Web3bridge is focused on building a sustainable web3 economy in Africa through remote and onsite web3 development training, supporting web3 developers and startups, and lowering barriers to entry into the Web3 ecosystem. The program runs an intensive 8-week remote learning plan for beginners in tech-focused on teaching HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as the main Web3 cohort program (in-house boot camp), which spans 16 weeks and is aimed at training Web2 developers within and outside Africa to become blockchain developers, at little or no cost. After the training, Ayodeji works with the rest of the team in helping and ensuring that the developers secure their first blockchain developer roles and together with his team, they also work to ensure that the developers succeed and deliver optimal results for their employers. Ayodeji was the pioneering lead of Enterprise Solutions at Hydro Labs where he created and established processes for the department to onboard partnerships and interact with developer communities. He was previously the community lead at Ethereum Push Notification Service (EPNS) a blockchain communications and notification protocol, backed by 34+ VCs with a valuation of over $130m. No, this is not me advertising an open position. These are the kinds of job adverts I'm seeing in my inbox these days. The salary ranges may be more realistic than they were three months ago, but the job descriptions have expanded to the point where they are longer than my resume. And there are probably only ten people on the planet who could both do the job, and who would want to. You can listen to the episode, or read this summary: Offering half a million dollars for a job that requires the applicant to a) have spent a decade researching and hacking away at blockchain programming, so they can b) help you recruit a team of blockchain developers, and then manage them, is going to be hard to fill. Because people who have done the former, are probably not going to want to do the latter.

With more and more small start-up projects outsourcing software development work to contractors, especially in the blockchain space, I am sometimes asked, "How can you trust the developer you hire?" This is especially pertinent in DeFi or cryptocurrency projects, because the software may eventually be moving around or locking up millions or even billions of dollars in crypto-assets. Watch the video to discover the number one criterion for determining the trustworthiness of your remote developer.
Saying you're looking to recruit a blockchain developer is like saying you're looking for a lawyer. Specifics matter - just as you don't want a patent attorney defending you against criminal charges, you don't want a web3 interface designer writing smart contract implementations of financial instruments. You need to be specific. Mind you, traditional software developer recruiting agencies are often clueless about the underlying skill requirements for the roles they are looking to fill. It's just that in blockchain it's ten times worse, because it's a relatively new field. More on that in this episode.
It's a known problem in the hiring world that assessing the competence and skill of a potential candidate for a role is difficult. It's even worse if you're hiring in a space that you're unfamiliar with, because it's easier for the candidate to pretend they know more than they do, or are less experienced than they present themselves. And blockchain is an unfamiliar space for most recruiters and hiring companies. In this video I discuss the problem, and some of the solutions.
The blockchain space has sure hotted up since the cryptowinter of 2018. As a result, blockchain engineers and smart contract developers are in more demand than ever. Entrepreneurs and companies are seeing vast sums of money pouring into DeFi and payment remittance project, and want in on the action. What they don't want to do is pay for the back-end work that needs to be done to design, build, and run such project. if you want to hire someone suitable, you're going to have to compromise. At the bare minimum you'll need to offer: ✅ Rates well above the software development average, ✅ Remote working as standard, ✅ Part-time as an option, ✅ An efficient non-toxic, non-bureaucratic work community. Don't like it? Sorry - that's how free markets work in a capitalist society.

The prominent hacker and Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith was arrested by the US government Friday after he spoke at an April conference on blockchain technologies in North Korea. The US government considers his presentation to be a transfer of technology—and therefore a violation of US sanctions. But Griffith's defenders, including Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, describe the arrest as a massive overreaction. Griffith worked for the Ethereum Foundation, and Buterin called him a friend.

This week we interview Lucas Cullen, often referred to as ‘Brisbane’s Bitcoin Grandpa’. We could write a whole blog just on his achievements alone but it is safe to say that this would not tie in well with his humble and grounded approach to life. But to summarise, Lucas is a dad, a blockchain developer, a contributor to the Standards Australia blockchain standardisation project and a founding Board Member of Blockchain Australia. One journey however, (and one that the Brisbane crypto community are glad Lucas embarked on) was the founding of the Brisbane Bitcoin and Blockchain meetup which is now home to over 1700 members including the Crypto Clothesline Podcast.It did take us three attempts to tie this man down but it was a pleasure to finally chat with him about his life, observations, thoughts and predictions on the future of crypto and blockchain. Anyone with skin in the crypto game can tell you that the infancy of the space fosters collaboration and innovation but we have also seen the emergence of contention and separation. Lucas shares his experiences in the first five minutes of his interview stating that “Everyone comes from a different angle, but it's finding a common thread and I hope that people can come to the meetups and these groups and be respectful of each other's opinions.” And on reflection of the darker side of the crypto space he went on to say that “We’ve finally found a technology that can bring so much. But then we've got this ugly side, whether it's a power struggle or whatever, or it might just be technical opinions, but just feels like the community often gets split in fighting and it’s disheartening.”Often we see burnout as a consequence of years devoted to a cause or project so we were genuinely curious as to how Lucas was able to manage his ever increasing responsibilities over so many years (and we were slightly worried this highly sought after developer doesn’t do anything other than work). To our surprise there was a method and its simplicity was comforting “I guess the key is just try and be a little bit more efficient so I practice the agile methodology and the philosophy of last responsible moment of making a decision.” To explain the agile method, let’s head to the coding horror blog which is always a humorous place to find answers. They say that “Decisions made too early in a project are hugely risky. Early decisions often result in work that has to be thrown away. Even worse, those early decisions can have crippling and unavoidable consequences for the entire future of the project.” A little confusing to the organisational demons rummaging away in the human psyche convincing us to ‘be prepared’ for everything. Perhaps the boy scouts and their mantra of being prepared are outdated and the future is living in the now. If you are wondering though, why on earth he keeps going, particularly in his dedication to the free meetups? Lucas loves what he does and is passionate, he has found his tribe and it is as simple as that. “I guess the best thing is about finding your tribe. The meetups.” There is a worldwide community of cryptocurrency enthusiasts and a meetup is usually close by. In this interview I speak with blockchain developer Benji Richards about how he became a blockchain developer and why he decided to work at Blockgeeks. Benji mentions that he started off working wanting to become a software developer and quickly realized that he wanted to learn how to create blockchain apps. Benji started learning the Solidity, the main language developers use to build applications on the Ethereum blockchain. Benji mentions that this language is easy to learn once a developer has mastered Javascript. Once Benji mastered both of these technologies he began to learn about securing data that is being transferred over a blockchain. Benji's interest in security led him to his current role developing a technology product that helps developers find security issues in their newly developed applications.
