Mother Jones, a north star for us all. Mary G. Harris was born August 1st, 1837 in Cork, Ireland. In 1847, the Irish faced starvation from a potato blight caused by a British feudal economic policy of monocropping. Her family immigrated to North America as part of one of the greatest mass exoduses from a single island in history. Upon arriving in Toronto, the Harris family faced discrimination due to their immigrant status as well as their Catholic faith and Irish heritage. At age 23 she found a teaching position at a convent in Monroe, Michigan. Dissatisfied with the work conditions, she moved to Chicago then to Memphis, where in 1861 she married George E. Jones, a member and organizer of the National Union of Iron Moulders. In 1867, a yellow fever epidemic in Memphis killed her husband and their four children in the matter of two months. She was 30 years old. After that tragedy, she returned to Chicago to begin a dressmaking business catering to the upper class. But four years later, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed her home, shop, and possessions. The 1877 railroad strike further radicalized her and she joined the Knights of Labor where she helped organize workers in an era where protests and strikes could end with police shooting and killing of workers.  The violence directed at workers helped grow the Knights to become the largest labor organization in the country with over a million members. As May 1st, 1886 approached, the Knights of Labor prepared for a general strike demanding an 8 hour work day. The Chicago Haymarket bombings created a reactionary tsunami leading to the demise of the Knights of Labor. As the Knights crumbled into oblivion, Mary Jones became an educator and organizer with the United Mine Workers, traveling throughout the United States. By age 60, she had assumed the persona of "Mother Jones" by claiming to be older than she was, wearing outdated black dresses and referring to the male workers that she helped as "her boys". The first reference to her in print as Mother Jones was in 1897. In 1902, she was put on trial in West Virginia for ignoring an injunction banning meetings by striking miners. The district attorney called her "the most dangerous woman in America.” In 1903, Jones sought to organize children who were working in mills and mines in Pennsylvania. Many of the children at union headquarters were missing fingers and limbs, and she attempted to get newspaper publicity for the bad labor conditions experienced by children. However, the mill owners held stock in most newspapers and would not publish the facts about child labor.  So she organized a march from Philadelphia to Oyster Bay, New York, the hometown of President Theodore Roosevelt, demanding children to go to school and not the mines. Though the president refused to meet with the marchers, the incident brought the issue of child labor to the forefront of the public agenda. During the Paint Creek–Cabin Creek strike of 1912 in West Virginia, a shooting war broke out between United Mine Workers members and the private army of the mine owners.  Mary Jones defied Martial law in the area to continue public speaking and organizing and she was arrested and sentenced to twenty years in the state penitentiary. After 85 days of confinement, her release coincided with Indiana Senator John W. Kern's initiation of a Senate investigation into the conditions in the local coal mines.  Jones remained a union organizer for the UMW into the 1920s and continued to speak on union affairs. Mary Harris Jones died in Adelphi, Maryland just outside Washington, D.C. She is buried in the Union Miners Cemetery in Mount Olive, Illinois. Mother Jones: “And I long to see the day when Labor will have the destinies of the nation in her own hands and she will stand a united force and show the world what the workers can do.” Research was based on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Jones.  ABOUT EMLab Empathy Media Lab is produced by Evan Matthew Papp and we are a proud member of the Labor Radio Podcast Network. Have you ever heard of "languishing"? As we reach the end of Stress Awareness Month, in this week's episode, Coach Colette discusses a recent NY Times article by organizational psychologist, Adam Grant. In the article, Grant introduces the term, "languishing", as a possible description of how you might be feeling lately. The idea of languishing— a void between depression and flourishing, or a lack of total wellbeing— has resonated with many, including Coach Colette. She uses this episode to provide some advice for re-centering and gaining a little motivation. It could be physical activities or more mentally-stimulating activities— anything to get your body or mind moving and your soul more grounded. What's your go-to activity to ground yourself when you find yourself languishing? Coach Colette gets real with you in this week's Unplugged segment— she acknowledges the way languishing has impacted her professionally, mentally, and emotionally. She's been feeling disconnected from her regular self-care habits and is seeking out new ways to get into that flow state. As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, Coach Colette will be introducing a plethora of ideas in the coming weeks to revitalize your own self-care habits. And, if you're in a place where the weather is warming up, why not take some of those practices outside? What self-care practices no longer serve you? How