Blockchain technology promises innovative solutions to long-standing problems across various industries. To learn about the work of a blockchain consultant, Charles Miller sat down with IBM blockchain specialist Agata Slater in this weeki's CoinGeek Conversations. In the interview, Agata talks about her role, IBM's approach to blockchain and the implications for Web3 technology. As a blockchain consultant at IBM, Agata focuses on helping enterprise clients design and implement blockchain solutions. This includes everything from identifying use cases and architectural design to the actual implementation and ongoing technical support.  According to Agata, IBM assists a diverse range of clients with varying levels of blockchain knowledge. Some approach IBM with a vision for implementing blockchain while others have specific problems they need to solve, with blockchain potentially being just one piece of the solution. Agata emphasizes that the primary goal should always be addressing the client's problems effectively, even if it means advising against blockchain when it's not the right fit.  Agata's department, IBM Consulting, remains technology agnostic. This means they can propose solutions from IBM's software portfolio but are not limited to them. They can leverage existing solutions from the market or partner with technology providers to best address the client's needs. For Agata, this flexibility allows them to serve and support clients in the most effective way possible. When it comes to selecting the right blockchain solution, Agata points out that many enterprise clients prefer permissioned blockchains like Hyperledger Fabric due to their focus on privacy, control, and compliance. She acknowledges that while permissionless blockchains have their place, enterprises often require a high degree of control and stability, which permissioned blockchains can provide. Agata also discusses the concept of Web3 what she sees as its four pillars: identity, tokenization, traceability, and payments. She sees Web3 as a promise of what the internet could become and believes these pillars are essential enablers for realizing that promise. While solutions for these aspects already exist, she believes that Web3 can bring them together in a decentralized ecosystem. Interestingly, Agata holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, where she studied the language of the Caribbean. She explains how her academic background focused on language and identity, which involved ethnographic research and the analysis of grammatical features in vernacular speech. While her academic journey may seem unrelated to blockchain, she points out that understanding cultural nuances and effective communication are essential skills when dealing with diverse clients and communities in the blockchain ecosystem. While Agata acknowledges the passion around the different blockchain technologies and protocols, she says she refrains from getting caught up in debates over which blockchain is superior. As for her thoughts on Bitcoin SV's capabilities, she acknowledges its potential in terms of scalability. She anticipates that only when more enterprises with substantial scale requirements enter the ecosystem will BSV's full potential be realized.

Kaleido has been consistently making it easier for anyone to use Web3 technology: multi-chain, across the stack, for B2B and B2C, but what more is needed to see Web3 scale if the technical barriers are being removed?... I'm joined by Sophia Lopez and Stephen Cerveny, the co-founders of Kaleido, who have been working relentlessly since 2015 to make it as easy as possible to stand-up Web3 tech. Just a few clicks and you're running and Ethereum node. A few more clicks are you've created a private network using Hyperledger Fabric. And more recently, Kaleido have included Polygon, Avalanche, ISO compliance, SOC2 compliance, and a whole lot more. There is literally no excuse for saying that setting up Blockchain technology is 'hard' any more...In this episode we will talk about:- The history of Kaleido, for those who don't know- What the team has been working on over the past few months- Learnings from the past 12 months' of Web3 (FTX, 3AC, Luna etc.) and the imperatives they give us for scaling Web3 in future- The current state of ‘Enterprise Blockchain' and emerging pockets of growth- What went wrong with well know 'Gen 1' DLT projects that were shut down (SGX, B3i, We.Trade) and how we overcome similar challenges- How can we enhance Developer Experience and make it easier for anyone to build in Web3- How far we are away from delivering fully decentralised websites, apps and e-commerce

Giovanni Franzese: It's time for corporates to turn to public blockchain solutions

For more than two decades, Giovanni Franzese has been working for the telecoms giant Ericsson where he served most recently as Head of Blockchain Business Development. As an engineer, Giovanni liked to experiment with different types of technologies, but it wasn't until six years ago that he decided to use blockchain technology to develop a product solution. The product, Ericsson Customer Acceptance is a big win for Ericsson. As he explains, “it's a big product, it's very successful, and we have we have a very vast adoption.” As he tells Charles Miller on this episode of CoinGeek Conversations, innovation from within a corporation is extremely complex. “Innovation comes through acquisition, it's much easier: you buy a company which has a brilliant idea,” he says. In Giovanni's case, his idea to use blockchain didn't happen overnight. He admits that transforming his idea into a viable product was a struggle at first, but he worked  ‘under the radar' and step by step: “it's like Lego bricks buildings, the first one and then the second, and then it was a good building at the end,” he says. It also helped that he found an internal stakeholder to sponsor his idea.Ericsson Customer Acceptance is backed by Hyperledger Fabric, a private blockchain technology. While building the product, Giovanni wasn't aware of any public blockchain with secured scalability and high transaction rates per second. On top of that, he was wary of proposing the use of public blockchain which he colleagues might fear would potentially expose corporate data.    As Giovanni explains, the challenge continued as there was resistance to a product that had the word blockchain associated to it. As he points out, “at the very beginning nobody wanted it because it's not a secret that blockchain is still a little bit controversial, especially when we have such scandals like FDX.” Despite the roadblocks, Giovanni's blockchain-based solution was deployed to several Ericsson customers. At the end, he says “the benefits were so evident.”Giovanni left his position at Ericsson to join nChain where he plans to expand the BSV-supporting global tech company into a consultant service company. Only a few weeks after taking on the role of nChain executive partner, Giovanni had the opportunity to speak at the recent London Blockchain Conference. He highlighted his experience in developing, implementing, and eventually providing blockchain solutions to big corporates. In his talk, he shared a significant career-lesson to his audience: “I don't regret what I did and the decisions I took six years ago when I decided to embrace blockchain and use private, but my message to the audience today was, if you have to start now, then don't do it in the way I did with the  use of public, use Bitcoin SV, because that is the right choice today.”Giovanni is impressed with BSV's capability to do 50,000 transactions per second and compares it to Ethereum which can only do an average of seven transactions per second, he says. He then compares the two blockchains to modes of transport saying BSV is like a Ferrari while Ethereum is like a little bike. As for discussions on using private vs public blockchain, Giovanni says, “now is the time to go public.” He supports public blockchain by saying that private blockchains are for the most part centralized, costly and it don't exploit the full capabilities of blockchain technology.

