More perks. Easier access. Trek.fm is made possible by our listeners. For quite some time now we've been looking at ways to better deliver perks and exclusive content to you. We've finally found the solution, and it’s called Patron Zone. But what does that mean? In this episode of Hyperchannel, Trek.fm Executive Producer Norm Lao and Content Manager Will Nguyen (who happen to both have quarters aboard the NX-01), join me to talk about why they first decided to support the network, how they became so involved in what we’re doing, and how we can all take ownership of our fandom. We also give you a rundown of what our new perks system is and what it means for you. LinksPatron Zone: http://patron.zoneTrek.fm Patreon: http://patreon.com/trekfm HostC Bryan Jones GuestsNorman C. Writing Axanar with Bill Hunt. Axanar takes place during war time. Does that mean it isn’t a Star Trek story? Some fans believe that war is incompatible with the Star Trek vision; but a story set against conflict doesn’t have to be all about the fight. In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by Axanar co-writer Bill Hunt to discuss what makes a great tale, why characters are at the heart of any good script, and how they are opening up the story. They also dig into the writing process, and do something else fans love to do: debate canon. Star Wars Aftermath. As Return of the Jedi faded from theaters in late 1983, Star Wars fans entered what would become known as the “Dark Times”. Toys began disappearing from the shelves and slowly Star Wars faded into the cultural zeitgeist. Before faint whispers about Special Editions and Prequels, Heir to the Empire awakened a hunger for Star Wars that had been just under the geek surface for years. It was the first book to be licensed by Lucasfilm to continue the story after Return of the Jedi. Bringing back Luke, Leia and Han as well as introducing us to Mara Jade, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Talon Karrde and a plethora of others who would become staples of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, Timothy Zahn cemented himself as the second coming of George Lucas for fans. The SWEU flourished with varied success over the 23 years it ran, ending when Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced that the EU would be reorganized in the Legends line and a new official run of canon books and comics would be forthcoming. In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by intrepid Rebels Bruce Gibson, Darren Moser and John Mills to talk about Star Wars Aftermath. We discuss the old SWEU and the the new canon, a new hope, characters, small cameos, things we liked, ask a question, the Amazon issue and wrap up with ratings and final thoughts. The Visitor. One of Deep Space Nine's most loved episodes is an enigma in and of itself. Focusing on just one main character, played by someone other than the normal actor, “The Visitor” highlights the power of DS9's concept to tell character-driven stories that transcend the usual Star Trek formula. This tale of Jake Sisko's life after losing his father in a freak accident tugs at the heartstrings for so many viewers—and the intensity of this effect depends on your own life experiences. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Will Nguyen, Phillip Gilfus, and Jeremy Reed to discuss the unusual concept, the performances of Tony Todd and Rachel Robinson, the father-son relationship between Benjamin and Jake Sisko, how Star Trek uses the future time frame, and much more. In our news segment, we discuss the VFX fixes found only in the Netflix version of TNG, and share our thoughts on the diverse and Star Wars-like aliens found in the Abramsverse. Devil's Due. We've all heard the expression “selling your soul to the Devil.” The people of Ventax II took this perhaps a bit too literally when nature started getting restless and a con-artist with a claim to the planet showed up. Who can save the day? Well, Kirk, of course. We mean Picard. This is a TNG episode, after all. Only it isn't. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Daniel Proulx, Jarrah Hodge, and Zachary Fruhling to discuss all things Ardra, how the script for “Devil's Due” was repurposed for TNG from the aborted Phase II series, how societies fall into apocalyptic thinking, whether Picard's role would have worked better with Kirk, and much more. The Trouble with Tribbles. They're the cutest, most prolific aliens in the Star Trek universe—and also the furriest. They are, of course, Tribbles. And at six credits a head—or a body—they also make for good business. At least that's what Cyrano Jones thought … until the critters got hankerin' for some wheat. “The Trouble with Tribbles” remains one of the most beloved Star Trek episodes nearly 50 years after it aired, and in this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Matthew Rushing, Andi VanderKolk, and Zachary Fruhling to discuss why that is. In our news segment, we discuss Nichelle Nichols's upcoming NASA flight, Shatner's mosaic tribute to Leonard Nimoy, and Creation's plans for Star Trek's 50th anniversary in Vegas. The Circle Trilogy, Part 2 of 3: The Circle. Enterprise gets much praise for its unique three-episode storytelling style that defined the fourth season. But a decade earlier, DS9 took the format for a trial run with what has come to be known as “The Circle Trilogy.” Comprising “The Homecoming,” “The Circle,” and “The Siege,” the three-part story remained unique within Star Trek until the NX-01 entered the Borderland. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue their miniseries that takes you through the arc. We discuss the Bajoran preparations for a coup, Sisko's distaste with governmental staffing decisions, and how Vedek Bareil whips out the spiritual pickup lines at just the right moment. The Dominion Invasion, Part 5 of 7: Behind the Lines. Deep Space Nine is often seen as that series about the war. But, in fact, the Dominion War didn't really begin until the end of the fifth season. Squadrons of insect-like Dominion ships pouring out of the wormhole was the harbinger of the greatness and danger to come, and to a unique approach to Star Trek storytelling. The sixth season of DS9 was to begin not only with an unprecedented six-episode arc, but also with the scattering of our heroes and the loss of the space station whose very name is in the title of the show. