big Year birders brave the weather and more in quest of their goals. This is Episode 7, if I am doing my math correctly and in previous episodes we have talked to ABA Big Year Birders, but beginning with this episode, we are going to focus on my home province of Ontario, Canada. In 2022, while I was galavanting all across Canada, a group of 5 intrepid birders had dedicated themselves to an Ontario Big Year. Three of the top five birders, Ezra Campanelli, William Konze and Kiah Jasper each broke the all time Ontario Record. Two other birders, Susan Nagy and my local birding buddy Andy Nguyen were not that far behind. Though they did not break any records, their stories are just as interesting, as Big Years come in all shapes and sizes and are often as much a personal journey as they are attempts to break records. Over the next 5 episodes, we'll all get to know Kiah, William, Ezra and Andy. But today we have Susan Nagy from London, Ontario who recorded 335 species in Ontario, who's Big Year began with a challenge from a friend to see which of them could see the most birds back in 2021. But rarities and the fun of competition turned what was just a friendly competition into her own 2022 Ontario Big Year and helped her finish in the top 5 in Ontario during what was one of the greatest provincial Big Years ever. So enjoy Part One of my salute to the birders of the 2022 Ontario Big Year!

Looks like there's MAJOR trouble for Jonathan Majors. As stated on Deadline, the actor is facing domestic violence allegations in NYC after a March 25 incident involving a dispute with a 30-year-old woman. The unnamed victim was taken to a hospital with “minor injuries to her head and neck,” according to authorities at the time. Days following Majors' arrest, a thread of texts were made public where the alleged victim blamed herself for the incident. It has yet to be authenticated by authorities. On April 17, Majors' manager from Entertainment 360 and publicist The Lede Company fired him, according to Deadline. In other major news, Buzzfeed announced on April 20 that it will be releasing and laying off 15% of its staff, amounting to about 180 people following the news of the removal of BuzzFeed's news division. According to The New York Times, when BuzzFeed News was founded in 2011, in the run-up to the next year's presidential election, it explored stories both slight and serious through listicles and click-bait-style headlines designed to go viral on social media. The Pulitzer Prize winning news operation soon drew attention for its ambitious, sharp reporting, however, and went on to open overseas bureaus and invest in investigative journalism. Congratulations to model Sofia Richie and music executive Elliot Grainge who recently tied the knot over the weekend in the South of France. The 24-year-old model and designer, who is the daughter of legendary singer Lionel Richie, exchanged vows with Grainge, 29, the son of Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, during a ceremony in Antibes, France, according to People. Richie was stunned wearing three dresses on her big day. Sister Nicole Richie was in attendance and superstar dad Lionel Richie walked Sofia down the aisle. Richie and Grainge began dating in 2021 and became engaged one year later. Zendaya returned to the live stage after eight years. The superstar joined Labrinth during his Coachella set on Saturday and surprised fans with a superb performance of Labrinth and Zendaya songs from popular HBO show Euphoria including “All for Us” from the show's first season and “I'm Tired” from its second. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zendaya acknowledged the fact that it's been years since the Euphoria star appeared on stage to sing live during a scheduled set in an Instagram Story discussing the “magical” night. “Thank you all for welcoming me back on that stage with open arms. It's been a very long time, so I appreciate it,” she said in one story she recorded in the early hours after her performance before heading to bed. The 2022 FIFA World Cup is underway and many fans from across the world have come together to cheer on their favorite teams. As of Nov. 30, Netherlands and the United States, Argentina and Australia, France and Poland, England and Senegal are confirmed to face off starting Dec. 3. So many historic moments are also occurring at the World Cup. Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo representing Portugal scored a goal in his fifth World Cup making him the first person to do so. Also, Stéphanie Frappart is set to make history as the first woman to referee a men's World Cup match. Alongside assistants Neuza Back from Brazil and Karen Diaz from Mexico, the Frenchwoman will form part of an all-female refereeing trio officiating Costa Rica vs. Germany in their Group E match. On a Nov. 28 episode of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, actor Will Smith appeared and made his first TV appearance following his infamous Oscars moment when he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage following Chris' comments about Smith's wife Jada, causing an uproar on social media. With that aside, Smith appeared in his first TV broadcast since then to promote his upcoming film “Emancipation”. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” released in theaters on Nov. 11 and devoured the box office, earning $180 million in its opening weekend. It also broke the record for a November opening in North America, soaring past the previous high-water mark of $158 million set by 2013's “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” earning $150 million, according to Variety. Continuing the story of Wakanda, director Ryan Coogler changed the script following the death of lead actor Chadwick Boseman in 2020. