Grip Strip Podcast Episode 234 – Flipping The Script This episode covers recent races in NASCAR's Cup and Xfinity series at Daytona, along with the Truck series at Milwaukee Mile. Harrison Burton celebrated his first-ever Cup win, making it a special moment for the Wood Brothers, as it marks their 100th victory. He managed a last-minute pass on Kyle Busch, which secured him a spot in the playoffs. We discuss some key moments from the races, including multiple cars flipping over, and how NASCAR seems to struggle with handling such incidents. There's also a brief recap of what happened at Michigan International Speedway and updates on points as we head to Darlington. In the Xfinity series, Ryan Truex scored his second win of 2024 while driving for Toyota. We're still piecing together exactly what happened during that race. In the Truck series, Layne Riggs finally claimed his first victory, though he dislocated his shoulder in the celebration, which his father, Scott, witnessed live. Early leaders included Eckes, Majeski, and Heim before Riggs took the lead. We also look at the points heading to Bristol for the second playoff race in the round of 8. Moving on to IndyCar, the last week featured races in Portland and Gateway. Penske Racing was on fire with Josef Newgarden winning at Gateway and Will Power succeeding in Portland. Alex Palou continued to show consistency, while Scott McLaughlin had a more challenging race. We provide updates on other key players and points as we go into Milwaukee for a doubleheader. In Formula 1 news, Lando Norris struggled at the start once again but ultimately celebrated a win, marking McLaren's rise above Red Bull and Aston Martin. Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium, but Carlos Sainz had a tough weekend. Mercedes faced some difficulties, with George Russell dropping out of contention and Lewis Hamilton receiving a questionable penalty yet recovering to finish eighth. Questions loom around Logan Sargeant's future in F1 and who might step in next, along with updates as we head to Monza. In our GSP Roundup, we highlight the F2 and F1 Academy races at Zandvoort last week, with the F2 and F3 season finale coming up at Monza this week. It was an eventful night as the IndyCar Series held a showdown at dusk in St. Louis, and after a chain reaction spin-out in the beginning stages our host Conor Daly rebounded to a well-fought 13th place finish. He joins co-host Chase Holden to chat about the weekend at Gateway and how he felt his new Juncos Hollinger team struggled to find the pace they had at the hybrid test a couple of weeks ago. They also analyze which drivers looked to be on the brink of disaster during qualifying and how Team Penske seemed to be at ease behind the wheel. Conor delivers an in depth play-by-play breakdown of what caused his early spin and some of the other on-track calamity he raced around. He also dives into the controversial late race restart and illustrates how the stack-up wasn't completely the leader's fault.Race winner Josef Newgarden joins the show to give his side of the events. He reflects on the power Team Penske showed and gives credit to his team for bringing such a strong fleet of cars to the track. He also details his mid-race spin and how he was able to rebound from it to find himself in victory lane. Josef gives listeners insight to what took place from his perspective on the late race restart that claimed his teammate Will Power, Alexander Rossi and others. Josef explains that while he feels bad that Will and others were caught up in a mess, he did nothing wrong except try to execute a race winning move that would protect his lead from a charging Scott McLaughlin. Josef would love to see more transparency from IndyCar in the way of in-car analytics, similar to how SMT data is available in the NASCAR world. He and Conor also debate the ongoing problem with aggressive restarts in IndyCar and what measures can be taken to prevent future crashes of similar fashion.
IndyCar may have had the week off, but that didn't stop the news machine from turning the motorsports world on its ear and the Speed Street boys have the latest scoop. Conor Daly chats with his co-host Chase Holden about catching the 24 Hour of Le Mans coverage over the weekend, where many IndyCar drivers were in action. Friend of the show Nolan Siegel brought home a victory in the LMP2 class at the historic race, and found himself in the middle of the latest IndyCar silly season happenings, as the announcement was made that he would be replacing Theo Pourchaire in the Arrow-McLaren number-6 for the rest of the 2024 season. Conor expresses to Chase the immense pressure that young drivers are facing in what is shaping up to be a volatile driver employment climate, where many drivers have been let go after being unable to perform in a short amount of time.Road America winner Will Power joins the show to discuss how his Penske number-12 team converted some recent solid finishes to a well earned victory in Elkhart Lake. Will had a front row seat to the calamity that broke out in the first turn of the race, which he attributes to passing ability becoming increasingly difficult this year and the importance of top-10 finishes. Will suggests the limitation of push to pass in cars that are about to be overtaken, which would lead to more strategy on the shorter courses that IndyCar visits. Conor also inquires about Will's utilization of overcutting his teammates and how that helped him come out on top during the final stretch of the race. The guys all look ahead to the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey and speculate what differences fans will see in the race this year compared to last year's season finale at the 2.238 mile long road course.