Kumaraguru Ramanujam: Using Bitcoin SV to send money across borders

CoinGeek Conversations

When Bitcoin was first invented, many hailed it as the solution to inefficient cross-border remittances. But because of the high fees associated with transactions on the Bitcoin Core network, it has never been able to live up to its full potential.  That's why Kumaraguru Ramanujam has chosen to build on the Bitcoin SV blockchain instead. His application, MoneySwipe, aims to bring down fees for sending money abroad from the current global average of 7 percent to just 1.5 percent.  He explains to Charles Miller on this week's episode of CoinGeek Conversations that the company is aiming to tackle the UK –India remittance corridor first. This makes a lot of sense as India tops the list of countries receiving personal remittances. According to a 2022 World Bank Report, a whopping $83 billion is sent back to the country each year in payments.    Ramanujam's plan is to work with regulators in India to create a cross-border payment solution without high costs. He explains that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up a regulatory sandbox with the intention of finding companies using blockchain to bring efficiency to the billion-dollar remittance industry.  The sandbox originally opened in 2018, with a company using Hyperledger Fabric selected, but it has now reopened, and Ramanujam is keen to show the RBI the power of Bitcoin SV.  “We first show the regulator that BSV's better than Hyperledger then we show them, okay, yeah, transfer of value can also happen.”  The introduction of an efficient remittance system like this would be a gamechanger for the Indian economy. If costs could be brought down to 1.5 percent, this would mean over $4 billion could be saved and go straight to the recipient, instead of being lost in fees. This would also benefit the government as it would receive more foreign exchange reserves.  “It's a win-win and it's a stated aim of the United Nations' sustainability goals to bring remittances down from 7 percent to 3 percent,” Ramanujam points out.  While the application is powered by the Bitcoin SV blockchain, stablecoins have been enabled so they can be used as a bridge asset, to ensure liquidity and comply with regulation.   The final application, which will be launched by the end of the year, will be informed by how MoneySwipe engages with regulators. The hope is that by working closely with them, the final product will be innovative, relevant, and risk-free.  The focus for now is India and the corridor with the UK, but once this has been developed, he intends to turn his attention to other regulators to create remittance solutions that work with governments across the globe.  Ramanujam believes that being able to show experience working successfully with one regulator will make it easier with others.   "We want to work with the regulator who's open with their policies right now, rather than us telling them this is how things have to be done - so we are looking at countries that are open right now with sandboxes.”

In today's episode of The DIVI Crypto Podcast, we are talking with Bryan Ritchie, the CEO of Simba Chain. Simba Chain allows you to make blockchain apps in a cloud environment without needing blockchain developers. SIMBA Chain lets you pick from 16 protocols and start making smart contracts with drag and drop tools. Simba Chain offers across the board privacy and security features that meet Government standards. The Department of Defense, the US Army and the US Navy all rely on us for secure, private blockchain solutions. Simba Chain is a chain free high-powered API system, using portable, flexible, and future-proof interfaces to smart contracts for designing trustless Web3 apps. The Simba Chain Platform auto-generates virtual REST APIs for smart contracts to easily integrate into clients' applications. Simba makes connecting to Blockchain as easy as MuleSoft does for enterprise systems, or as a Web API does for services or infrastructure. Simba offers a Smart Contract Designer (SCD) tool, allowing users to build smart contracts via a simple drag and drop UI. Users can stipulate data relationships of their digital assets and smart contracts, and the passage of said assets, even various versions of the smart contract, or allowing for the linking contracts on different chains together. Current supported chains are Ethereum, Quorum, Stellar, RSK, Binance, Avalanche, Hyperledger Fabric, Hyperledger Burrow, and Hyperledger Sawtooth. SIMBA QuickStart auto-generates Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs allow for access to smart contract methods that interact on the blockchain ledger and provides admittance control groups for reading or writing. Each of the API endpoints permit multiple data files to be connected and stored off-chain in a data store. Data comes into the platform as multipart attachments to the REST endpoints. They are then checked for access before being sent to the data bundling system. The bundling algorithm holds all files and makes hashcodes for assemblage into a manifest file. This is stored in the data store, with the hashcode enchained on the blockchain to vouch for the wholeness of the data placed into the platform. Simba is decentralized. This means that there is no single point of control, thus there is no single point of failure. It is immutable, and once data is stored, it can't be tampered with, altered, or deleted. It is customizable, where you bring your own logic, and our platform auto-generates your custom API. Lastly, Simba has low latency, using Microsoft Azure Government for lightening transactions. Ep. 165 – Cross blockchain ecosystem collaboration – insights from Contour & MineHub