can you reflect on those habits and adjust them to feel your best? If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it on Instagram and follow @coach_colette. What is the deeper, symbolic meaning of an overturned alms bowl? What reasoning goes into the decision as to whether a protest sign is written in English or Burmese, or as pictograms, or emojis? And how and why has General Min Aung Hlaing's height become a focus of the protest messaging? These are just some of the concepts that “Brad” and “May” (not their real names) have begun to explore on their new Facebook page, “https://www.facebook.com/Burmese.Protest.Memes/ (Burmese Protest Memes and Signs Translated and Explained): Translating and explaining Burmese memes and protest signs for an English audience.” Unlike in other countries, where internet connectivity has been available for a much longer time, in Myanmar, “online culture” is relatively new. As May succinctly explains, “We're the generation that has grown up with internet and social media. And memes are a way to communicate with each other, to share not just jokes, but also feelings… So yeah, memes are perhaps a symbol of what our generation is.” Brad and May felt that much of the outside world was missing the subtle messaging that protesters were trying to communicate by their signs, and hoped that their new page would help in this regard.  It has developed to explaining the deeper, underlying meaning of the many Burmese memes that are now proliferating, both online and in real life today. In doing so, they reveal the many themes that protesters are connecting to their movement, including British colonialism, Burmese Buddhism, ethnic identity, numerology and astrology, and specific events both in the protests as well as recent political incidents connected to the coup. If you would like to engage beyond merely listening about this crisis, please considering contributing a donation to the nonviolent protest movement in Myanmar. https://insightmyanmar.org/donation (Any donation made on our website) goes immediately to those in need. College was to Terry’s ticket to freedom. It was also expected from his parents that both of their children would go to college and graduate. Unfortunately, Terry’s SAT scores were very low. He tried numerous colleges that seemed appropriate for him, but it seemed that he wasn’t “appropriate” for them. Finally, a small school in central North Carolina gave Terry that letter of acceptance that he had so anxiously awaited.Terry’s parents, like all anxious parents, waved goodbye to him for it was time to start school – his freedom. Terry turned up the stereo and was “free at last.” This new experience of being on his own was extremely overwhelming. The social activities of dorm life and fraternity parties didn’t leave much time for scholastics. After a semester and a half, Terry’s father became tired of sending him to “fun 101”. Terry didn’t keep up his end of the deal by passing classes. Tears came down his face as they pulled out of the college driveway. Terry started to wonder what he would do now.Terry decided to give college another try, but closer to home. He picked up some classes at West Virginia University in pursuit of a degree in psychology. Due to Terry’s “proud” performance of academia the first time, his GPA was less than a 2.0, he was only allowed to take a few classes. He guessed he had to prove that he had the “old college try” in perspective. The next two years at WVU Terry was putting at least a half a foot forward into the academics. He had cracked the 2.0 barrier and managed to have a fairly good social life. He enjoyed school and became involved in his psychology degree by helping other graduate students with their research, grunt work. It really provided him with a firm sense that he wanted to help others via his degree. About halfway into his junior year, Terry’s credits were all out of order so he took the summer looking for a job. His father had just acquired some property up in northern Canada; Terry’s childhood dream was about to come true.Terry’s dad wanted to build a cottage, nestled in the trees, and looking out upon the lake, kind of an “On Golden Pond” feature. Terry’s friend Sean and his cousin Todd were also jobless, so Terry proposed to his father that they help build the cottage. They loaded Terry’s vehicle with hammers, nails, paints and other building materials. When Terry met the foreman he was told that “black muck” was found where the cottage was to be built. The best way to describe it was like black Jell-O. The land had to be cleared out before they could proceed with building the cottage.Well, that gave Terry about a week to do nothing but fish, how relaxing. As May was coming to an end, the weather began to warm and presenting a far greater problem than he could ever realize… black flies. These things can eat you alive and practically drive you crazy. The Canadians were used to them, but to Terry it was pure hell. They were told not to wear anything fragrant because it would attract flies. After about two weeks of stinking, they decided it was time to clean up and do laundry. While driving back from their laundry excursion from a remote Indian town, Terry told his friends to be on the lookout for wildlife. Turning a corner, Terry’s headlights fell upon some unexpected wildlife; a bull moose was standing in the middle of the road. Terry locked his brakes and told his friends that they were going to hit it. As the car came to a stop, Terry called out to see if they were alright. They said they were, but how was Terry?  