798: Cami Prada on Being a Beginning FarmerA Journey to a more fulfilling lifestyle. In This Podcast: What if it was time for you to leave your corporate life and jump into a life of farming? Well that is exactly what Cami Prada did. She left her life in Miami to start anew in a small town in North Carolina. Now she works at a farm that has an honor stand and with the bee lady working her booth at the farmers market...and is finding life much more fulfilling. Our Guest: Rooted from the vibrant city of Miami Beach, the concept of farming was a distant echo in Cami's upbringing. It wasn't until adulthood that the notion of 'sustainability' ignited her passion for Earth stewardship. In May 2022, she made a BIG move to the Small quaint town of Burnsville, NC. After a corporate layoff, she found solace and purpose as a farmer at a local farm that doubles as an Honor Produce Stand. Embracing the rural lifestyle, she also lends a hand to a beekeeper friend, sharing the golden sweetness of local honey at her community farmers market. As she delves into the rich tapestry of this new chapter, her aspirations include cultivating the land, fostering community bonds, and dreaming of a self-sufficient future. This is just the beginning of a fulfilling journey towards a more conscious and connected existence.Book Recommendation: Ishmael by Daniel QuinnVisit www.UrbanFarm.org/CrazyAboutMyPlanet for the show notes and links on this episode! This is the first episode of a new six-part series focused on the one thing everyone in our network – from farmers to policymakers, organizers to corporate partners – seems to be laser focused on right now: the 2023 Farm Bill. We're joined by Billy Hackett, Policy Specialist for the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC), for a high-level overview of the farm bill. We know... 1,000 pages of federal policy, how exciting, right?! But we're here to convince you that this bill is the most important piece of legislation shaping the future of food in this country, and that it affects all of us.The farm bill influences what you eat every day, who grows your food and how they grow it, what food you can afford to buy, and even what you put in your gas tank. And we want you to know that you can help us make sure that this bill supports all of us–our families, our communities, and the next generation of farmers and ranchers.  Find all the resources that Jessica and Billy mentioned during their conversation on Young Farmers' 2023 Farm Bill webpage and sign-up for NSAC's weekly newsletter here.Sign up for our One Million Acres for the Future campaign today by texting LAND to 40649 or by visiting p2a.co/land.Become a National Young Farmers Coalition member at youngfarmers.org/join for only $1/year.Produced by Jessica Manly and Evan Flom.Edited by Hannah Beal.Original podcast art by SJ Brekosky.

Today we talk with Charley Jordan about making the move from the military into farming. Charley is the owner/operator of Jordan Farms, in Indian Mound, Tennessee. After serving nearly 30 years in the Army, flying Chinook helicopters with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Charley retired in 2017 and found a new mission in agriculture and has devoted himself to helping other veterans and beginning farmers find their purpose in agriculture. Charley was also in the inaugural cohort of a horticulture therapy certificate program launched at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.Jordan Farms specializes in fresh-cut flowers, forest-grown mushrooms, and other farm-fresh products. Charley is a nationally featured advocate for veterans transitioning to agriculture and the mental health benefits of therapeutic horticulture. We think it would be great if we had more farmers in more communities; and at the same time, with over a million people in the active-duty military, when they decide to leave the military, veterans are an important demographic that could contribute to the numbers of farmers. In Shop Talk with Neversink Farm, we chat about new tools, old tools, how they can benefit your farm and tips to use them successfully with Conor Crickmore of Neversink Tools, which manufactures tools for farmers. In this episode of Shop Talk, we discuss soil blocks, what makes them such a good medium for seedlings, their difficulties, and the alternatives with the same benefits and fewer drawbacks, such as Winstrip trays and paper chain pots. Thanks to our collaborator on this podcast Neversink Farm. After seeing fields of storage crops including onions, potatoes and sweet corn we hop out of the truck and step into the barn where I asked Justin about how he got into farming, what fulfills him in this career and advice he'd give for those just starting out. He describes how he's structured the business to his personality, and to align with his goals of the farm.
