I ad Scott Burdick on today. What an interesting man. We had a very long talk and the reason it was so long was we went over a lot of subjects. It wasn't just a podcast about a painter talking about painting. I would say painting was something we discussed the least. We went deep into his belief system, how he sees the world, and how his creativity flows through different fields, not just traditional art, which is what most people know him for. He's also a writer and he works in film, making documentaries. He's so much more than just an artist so it was great to explore that side of him. Scott Burdick is just a really deep, profound person. It's a fun interview. I highly recommend taking the time to listen to both episodes. You can see what life can be like if you let creativity take over. So I had a great time and the two and a half hours flew just like that. So this is part two of Scott Burdick on episode 281 of the Art Dealer Diaries Podcast.

When our faith feels ungrounded, something we are certain of begins to feel uncertain, or someone we hold in high regard lets us down, we experience pain. We begin to lose hope. This is where disillusionment begins. Katie and Mandy sit down with Dr. Alicia Britt Chole to discuss her life's work poured into her newly released book, "The Night is Normal: A Guide Through Spiritual Pain." Alicia describes how even though faith shines best in full sun, it grows depth in the dark. That the roots―and fruits―of spiritual pain are actually an invitation to deep love. She explains "night faith" and how the night is not our enemy, but in fact―the night is necessary. Dr. ABC, a former atheist, an award-winning author and international speaker has messages that have been featured on TBN, Daystar, Propel, Christianity Today, Guideposts, FaithGateway, and "Chicken Soup for the Soul." Often described as a captivating communicator, Alicia speaks, writes, mentors and serves as the founding director of Leadership Investment Intensives, Inc., a non-profit devoted to providing personal soul-care to leaders in the marketplace and church. Her book, "Anonymous: Jesus' Hidden Years and Yours," is highly regarded by leaders and learners around the globe. She holds a doctorate in Leadership and Spiritual Formation (George Fox Evangelical Seminary). With her husband Dr. Barry Jay Chole) of 27 years, she joyfully parents their three extraordinary children in a country home off of a dirt road surrounded by loads of laundry, laughter, and love. Episode 101 of our book read/podcast covering major topics in various fields of psychology moves us into PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION! This summer we are going to discuss religion from a psychological and historical perspective as we investigate the evolutionary origins and modern social systems of religion. In this episode we discuss ATHIESM and why people leave the church. This begins our 4-episode run down on declining ritual and religious nones and why socially people might be leaving their churches. We talk about the modern atheist movement, founders, and muse on why people might turn away from religion. Honestly it's a pretty shallow dive as there is just so much to unpack. Staying along the vein of the church in black history, I decided to venture into the archives and share a conversation with author and filmmaker Jeremiah Camara from 2016. Jeremiah Camara is the director and producer of the documentary film Contradiction: A Question of Faith, which examines the saturation of churches in African American communities coexisting with poverty and powerlessness. Contradiction can be viewed on Amazon Prime Video. Camara is the author of the books Holy Lockdown: Does The Church Limit Black Progress? and The New Doubting Thomas: The Bible, Black Folks & Blind Belief. Camara is also the creator of the widely watched YouTube video series Slave Sermons… a mini-movie series addressing the harmful effects of religion. His latest and upcoming documentary project is titled, Holy Hierarchy: The Religious Roots of Racism in America. Holy Hierarchy… explains how the presumptions of a Supreme Being in colonial America led to precepts and beliefs in supreme human beings and how these beliefs morphed their way into the legal system and ultimately turned racism into an institution. In this episode, we dive into the weeds and try to understand exactly what we each mean when we say something is TRUE. Are we saying something is factual objectively or that it's meaningful and aligns with our human nature? How important is that distinction anyway? This can be a tricky topic in religion and philosophy to navigate and we've found it very valuable to try and be as clear as possible about how we each think about TRUTH and what criteria we consider when determining whether or not something is TRUE. People understand the idea of "morality" and "moral living" in very different ways. Some people would argue that there most be a set of absolutes that guide the conversation, some would argue that inside of every person is the ability to understand what is moral and how it applies to everyday life and actions, and for Scott and I, we are just going to argue. Join us as we discuss what is morality from both a religious and non-religious set of perspectives...
Every single person alive today makes a choice about how to live their life, specifically whether to believe in God and an existence beyond this one or not. Though, rather than being two choices I think it’s best to think of there being four possible choices: 1- Religion 2- Athiesm 3- Transhumanism 4- Apathy Despite convention wisdom, the data says that the first choices is far and away the best.