Terry could not move. His head was bent down to his chest because the roof of the car on it.After the moose was off the car, Terry’s friends tried pulling the roof off him. He told them that would be futile plus he did not need to be moved. A passing car was flagged down and took Terry’s cousin back to town for help. The nearest ambulance was 60 miles away and would end up taking an hour and a half to get to Terry. As he was sitting in the car, a lot of thoughts went through his mind. How badly hurt was he?  Did he have any cuts on head?  Was he going to live?  Terry felt a peace of mind come over him; he was ready to accept what was to be.Terry found that he had a spinal cord injury and was a quadriplegic. He couldn’t move from his neck down and required 24 hours a day help 7 days a week. After two months in intensive care at a Toronto hospital, he went back to his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for rehabilitation. Terry’s family and friends were very supportive, expecting nothing more than the same old Terry. As he began his rehabilitation, Terry began to think about his future. He had completed over half of his college credits. He contacted his college advisor and told him what happened. They were able to work out an independent study project. Terry didn’t want to waste any more time, he want to continue to pursue his college degree. He was even more determined to work in a field of helping others. The campus at WVU was too hilly to navigate so he was able to work out a program with WVU and the University of Pittsburgh to take classes at Pitt. The credits would be transferred to WVU. That summer he began classes at Pitt. He spent the next couple of years completing his education and graduated in 1980. Terry was very proud and glad that he had completed his undergraduate degree in psychology. He was now ready to hit the job market and he thought that surely somebody would hire a college graduate. For two years Terry worked at a county run nursing facility, but it just wasn’t what he wanted. He completed an application to attend Pitt’s School of Counselor Education and the School of Social Work so he could receive his masters degree. He was accepted to the social work program with an emphasis on counseling. Keep in mind that during his bachelors program Terry was basically a “C” student. He was now forced to a higher level of learning, which means that he needed to become an “A – B” student. After 18 months of intense education, Terry had done it. He earned a Masters in Social Work.Terry was able to work in such settings as rehabilitation hospitals, community mental health, advocacy programs, and at the present, the State Department of Health of Tennessee. Terry was able to look back at what was a traumatic event that has impacted his life greatly in a very positive sense. Terry knew that he could accomplish what he set out to do regardless of his “disability,” which at many times is very much an “ability”. Tragedy can strike when you least expect it and in the most unexpected fashion. It is how one uses this experience and turns it into a positive that makes them a “winner.” Terry overcame adversity which he thought would be impossible; Terry was a “winner.”Thanks for listening in advance and have a bless day.To learn more about James, visit Professor of Perseverance. This week brings on the collapse of late spring, the accumulation of leafing and flowering overloading the landscape until it is overcome by summer. As May grows and moves toward June, there is a darkening and a maturing of the leaves. The mix of chlorophyll thickens in foliage, and as the sun moves higher in the sky, it strikes the earth at a more direct, less flattering angle. The eclipse of the land beneath the closing canopy erases the dapples of spring. The porous latticework of April flora disappears. Only the shade plants survive now under the full crown of the woods: the leafcup, the enchanter’s nightshade, the tall bellflower, the wood nettle, the clustered snakeroot. But in fields and gardens, new flowers appear every day, hiding the debris of spring, covering decay with a deceiving momentum and arrogance, promising that there can never be a final cycle of blossoms. Strawberries ripen, and then the raspberries and then the cherries and the apples and the blackberries. This

As May begins, the weather continues to offer that typical grab bag of conditions that is typical for spring in the Northwest: plenty of clouds, along with showers, sunbreaks, even possible thunderstorms. And often, forecasts predict the probability of these phenomena: a 10 percent chance of rain, say — or 50 percent chance. That sounds plausible, but it turns out most people don’t know what that actually means.

Right now, something incredible's happening in the oil market. Price is moving at a velocity at the will of gravity. Here, gravity is demand. On March 26th, I wrote the following.... "This is what I’m gonna do. I’m going to speculate oil will go lower and higher all at the same time #oil $USO..." This statement needs to be taken literally. i.e. the lack of demand would distort the present price of oil relative to the future. What's even more interesting is when time elapses. As May oil contracts transition to June, prices are also getting sucked into the vortex of gravitation pull.