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” pays tribute to the actor through his character, King T'Challa, and is an emotional ride. “Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday”... That song is the first thing I think of when talking about “Wednesday”, Netflix's latest hit TV show. While attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago. The show premiered on Nov. 23 and has received attention because of creator Tim Burton's clever comedy and horror sequence. It's only been a week since its release and “Wednesday” is already breaking records. Guest host Renzo Pocasangre introduces a new segment titled “Sound Waves”, a new part of Son of a a Beach which brings reviews on the newest music. Guest host Rosaura Montes discusses her featured film of the week in a segment called “Going to the Movies with Rosie”. War Games Group hosted by Joe Ingram, The Sales Genius is proud to have Andy Nguyen the designated “mash-up king in the food industry.” Andy Co-founded Afters Ice Cream and has reshaped the millennial age Food & Beverage industry. With 30 locations in Southern California, Afters Ice Cream has been both an entrepreneurial and social media phenomenon with thousands of people turning up for their store openings/events. And that's only one of the many restaurant concepts Andy and his team have started, to spice up the new dining and lifestyle scene! But Andy's journey to ice cream-filled donut success wasn't easy... Like many entrepreneurs, Andy and his school didn't get along so well, and he was quickly bored with his first "real" jobs. After a dozen+ years of struggle including adventures in real estate, re-selling sneakers, and Coachella VIP vendor, Andy founded a worldwide clothing brand, several food ventures, and a consulting agency. He has even started his own non-profit, Passion Chasers, to help the next generation of dreamers find their own entrepreneurial spark. Andy's story from the inside, including how he uses brand awareness and storytelling to appeal to future brand builders of their own. His influence and goals of helping improve the food scene and pumping new life into other cities. It's his unorthodox approach and insights into modern branding, marketing, and how to get your grind on; that have set him apart from the rest of Brand List: Afters Ice Cream Ground House Burger Shomi Noods Ramen Bar Portside Fish Co Dough & Arrow Matte Black Coffee Mad Bun Orng Cnty Pig Pen Delicacy Sticky's Chicken https://www.linkedin.com/in/andynguyen2/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/salesgenius/message

Thi and Phuong Nam Doan are two sisters born in Portland, Oregon. In 2020, their mom was diagnosed with lewy body dementia, a type of progressive dementia that leads to a decline in thinking, reasoning and independent function. The family has been navigating how to take care of a woman who used to take care of them. Their cousin, Andy Nguyen remembers how his aunt has always been like a second mother to him. The three grew up as a very close unit and they share how much the mom is the foundation in their lives. She is the matriarch of their family, the eldest who always cared for her younger siblings, the driving force behind the parents' escape from Vietnam and the caregiver to many. The recent news of the diagnosis has been hard for the family, and also the mom who has a hard time accepting it, feeling guilt and shame for putting a burden on her family. The three cousins share how they are navigating ambiguous loss/grief, a term that describes the grief one may feel for a loved one who has dementia. Andy Nguyen is a serial entrepreneur who's made noise in various industries, including real estate, streetwear, and the food and beverage industry. But he might be most well known as the “mash-up king in the food industry, ” as described by the Food Network. Or the face and founder behind the wildly successful “ Afters Ice Cream.” With 30 locations in Southern California, Afters Ice Cream isn't only one of its kind in its approach to business, branding, flavors, decor, and more. They're also a social media phenomenon, with thousands of people regularly lining up for their store openings and events. He's also the innovator and founder behind many other unique food concepts, including Bored & Hungry, Matte Black Coffee, Portside Fish Co, Dough and Arrow, Banh Xeo Boys, and Trill Burgers. Anyone who's met Andy can attest to what a kind and inspiring person he is. So when he agreed to be on the podcast, I couldn't be any more proud to take part in sharing his story. I initially got introduced to him by attending an event K-swiss was hosting highlighting entrepreneurs, and Andy was one of the speakers. He was there representing his non-profit, Passion Chasers. Another effort he started to help the next generation of dreamers find their own entrepreneurial spark. It was through hearing his story of feeling out of place growing up, the pressure he felt to follow a traditional career path and the ups and downs he had to go through before finding his stride, that I knew he was a perfect fit for the message I'm trying to spread with Breaking the Mold. The hope is that people will hear a story like his and feel inspired to follow their own path.In this episode, he walks us through his experience growing up, the growing pains he had in school while finding his way, how he got introduced and found success in the real estate appraisal business, only to discover his heart wasn't in it and moving on to creating his streetwear brand IMKING. As well as the story behind the discovery, growth, and success of Afters Ice Cream. He gives incredible insights and tips on: Defining what it means to create something culturally relevant The story behind his collaborations including; and how he structures those deals What he suggests for someone looking to test their own food conceptHis thoughts on food halls and CloudKitchens What he thinks goes into having a strong brandThe hard times that go on behind the scenes of being an entrepreneurHis plans moving forward and his new coffee shop with artist Joshua Vides, Matte Black Coffee Follow Andy's journey on Instagram @andythenguyenShow Page: @breakingthemoldpodcastHost Page: @alysa_scanzano

On this episode of The King's Code Podcast, I interviewed Andy Nguyen. Andy made a splash on social media by starting the first NFT-themed restaurant. Yes, those odd JPEGs of apes have more value beyond just looking cool and being an investment/gamble by themselves. In this show, Andy shares why he was an early adopter of NFTs, how he used the IP of the Bored Ape to open his restaurant, and what NFT investors have to be wary of before they risk losing their shirts on what might be the next huge investment class.