Arnoud Star Busmann, CEO of MineHub and Carl Wegner, CEO of Contour join us in this exciting podcast to discuss their cross blockchain ecosystem collaboration. Arnoud and Carl share their insights on how to identify opportunities for cross ecosystem collaboration based on customer overlaps and data to ultimately build an experience that will delight the customer.   What is blockchain? Carl's definition of blockchain, within the context of distributed ledger technology, is a way of managing multiple databases and keeping that data where they overlap is in sync. You have a set of consensus mechanisms to manage agreements between the multiple databases, a communications protocol and a rules-based system for them to work. Arnould's definition of blockchain is one of a data infrastructure that provides a shared single source of truth that is distributed across an ecosystem. The responsibility for maintaining the shared truth maintained by a neutral, unbiased machine or machines. The data is owned by the data owners but the truth is controlled by none of them. The governance model of data is really the crux of blockchain technology and distributed ledger technology in Arnould's opinion. ERP 2.0, it's the ecosystem resource planning, building the apps and solutions that create value across an ecosystem instead of just one enterprise on the basis of that shared data.   Challenges MineHub addresses In the mining and metals industry there are many parties involved in post trade management of physical commodity transactions and across general supply chains. The multiple parties have a tendency to collaborate and coordinate themselves via email, sending PDFs or couriering paper documents. So, by the time that information is reconciled and acknowledged to be true, the cargo is already discharged or financed. There are a number of challenges with this approach in the sense that it is easy to manipulate, hard to trust for important business decisions making such as credit decisions, stockpile optimization, purchasing, pricing and compliance. The worst problem according to Arnoud, is that the valuable information has a tendency of being locked up in courier bags or boxes. World Economic Forum White paper: “digital transformation is estimated to generate more than $320 billion of value in the metals and mining industry over the next decade, including $77 billion” MineHub ensures that its users have high quality information, reliable information about the most important risks and opportunities in their daily work available in real time MineHub has developed its platform on HyperLedger Fabric. However, it is on their roadmap to go multi-ledger because they have a requirement to have a single reliable source of truth with data privacy and data residents.   Challenges Contour addresses Contour was previously known as Voltron before they rebranded. Trade finance is a very paper intensive industry where information is being couriered back and forth. Goods are arriving before the paperwork gets there thus making credit decisions harder to make or slower. Contour focuses on one aspect of trade finance which is a letter of credit, which is where a buyer and seller have some trust issues between each other. The buyer doesn't want to pay for something that he didn't want, whilst the seller doesn't want to ship and let go of his stock until he's sure he's going to get paid. They both use their banks to act as intermediaries to effectively manage the trust. That trust is managed by moving documentation between buyer and buyer's bank and seller and seller's bank and back and forth. Contour facilitates all four parties ability to see information at the same time. All four parties can join one ecosystem to support a letter of credit between them using one platform, an R3 Corda platform, instead of potentially four and Contour allows transparency and veracity of information between the parties.

