Is the Back to the Future Trilogy the culmination of what we think of as the Amblin Experience? Did you know that the original thought was to have Doc and Marty travel back to the groovy '60s? And what exactly happened with all that Crispin Glover stuff? All those questions and more are discussed as Vespe is joined by his Ain't It Cool compatriot and incredibly film writer Drew McWeeny as we dive into Back to the Future Part 2, a film that set the template that's still being followed to this day (looking at you, Avengers: Endgame). We bring up lots of behind the scenes stories and take a close look at Spielberg's relationship with Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis. It's a ripper, this one. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the 7th episode of our Trilogies series. We hope you enjoyed our last episode where we looked at the Back To The Future Trilogy. We are changing things up on these Trilogy episodes just slightly and we are going to be talking about our first non-American/Hollywood trilogy. This episode we will be taking you to the Bengal region of India to discuss and review the classic and influential trilogy: The Apu Trilogy directed by Satyajit Ray. One of the most influential filmmakers of all time. The films include Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road), Aparajito (The Unvanquished), and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) and they are based on two books written by Bibhutibhusan Banerjee. The films were shot over the course of five years with the same crew members. Pather Panchali was Ray's directorial debut. On this episode, we do go into detail on these classic pieces of cinema from India, films very much inspired by Italian Neo-Realism and majority of the films have non-classically trained actors. We recommend you watch the films first before listening to this episode, if you haven't watched them already. We do go into spoilers. They are available on Blu-Ray and also on The Criterion Channel. We hope you continue to enjoy this new Trilogies Series we're doing and we also hope you enjoy this episode.Stay Tuned for more!We will be returning back to our usual programming after taking it a bit easy this summer. Robert Zemeckis was one of the most prominent directors of the eighties and nineties. His string of hits is almost unmatched. Think about it - Romancing the Stone, the Back to the Future Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, etc. This is why it's so bizarre that a live-action Disney Pinocchio movie directed by Zemeckis and starring his best favorite leading man, Tom Hanks, was essentially dumped to streaming. It came and went without much fanfare, while it would have been a cinematic event fifteen years ago. WTF Happened? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into Zemeckis' career, which began with the underrated pair I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars before Romancing the Stone made him an A-lister. We dig into how he was actually fired from Cocoon because the Fox brass thought Romancing the Stone would flop, leading to him making Back to the Future with pal Steven Spielberg. We dig into the then-impossible idea of mixing live-action and animation in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, show some love to Forrest Gump, and examine some underrated gems like Death Becomes Her.But WTF Happened to Robert Zemeckis? In the 2000s, Zemeckis became a proponent of Motion Capture technology, leading to The Polar Express and Beowulf, movies which are a little uncanny valley if you revisit them today. Even if he's not quite the mega-watt hitmaker he once was, with films like Welcome to Marwen being disastrous, he's still capable of making gems like the fantastic Denzel Washington movie Flight. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Mathew Plale), narrated and edited by Taylor James Johnson, we dig into the director's life, legacy and future.

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads. Its time to pick up where things left off as Tim Williams is joined by the "Hill Valley Save the Clock Tower Committee" (aka the Co-Host Panel) as they continue their discussion on the "Back to the Future" Trilogy for this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback! Panel Includes Charlie Cotter, Chad Sheppard, and Laramy & Bethany Wells ("Moving Panels" Podcast) Pre-Recorded Segments from previous co-hosts include Ron West, Jeff Atkins, and Gerry D. ("Totally Rad Christmas" Podcast) Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The first film had had slightly more subtle placement deals with various companies including Toyota, Pepsi and Miller, but in the second, these deals started to take an active place in the story. Pepsi (with the fictional ‘Pepsi Perfect' variety) is even more prominent in the Café 80s, and there are Black and Decker products both real (the “antique” Dustbuster) and fictional (the food hydrating machine). Pizza Hut, meanwhile, was eager not just to show its logo on the pizza that gets hydrated, but actually provided a ‘professional food stylist' to the production, to ensure that said pizza looked as appetizing as possible onscreen. A running gag throughout the entire trilogy: every time Marty goes into the diner location for the first time (that's Lou's in 1955, Cafe '80s in 2015 and the saloon in 1885), he orders a beverage that he never actually gets to drink any of before being interrupted by a “Hey, McFly!” In Part III Marty notices the name of ‘Frisbie', an actual pie company, and presumably thinks it's just a coincidence that the name on the flat tray is similar to ‘Frisbee', the flying disc. Of course, the two are actually linked – the pie company gave the colloquial name to the disc-throwing game, before the Wham-O company trademarked the slightly altered ‘Frisbee' in the 1950s. It's our first subtle hint (if you don't count the broken masonry on the clock tower) that Marty's trip to the 1950s has had a lasting effect on his own present. Through these adventures the space time continuum has been mucked up, fixed, mucked up and fixed again! This time though (see what I did there?), there's something far more perilous in store... the grossness of the Old West. THE WATER IS BROWN. But that ew, aside, our BOP 'n A Movie series examining The Back To The Future Trilogy has reached the teased conclusion, and while Part 2 famously dug deep into time travel shenanigans and big sci-fi stakes, the final entry scaled it all back, sticking to a singular adventure and making the stakes personal for our time-displaced heroes in a tale about growth, love, and how Tom Wilson is probably the greatest actor who's ever lived and dammit why don't we talk about that more!? Saddle up, make yourself some Wake-Up Juice, and watch along with us for this feature audio commentary for what is, un-ironically, one of the best Western's ever produced... The third and final entry in the BACK TO THE FUTURE Trilogy sees Marty and Doc in the Old West of Hill Valley in 1885, where Marty must save Doc from getting gunned down by an ancestor of Biff Tannen.  It's a softer, and more romantic effort, as Doc finds love with the charming schoolteacher, Clara Clayton, who is also supposed to meet her maker, unless Marty can figure out a way to save them both without messing things up for the future!

