The Nightmare Sequence, featuring poetry by Omar and illustrations by Safdar, is a searing response to the atrocities committed by Israel and its allies in Gaza and beyond since October 2023. Born of collective suffering and despair, the book interrogates the position of witness: the terrible and helpless distance of vision, the impact of being exposed to violence of this scale on a daily basis, and what it means to live in a society that is actively participating in the catastrophic destruction of Arabs and Muslims overseas. Omar is a poet and writer born in Western Sydney to Lebanese and Turkish Muslim migrants. He is the acclaimed author of the novel Son of Sin and three poetry collections, including The Lost Arabs, which won the 2020 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Poetry. Safdar Ahmed is an award-winning artist, writer, musician and cultural worker. As a critical care clinician, do you consider yourself well-versed in comfort care? Do you consider yourself well-rehearsed in having the discussions leading up to the patient's or family's decision to implement it? This concept may be outside your comfort zone, especially if you work in emergency medicine. But the fact of the matter is, from the prehospital environment all the way to the ICU, we are provided many opportunities for implementation of this type of care plan. Amber, Jenn, and Emma discuss their experience with "Hospice/Comfort Care" measures. One of us skipped over it, the other was not given a choice and the last of us chose it! In this episode we discuss our vastly different experiences and what lead us to make the decisions we did. We discuss the importance of titration of the FIO2 for your child. Disclaimer: "Amber here, in this episode we do discuss death, I want to put a quick disclaimer that my ease of using the word "dead" in the episode came from my own healing of trauma. I was at a beautiful retreat where I had the honor of hearing Bethany Bernard play her newest album. She discussed, there is a terrible stigma around using the words "death, and dead." It took me 9 months to be able to say that my own daughter had died and not using that verbiage for me, minimized her story."Our Website and Social's are listed Below!https://www.extratolove.org/https://www.facebook.com/ExtraToLove/https://www.instagram.com/Extratolove/
The Dobbs decision at the U.S. Supreme Court last June transformed the models used by the pro-life movement, abortion providers, and those who favor access to abortion. We have reached out to numerous entities affected in this first full year since Roe v. Wade was overturned and remanded back to state legislatures to set laws, restrictions and funding for each state and D.C. Jim Harden, director of Compass-Care in western and central New York joined Family Life this week on the radio and online for "Faith Under Fire". Harden offers his reflections on the past year, as well as with the very first-hand experience of having one Comfort-Care facility set on fire before the Dobbs decision was officially announced. He expresses frustration that federal law enforcement to date has not arrested any suspects, even the government agents have numerous interactions with few pro-life advocates across the country.

SummaryWhat is your plan for medical care as you get older? Most people don't know. While 87% of people say they want to die at home, just under half of people do. In this episode we discuss goals of care, comfort care, palliative care, hospice, code status and more. Morbidity and MortalityMedical errors are the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States (sorry healthcare team…its true). As people get older, sicker, and frailer, their chances of being hurt by healthcare increase dramatically. At some point for everyone, the benefits of aggressive medical care are outweighed by the risks. StoryIn 1900 the average life expectancy in the United States was 47.3 years. By 2019, life expectancy had increased to 78.8 years. This was largely due to public health measures like clean water, lifesaving antibiotics, and vaccines. However, life expectancy is now trending down-ward. Key Points1. Comfort care is when the main goal of care is person's quality of life2. Palliative care is a medical discipline that helps people cope mentally, physically, and spiritually with severe illness. People on aggressive medical and comfort care can utilize palliative care.3. Code Status concerns a patient's wishes when they are dead. It has nothing to do with their medical care while alive.4. Hospice is a program centered around comfort care for those persons expected to live < 6 months. It is under-utilized and our current medical incentives push people away from it. Susan Miciotto Marchand was born in Louisiana, and grew up moving back and forth between LA and TX, landing in Baton Rouge in 1980. She is a 1988 LSU graduate, as well as a 1994 BR General School of Nursing graduate. After a 15-year nursing career, Susan became the Co-owner of a fitness studio called Yoglates, which combines Yoga, Pilates and calisthenics. The discipline of Yoglates has been in existence for 20 plus years, and Susan is very proud to be a co-owner of the only Yoglates studio in the region. Susan is happily married to Matthew Marchand, her husband of 29 years, and is the mother of 3 near-adult daughters. Her family has always been her priority, and nursing and owning her own business have given her the flexibility to allow her to continue focusing on them throughout the years, while building careers that were important and essential to her. Community involvement includes the support of many businesses and events in BR, such as the Bella Bowman Foundation supporting Comfort Care for families of children with pediatric cancers, food drives supporting the Baton Rouge Food Bank, and Companion Animal Alliance pet adoption yoga classes. Yoglates has donated thousands of dollars to local charities and events over the past 11 years. Susan’s proudest professional moments include obtaining an ASPAN certification during her time as an RN, which is a Post-Anesthesia RN certification. She also enjoyed her time as a Surgical ICU nurse, and had many brilliant female mentors in nursing school and in her 15 year nursing career. As a business owner, her proudest professional moments include celebrating a 10 year anniversary in the current Yoglates location amidst a surplus of Boutique Fitness Studios in the Baton Rouge area. Similarly, Susan counts her business, Yoglates, being honored by LSU as a Top 100 Fastest Growing Tiger owned business in 2018, an incredible accomplishment. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/freeman-means-business/support
