Clare Balding is celebrating a listener's birthday today. Not something we've done before, but when we heard that Lynda Pettit was marking her 60th birthday by walking 60 different routes with 60 different people, and that the idea was partly inspired by Ramblings, well we just had to join in, especially as it's Clare's 25th year on Ramblings (double celebrations!). Lynda and several friends took Clare for a hike on the Stoney Path walk in the Pentland Hills near West Linton, about 20 miles south of Edinburgh. They met outside The Gordon Arms Hotel on the A702 and went up into the southern Pentlands. It's a route that takes in the Old Roman road that heads up to Edinburgh; Stoney Path, also known as Thieves Road, an ancient droving track used by cattle reivers herding stolen livestock through the hills; and Baddinsgill Reservoir. They also ascended Mount Maw, catching sight of a beautiful cloud inversion on the way. Views from the top stretched around 80 miles to a snow-capped Ben Lomond, Scotland's most southerly Munro. As conservatives and leftists get their asses kicked in the West and liberalism, while not particularly popular at the ballot box is as dominant as ever as the culture becomes increasingly totalitarian, are we at a kind of Jacobite moment? In today's episode this is what we argue. That the protracted line of revolutions since 1517 - 1688, 1789 etc has left a significant part us in internal exile. So as mental emigrees we review the state of things in the summer of 2024 as well as very apparent the longing for a Prince beyond the sea. By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.Chorus:O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,But me and my true love will never meet again,On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.'Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen,On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond,Where in soft purple hue, the highland hills we view,And the moon coming out in the gloaming.ChorusThe wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring,And in sunshine the waters are sleeping. But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving.Chorus Hosted on Acast. The designation recognises the efforts of the community to protect and promote the island's starry skies and nocturnal environment. Isle of Rum Community Trust Director Fliss Fraser joins Mark and Rachel live to tell them more about Rum's dark skies and the benefits the nocturnal environment brings to us and to the natural world. The forest trails near Aberfoyle in the Trossachs have become increasingly popular in recent years for mountain bikers and gravel riders keen to get away from busy roads. The waymarked trails, in the shadow of Ben Lomond, have been named Gravelfoyle. Now, in a bid to attract more people to them a pilot called Parkride has been taking place; a bit like Parkrun but replacing running with biking. Alongside it parents can drop off their kids at ‘Bairns On Bikes' where professional coaches teach youngsters basic and more advanced bike skills. Linda Sinclair went along to find out more.Claudia Zeiske is a long distance walker and she has been walking from mountain to sea across Aberdeenshire. Mark met up with Claudia at the end of her journey at a place called Gadle Braes in Peterhead in what was a very blustery day to find out why exactly she had undertaken the walk Lucy MacDonald's an artist who uses local fleeces and plants in her work. After she's sorted through the fleece and given it a wash, she will put it through a carding machine before spinning it and weaving it. Rachel watched her in action at her studio in Aberdeen.

In this week's episode we're taking a long overdue dive into the sophomore album from California young gun Jesse Daniel: "Rollin' On" (2020). Co-produced by A-class steel man Tommy Detamore, this album rips right out of the gate. An all-original project, this collection is packed with punchy, catchy and relatable writing and rarely lets up on the high-energy twang - the reaction to "Rollin' On" reflects how well put together this album is. Indeed, excellent sales and streaming stats got the attention of plenty of industry players, but Daniel remains proudly independent on his own imprint Die True Records. With harmony vocals and several co-writes from Daniel's partner Jodi Lyford, highlights are plentiful: the colourful story of "Champion"; the clever metaphor of "Mayo And The Mustard"; a road-trip in song on "Tar Snakes" and the wistful ode to Daniel's hometown of Ben Lomond, CA in "Son Of The San Lorenzo". One full listen will be all it takes to understand why "Rollin' On" was at or near the top of so many "Best Of 2020" lists. Simply superb.

Did you happen to catch the commercials for Paramount during the Super Bowl. Paramount owns CBS these days… and the commercials feature all the stars The Star Trek Characters… Beavis and Butthead… and the Survivor guy trudge through biting wind as they hike a snow-covered mountain. The imagery is not lost… they’re hiking the mountain from the Paramount logo that you’ve been seeing your whole life. Can you picture it? snowy peak… surrounded by white stars… So let me ask you … does the mountain in the Paramount logo familiar? It should if you’ve ever driver I-15 north… through Ogden. The man who designed the logo was William Wadsworth Hodkinson…who built one of the first movie theatres in Ogden in 1907. Then Salt Lake … then he went to the west coast… and when he needed a new logo for his Paramount Picture Company… he drew the peak he remembered from childhood in Pleasant View. The majestic… craggy 10k peak of Ben Lomond… which your staring straight at… when you’re driving north past ogden. The Paramount logo is a loose representation of a local mountain and you probably never knew. Even though the logo’s been arround for 106 years… based on a Utah mountain ….that’s been around for a few more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of the Powerful talk ever I have listened in this episode, when I talked with Mark, he delivered his life story of his struggle with his Diabetes – 1 from age of 14. Despite of all the challenges and difficulties, hardship from own body to the embarrassing moments in middle of the society, lead him to the deep creek of the sorrowfulness. But his story turned around the courage, inspiration, desperate desire to live life, and overcome and transfer difficulties into the opportunities. While he got two organs from the donor and got new life, he got his first kid through IVF, it was not simple for him because it was failed before it 3 times. He has 2 children in his life and have a healthy life. But one moment please, after getting donation of kidney and pancreas, he started to do charity for the people for organ donation. He became the Ambassador of the NHS Blood and Transplant organization, government giant in UK, and inspired thousands for the organ donation. He puts that down to exercise. He started by walking a few blocks around his home and then went further around the housing estate where he lived and now does about 15 or 20 miles a month. He's used that love of walking to raise money for charity too. In 2015 he did the Three Peaks Challenge for Kidney Care UK. But those are not his only walking achievements – he has climbed Ben Lomond in Scotland and completed the 88-mile-long Hadrian's Wall walk in six days; he also climbed Mount Snowden two years after his transplant. All of his journeys, dinners and walks were for the charity events and he raised more than 3000 Euros from his last events. His life inspiration story is for all of us to get motivated and enjoy our life's beautiful moments even in tough time. A vigil has been held for a Santa Cruz County deputy who was killed on Saturday. People gathered outside the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office Sunday to honor Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller. 38-year-old Gutzwiller was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Saturday, when police say he was ambushed along with another deputy. A call came in early in the afternoon that said a vehicle had been spotted near Boulder Creek. The caller said they saw guns and bomb making materials in the van. When the officers arrived, the vehicle had left and was later found at a home in Ben Lomond. When the deputies began investigating that location, police say they were ambushed with gunfire and multiple improvised explosive devices. Gutzwiller was shot and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The other deputy was either shot or struck with shrapnel. He is being treated and officials say they are hopeful he will recover. Sheriff Jim Hart spoke at a news conference hours after the death of