Podcast Audience!  You gotta come back with us!  Where you ask?..BACK TO THE FUTURE!  This week, in honor of Back to the Future Day 2016 (October 21st-The Day Marty and Doc land in the future) we decided to take a look back at the franchise that introduced us to hover boards, self lacing Nikes, and Donald Trump....I mean Biff Tannen.  So grab your Gray's Sports Almanac and refuel your Mr. Fusion as we gun this podcast up to 88mph and explore the world of Back to the Future!   Movie News! Tommy Wiseau, Director of cult classic, The Room to star in new film, Best F(r)iends The Back to the Future Trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990) Back to the Future (1985) Written by both Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale and centered on the idea of "what if you could go back and see what your parents were like as teenagers."    No studio wanted this film. Disney did show interest until they saw certain incestual tones in the screenplay (ie. Marty and Lorraine McFly). Zemeckis directed Romancing the Stone which was a huge success and ultimately led to his directing Back to the Future. Eric Stolz originally was cast as Marty McFly. However, Stoltz portrayed a very morose Marty that ultimately was counter to the vision that Gale and Zemeckis had. Michael J. Fox was brought in and brought a lighter and comedic tone to the character of Marty. The shooting schedule was grueling for Fox who would shoot Back to the Future at night and Family Ties during the day. Back to the Future-Take Aways Film is more about George McFly's transition from doormat to self confidence rather than Marty's journey. One of the biggest issues with the film is that it creates plot points for Marty yet fails to deliver. Marty never is shown gaining the confidence to send in his demo to the record company. Robert Zemeckis is not that great at diversity. Mayor Goldie Wilson is a corrupt politician. Rock and Roll is gifted to Chuck Berry by Marty McFly. Back to the Future: Part II (1989) Centers on Doc and Marty travelling 15 years into the future to stop an incident from occurring with Marty's kids that would destroy his family.  Ultimately, they are success and create a secondary plot in which future Biff steals the time machine and changes the past and creates a dystopian 1985. Cartoon version of the original film. Relies on goofy future tech and style as well as a goofy Donald Trump-esque dystopian present. Light on plot. Does the job that a sequel should do by expanding the mythos of the original. Plot starts to focus more on Marty and the repercussions of his short temper. This movie is full of plot holes- See John's extensive list at 52:17 Plot holes can be resolved with the application "SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF." Also, IT'S A FUCKING TIME TRAVEL MOVIE. Back to the Future: Part III (1990) Dumbest of the three. The plot centers on Marty and Doc Brown being stuck in the old west after the events of the 2nd film and their journey to get back to 1985 before Mad Dog Tannen, an ancestor of Biff's, shoots and murders Doc over a matter of 80 dollars. Secondary plot, deals with Doc falling in love with school teacher, Clara Clayton. The time machine is ultimately destroyed after Marty makes it back to 1985.  Doc Brown stays in 1885 with Clara. Doc Brown then comes back from 1885 with a brand new time machine made out of a train----which is completely counter to his "I should have never invented that infernal time machine" logic. The guess is that this was tacked on to lead into the Back to the Future cartoon. Final Thoughts First film is a near flawless movie. Sequels are ok, but not great and definitely do not hold up nearly as well as the original film.

Simon and Keith complete their first run through of the A-Z of directors by talking about the filmmaker Robert Zemeckis. Discovered by Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis has gone on to make classics like the BACK TO THE FUTURE Trilogy (see our 88mph Edition to hear our thoughts on those films), brought Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse together on the screen for the only time in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?, won an Oscar for Forrest Gump and pushed the art of Motion Capture with CGI films like the POLAR EXPRESS and A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Robert Zemeckis has certainly left his mark on cinema. The films under discussion this week is USED CARS, ROMANCING THE STONE, BEOWULF and FLIGHT.