In late January 2016, Microsoft offered Azure's DevTest Labs so that Blockchain-related services and partners can decouple the Blockchain technology from virtual machines. Microsoft's short-term goal for the Azure BaaS was to make available a certified blockchain marketplace. The recommended migration destination is ConsenSys Quorum Blockchain Service. Frank Lu is Head of Ping An Blockchain Technology at OneConnect Smart Technology, a subsidiary of Ping An. Previously to Ping An, Frank Lu was one of the original founders of Hyperledger Fabric. In this podcast we discuss the different approaches to blockchain and the advantages of creating encrypted data networks for data privacy, cross validation of data and ability to run business logic on encrypted data.   About Ping An Ping An is a Chinese holding conglomerate with 30 subsidiaries that mainly deal with insurance, banking, and financial services. The company was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Shenzhen. "Ping An" literally means "safe and well". Ping An ranked 7th on the Forbes Global 2000 list and 29th on the Fortune Global 500 list. The company is considered to be China's biggest insurer, with US$107 billion in gross premium income in 2018. Its market capitalization is at US$220 billion in July 2019, making it the world's largest insurer except for Berkshire Hathaway. Frank’s subsidiary, OneConnect Smart Technology, is mainly responsible for financial services. Frank heads the Technology Division for blockchain which is responsible for PingAn’s blockchain across the conglomerate.   What is blockchain? Blockchain is a shared ledger technology which provides a single source of truth to all participants on a blockchain. It’s a way for different participants to be able to manage and work on the same data source. Every time a change is done to the data source, all participants will have visibility of that change. It has features which makes it immutable thus ensuring any attempts to delete a record or change a record will get noticed by the other participants.   Frank’s journey to blockchain Back in 2013, Frank was part of the IBM WebSphere Strategy Team. His team was working on gamification technology which involved using coins and badges as game elements to motivate a workforce. In 2014, The project was pivoted to a mobile gaming backend as a service working for Jerry Cuomo. At that time Ethereum hadn’t yet launched but had published the Ethereum whitepaper along with a few lines of code which attracted the interest of the team Frank worked at. They investigated the Ethereum whitepaper to determine how they could use it for their gaming backend work. Based on the mobile gaming backend work a new project was launched, initially called “Blue Chain” that received $1m to explore blockchain solutions. John Wolpert was invited to lead Blue Chain and Richard Brownwas also invited to participate in the project. Initially the plan was to avoid having to start from scratch in building a blockchain solution. They looked at the possibility of partnering with Ethereum to bring their technology to the enterprise market. However, due to internal politics it was decided for IBM to build their own blockchain solution. The Blue Chain initiative was then called Hyperledger Fabric. In December 2015, Hyperledger Fabric was formerly launched under the auspices of the Linux Foundation. In early 2016, PingAn convinced Frank to join them.   PingAn’s blockchain technology As head of blockchain technology at PingAn, Frank has an interesting view of consortiums. In his opinion consortiums are formed by entities who are interested in accessing other people’s data. Everybody wants to leverage other people’s data, however most aren’t willing to share their own data. His criticism of Hyperledger’s approach to blockchain is its use of channels which is essentially a point to point connection between counterparties, something which you can do with existing traditional technologies. Hyperledger’s approach is if you want to make confidentiality a priority then you should use blockchain technology. PingAn has a different approach. Their blockchain technology is heavily based on cryptography where all data is encrypted on the blockchain and where the participants can run business logic on encrypted data.

Supply Chain Revolution
Recycling, Blockchain & Reverse Supply Chains, the Business Case for Sustainability & Recycling Plastics, and Social Environmentalism w/ Stan Chen of Recycle Go

The wastes from plastics and electronics are putting increased pressure on the recycling industry and reverse supply chains. Despite massive initiatives by public and private organizations, recycling rates remain low and progress remains slow. Estimates suggest there are 400 million tons of plastic produced each year, which is projected to more than double by 2050. Around 40% of plastic packaging is said to be landfilled, and another 32% leaked into the environment and not reused, according to the World Economic Forum. Nine-tenths of all solid waste in the United States does not get recycled. While landfills are among the biggest contributors to soil pollution (roughly 80% of the items buried in landfills could be recycled), our take-make-waste mindset and transition away from a linear economy presets a transformative opportunity. What’s the business case for change, for moving toward a sustainable and circular world? Recycling is a difficult business. The whole process is full of inefficiencies, has many stakeholders, and a lack of digital data to track a product's journey from creation to destruction. The challenge for the recycling business is supply chain visibility and traceability. In Episode 44, Sheri Hinish chats with Stan Chen of RecycleGo. Stan is a 2nd generation recycler and believes there is a way to make supply chains sustainable and scale the circular economy- particularly how we use and source plastics- using disruptive innovation like blockchain, and data analytics. This episode was recorded just days after the US presidential election and Stan explores his experience as a 1st generation Asian American, growing up in the midst of racial change and while honoring his father’s legacy as a Taiwanese recycler. Irvington, N.J.-based recycling technology solutions provider RecycleGO is using Hyperledger Fabric, an open-sourced blockchain framework, to build a platform for any type of recyclable material to be tracked throughout its lifecycle. If you’re interested in learning about the impact of plastics, micros plastics, social environmentalism and its impacts, and innovation in recycling using technology like blockchain, this episode is for you.  We also dive into the importance for making the business case in sustainability investments and the ROI period. The power of your purse is real and there’s never been a better time to invest in your future. Benefits of using a SaaS, blockchain solution for recycling like RecycleGo include: 1.    Cross-organization supply chain recycling tracking that enables data transparency and provenance 2.    Tracking individual plastic items across their lifecycles to create incentives that reward manufacturers for designing easy-to-reuse or recycle plastics. Because reuse and recycling of products is so essential to the creation of sustainable supply chains, this data will be invaluable for businesses that make eco-friendliness a top priority. 3.    Providing better recycling incentives for consumers to reduce accumulated plastics in oceans and mass-ingestion of microplastics worldwide. CPRA adds to California’s existing law, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) which gives Californians the power to know what data businesses collect about them and prevent businesses from selling that data to anyone else. The new CPRA law would close some legal loopholes in the CCPA. Proposition 24’s provisions give Californians the ability to tell businesses not to use certain categories of sensitive information, including race, health, religion, location, sexual orientation, and biometrics. It makes more explicit that “do not sell” includes data shared between companies. And it triples fines for violations if the affected consumer is younger than 16 years old. It provides funding for a Privacy Protection Agency that would be charged with enforcing privacy laws. Overall, the passage of the CPRA will drive more interest in privacy preserving technologies that decentralized ledger technology can potentially offer our society. https://www.vox.com/2020/11/4/21534746/california-proposition-24-digital-privacy-results Health Unchained Links Website: https://healthunchained.org Telegram: t.me/healthunchained Twitter: twitter.com/Healthunchaind

