On this week's show The Yorkshire Post's chief football writer Stuart Rayner joins host Mark Singleton to discuss life in Leagues One and Two for Yorkshire's clubs, plus looking at England's contrasting performances against Ukraine and Scotland during the recent international break. In League Two, how do Bradford City breathe more life into their stuttering start to the 2023-24 campaign, can Doncaster Rovers turn a corner in terms of a run of results that has left them rooted to the foot of the table and are Harrogate Town destined for another relegation battle, or is a brighter future in store for Simon Weaver and his players. In League One, there is time to look at Barnsley's campaign so far, one that – on the back of two wins – has left them just outside the play-off places under new boss, Neil Collins.

Host Carl Jones is joined by comedian Pete Selwood and editor of onthepontyend.com Ian Wilkinson to continue the countdown of the all-time Premier League table with Barnsley in 49th place. We'll deep dive into the 1997/98 season as well as covering how Barnsley reached the top flight for the first time in their history. We'll also cover the near misses since and the rather suspect vote back in 1919 that prevented them from making their maiden top flight appearance over a century ago. It's a controversy that still cuts deep in this corner of South Yorkshire, as we discover. We'll also put a Premier League Barnsley XI into the archives, Play Your Apps Right returns and the lads share their thoughts on who the Premier League's greatest Austrian player of all-time is.  Enjoyed the show? Please subscribe, leave us a 5* review and pass the pod to anyone who you think will enjoy it. After graduating from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Dan joined the British Army in 1996. Following training at Sandhurst, Dan was commissioned into The Parachute Regiment. He subsequently deployed to Kosovo, Northern Ireland, briefly to Sierra Leone, and on numerous occasions to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he served as a Company Commander with the Special Forces Support Group. In 2011, Dan was elected as the MP for Barnsley Central – becoming the first person since the Second World War to resign a commission to contest a parliamentary by-election. In the House of Commons, Dan has sat on the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy and the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, and held several shadow ministerial roles. He also served as the Labour Party's lead for the 100th anniversary of the First World War commemorations and passed a Private Members' Bill that changed the law on organ donation. In 2018, Dan was elected the inaugural Mayor of South Yorkshire. As Mayor, he was responsible for economic regeneration, public transport and adult education across South Yorkshire. He stepped down from role at the recent local elections.Dan is a trustee of the Speaker's Parliamentary Placement Scheme, a social mobility programme designed to widen access to parliament by offering paid internships to those who may not have access via traditional routes. In his spare time, Dan enjoys keeping chickens, walking, and running in the countryside, supporting his local youth choir and Barnsley FC. He has completed the Marathon des Sables, has run eight London marathons to raise money for Cancer Research UK and his local hospice, and is a big supporter of Parkrun. He lives in Barnsley with his wife, three children and their dog. He published his book, Long Way Home in 2020.Dan Jarvis's top leadership tip is that times can and will be tough. Love, life and death, and all the stuff in between, will present challenges, and opportunities. But if you keep calm, keep going and, where you can, keep a smile on your face, it's remarkable what can be achieved. And if all else fails, put the kettle on and have a hot brew. It always helps. The mural of footballer Marcus Rashford which was defaced with racist graffiti after England lost the Euro 2020 final last night was part of Withington Walls, a community street art project in the suburbs of southern Manchester. Its head, Ed Wellard, discusses the art work, the British-based Vietnamese street artist Akse who created it, and the role art can play in the community. Late last week Front Row asked Ian McMillan, poet in residence at Barnsley FC, to write a poem in response to the European Cup Final. He talks to John Wilson about his approach to this tricky commission this evening, and reads his poem, 'This Sporting Life'. We start a new series today exploring current debates within book publishing, beginning with a look at the gender split in current literary tastes. Is it harder for young male writers to get published, win prizes and make a splash now? And if so, after millennia of male dominance, does it matter? John talks to Nesrine Malik who is judging the Women's Prize for Fiction this year, and novelist and publisher Luke Brown. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Jerome Weatherald