Contractor Success Map with Randal DeHart | Contractor Bookkeeping And Accounting Services

This Podcast Is Episode Number 0279, And It Will Be About Construction Contractors Need A Nudge To Change Construction Contractors know lots about the work they do. As an expert in their fields from finish carpentry, tile setter, masonry, roofer or landscaper the finished product looks beautiful. When a skilled craftsman does the work, it looks effortless. Others think I could have done that. Most of the time we are so busy looking for the finished product that we are unappreciative of all the work that happens behind the walls, floor, and ceilings. It is magic when we turn on the light switch, run the dishwasher, start a load of laundry and take a shower or turn the thermostat up or down. Air Conditioning is awesome on a hot day. For us; in the Seattle area, “Hot” is only slightly warm to Phoenix, Arizona or many parts of California. Seattle gets much Rain and once in awhile snow (like over my house) it may be raining everywhere else, but if there is snow in the forecast, I will see snow for a little while. It may not stick but is usually what you want to see on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. As May is over; I am thinking of a couple of remarkable years. One year it rained almost every day; usually, late afternoon, early evening and was nice during the day. Another year we had hot, sunny days. It was air conditioner weather (for Seattle that is 80 Degrees) all ten days of it. Then it’s gone.   Rest of the summer is warm if we are lucky and chilly, gloomy and gray when we are not. We keep thinking those few sunny days in May could not have been our entire summer. However, that year – It was.   Many people say I will start something new Next Year; there is always the Next Year. There is always, today, tomorrow, this week, next week, this month, next month and finally next year.  Question is what are you waiting for? Are you starting something or ending something? Reminder stating an S-Corp can be done at any time.   I hear this a lot. I am thinking about this. Thinking and planning is always a good thing. There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between planning forever and stepping out and doing something. Commencing To Begin! Well known phase is “You Can Fix Something” (author unknown) I like chatting with contractors like you and learning about your business. One of the things I learned is that many people who are an “artist at their craft” are not usually as good about the paperwork. That is okay. There is a Difference Between Reasons and Results. The government likes results (numbers, reports) One of the reasons is that there is an illusion that “I am fantastic at “this” so anybody can do “that.” It can’t be that hard; forgetting all of the time, the effort it took to be the master craftsman at what they do.     Another reason is the illusion of time. Bookkeeping should not take very long. I will get to it tomorrow. As weeks and months go by. Tomorrow never comes, and the paperwork piles up from Yesterday and Today.  Tomorrow becomes today, and you still do not have enough time; soon it will be Yesterday. Choosing software based on its ability to sync with an app does not always have the desired results. Garbage in still equals garbage out no matter how many apps you tell to “Just Do It.”   It is unrealistic to expect Software and an App to understand your business and give you proper reports.  If you don’t know what you are doing “How do you expect to be able to tell the software what to do?” Choosing Somebody, anybody to do your bookkeeping can have a negative impact on your Budget. Numerous Tax Accountants try to do the bookkeeping and get lost. My suggestion is to choose someone who specializes in Construction Accounting. I have had prospects tell me that their Neighborhood High School Student, their Nanny, their friend, on a few occasions a condition of being girlfriend was that that person had to do the bookkeeping. Rinse and Repeat Model! Recommend that spouses always be involved in the business.   Your spouse is your partner. Who better to help watch the money.   As a small contractor, the money goes fast enough without any outside help. Ownership (even a small percentage) means that your spouse has check-writing authority with the bank. You are busy but what if something happened to you?      Ownership also allows your spouse to talk to Government Agencies, make payment plans as needed. Without that; each of the agencies could in effect “Pat your spouse on the head like a little kid” and say we don’t have to talk to your spouse because his | her name is not on any of the paperwork (HA, HA) In my opinion, some of them are quite gleeful about it. Remember, they can’t see the crisis from their house. The ability to move money, write a check does not impact their lives in any negative way. We are here to help. Promote owners and spouses have a basic understanding of their numbers. If you are feeling confident in your choice of “Who Does Your Bookkeeping” Fantastic.  We have Customized products to assist on www.FastEasyAccountingStore.com We are continually improving our processes and workflows. The removal of Haringey’s council leader and many of its councillors, together with the jeopardy the council's development deal with Lendlease now finds itself in has been called, by some, a “victory for the people”. But former councillor Charles Wright believes left-wing campaigners have thrown away the only realistic chance the council had to deliver vital new housing. As May’s council elections loom, should developers be concerned?