EPISODE SUM UP: Pharmeum is a decentralized data-powered network to fuel AI and Digital Health Apps powered by PHRM Coins based on Hyperledger Fabric. I interviewed Zain Rana, Pharmeum CEO and Founder, at the IoT world congress in Barcelona where he gave a 45 min speech explaining what is Pharmeum. The current healthcare system makes the interaction between your doctor, pharmacy, and health insurance companies highly inefficient. In addition, it costs more for every party, to carry out the procedures in a slow, inefficient, paper-based way. Pharmeum is the world's first Blockchain and AI solution, enabling access to healthcare globally straight through your smartphone. Discover how blockchain and AI can bring patient-centricity to life by centering the system around the patient, who holds their private medical data and can instantly grant access to any healthcare entity. Pharmeum is a decentralized data-economy, to power user-personalized applications. Data and AI is projected to create a $13 trillion economy by 2030. The largest corporations are built on the value of our data, without you profiting. Pharmeum cuts this unethical process out. By creating a crowdsourced data-network, where anyone can contribute their Health data into. Applications pay a listing fee to build on the Pharmeum Network. This fee is distributed back to the users who contributed the data to the network. Thereby, unlocking the value in an asset that we all possess globally. Zain Rana bio: Zain was previously a technical market analyst before investing in Bitcoin and working on Blockchain Architecture at an early stage. He created a data-analytics product and brought it to market in the UK, and founded Pharmeum in 2017. Zain has been a keynote speaker at the largest Blockchain events all over the world and is passionate about creating a new data economy. John Carolin is B3i's new CEO. In this new podcast we had a very honest and open discussion about John's journey to B3i and his assessment of what the company got right, its business model and how they can better engage with brokers. We also discussed the very exciting announcement of the Cat XoL product deployed to customers’ production environments.   John Carolin, B3i’s new CEO John is a chartered accountant and chartered financial analyst by training. He started off working at PWC in the insurance industry. However, John always had a desire to be a maker of things which is why he founded a number of businesses in South Africa including a small venture capital firm, a retail property asset management company and a B2B platform for traditional media and online broadcasters. John moved to Zurich with his young family to join Antony Elliott at Zurich whom he had worked with 15 years ago. Antony, at that time, was Zurich’s B3i representative and knew of John’s journey and invited him to join B3i to help Zurich further support its investment in B3i and offer him as a resource to the venture. For John working at B3i helped him reconcile his professional training, his industry experience, his business life stage experience and his deep passion for technology and building stuff.   What is blockchain? John thinks of blockchain as a form of DLT mechanism that initially with Bitcoin gave us a way to trust digital data and digital outcomes. It provided a ledger list of transactions that couldn’t be altered without a huge amount of coordinated effort from a number of parties. This was transformational as traditional databases could have both the data and their audit log altered by a party. Blockchain provided the first mechanism to trust that the data hadn’t be altered. Blockchain technology matured beyond being just a ledger with the likes of Ethereum providing tamper proof business processes encoded in algorithms. With smart contracts we had mechanisms where we could share automated processes in an immutable manner.   What has B3i gotten right and what can they improve on? For John it is a long list of things that B3i got right and many things they could have done better. He has looked at the many initiatives over the course of almost three decades within the insurance industry at automating aspects of the value chain, either through commercial entities or non-profit, standard setting bodies, and looked at what they have done well and what they haven't done well or where they haven't delivered on the promise that they brought. One of the things B3i got right is to address market level inefficiencies. Their ethos of "by the market, for the market" has been very important for them and one of the early things they got right. Structuring B3i itself is another. They had considered setting themselves up as a foundation that develops open source software. However, the decision to setting up as a for profit company helps create some sort of North Star that helps to clarify your decision making, keeps you honest, and execution focused when you have cooperative competitors that aren’t necessarily aligned. Moving away from Hyperledger Fabric was a business decision they got right. They felt that Corda answered questions around scalability, data, privacy and security better than Hyperledger Fabric. From a productivity perspective, it also had developer tools that enabled B3i to move quicker. In comparison to most start-ups in the consumer space that apply lean methodology, the minimum viable product is very different to one when you’re building a platform. When you build enterprise grade solutions your first customers are really important and you can’t afford to make big mistakes with them. As John says “we only get one bite at this cherry”. However, they do apply Agile ways of working by having bi-weekly sprints where they work with their customers, who are more like core contributors,