Part 1 of a two-part program about the increasing use of consciousness-expanding substances, many of them illegal, for health and personal spiritual growth. People around the world are using these consciousness-expanding substances, also called psychedelics or hallucinogens, to treat conditions ranging from allergies and anxiety to alcoholism and addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many other problems. Some people use these materials regularly in low doses to enhance their everyday life, or they may use them more occasionally in larger doses for a more profound experience. This is a topic that has gotten more attention these days, due in part to Michael Pollan's recent book entitled How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence, which includes accounts of his own personal experiments with LSD, psilocybin and DMT. I thought that now would be a good time to dig into my trove of recordings and play you some that I've made on the topic of psychedelic drugs over the years between 1976 when Timothy Leary came to speak at my college, and just a couple of weeks ago when I recorded an interview with a friend who was under the influence of LSD at the time. In this episode I'm going to start out by playing you part of a recording that I made in 1991 of a talk given by Terence McKenna at the California Institute for Integral Studies in San Francisco. Terence was a visionary explorer and writer, and a singularly engaging speaker. He wrote books like The Archaic Revival, Food of the Gods, and True Hallucinations, all of which I own and recommend. He also happened to have gone to high school with one of my best friends in San Francisco, so I'm lucky to have gotten to know Terry personally a little bit too, and I treasure a letter that he sent me a short while before he died. After Terence McKenna, we're going to hear from Rick Doblin, the President of an organization called MAPS (which stands for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies). Rick will talk about that organization's work to bring currently illegal psychedelic materials into the light of science so that they can be studied properly and used to help people. You'll hear Rick speaking to doctors, therapists, researchers and other members of MAPS at a MAPS conference in San Jose, CA in 2010, and then you'll hear Rick in conversation with me, at MAPS' former headquarters in Ben Lomond, CA, where I met him for the first time. In the next episode, episode 24, which is also available now, we'll continue this psychedelic journey and you'll hear my brief chat with psychologist Ralph Metzner, one of the early LSD research pioneers at Harvard University along with Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert (aka Ram Das), Huston Smith, and Andrew Weil. Ralph talked with me just before going onstage at the New Living Expo in San Francisco in 2012. After that I'm going to play you a short bit of a recording of Timothy Leary lecturing at my college, UC San Diego, in 1976 or 1977, talking about psychedelic drugs, pleasure, and human destiny. After that we'll hear Dr. Andrew Weil at that same MAPS conference in 2010, talking about how he cured some of his own allergies using LSD, and then we'll listen to a personal conversation I had with Dr. Weil around 2012, about the mind-body connection and how consciousness-expanding substances can play a role in optimizing that connection. Finally, I'll have a chat with a friend here in Tucson Arizona, who, as we talked, was under the influence of LSD. He tells about the subtle ways that it is influencing his perceptions and his engagement with his art-making. The Ben Lomond Hotel is located in the Historic Downtown of Ogden, Utah. This is one of the last three “Grand Hotels” in Utah that still operates as a hotel. Built in the latter part of the Victorian Era, the hotel has changed over time. The original five stories now rise to eleven. Ogden was a major railroad junction and brought people from all over. And while a hotel is meant to be a place of comfort, the Ben Lomond seems to be a place of death and this has lead to stories of strange happenings. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Ben Lomond Hotel. The Moment in Oddity is suggested by listener Lisa Nielsen and features Holger Danske and This Day in History is by April Rogers-Krick and features Women Fired Over Turkey Trot. Our location was suggested by listeners Jon Mueller and Dean Carrington and our Researcg=h Assistant is Kristin Swintek. Quilting needles in hand (just listen, you'll get it), the Spin Team get to a controversial topic once again - this time discussing racial diversity with author Trillia Newbell. Trillia's perspective is a unique and helpful one, as she gets into issues not yet talked about on Mortification of Spin. Especially as Christians, we need to remember to treat other humans beings, created in the image of God, as brothers and sisters. What are practical steps that we can take to help create racially diverse churches? Can Aimee really quilt with nunchuck needles? What will Mrs. Trueman think of Carl's "feminine side?" If you enjoyed todays Mortification of Spin then you might enjoy a free copy of Trillia Newell's book United: Captured by God's Vision for Diversity.WinnersJason D., Haltom City, TXBeth H., Laceys Spring, ALRenee B., Oklahoma City, OKCharles B., Hattiesburg, MSAndrew F., Ben Lomond, CA