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue their series that takes you through the Season Six opener. This time around we go behind the lines to explore the changing nature of character relationships in the face of conflict. Sisko gets a desk job, Quark has a change of heart, Odo commits a sin of omission, and Kira gets angrier than ever as we inch closer to the end of the Dominion Invasion/Station Occupation arc. Bounty. Along with the Andorians, the Tellarites are one of the most memorable races from Star Trek that got almost no love after The Original Series went off the air. Even the TOS films merely gave them blink-of-an-eye-cameo attention (in The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country). But never fear! As with their fellow, antennae-donning Federation-founders, Enterprise came to the rescue. Sort of. The first Tellarite the 22nd-century gave us didn't look—nor act—much like those we met in “Journey to Babel.” In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Larry Nemecek, Norm Lao, and Will Nguyen, to discuss our hoofed friends and the episode “Bounty.” We explore the first draft of the script, in which the bounty hunter was not Tellarite, and also delve into what it takes to make a new Star Trek series that meets fan expectations for in-universe connections, yet feels fresh at the same time. In our news segment, we catch up with Larry post-San Diego Comic-Con to talk about the state of Star Trek fandom at conventions, preview plans for Star Trek Las Vegas, and find out what secrets Larry has stashed away in a portal labeled 47. Ant-Man. Marvel's Ant-Man has been in development since 2006 when Edgar Wright was hired to co-write the film and direct. He worked diligently on the movie until creative differences with the Marvel executives forced him to leave his pet project in the hands of Peyton Reed. In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Andi VanderKolk and Michael Schindler to talk about Marvel's Ant-Man. The Circle Trilogy, Part 1 of 3: The Homecoming. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing begin a new miniseries that will take you through the arc, beginning with the return of Bajoran legend Li Nalas. We discuss how the show established a new feel for the series, how tragedy can fuel xenophobia, the evolving relationships between our main characters, whether a legend is more important than the truth, and much more. Richard Hatch. To win a conflict like the Four Years War requires strong leadership, and on the Klingon side, that comes in the form of Supreme Commander Kharn. The old-school, TOS flavor that Kharn brings to Axanar, brilliantly delivered by Battlestar Galactica legend Richard Hatch, has Star Trek fans everywhere talking about how true-to-Trek Axanar is. In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by Richard to talk about the role, why Richard was attracted to the project, and what he hopes to bring to the story. The discussion goes beyond Axanar itself into the realm of why people fight, the toll that conflict takes on leaders, and even why he loves the most recent incarnation of Star Trek. In our news segment, Alec and Rob also bring you an update on the Indiegogo campaign, the Blu-ray, and a recap of San Diego Comic-Con. NOTE: There is an audio glitch around the 46-minute mark. Eye of the Needle. When Voyager first started making its way home from the Delta Quadrant, the crew were full of hope that they would find a way home that was as quick as the one that stranded them. Star Wars: Dark Disciple. When Disney purchased Lucasfilm in the fall of 2012 it marked the end of The Clone Wars. It was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in horror, yet instead of being silenced, they have only continued to speak strongly, with the hashtag #SaveTheCloneWars still a staple of Twitter to this day. Since it's demise, Dave Filoni and Pablo Hidalgo have worked tirelessly to find the best venue for all the displaced stories that were in development. It is no surprise that one of these untold stories has found it's way into a novel. In this supplemental episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing and John Mills dive into the latest edition to the Star Wars canon Dark Disciple by Christie Golden. His Way. When you can start a show with a lengthy cold-open featuring a tuxedo-clad James Darren crooning a jazz standard—and do it on a Cardassian-built space station in the 24th century—you know you've got something special. And that's just what the Deep Space Nine writers did near the end of the show's sixth season with “His Way.” It was the culmination of a game a romantic cat-and-mouse between Odo and Kira, but also solidified a creative freedom that would ensure that DS9's final season would not be hindered by a studio that would make the show square. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Will Nguyen, Sue Kaye, and Jeffrey Harlan to discuss how a light bulb with pretty sweet pipes gave DS9 a special twist, what he meant to the Station's crew, holographic rights, the Odo-Kira relationship, and more. The Dominion Invasion, Part 4 of 7: Sons and Daughters. This time around we delve into family with the episode that focuses on… well… sons and daughters. We discuss the tension between Worf and Alexander, how Worf struggles to be a father to a son who feels abandoned, and how Martok steps in to mentor them both. We also discuss Dukat's decision to bring Ziyal back to the Station, the difficulties she faces, and how her separate relationships with both Dukat and Kira almost bring the two enemies together. Lao to discuss how and why this movement has taken shape—and where it is headed. Adam Nimoy Talks Star Trek, Documentary, and Dad. Perhaps no one better symbolizes Star Trek—and the message behind it—than Leonard Nimoy. Just as fathers influence their children, Leonard