This is your daily roundup for Sunday, September 29, 2019. Ethereum’s Istanbul upgrade breaks smart contracts on Aragon, Ripple acquires Algrim, and BK Global falls short of paying up for it’s $333 million acquisition of Bithumb. ☕ Buy Me A Coffee: https://glow.fm/mota EnHelix Launched On Hyperledger Fabric EnHelix has launched on the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain for commodities trading in the gas industry. Enhelix’s blockchain solutions for the oil and gas sector comprise three major systems including Marketplace, Logistics and Settlement. The software streamlines commodities trading with applications supporting every step of the process, including pre-trade KYC, trade execution and post-trade risk management. Automated systems and smart contracts make the energy trades faster and more organized for users. Ripple Acquires Algrim Ripple has acquired Iceland-based crypto trading firm Algrim. Algrim had been developing a crypto trading platform that integrated with more than 30 markets. Six Algrim engineers will join Ripple in expanding cross-border payment corridors and contribute to the ongoing development of the company’s on-demand liquidity product, focusing on integrations with partner crypto exchanges.  On-demand liquidity through Ripple’s xRapid cross-border payment service allows companies to transfer funds from one currency to XRP and from XRP to another currency. Ripple says it has more than a dozen customers using XRP for cross-border transactions. BK Global Falling Short Of Bithumb Acquisition BK Global is falling short on its acquisition of Bithumb. In October 2018, BK Global had agreed to buy a 51 percent stake in Bithumb from BTC Korean Holdings for $333 million. Since the deal was brokered, BK Global reportedly made a down payment of $100 million. According to sources from The Korea Herald, BK Global pushed back it’s April deadline for completing the purchase, and once again missed a Sept. 30 deadline for the final payment. BK Global was allegedly seeking various partnerships or buyouts to secure the remaining capital for the acquisition, and increased its share to 70%. Bithumb has since stated that the exchange has stable management, so there won’t be any impact should the deal collapse. Crypto Rating Council Coinbase has announced the launch of its Crypto Rating Council, a member-operated organization formed to assist digital asset firms to comply with U.S. securities laws. Anchorage, Bittrex, Circle, DRW Cumberland, Genesis, Grayscale Investments and Kraken have joined the initiative. The council rates tokens between one and five. A score of one means a token has few similarities to a security and a score of five means a token resonates strongly with being a security. The council has rated 20 crypto assets, rating XRP, maker (MKR) and polymath (POLY) as likely to be securities. Bitcoin was rated as likely to not be a security due to the absence of a marketed token sale and anonymity of the project team. There has been much controversy over the rating system though, Binance CEO CZ tweeted “The guys who score above 2 should form their own counsel and re-rate everything again.” Ethereum Istanbul Upgrade Ethereum’s Ropsten test network is undergoing a hard fork upgrade known as Istanbul. A new EIP will be implemented to address increasing computational cost.  EIP 1884 will increase the gas prices of three resource-intensive operations. The SLOAD operation will increase gas cost by 4 times from 200 gas per operation to 800 gas per operation. This increase in gas will break 680 smart contracts on Aragon and will increase prices for end-users on the Kyber Network. The smart contracts on Aragon typically manage the governance of DApps running on ethereum. Aragon One CTO Jorge Izquierdo told CoinDesk that forced upgrades are required for the affected smart contracts in order to ensure DAOs built on Aragon continue to function smoothly. Before the fork is implemented, DAOs could receive ETH from one another, but after the fork DAOs on Aragon would essentially run out of gas. Istanbul is expected to introduce a more efficient network. Blockchain researcher Mihailo Bjelic said Monday that bad developer practices are likely the cause of such hiccups, rather than the nature of the upgrade itself, stating “Developers should definitely not be hard-coding assumptions about gas cost into their applications because these numbers can change at any point.”

For this week’s episode we had the pleasure to hear about the exciting blockchain work IBM does in the insurance industry and beyond. We very pleased to have Craig Bedell, Global Insurance Industry Executive, and Annap Derebail, Executive Architect Financial Services Sector from IBM, take us through IBM’s journey with Hyperledger Fabric and some interesting blockchain case studies.   Blockchain in 2 minutes Annap Annap chose to explain what is blockchain from an insurance perspective. The insurance industry operates within a network that involves brokers, service providers, regulators, advisory services, other insurance carries and reinsurers. They transact business across this network by exchanging assets that typically historically have been recorded in ledgers or systems of record by each party involved in these transactions. As they compete with each other they don’t necessarily trust each other. The effect of this lack of trust is that when ledger’s mismatch for whatever reason, either due to error or incomplete updates, businesses would spend considerable time and resources to resolving these disputes or reconciling records. Blockchain fundamentally brings a shared replicable ledger that records who owns what within a business network so that there are no disputes and records don’t have to be reconciled.   Craig For Craig, blockchain is a technical platform for conducting transactions on a shared permanent ledger that records every aspect of every transaction between all associated parties. Don Tapscott, author of the blockchain revolution, refers to blockchain as being the second coming of the internet, the first internet being the internet of information and this second internet, blockchain, being the internet of value.   Hyperledger Hyperledger was founded back in 2015 when a number of companies that were working on blockchain realised that they could achieve more by working together rather than separately. They came together with the aim of pooling resources in order to create open-source blockchain technology for anyone to use. The members put the governance under the foundation or guardianship of the Linux Foundation. The organisation now has over 230 member organisations from a wide variety of industries.   Three key principles, why insurers should consider Hyperledger According to IBM, there are three key principles, why insurance companies should consider Hyperledger: Open source: the code is written in a reliable manner, has no vendor lock-in, resulting in high quality solutions Open governance: all technical decisions carried out within Hyperledger are made by a group of community elected developers. Open community: An open community concept which establishes enterprise friendly consistent handling of IP and this is done by adopting the Apache 2.0 license and the Creative Commons attribution 4.0 license for content. Beyond these three key principles there are a set of design principles for enterprises: modularity, security, interoperability, availability of open APIs that enable ease of dealing with these sorts of Hyperledger blockchain frameworks.   IBM’s involvement in Hyperledger – Fabric Hyperledger Fabric has a modular based platform for building distributed ledger solutions. This is being developed as open source. IBM has contributed about 40,000 lines of code to initially bootstrap the Fabric project. The code is owned and operated by the community. It supports a large number of privacy and confidentiality features that fit all manners of insurance business use case: Channels which allow groups of participants to carry out separate transaction in private Private data which enables parties to transact data with each other without revealing its content Un-linkable transactions which brings confidentiality to transactions   IBM’s involvement in Hyperledger – Indy Hyperledger Indy is a distributed ledger,