Germany has agreed to a long-term agreement with Qatar for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), hastening the process of Germany cutting ties from Russian energy. Los Angeles restaurateur Andy Nguyen is looking to demonstrate how the power of NFTs can translate into building a real-life brand by opening the first NFT-centred restaurant. Because it's a subject that's often taboo to talk about. Whether it be society's norms, the media, or just an old way of thinking, men are somehow led to believe that it's not okay to talk about their feelings or emotions, that it shows weakness and shouldn't be discussed, even among close friends. The problem is that it's not healthy and if left unchecked, it can lead to potentially serious consequences later. Luckily, for those who don't know where to turn to, there are organizations that can help, one example is Kings of Hearts, a non-profit co-founded by Andy Nguyen. Andy gives men a safe space to talk and be vulnerable with their feelings, to get stuff out of their minds and not be judged. Join us as we have a chat about men's mental health. Like many entrepreneurs, his journey wasn't easy, he dropped out of college, started a real estate appraisal company and realized how bored he was, launched a world-wide streetwear clothing brand “IM KING” which lead him to transitioning into the launch of many restaurant concepts. Afters Ice Cream changed the millennial age in the Food & Beverage Industry, with about 30+ locations to date and growing. His team have been able to spice things up and contribute his past experiences into his food & beverage concepts.
Meet my new friends Andy Nguyen and Nuke Kombian, 2 out of 3 of the Co-Founders of Kings of Hearts. In the words of Andy, KOH is “a platform where we gather men and also women, to dive into the conversation around modern day masculinity and how we can challenge the status quo. How can we reimagine what that can mean for us all today so that we can move forward positively and consciously.”This episode was based entirely around the topic of Masculinity - a conversation I have been wanting to have for quite some time now. You might wonder why I am providing men the platform to speak when they have been in the “drivers seat” for so long already... but the more I navigate my own journey with identity and more specifically feminism, I feel that you can not have feminism without masculinity. I view it is a matter of working from the inside - if we can help men, in turn, change will begin to trickle down and impact other areas and minority groups. Andy, Nuke, and myself chatted about:how do you define masculinity?redefining “toxic masculinity”, and addressing the unconscious masculinehow KOH help men have these difficult conversations amongst themselves and each other, through remaining curiousI asked them both what stereotypes around masculinity do you feel are detrimental to society as a whole?“man up”expressing their emotionsmasculine energetic & feminine energetic suppressing your emotions - how does it manifest in our lives if we never face these emotions?changing the vocabulary and labels we have around certain words / stigmas (i.e. patriarchy) leading with vulnerability (“You can be vulnerable and it takes nothing away from your masculinity.” -Nuke)tips & resources for some one wanting to bring more awareness into their lives and what steps they can take to move forwardwe finished off the conversation with Nuke asking myself what my biggest take away from our conversation wasTruthfully, this conversation can not be summed up in a few bullet points so check out the link below to give it a listen. “Men who win on patriarchal terms end up losing in terms of their substantive quality of life. The SocialRay Podcast: Stories of Entrepreneurs & Influencers
In this interview, I talk with Andy Nguyen one of the founders of Afters ice cream, known for their unique ice cream flavors and the signature Milky Bun. Andy is a serial entrepreneur who has many different businesses primarily in the food industry. We talk about Andy's journey into entrepreneurship and the food business and how he wasn't always the business minded person he was today. Quite the opposite, Andy was a rebel, misfit, and got kicked out of school at a young age. Also as an Asian American, Andy was trying to figure out what he wanted apart from the traditional path of studying to become a doctor or lawyer. He had different ideas of what he wanted to do and become and stumbled onto the clothing industry where he met upcoming artists and musicians like Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, and others. He built a successful clothing line, worked with many people in the entertainment industry, and eventually left to get started in the food industry when he thought of opening an ice cream shop Afters Ice Cream with novelty flavors like Jasmine iced tea flavor, cookie dough, and others. Afters ice cream has been served at Coachella, all across Southern California, and his ice cream flavors have gone viral because of their unique flavor and their Milky Buns, which are two hot donuts sandwiched with a cold ice cream filling inside.