BLINDSPOTTING: A NASCAR Podcast For The People, By The People
This week, we have a very special guest with a long family history in the sport of racing, Raymond Fox III. Raymond is currently the Car Chief for Ryan Blaney (#12) of Penske Racing. Both Raymond's grandfather (Raymond Fox, Sr.) and father (Raymond Fox, Jr.) worked in the industry and instilled a love of the sport into Raymond at a young age. In addition to sharing his own personal journey with us, we get into the nuts and bolts of what his role entails at Penske Racing, we discuss Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, Roger Penske, his interests off the track, his family and much more! In addition to the interview, we review the action in Kansas and take a look at what we might see this weekend in Darlington. As always, you can find us on Twitter (@NASCARBlindSpot), on FaceBook (BlindSpotting Racing Podcast) or email us (blindspottingpodcast@gmail.com). Enjoy and thank you so much for listening!
This week begins with some sad news as three-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Bobby Unser passed away late Sunday night after a lengthy illness at the age of 87. Upon reflecting on the life of this Indy 500 legend (who is also a 10-time Pikes Peak Hill Climb champion), a line from Dr. Seuss comes to mind: “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” Not only was Unser one of IndyCar racing's most legendary drivers, he was also one of its greatest personalities. He was fast and fearless on the track, and talkative and controversial outside of the car. He won 37 IndyCar Series races in both the United States Auto Club (USAC) and CART. He also won 52 poles in his career. His Indy 500 wins came in 1968, 1975 and 1981. Once his racing career was over, Unser became part of ABC's television crew that telecast the Indianapolis 500 and other IndyCar races on TV. His personality and bombastic style made him a fan favorite. The episode of Pit Pass Indy is entirely devoted to Unser as host Bruce Martin gives his highly personal reflections on a driver who was a hero as a youngster and became a close friend in life. Racing legend and 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti, a friend with Unser for most of his career and one of his fiercest rivals, gives his thoughts on Unser. Also, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears pays tribute to his former teammate at Penske Racing. Instead of recapping the doubleheader action at Texas Motor Speedway this past weekend, those interviews will be part of next week's show on Pit Pass Indy. Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl sits down with Don Miller, who served as the former President of Penske Racing South, alongside founding the N.C. Auto Racing Hall of Fame in Mooresville. Originally hailing from Chicago, the American automobile enthusiast was attracted by the rich history of motorsports in the Carolinas, which led him to join Penske Racing in 1972 to work on the team’s stock car and IndyCar programs. Don takes a trip down memory lane, reflecting on the series of events that culminated in the legacy he left for the industry before retiring from Penske. Tough love, humbling lessons, and the resulting changes from within dominate today’s conversation with Don. Asked of his decision-making framework throughout his storied career, he replies: “People, as they go through life, tend to wonder whether what they are doing is really the right thing for their family or simply out of ego. They would ask, ‘Should I rethink it?’ or ‘Should I have thought more about it?’ As time goes on, you have those thoughts if you are human.” Don recalls that, years ago, he desired nothing more than to win races, each and every time. His business partner Rusty Wallace, on the other hand, who had just come off of a racing career in his own right, had more of an ambition to entertain through the company rather than to win at all costs. Don and Rusty’s vision came to a head when a certain individual told them that they “were in the entertainment business. If somebody comes along and wins all the races, nobody is going to come to the show. I really do not care how many races you win, but if you win too many, it is not going to make me happy.” It was at that moment when Don realized that he needed to temper his ego with “the science of it all”—that is, the business of running an auto racing organization—if he wanted the business to thrive for the long haul. Don also speaks on the inspiration behind the creation of the Stocks for Tots program in Mooresville in 1989. Initially conceived as a one-day event to collect gifts and donations as well as to bring race industry celebrities together with fans, Stocks for Tots very quickly grew into an established charitable foundation that is still going strong to this day. Don remembers thinking, upon establishing Stocks for Tots, that “this is an opportunity for us, as part of the racing community, to give back to those who allow us to do what we do. It is what we should have been doing all along.” Connect with LITC:carl@lifeinthecarolinas.com www.lifeinthecarolinas.com www.lifeinthecarolinaspodcast.com

The 2003 Daytona 500, the 45th running of the event, was the first race of the 2003 NASCAR Winston Cup season, having been held on February 16 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. 2000 NASCAR Busch Series champion Jeff Green won his second career Winston Cup pole. Prior to the race, the drivers paid tribute by having decals on their cars in honor of the astronauts who were killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster two weeks earlier, similar to the 1986 Daytona 500, in which they paid tribute to the fallen crew members of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. The race ended after 109 laps when rain had begun pouring on the track. Michael Waltrip won the race for the second time in three years, giving him his third NASCAR Winston Cup win; all of his wins to that point had been in races held at Daytona. It was the first of Waltrip's two wins in 2003, both coming in restrictor plate races (he later won the EA Sports 500 at Talladega in October for his fourth and last Cup win). For the first time since 1966, the race was stopped due to rain; at 272.5 miles, this was the shortest Daytona 500 ever. In the race, Ryan Newman had a wild accident in the tri-oval, where his No. 12 Dodge tumbled end-over-end. He was not injured in the crash. Following the incident, both Penske Racing and new manufacturer Dodge were investigated because of the quality of the car.