Ep.21 – ACORD: data standards for blockchain in insurance

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2018 30:49

Today’s episode takes us to New York with Bill Pieroni, President and CEO of ACORD, the global data standard setting body for blockchain in the insurance and related financial services industry. Bill shares his perspective about the importance of the uniform data standard provided by ACORD and the value of investing in blockchain and new technologies.   Blockchain in two minutes A blockchain is a digitized, decentralized ledger of transactions. The first step is a transaction request, such as a claim, contract or endorsement. This request goes over a peer-to-peer network and, after its validity is verified through cryptographic algorithms, it is combined into a new data block which is added to an existing blockchain, thereby completing the transaction. In insurance, the peer-to-peer network can be comprised of insurers, reinsurers, brokers, independent agents, regulators or anyone with a vested interest in the insurance industry.   ACORD ACORD is the global standard setting body in the insurance industry. It aims to bring together various stakeholders for whom collaborating would otherwise be difficult, either because they are competitors or because they lack the necessary infrastructure. For over forty years ACORD has been providing the infrastructure, facilitation and expertise to enable fast and accurate data interchange by creating electronic standards, standardised forms, taxonomies and tools. It boasts over 8,000 global members, with one third of all global premiums leveraging ACORD standards covering brokers, agents, carriers, reinsurers and solution providers.     With new technologies such as blockchain, IoT and usage-based insurance, data standards have become more important than ever. Investing in innovation runs a risk of becoming a one-off investment due to an inability to effectively leverage the technology. By setting a common data standard across the industry, ACORD helps lower the cost, risk and time associated with investing in innovation.     ACORD and blockchain A great aspect of blockchain is that it requires a level of cooperation which brings together the stakeholders in the insurance industry. Operational efficiency is blockchain’s most popular feature. However, Bill reminds us of blockchain’s potential to enable the development of superior value propositions. Talented individuals across the insurance industry can work together to focus on meaningful differentiation rather than just thinking how to compete on price based on a specific set of data. Following a proprietary approach to data standards would be a mistake. It would create barriers in the industry by limiting a product’s uptake and the the availability of vendors to develop innovative solutions. Having a common data standard is therefore critical. It reduces risk and makes it easier for existing legacy platforms to adapt to blockchain. A common data standard does not only create a tactical advantage, ie cost reduction, it creates a strategic advantage as well. ACORD standards leverage much of the work done in the insurance industry in the past decades and share that with ACORD’s global network. ACORD is involved in most, if not all, blockchain initiatives globally, either by helping develop their data standards or by directly leveraging ACORD standards as part of the initiative. Here at Insureblocks we have seen quite a few of these initiatives. Insurwave, B3i and R3’s Corda blockchain all utilise ACORD standards. ACORD is also working with different digital network operators, including B3i and the RiskBlock Alliance, to create a smart contract standard on how data is processed, a key step in allowing interoperability between different networks. Finally, ACORD is working with Ethereum and IBM’s Hyperledger Fabric as it seeks to set a uniform data standard across blockchains.   Data in the insurance industry Data is the lifeblood of the insurance industry,