Orlando City is undefeated no more after a tough 2-1 loss at Red Bull Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Lions didn’t play well in the middle and dug a deep hole, then nearly climbed out of it thanks to Silvester van der Water. The rally came up a bit short, and the team can now concentrate on getting healthy, welcome back Nani and (eventually) Daryl Dike), and start preparing for another go-round with Toronto FC. We break down Orlando City’s loss to the New York Red Bulls, choose our Man of the Match selections, and worry aloud about Chris Mueller’s form. We also discuss the news that Barnsley FC is not buying Daryl Dike’s rights and the big striker is expected to rejoin Orlando City after the international break, which is welcome news. The Orlando Pride kept rolling with their third straight win, making it four matches in a row without a loss and you get to hear me find out in real time that the goal in Sunday’s 1-0 victory was changed from Marta to Alex Morgan at some point while I was driving home Tuesday. The Pride have a big match coming up against the second-place Washington Spirit this weekend as the NWSL’s top two teams thus far will square off in the nation’s capital. Can the Pride keep it going? Following Pride talk, we discuss the USMNT’s loss at Switzerland and why neither of us are freaking out about it. Our mailbag is curious as to who Orlando City will sign to replace Dike and we get to have some funsies with one of the questions. Listeners also want to know how we’d feel about Jozy Altidore in purple. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 248 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City’s zero in the loss column is gone, so...mission accomplished, MLS DisCo! 34:55 - The Pride are on a roll and there are a lot of reasons why you should come to the stadium to see them. 1:06:49 - It’s mailbag time and this week we have no key match-ups or predictions as Orlando City is off until late June. Orlando City set a new MLS club best by going unbeaten in five matches to start the season with Sunday night’s 1-0 win at D.C. United. It wasn’t the prettiest win, but sometimes that’s what you need to do on the road. The Lions looked lively in the first half but after Mauricio Pereyra’s early goal just couldn’t find that final touch to double the lead, leaving the game there for United to take. D.C. came out flying in the second half and Oscar Pareja made a tactical change in an effort to put more defenders in the way, hoping for a clean outlet to hit the hosts in transition. That never materialized, but the defending was superb, as City allowed only 13 shots and just one on target. Dave and I break down the game, give our Man of the Match selections, and laud the play of that back line. We also had a fun chat about Hernan Losada’s salty post-match comments, which do well to deflect some of the criticism that could be leveled against he and his team, but also just is dumb on the surface. Plus, full houses are coming soon to Exploria Stadium! Is it too soon for that? Should there be special sections for vaccinated folks? We discuss. We are joined this week by a pair of guests. The first was Chris Gates from the Daily Norseman, the SBN site covering the Minnesota Vikings. Chris fills us in on what kind of owners the Wilf family have been in the Twin Cities, which might lend some clues as to what we might expect when they take over Orlando City. Our second guest is Mitchell Tierney from Waking the Red. Mitchell helps us preview Saturday night’s home match against Toronto FC — the third straight opponent the Lions didn’t face in 2020. We thank Mitchell for his insight into the Reds and what “Orlando’s other team” may do Saturday night. The Pride kicked off their season at home against the Washington Spirit and they rescued a 1-1 draw in a match that was evenly played but it seemed like Orlando wasted some golden chances. We’ve got some Marta talk and we also look ahead to the Pride’s upcoming trip to play the North Carolina Courage. We’ve got an update from Daryl Dike’s loan spell as his Barnsley FC side opened up its promotion playoff run. We also had to discuss the Columbus Crew coming to their senses and backing their rebrand way the heck up. Plus, a call-up for an Orlando Homegrown and we dive once again into our mailbag to answer your questions. Then we get to our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Toronto FC this weekend. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 246 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City wins on the road for the first time in 2021 and we’re talking about what the Lions did right and wrong. Plus, our MotM, a soon-to-be-full Exploria, and more. 35:34 - Our first guest knows a lot more about the Wilf family owning his team than we do, so we ask him about it. 48:55 - A Toronto FC preview from a guy who knows the Reds better than we do, and he tells us everything we need to know, so someone just has to get this podcast to Oscar Pareja and the Lions will be set! 1:05:30 - The Orlando Pride earn a point in the season opener, Marta’s play so far in 2021, Daryl Dike’s playoff run, the Crew walk back their rebrand, another fun mailbag, and, finally, our key match-ups and score predictions. We recap quite a bit on Episode 38 of the Stars & Stripes FC Podcast! First, we recap the United States Men’s National Team’s 7-0 destruction of Trinidad and Tobago. Which players had standout performances and what does it mean for the USMNT and U-23s? After that, we recap a busy final day to the European winter transfer window, touching on a few key moves. Most notably, Daryl Dike’s loan to Barnsley FC would not have happened if he didn’t play in the USMNT friendly the night before! After the break, SheBelieves Cup is around the corner! We take a look at the USWNT roster that will take on Canada, Brazil, and Argentina this month. We also look at the training roster and what Coach Vlatko Andonovski’s thinking was behind having Emily Fox, Jaelin Howell, and Mallory Pugh in camp when they aren’t playing. The Mane Land: for Orlando City SC fans

This week’s show starts with a little United States Men’s National Team talk as the Yanks visited Exploria Stadium with four Lions on the roster. Three of those Orlando City players got in the game on a night when the USMNT demolished the overmatched Soca Warriors. The U.S. is unbeaten and untied at Exploria, with the men and women each posting 4-0-0 records so far on Orlando City’s home grounds. The big news out of Orlando City this week was Daryl Dike’s loan to Barnsley FC. We discuss what that short-term loan means for both Dike and the club, and where it leaves the current roster. Of course, without a season the loan is a moot point, so we also discuss the current status of the collective bargaining agreement talks between MLS and the MLSPA and how dumb a work stoppage would be for the league. The Orlando Pride opened preseason camp on Monday and we break down the current roster and the recent trade that brought more quality to the midfield, even if it did cost Orlando original Pride player Kristen Edmonds. We take a look at various position groups and where a signing might be needed, and chat a little about the SheBelieves Cup call-ups. This week’s mailbag had questions about what shows to binge watch, which 2020 Lion we’d replace in the starting lineup, and how Dike will fit in at Barnsley. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything —you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 231 went down: 0:15 - Poor Benji Michel missed a rare opportunity at a USMNT debut in his hometown on his club grounds. We sympathize, but it was a huge night for the Yanks overall. Also, Dike’s going away but not forever. 27:26- WoSo talk surpasses men’s soccer talk in total running time as we get into the latest Pride happenings prior to and with the opening of preseason training. 57:23 - Our mailbag is good again! A look at the life and times of the man Sir Michael most looked up to. It started in the shadow of the pithead in a South Yorkshire mining village and ended up in tears before an audience of millions. Michael Parkinson's relationship with his late father John William was, and remains, a family love story overflowing with tenderness and tall tales of sporting valour, usually involving Yorkshire cricket or Barnsley FC. However, it was the overwhelming grief which poured out of Michael when Piers Morgan pressed him about John William in a television interview - four decades after the death of the father he encapsulated as 'Yorkshireman, miner, humorist and fast bowler' - that convinced one of the outstanding broadcasters and journalists of our time to delve deeper into the dynamics of their lives together. Co-written with his son Mike, this affectionate and revealing memoir explores the influences which shaped John William, Michael and succeeding generations of Parkinsons. The journey leads them from the depths of a Yorkshire coal mine, via the chapel, pub and picture-house, to a spot behind the bowler's arm at Lord's and the sands at Scarborough. While Like Father, Like Son conveys a powerful sense of time and place, it is wit, insight and, above all, enduring love which shine through its pages.
