There are many experts offering insight into the National Championship game with Notre Dame facing Ohio State on Monday, January 20th. Among them all, one person stands out.Meet Gerry DiNardo, a former Notre Dame All-American & 1973 National Champion, now a long-time analyst at the Big Ten Network. I call him “Coach” as his vibe, presence and commentary continues to reflect the role he had as the head coach at Vanderbilt, LSU, and Indiana. He joined us on Y-Option, thanks to our founding partner 76, to discuss what made his time in South Bend so powerful under the legendary Ara Parseghian as well as why the loss to Michigan might be the reason that Ohio State is 60 minutes away from hoisting the national championship trophy. We also reflect on his time with Bill McCartney at Colorado, having been on his staff for 9 seasons. Coach DiNardo will have you laughing and learning as he shares poignant and vivid stories as a Buff.In addition, Jim Thornby and I reflect on the semifinals and the duality of being at the Cotton Bowl while my mind was with those in Los Angeles. As always, if you'd like to help those impacted by the raging fires visit this link: (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-01-08/how-to-help-victims-of-pacific-palisades-eaton-and-hurst-fires)Much love and please stay safe,YogiThis episode was executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production.Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. December 31, 1973... The Fighting Irish taking on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl with the National Championship hanging in the balance. Ara Parseghian coaches his Notre Dame kids to a 24-23 upset win over Bear Bryant with Tom Clements leading the way and Frank Allocco on the sidelines, as usual, rooting on the starting QB. That was Allocco's job as the backup quarterback and he did it the way he did everything... with grace and enthusiasm. And after the 1974 season ended, Alloco's patience and work ethic would pay off. He would be the starting QB for Notre Dame. And then he wasn't. A separated shoulder before the season began ended his senior year. He would never start a game while playing at South Bend. Most would be devastated that the dream they had worked so hard to fulfill only to have it taken away when they were so close to achieving it. But not Frank. He admired greatly his coach Ara Parseghian who would often say, ‘Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents that which under prosperous conditions may have remained dormant.” Allocco graduated from ND and started a coaches clinic for basketball. Years later, that turned into a high school coaches job in California in Walnut Creek where he won a state championship in 1995. From there, he went to Concord De La Salle High School and won a 2nd state championship there. He would go on to win 600 games faster than any coach in the history of California and ended his 24 year coaching career 2nd all-time in winning percentage and is the only coach to win state titles with 2 different schools. Now at the University of San Francisco, Allocco is still changing young people lives, just like his coach and mentor Parseghian did at Notre Dame. He relishes his time in South Bend and tells us how he went from 9th on the depth chart to the backup. How he admired the tenacity of another player at Notre Dame just looking for a chance: Rudy Ruettiger. And how a chance meeting with an 86-year old "Angel" changed his life. 50 years ago he was the backup to the man on the cover of the 9/30/74 issue of Sports Illustrated, Tom Clements, but on the Past Our Prime podcast he's the starter and the winner. Boston made its first seven tries from long distance in the fourth and wound up 9 of 12 beyond the arc over the final 12 minutes as almost everybody got involved in the 3-point flurry. NBA – Silver says NBA likes ‘parity of opportunity’ for its teams Over the last three seasons, six franchises have reached the NBA Finals. The league has seen five Eastern Conference champions in the last five seasons. This will be the fourth consecutive year that the team which hoists the trophy won’t be the same as the one who did the year before. Adam Silver likes all these numbers. The NBA Commissioner, in his annual pre-NBA Finals address Thursday night held just before Game 1 of the series between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics, repeated his familiar refrain that he doesn’t care who wins. But he also sees the value in some unpredictability from one year to the next as far as which teams make it to the title round. Griner doesn’t have access to email. She’ll either write a response on paper and her lawyers will take a photo of it or she’ll dictate a response.  The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been detained in Russia for more than 100 days after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage at an airport near Moscow. Tennis – French Open – Gauff to face Swiatek in final It will be top-ranked Iga Swiatek against American Coco Gauff for the French Open women’s singles title on Saturday. Keenum is the chairman of the CFP board of managers. He added that he intends to meet with his fellow presidents and chancellors in August to discuss what comes next for the playoff. An attempt to expand the playoff from the current four-team format to 12 teams before the current 12-year contract with ESPN expires after the 2025 season fell apart last fall. Horford finished with 26 points and the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16 in the final 12 minutes after trailing by 15 points late in the third quarter. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs – Conference Finals Last Night Colorado Avalanche 4, Edmonton Oilers 0                        (COL Leads 2-0) Avalanche 4, Oilers 0 – Francouz, Kadri lead Avs to 4-0 win over Oilers in Game 2 Nazem Kadri had three assists in a 2:04 span in the second period, backup Pavel Francouz stopped 24 shots for his second career playoff shutout and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 on Thursday night to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. The Avalanche broke through in the second after a scoreless opening period that featured something rarely seen so far in this series — defense. Artturi Lehkonen and Josh Manson scored 15 seconds apart to get things going in the second, with Mikko Rantanen adding another on Kadri’s third assist. Nathan MacKinnon scored late in the third. Game 3 is Saturday in Edmonton. Tonight Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers, 8:00 p.m.          (NYR Leads 1-0) NHL – Flames’ Sutter wins Jack Adams as NHL coach of the year Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames is this season’s recipient of the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top head coach.  Sutter oversaw the biggest one-year improvement by any team in the league guiding the Flames to the Pacific Division title a year after they missed the playoffs.  Sutter received 54 first-place votes to beat Florida’s Andrew Brunette and New York Rangers coach Gerard Gallant for the honor. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Chicago Sky at Atlanta Dream, 7:30 p.m. WNBA – Griner receiving, answering WNBA players’ emails Brittney Griner has been able to receive emails and letters from WNBA players through an account Griner’s agent set up to allow them to communicate with her.  The emails are printed out and delivered sporadically in bunches to Griner by her lawyers after being vetted by Russian officials. Swiatek won her 34th straight match today, dominating Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1. Gauff has reached her first Grand Slam final by beating Martina Trevisan of Italy 6-3, 6-1. NCAAFB – CFP board chair: New format ideally in place by June 2023 The university leaders who oversee the College Football Playoff want the next format for determining a champion settled by this time next year. Mississippi State President Mark Keenum says the conference commissioners in charge of building the postseason system for the 2026 season and beyond will restart the task in the coming weeks. NCAA – Roger Valdiserri, Notre Dame SID for 3 decades, dies at 95 Roger Valdiserri, who helped tell the story of some of Notre Dame’s greatest football teams as the school’s sports information director for three decades, has died. He was 95. Valdiserri’s family says he died of natural causes at a retirement community outside Chicago. The family said he was surrounded by his five children at the time of his death. Valdiserri was a native of Pennsylvania who graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. His first job at the school was an administrative assistant for football coaches Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan. He took over as the school’s sports information director in 1966 under coach Ara Parseghian. Notre Dame won the first of four national titles in football during Valdiserri’s tenure that season. NBAGL – NBA G League – Grand Rapids Gold moving to Van Andel Arena One month after officials decided that the DeltaPlex Arena will close, the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G-League have had to search for a new home venue.  The team will move to the downtown Van Andel Arena starting this upcoming season.  Van Andel Arena is the 4th largest arena in the state of Michigan and is currently the home of the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, who are the Detroit Red Wings primary affiliate.  Van Andel Arena holds just under 11,000 for hockey, and 11, 500 for basketball.  The Gold, who are the affiliated of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, won’t be the first professional basketball team to call Van Andel Arena home, the Grand Rapids Hoops of the now defunct CBA played there from 1996-2001.  The 2001 Big Ten Women’s Basketball tournament was also held at Van Andel Arena. Mississippi State President Mark Keenum says the conference commissioners in charge of building the postseason system for the 2026 season and beyond will restart the task in the coming weeks. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 3, Minnesota Twins 2 Toronto Blue Jays 8, Chicago White Sox 3 Chicago Cubs 7, St. Louis Cardinals 5 Tigers 3, Twins 2 – Daz Cameron’s HR in 8th lifts surging Tigers past Twins 3-2 Daz Cameron hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the surging Detroit Tigers held on to beat the slumping Minnesota Twins 3-2. Cameron’s 416-foot shot to left-center came off Emilio Pagan. Alex Lange gave up two walks and struck out one in the pivotal eighth inning and Gregory Soto earned his 10th save. AL Central-leading Minnesota has lost seven of 10 games and is still the division’s only team with a winning record. The fourth-place Tigers have won seven of their last nine games after a poor start this season. Blue Jays 8 White Sox 3 – Manoah sharp as Blue Jays beat White Sox, win 8th straight Alek Manoah pitched into the eighth inning, Teoscar Hernández homered and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to eight games by beating the Chicago White Sox 8-3. Santiago Espinal had three hits and three RBIs as the surging Blue Jays won for the 12th time in 15 games. Chicago was swept in the three-game series and has lost six of eight. Manoah allowed three runs and six hits, walked one and struck out five in 7 2/3 innings. He’s 9-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 13 career home starts. Cubs 7, Cardinals 5 – Schwindel, Contreras and Happ homer as Cubs top Cards 7-5 Frank Schwindel launched a long solo homer and doubled among his three hits and the Chicago Cubs topped the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 for their third straight victory. Willson Contreras went deep for the third time in four games and Ian Happ also homered to help Chicago end the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak. St. Louis has also won five in a row at Wrigley Field dating to last July. Paul Goldschmidt doubled to extend his hitting streak to 24 games and reached safely for a career-best 38th consecutive game. Keegan Thompson allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings for a win in his fourth straight outing. Today St. Louis (Mikolas 3-3) at Chicago Cubs (Stroman 2-4), 2:20 p.m. Detroit (Rodriguez 0-0) at N.Y. Yankees (Cole 4-1), 7:05 p.m.               WSJM/WCSY 6:45 Chicago White Sox (Velasquez 2-3) at Tampa Bay (McClanahan 5-2), 7:10 p.m. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Finals Last Night Boston Celtics 120, Golden State Warriors 108              (BOS Leads 1-0) Celtics 120, Warriors 108 – Celtics have huge 4th, beat Warriors in Game 1 of NBA Finals Jaylen Brown fueled a comeback charge and scored 24 points, Al Horford hit six 3-pointers and the Boston Celtics rode the most lopsided fourth quarter in NBA Finals history to a 120-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 1. Horford finished with 26 points and the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16 in the final 12 minutes after trailing by 15 points late in the third quarter. Horford finished with 26 points and the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16 in the final 12 minutes after trailing by 15 points late in the third quarter. Madeline Smothers was born in Rockville, Illinois, in 1917. By 1935, she joined members of her extended family living in South Bend's east side, soon befriending people in power like lawyers J. Chester and Elizabeth Fletcher Allen. At this time, South Bend was rapidly evolving—but for African Americans who left the South to chase factory jobs up north, they were still confronting the entrenched racism they hoped they were fleeing when they left the South. As entrenched as racism was, many people still pushed for change—including Ms. Smothers' friends, the Allens. And the Allens' young, fair complected friend Madeline was a palatable candidate for some of the first jobs held by African Americans downtown. The trust she built led Ara Parseghian, the University of Notre Dame's football coach in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, to ask Madeline and her husband for help recruiting and retaining Black athletes. In 2003, David Healey sat down with Madeline in the east side home she lived in for decades. Madeline talked about the early days of South Bend's growing African American community, her time with the Allen family, and how different her experience was as a light-skinned African American woman in South Bend. This episode was produced by Jweetu Pangani from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend, and by George Garner from the Civil Rights Heritage Center. On the football field, he won a National Championship at Notre Dame and four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and on the battlefield, he won a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart while fighting with the US Army in Vietnam. Join Bernie as he welcomes Steelers Hall Of Honor member Rocky Bleier to the program to discuss growing up as the son of a bar owner in Appleton, WI, the origin of his nickname and the myriad of emotions he experienced when being drafted into the NFL, and then, into the armed forces. Plus: details of the extraction operation during which Rocky was wounded in Vietnam; playing for Ara Parseghian and Chuck Noll; the games and plays that defined his role on the great Steelers teams of the 70s, and the enduring bond shared by those teams and the city of Pittsburgh. Later, Rocky gives insight on his many charitable endeavors, including his Beating The Odds Foundation, which helps students be successful outside their school's curriculum, before telling Bernie what really happened at the end of the 2019 E60 documentary, The Return, and more!