Welcome to the first episode of our new News Flash series, where we share the latest developments in the blockchain space, straight off the press. In today’s episode we have Ryan Rugg, Global Head of Insurance at R3 and a regular speaker at Insureblocks. R3, which featured in one of our previous episodes (R3 – The blockchain banking consortium) started in 2015 as a consortium of financial institutions that joined forces to test blockchain solutions. Three years later, their hard work has culminated in an exciting new project and we are proud to announce the release of Corda Enterprise to the insurance industry. Corda Enterprise is R3’s commercial offering that brings greater enterprise capabilities to the Corda platform. It builds upon Corda’s functionality, enhancing availability, security and performance.   Corda Corda, the blockchain created by R3, is the only blockchain that has been designed and built specifically for business. Corda’s focus on privacy, security and scalability distinguish it from other blockchains. Unlike Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric, where all the information is shared between every node on the network, Corda shares information on a bilateral and multilateral level only with parties that need to see it. This choice has certainly paid off as there are currently over 200 financial institutions, regulators, insurers, trade associations, professional services firms and ISVs that are working on Corda. Many of these have featured on Insureblocks, such as B3i, which replaced the IBM Hyperledger Fabric with Corda, Insurwave and RiskBlock. Corda also appeals to industries beyond insurance. Fusion LenderComm, a syndicated lending platform and GuildOne’s Royalty Ledger, a blockchain solution for the oil and gas sector, both utilise Corda. This wide participation across industries is the reason Corda is an open source project. R3 wanted Corda to be a decentralised and open environment where every company can work with others or create and share their own innovative solutions. Continuing in this spirit, Corda and Corda Enterprise are fully interoperable. Anyone can remain on Corda without procuring the Enterprise licence. Anyone can upgrade to Corda Enterprise and still work with applications on the Corda blockchain.   Why Corda Enterprise? The whole idea of Corda is to enable businesses to transact directly and privately, reducing transaction costs and streamlining operations. However, many large users faced technical, regulatory and compliance issues that prevented them from using blockchain internally at scale. After listening to Corda members’ requests, R3 is launching Corda Enterprise and has implemented additional functionalities so that every business can benefit. These extra features enhance security and make Corda Enterprise easier to scale: Blockchain Application Firewall - enables Corda Enterprise to be deployed inside corporate data centres while retaining the ability to securely communicate with other nodes on the network. This is a unique feature that is not present in any other blockchain 24/7 support Predictable release schedules Governance, performance and availability monitoring Enhanced security Disaster recovery Support for Oracle and SQL databases Corda network The Corda Network People often talk about ledger interoperability but forget about interoperability within ledgers themselves. Within differently designed networks, such as Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric, users cannot seamlessly operate from one application to another, leading to trapped assets in different channels. In reality businesses want to operate with more than one application at a time. With Corda Network, members have a unique ID. This means they have a single identity on the platform and can seamlessly operate within all applications, whether on Corda Enterprise or Corda open source.   Starting out: Corda or Corda Enterprise?

R3 – the blockchain banking consortium For this 6th episode we are going to move a little away from insurance by visiting R3 – the blockchain banking consortium, to hear about their blockchain journey. For this episode I was privileged to have Ryann Rugg, Head of North America at R3, chat to me straight from New York. Ryan is spearheading North American Business Development and Insurance for R3, focused on building and empowering blockchain solution for her clients.   2 minute definition of blockchain For Ryan, there is no formal agreed definition which what makes it difficult to define in 2 minutes. In its most simplest form, blockchain is about getting to reach consensus on a replicated shared database across multiple sites / entities / institutions with no central institution. To be able to bring untrusted entities within a trusted environment. The difference between DLT (distributed digital ledger) and blockchain. Blockchain is a data structure which is a form of DLT and it is comprised of immutable digitally recorded data called blocks.  A blockchain is a way of implementing a DLT. But not all DLT are blockchains.   What is R3? September 2015, a group of nine banks got together with the founders of R3 as they were spending hundreds of millions of dollars on building PoCs (proof of concepts). They realised that it was an emerging technology and they wanted to mutualise the resources. One of the first projects they started working on was project Genesis who aim was to test out all the different blockchains out there such as Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric to name a few, to see which one would fit for financial institutions. As none were fit for purpose from a scalability and security standpoint they decided to build their own blockchain, called Corda, from the ground up by their members for their members. Since those days R3 has rapidly grown from the original nine banks to now over 200 banks, financial institutions, regulations and trade associations.   The R3's secret sauce… being a start-up! Being to fail fast is key. They have run 100-150 use cases and PoCs. Several of them were just PoCs for their members to learn from. They use a lot of agile development, with most projects running for 6 – 12 weeks. At the end of the PoC it is determined if it goes into production and what resources are required to enable that. If it is not put into production then the learnings are mutualised, put into white papers and shared within the ecosystem as to the reason why this PoC wasn’t put into production. Close to 85% of the PoC’s code is open sourced to its members to help accelerate its members understanding and developments with blockchain. Additionally, R3 partners with numerous startups including ChainThat, to help accelerate R3’s growth by building apps on top of R3’s platform. For this year, R3 expect to have five apps onto their platform.   Working with Acord A lot of the pain points that insurers are facing are very similar to the ones of  banks in terms of identity, KYC (know your customer), AML (anti-money laundering), reference data issues, trade life cycle and codifying contracts. R3 quick realised that for them to work alongside the insurance industry on a blockchain they needed a set of standard. So R3 partnered with Acord to launch the insurance industry centre of excellence for DLT in April 2017. Acord was a way to accelerate working with insureds and optimise the messaging and reconciliation for insureds onto blockchain. In addition to insurance, R3 is interacting with other industries such as supply chain which is starting to build on the R3, Corda blockchain platform.   Where to start with blockchain? In Insureblocks’ episode 2 - B3i, a question we had discussed with Greg Crow, Global Head of Architecture at XL Catlin, was should an insurance company join a consortium like B3i or try to build its own blockchain PoCs? Ryan agreed with Greg’s answer that you should do both....
