In a world where the allure of instant gratification beckons with every click, Bobby Seagull emerges as a beacon of rationality amidst the frenzy of impulsive purchases. Armed with the powerful tools of mathematics, Bobby has unveiled a revelation that could revolutionize the way we approach spending. After crunching the numbers with his mathematical acumen, Bobby prescribes a sage piece of advice: wait. A precise 2 days and 21 hours, to be exact. This, he asserts, is the golden interval to deliberate before indulging in a purchase.Bobby's insights stem from a comprehensive study, shedding light on the spending habits of the modern consumer. Astonishingly, the average UK adult succumbs to the siren call of seven impulse purchases annually, tallying an eye-watering £1,050. Among the demographic, Generation Z emerges as the most susceptible, averaging a staggering 14 impulsive acquisitions, equivalent to £2,100.As a nation, we harbor a penchant for regret over certain acquisitions. Bikes top the list, with 19% expressing remorse, closely followed by games consoles and gadgets (17%), and clothes (16%). Surprisingly, experiences such as holidays and getaways (6%) and practical household appliances like freezers (13%) and fridges (11%) elicit significantly lower buyer's remorse.Intriguingly, Bobby's mathematical alchemy reveals a fascinating twist. While household items may not dazzle with immediate allure, they emerge as stalwart champions of cost-efficiency. Among them, hoovers emerge as the unassuming heroes, boasting the lowest average cost per use, trailed closely by freezers and fridges.Delving into the motivations that drive impulsive spending, the findings are enlightening. Half of the respondents cite the sheer joy of self-indulgence, while nearly a third (31%) confess to seeking solace in an impulse buy, using it as a balm for emotional well-being.Bobby Seagull, with his profound understanding of numbers, stands as a guardian of prudent spending, a beacon guiding us through the labyrinth of impulse purchases. In a world racing towards instant gratification, Bobby's wisdom beckons us to pause, reflect, and make purchases not only with our hearts, but with our minds. Hosted on Acast. Ravi Shankar was born in India in 1920 and came to prominence just as India gained independence from Britain in 1947. He was initially a dancer and then a virtuoso sitarist and composer, and became famous internationally because of his collaborations with Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison and the Beatles. Bobby Seagull's parents came from Kerala, and while Ravi Shankar's music came from the north, Bobby still remembers hearing him play growing up. There are early clips of Ravi Shankar explaining the sitar, plus George Harrison's account of their North American tour. Joining the conversation is biographer Oliver Craske, author of Indian Sun who knew Ravi well. He counts up in the programme how many relationships Ravi may have had. If you hated maths at school, does it follow that you'll be bad at managing money as an adult? Money Clinic host Claer Barrett hears from Jade, a 21-year-old self-employed graduate, who says even thinking about numbers makes her feel anxious, bringing back memories of not knowing the answer in school maths lessons. In her adult life, it's affecting Jade's ability to manage her finances, particularly as the cost of living rises. But Jade's problem is far from uncommon — half of working-age adults in the UK have the numeracy skills expected of a child at primary school – and ahead of National Numeracy Day on Wednesday May 18, Money Clinic hears from a trio of experts on how to improve your numeracy skills. They are Bobby Seagull, the TV personality and Britain's most famous maths teacher, Mr MoneyJar, aka Timi Merriman-Johnson, and Suzanne Dale, who teaches adult numeracy in the workplace. To take the 10-minute National Numeracy Challenge and download many other free resources, visit the National Numeracy website: https://www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk/challenge/Got a money issue that you'd like to talk to us about? Bobby Seagull started his life from humble beginnings living on a council estate in East London before rising to fame as captain of Emmanuel College Cambridge on the BBC quiz show University Challenge. TV quizzer Bobby Seagull and his polymath big brother Davey Jose (artist, tech analyst, mathematician) grew up in a council house in East London, where "using your mind" was valued above all else. 2 of 4 boys, the pair have been close from the start, inheriting their bouncy positivity from their parents. An accident as a toddler meant Davey went to special school until fate stepped in and he had the chance to go to mainstream school like Bobby. Sibling rivalry spurred both boys on to academic success: Bobby went to Eton on a full scholarship and then to Oxford to do Maths. He would have gone to Cambridge like Davey, but they argued over their beloved rival football teams and the rest is history! Maths Week Ireland has been launched by Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD. The annual festival of maths returns from the 10th to 18th October with a range of largely virtual/online events and is set to attract participation by schools and people all over the island. Over 15 years Maths Week Ireland has grown to be the biggest such festival in the world in the world and is now replicated in Scotland and England. A fun, all-inclusive celebration, Maths Week promotes and develops a positive attitude towards maths in young people and a wider awareness of the importance of maths across all sectors of society. Cross-community and cross-border participation is an important part of Maths Week. Now in its 15th year, this year’s celebration will look a little different with health restrictions meaning few physical events can take place. However, the fun and magic of maths week will be replicated in lots of virtual events across the week. Running throughout the course of the week will be the new ‘MathsWeekTV’ which will be hosted by a range of engaging and entertaining personalities and be watched by primary and secondary school audiences. The lineup of MathsWeekTV presenters includes Bobby Seagull, popular TV presenter, and Maths teacher. Bobby is a regular contributor to Radio Four’s Puzzle For Today and a columnist for the Financial Times and co-presented a BBC TV series Monkman & Seagull’s Genius Guide to Britain. Other presenters include highest-selling maths author Kjartan Poskitt, who has sold over 5 million ‘Murderous Maths’ books, leading STEM presenter Ken Farquhar and Caroline Ainslie, who is a co-organiser of the Global STEAM Lesson who aims to teach the mathematical fundamentals of shape, space and measurement with the use of soap bubbles and giant balloons. Being online means Maths Week can bring YouTube star Tom Crawford from Oxford or “Mathematician at Large” James Tanton into schools across the island from his base in Arizona. There will also be many local presenters and fun activities for the schools and the home. Additional highlights of the week include: Maths Week Magic workshops – schools across the island will have the chance to join in online workshops learning about the magic of maths. Online Family Scavenger Hunt with Maths Week enthusiast Steve Sherman. Get the entire family involved and spend Maths Week solving problems in the most unusual ways. Connected Classrooms – primary schools all across Ireland will connect online with each other and with schools in Africa for a maths workshop Nationwide Daily Maths Challenges will be taking place in schools across the country throughout the course of the week. Maths Week Ireland Award Ceremony 2020 – The recipient of the Maths Week Award 2020 will be announced for their contribution to Raising Public Awareness of Maths. Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD said, “I’m delighted to launch Maths Week 2020. We use maths in every aspect of our lives including practical everyday activities in school, at home and beyond. Therefore, engaging children with maths and numeracy from an early age nurtures the skills of inquiry and problem solving, in turn helping them to make informed decisions and to understand the world around them. Maths Week helps to prepare our children for their future lives. To succeed at any subject area a positive attitude is essential, and Maths Week has been very successful in helping to build a positive attitude towards maths for all. I am delighted to see primary and post-primary schools, universities, institutes of technology and partners north and south working together with government and industry to achieve this.