Nimoy did this for millions around the world. And in this episode of The Ready Room, recorded on Father's Day, hosts Christopher Jones and Larry Nemecek are joined by someone who knows this better than anyone: Leonard's son, Adam. Currently working on a documentary called “For The Love of Spock,” Adam helps us all remember the incredible talent and influence that his father brought to the world as we discuss the project, his life growing up with a famous dad, his own work directing episodes of TNG, and much more. In our news segment, we share our thoughts on the recent news that Paramount has invited a fan to pitch their idea for a TV series—previously called Star Trek Beyond, but now renamed Star Trek Uncharted. We also check in on Nichelle Nichols's recovery, and Mike Rittenhouse and Noah Butler of the band Five Year Mission drop by to preview their upcoming EP release, “Spock's Brain.” Hosts Christopher Jones and Larry Nemecek Guests Adam Nimoy, Noah Butler, and Mike Rittenhouse Editor and Producer Christopher Jones Executive Producers Matthew Rushing and Norman C. Jurassic World. Over 20 years ago the original Jurassic Park became this highest grossing movie of the year and was followed by two sequels, generally considered mediocre. The Lost World/Jurassic Park III. After the original Jurassic Park dominated 1993 to become that year's highest grossing film it was inevitable that there would be sequels. It took 4 years for Steven Spielberg to return the dinosaurs to the screen in The Lost World and another 4 before Joe Johnston would fulfill his wish to direct Jurassic Park III. Déjà Q. After three appearances as a thorn in Picard's side, Q has been kicked out of the omnipotence club. With only a split second to decide his own fate, Q chose to be made human and sent to the ship of his only friend in the universe: Jean Luc Picard. But was this really a good idea? In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Will Nguyen, Andi VanderKolk, and Daniel Handlin to discuss the third-season TNG episode “Déjà Q.” We take a look at the cruel and unusual punishment meted out by Q's fellow superfriends, how he handles terrifying experiences like getting hungry and falling asleep, and what he learns about being human from Data. David Gerrold talks Star Trek, the Hugo Awards, and more. Rob calls him “legendary” … and he doesn’t like it. But let’s be honest; David Gerrold *is* legendary! Without him, Star Trek wouldn’t be the same. So it’s only fitting that the man who penned “The Trouble with Tribbles” all those years ago is part of Axanar today. If there’s great Star Trek being produced, you can bet David is nearby. In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by David to discuss a wide range of subjects including the controversy surrounding this year’s Hugo Awards, the state of America, the ins and outs of the publishing industry in 2015, and whether or not Star Trek has a future. In our news segment, Alec and Rob talk Parsec Awards and film festival nominations, the hip-hop story behind Prelude to Axanar’s sound mix, deliver updates on the soundtrack and Blu-ray, and fill fans in on the departure of director Christian Gossett. The City On the Edge of Forever. Nearly 50 years after it was written, “City” remains one of the most beloved of all Star Trek episodes. It's the first time travel story that most fans remember (sorry “Naked Time” and “Tomorrow Is Yesterday”) and made screwing with the past cool long before it became Star Trek's go-to trope. But, as a story that really lacks most of what makes TOS what it is, why does this story transcend time? In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Phillip Gilfus, Andi VanderKolk, and Daniel Proulx to seek out the answer. We explore the premise, the time travel mechanism, soft-focus lighting, Edith Keeler's place in time, Kirk's dilemma, and what the story might have been like had it been set in Chicago—as Harlan Ellison originally wrote it. And, along the way, we find all the culture. Or at least most of it. In our news segment, we share our thoughts on Jonathan Frakes's recent comments about Star Trek not returning to television, and we remember the woman who, with her beehive hair and just eight appearances, helped define The Original Series. James Cawley talks Star Trek, Phase II, and Axanar. He’s the one who showed us all the way. Star Trek fan films and independent productions are flourishing today, but more than a decade ago James Cawley set forth as a true pioneer. Star Trek: New Voyages, now known as Phase II, was the first to chart the territory that makes Axanar possible. Cawley truly is the father of Star Trek fan films. In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by James to discuss why he decided to create his own stories, the experience of shooting new Star Trek, what makes a great fan film, what he has planned for the 50th anniversary and beyond, and his advice to Axanar. Profit and Lace Commentary. The sixth season of Deep Space Nine brought us some of Star Trek's best episodes. In fact, it delivered what is considered by many to be the best hour of DS9—and one of the best in the entire franchise—with “In the Pale Moonlight.” But it also gave us what is widely considered to be DS9's worst: “Profit and Lace.” In this episode of The Orb, hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing step out of their usual world of serious discussion and into the Bosom Buddies reality, where Quark is a woman and Doctor Bashir performs gender-altering operations in the name of Ferengi politics. Was there merit to the original idea? What happened on the road from paper to screen that made this episode go so wrong? And which world leader does Grand Nagus Brunt remind us of? The Dominion Invasion, Part 3 of 7: Rocks and Shoals. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing continue their series that takes you through the Season Six opener. This time around we wander out into the sunlight for “Rocks and Shoals” as we discuss the real sense of danger facing our heroes, how loyalties are tested, why we must question the order of things, Kira's awakening, and more.