What do Jim Brown, Eddie Robinson, Yogi Berra, Archie Manning, Ara Parseghian, Don Shula, Otto Graham and Chuck Knoll all have in common? They're each connected in one way or another to former NFL MVP, Bert Jones. Today, Bernie welcomes The Ruston Rifle to the show to connect all of those dots, as well as the ones leading back to his All-Pro father and All-American Grandfather. You'll hear tales of summer vacations spent at Cleveland Browns training camp in the 60s; friendly timekeeping methods at LSU in the 70s; following Johnny Unitas in Baltimore; the injuries that cut Bert's career short, and the Quarterback Challenge that almost dragged him out of retirement. Bert also talks about the time he almost transferred to Notre Dame, the Lite Beer ads that helped put his kids through college and the time Bill Belichick called him the best “pure passer” he'd ever seen. Finally, Bert expresses his love of today's NFL game and his immense pride in running his family's lumber company.

We are moving forward with Notre Dame's Greatest Coaches by Steven Singular and Moose Krause - even if that means in a different way. After some bad takes, I finally decided to just read chapters 12 and 14. Within those chapters, we get a reveal about Ara and his particular coaching style. There was a tremendous amount of intensity that Parseghian put out, but it was controlled and used for singular purposes. Hear how Ara's determination to win lead to innovations for him as a coach that ultimately lead to a lot of victories for Notre Dame. There's also some very flowery language about the University of Notre Dame, the football program, and a call to violence. Please forgive my raspy voice as it's a little (like a lot) more noticeable with lengthy readings. Don't forget to rate and review. On the November 2nd, 2019 edition of Notre Dame Federal Credit Union's Irish Sports Saturdays, host Angelo Di Carlo interviews former Irish All American defensive lineman Mike McCoy in the Focus on Faith segment. Mike was a star defensive lineman on Ara Parseghian's 1969 squad. He says athletics was his gift from God, but his purpose in life is to share his story with Catholic school kids throughout the country. That's what Mike does more than 100 times a year as he travels the country speaking to Catholic schools. Hear why it means so much to him. Plus, Mike reflects on what it was like playing for Ara and the famed game in 1968 when the Irish shutdown OJ Simpson. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Wisdom-Unplugged2.png () Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 422 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Adversity = Opportunity – Wisdom Unplugged Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is day 422 of our trek, and it is Thursday and time for our 2-3 minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom on Tuesday & Thursday. So let's jump right in with today's nugget. Today's quote is from Ara Parseghian, the famous coach of Notre Dame. His quote is “Adversity affords unique opportunities to elicit superior performance from hidden talent that would otherwise remain dormant.” https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/overcoming-adversity-1-2-2.jpg () Adversity tends to become a refining fire in many people's lives. When you are pushed and tested, your true resolve will become evident.  Talents that you did not realize were part of the very fabric of your soul will come to the surface and will be your strength. This new found strength will take you to new heights so that you can boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Every biography that you will read about a person who has achieved any type of success or recognition shows a life filled with adversity, trials, and failures. We should not only welcome these times of adversity, but find joy in them. Jesus's half-brother James put it well when he wrote in his letter in Chapter 1:2-4, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” That is a wrap for Wisdom Unplugged for today. Thank you for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and most importantly your friend as I serve you through the Wisdom-Trek podcast and journal each day. As we take this trek of life together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen Intentionally Learn Continuously Lend to others Generously Lead with Integrity Leave a Living Legacy Each Day This is Guthrie Chamberlain reminding you to Keep Moving Forward, Enjoy Your Journey, and Create a Great Day Every Day! See you tomorrow for Philosophy Friday!