We broke up on April Fool's Day, so I tookit as a joke. I'm willing to humor her for a month. Every day I buy a can ofpineapple with an expiration date of May 1, because May loves pineapple, andMay 1 is my birthday. I tell myself that if May hasn't come back by the timeI've bought 30 cans, then our love will expire too. When did everything start having an expirationdate? Swordfish expires. Meat sauce expires. Even plastic wrap expires. I'mstarting to wonder: Is there anything in this world that doesn't? 有人说,狗是人类最好的朋友,可是为什么在这个时候,它却不肯跟我分享我的痛苦呢?I finally found my 30th can in aconvenience store. As May 1 begins, I begin to understand. In May's eyes,I'm no different from a can ofpineapple. People say dogs are man's best friend. So how come mine won't sharemy grief now? This must be some kind of record. I ate all30 cans that night. Good thing for me that May wasn't into durian. I feel likegoing out and celebrating. May's probably in bed by now. But what about thatother May? I'm a happy man. I was very talkative whenI was small. But at age five, I ate a can of pineapplethat had expired, and I stopped talking. For that reason, I have very few friends. Ifound it very hard to find work too. I finally decided to be my own boss. Having no capital, the only thing I can dois sneak into other people's shops after hours and run my own business. 房租都已经交了,为什么不做生意呢?I'm not a freeloader. I just think it makessense, since the rent's already been paid, to run the business around theclock. Who says nobody buys pork at 3:00 a.m.? Icame yesterday to buy some, didn't I? If you want to do business, you have totake each customer's needs into account. Buddha said, "If I don't descend intohell, who will?" When you're the boss, you have to be kind, caring andtolerant. You can't just look to your own gain. I know very well there's no such thing as afree lunch, so I always work very hard until the wee hours. I don't make a lotof money, but I'm happy. I love ice cream. When I was little, an icecream truck would stop by my house every day. I was always happy to see it.Once I asked my dad why he didn't drive an ice cream truck. He didn't answer. Ilater found out my mother had been run over by an ice cream truck. I was bornin Taiwan. I came to Hong Kong with my dad when I was five. He worked as anassistant at the Chungking Mansions Hotel. He's rarely talked since my motherdied. No more ice cream, of course. Maybe the fact we're both so quiet explainswhy we've always been close. Sato-san is a real family man. He was afilm director before he opened this place. So he always communicates with hisfamily by making a vid eotape. I'm sure his son must be very happy to receivehis videotapes. Sometimes I want to try the same thing. But I don't know whoI'd send my tapes to. I don't want to end up sending them to myself. Later that night, I discovered Dad secretlywatching the tape. He really enjoyed it. I'm usually very bad at details, but Iremember very well that it was his 60th birthday. He kept laughing as hewatched it. Who knows what he found so funny. But I know he was happy. Old people say taking someone's pictureshortens that person's life. I'm not sure it's true. One evening, Dad wasn'tfeeling well. I took him to the hospital. He passed away a while later. Allthese years, I've always felt like a little boy because of him. He was someoneI could always turn to, someone to solve all my problems. Packing up his stuffthat evening, I felt like a grown-up for the first time. But I don't wanna be agrown-up. I sure wish Dad could always be with me! When I left the hotel, thevideotape was all I took with me. I watched it over and over before I left.Watching Dad cook in the kitchen, I feel very happy. Though I know I'll nevertaste his steaks again, I'll never forget how they tasted.

As May comes to an end, we review our conversations focused on mental health. What were the biggest surprises we learned? Did we change our opinions about "13 Reasons Why"? We also share a listener's new journey with antidepressants after moving to a foreign country, and read a letter about dealing with a bipolar relative whose behavior has taken a complete 180 for the worse. Mental illness doesn't discriminate, and it affects more people than you might think. The pain and shame is often swept under the rug - but just by starting a dialogue around it, we can support those in need of healing. P.S. Thanks to Audible!   The United States with five percent of the world’s population  incarcerates 25% of the world’s prisoners.   Mass incarceration in the United States is well-known.   Today’s guest points out something not as well known.   Overcrowded and underfunded prisons now outsource educational and mental health services to religious groups.   These religious organizations are overwhelmingly run by nondenominational protestant Christians who see prisoners as captive audiences for their message.   Is there a problem here? Tanya Erzen is the author of God in  Captivity:  The Rise of Faith-Based Prison Ministries in the Age of Mass Incarceration.   Laura Everett is a United Church of Christ minister in Boston who for the last eight years has made the bicycle her main vehicle of transportation in all four seasons.   She has found that riding her bike has connected her with her city, expanded her community, activated her on issues of transit justice, and increased her spiritual growth.  She is happier because she rides her bike.     As May is National Bike Month, it is timely to talk with Laura about her book, Holy Spokes: The Search for Urban Spirituality on Two Wheels.Tanya Erzen Interview 00:00-27:18Laura Everett Interview 27:48-53:00

With the visit of Tory Prime Minister, Theresa May, to Government Buildings next week, are we Brexit-ready? As May seeks to re-assure us there's nothing to worry about, sure it's all under control, experts are increasingly warning of a hard Brexit with commentators fearing the government is not doing enough to prepare for the consequences. “But we shouldn't be in a rush to criticise or be side tracked from the real issues facing people in this country,” said INM's Political Correspondent, Niall O'Connor on this week's Floating Voter podcast. “Brexit is not one of them – and perhaps we are ready?” As ever, Group Political Editor, Kevin Doyle and Political Correspondent, Philip Ryan, were also on the panel as they discussed the implications of May's visit and the other main topics in Irish politics this week.