Long time friend and co-conspirator, Heather Moon has many avenues available to express her creativity. In this episode we are discussing her paintings. We started our friendship back in Rockford Illinois in 2006 when we met at a mutual friends house discussing art, poetry and philosophy. Heather comes from a long line of artists and has always been painting or participating in art in one form or another. It started with her painting alongside her mother, each of them using brushes and paint. She did her first art show in High school with her parents in an art shop window. Her first success was her senior year in high school where she competed and won an art scholarship for college. Heather's experience in the art scene in Rockford has been much more positive as she has seen the growth and vibrancy whereas I saw the derth after the recession of the early 80's. Heather praises the Rockford Area Arts Council for creating the environment of collaboration and support vs competition. (Podcast not supported by RACC, but we support their work.) We take a little trip down memory lane for Cafe Esperanto where we attended poetry readings and drank rum and cokes and smokes clove cigarettes, Djarum to be exact. Heather enjoys the scene now that it is more cooperative because she can get her work critiqued more honestly vs someone just saying oh that's nice and not sharing their true feelings. We discuss our first show together at Phoenix Traders in Rockford. Titled Kimo and The Moon Breakin the Rules. Here is the announcement. This was way back in Sept 2008. Tim gets into a small rant about businesses not sponsoring this show. Currently Heather is preparing for the latest Art Scene in Rockford with a number of totem poles. If you want to see Heather's stuff check out her FB page Viking Moon We delve into Bob Ross and the impact he has on our lives and art. First Fridays in Fredericksburg with he trolley is discussed and Heather promises a visit just for the trolley. We discuss the pricing of art and what it costs to actually cme up with a decent work. We get into an enthusiastic Satanic Seven Question Session with Heather, of special not is question #3 where Heather refuses to tell cashiers at Walgreens that she is an artist, Walgreens, yet another company not sponsoring this podcast, talk to the cashiers about this and make them sponsor us. Heather scores a respectable 7.5 out of a possible 7.0, yes folks another perfection or greater, how the hell did I only score 3. The judges are getting soft. Heather's final project would be a mural that brings harmony to the world, lets see how she does in season 2 with this mural.

In the West, people tend to think of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a strongman dictator – a former KGB man who oppresses his people, censors the media and antagonizes Russia’s neighbors. From the outside, it’s hard for anyone to understand how Putin stays in power, let alone stays popular. And Putin is popular. Pollsters put his approval rating at more than 80 percent. It makes perfect sense if you understand Russia. This week on War College, we sit down with Anne Garrels, a longtime Russia correspondent for NPR. Since the collapse of the USSR, Garrels has spent more and more time in smaller Russian cities and towns, getting to know people who don’t live the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the country's capital. The people of Salem, Massachusetts in the 1600s lived in a culture that accepted the existence of the devil, assorted demons and other evil spirits, including witches, and which encouraged them to blame all misfortune and conflict in the community on these supernatural causes. The people of the modern day West live in a culture that largely accepts the existence the Patriarchy, Rape Culture, and Cultural Misogyny, and which encourages them to blame all misfortune and conflict in the community--from rape to domestic violence to the pay gap to male-only conscription--on these ethereal and unfalsifiable "social constructs". The Salem witch trials began with accusations against an opposing camp--a rival family in the community engaged in a long-standing feud with the family of the accused. The flurry of recent sexual misconduct accusations in the Atheist/sceptic community essentially began with an invitation to continue a conversation over coffee, proffered by an unnamed man in an elevator. That invitation was ground zero for the splintering of that community into two rival camps--one which embraced scepticism and the rejection of any notion of an invisible, unmeasurable superior power that rules all our lives, and one which embraced dogmatism. A witch hunt has begun in the sceptic community--one side asking for evidence, and the other demanding blind faith. Who will prevail? God knows...
Tonight we have as our guest Justin Vacula, atheist and blogger who is famous for his criticism of Athiesm+, a movement that purports to be about social justice coming from an atheist perspective, but in actuality is a feminist co-option scheme. AVFM News interviewed Justin on Saturday the 18th during the Women in Secularism2 conference held in Washington D.C. which hosted many speakers Justin had criticized for their dogmatic views on gender and sexism in the atheist community. We will be talking about the conference and the fallout from a highly controversial speech given by Ronald Lindsay, CEO of the Center for Inquiry, the organization that hosted the event Tonight is going to be a fun opportunity for atheists from both within and outside of the MRM to call in and discuss Atheism+, feminism and Vacula's treatment of both. The show starts at 8pm Central Time on May 21st. That's 2am in London on May 22nd.
In the first episode of the podcast, we talk about atheism, censorship, conspiracies, globalization, nuclear energy, and other random tangents.
The gang chases the Space Shuttle Endeavor through South LA, Lar's gets trapped in the old internet, a North Korean lathe wins a North Korean labor award, and atheists are winning hearts and minds.
