Sports internships are among the best ways to gain experience, connections, and skills as you build your career. In addition to providing an excellent training ground for you to apply your abilities, they also offer organic opportunities to build a network that can help you get a job. Getting varied experiences through multiple sports internships is one thing; taking advantage of the opportunities they present is another.Today's guest on the WorkInSports Podcast is Alana Meraz, MLB International Partnership Activation Coordinator. Meraz graduated from Arizona State University in 2019 with a Business Sports and Media degree. Meraz's proactive embrace of sports internships and building her network played a big role in getting her a job in MLB within three years of earning her degree. How to Get a Job in Professional SportsWith only four prominent leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL) comprising around 30 teams each, jobs in professional sports are highly competitive and, therefore, notoriously difficult to obtain. From 2017-20, Meraz took five internships to establish herself and form a community of professional advocates. Those experiences included:• Phoenix Rising (Community Relations/Sponsorship Activation Intern)• Arizona State Athletics (Game Day Intern)• Arizona Public Services (Events Intern)• Sports as a Job (Social Media Marketing Intern)• ISL (Sponsorship and Tours Coordinator)Additionally, Meraz spent a year as a part-time game operations assistant with the Arizona Diamondbacks. While the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 provided an obstacle to getting her career started in earnest due to canceled events, she founded Latinx in Sports to build a community of professionals looking to break into the industry, which she still runs today. Her efforts landed her a Fan Experience Coordinator position with the US Soccer Federation in 2021, and she has been with MLB since 2022. On today's episode, Meraz and VP of Content and Engaged Learning Brian Clapp discuss:• How Meraz's sports internships set her up to get where she is now• What her day-to-day role as International Partnership Activation Coordinator consists of• Why Meraz founded Latinx in Sport• How important networking was for Meraz's career growth• What sports career advice she has for aspiring professionals looking to enter the industryEnjoy the full episode to learn how to get a job in professional sports. Her desire to be seen, heard, and respected. Her college experience was wanting to be a lawyer, she got a degree in science with a minor in business. How the world led her to architecture and business development. How she met her classically trained architect husband, I promise it's not what you think! When she decided to be in charge of her employment after losing a job and an impending pandemic. How she discovered the parts of entrepreneurship that she enjoyed. The ability for a business to change. “Just because you're doing this now doesn't mean you have to keep doing this forever. Your business can change.” How she found the National Speakers Association. The challenges she faced trying to speak on stages. Why she invested in a videographer to record her initial speeches to learn from them. Why she encourages others to make mistakes, “That's how you learn from them.” How she nurtures her network. Listen, subscribe and read show notes at www.OnTheSchmooze.com

Julie Brown is a high energy Keynote Speaker who teaches the importance of networking. She is also the author of This Sh*t Works: A No Nonsense Guide to Networking Your Way to More Friends, More Adventures, and More Success, as well as the host of the This Sh*t Works podcast. Prior to her burnout, Julie was overworking herself to the point that she jokingly was jealous of a woman who had awoken from a three day coma, because at least that woman got to sleep. She and her husband were working such hectic schedules that they would not see each other at all during the week. Everything changed when the pandemic hit and Julie realized that the hustle lifestyle had tricked her.    Hustle culture is causing people to overwork themselves until they burn out. Julie was going ‘balls to the wall' for everything every day of her life, except when it came to resting. She shares that the pandemic was a real wake up call, because she and her husband were unsure how they would ever go back to that jam-packed scheduled to the minute lifestyle. In addition to talking about Julie's burnout story, Cait and Julie talk about the importance of networking, how to build a community, and the underestimated strength of weak connections.    Have you ever thought a three day coma sounded appealing? Tune into today's episode of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast for a conversation with Julie Brown about building relationships, the dangers of hustle culture, and allowing yourself to rest.  Quotes • “Your question to me was, ‘Oh, do you have a burnout story?' And it was like, ‘Oh, you mean the time I was getting ready for work, and I heard the story about a woman who had just woken up from a three day coma. And I was jealous of her, because she got to sleep.' And then I said to myself, ‘well, that's what I need. I just need a well timed coma. And then I'll just rest and then I'll be able to get up and I'll be good to go.' And I knew something was wrong in my life where I didn't have time to rest unless there was a medically induced coma in my future.” (2:37-3:21 | Julie) • “There was a point when I was hoping for a coma that I said, ‘Why am I working so hard for someone else? Why do I have this drive to do this for someone else? Can I convert this energy into something else for myself?'.” (6:11-6:29 | Julie) • “You need to have that community in place before a crisis hits, because it's very hard to build a community in crisis.” (19:40-19:48 | Julie) • “Asking for what you need, what would be helpful to you, because you have already given back to your network, because your network wants to be there for you, is invested in your success, whether that success is your mental success, whether it's your financial success, that's not needy.” (21:01-21:19 | Julie) • “It's okay for us to be in places of need sometimes and be in places of abundance sometimes, as long as when we're in places of abundance, we are giving back to our community and giving back to our network.” (21:21-21:32 | Julie) • “If you are keeping score in your relationship, and you are always expecting tit for tat, you're never going to be happy.” (25:08-25:18 | Julie) • “I always tell people to build their network slowly and with purpose, because you cannot manage growing, fostering a number of relationships and do it correctly. And do it without getting tired, because managing relationships takes a lot of time and energy.” (40:04-40:28 | Julie)   Links https://cuely.ai/FRIED https://bearaby.com   Connect with Julie Brown: Website: https://sayhitojulie.com                    https://juliebrownbd.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/juliebrown_bd/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliebrownbd/   XOXO, C   If you know that it's time to actually DO something about the burnout cycle you've been in for too long - book your free consult today: bit.ly/callcait   https://friedtheburnoutpodcast.com/quiz   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

After serving a career in security forces, Brian Arrington retired from the United States Air Force ready for a new challenge. Landing a role with Wells Fargo as a business consultant right after retirement, Brian's successful transition is a testament to his hard work and determination. In 2019, Brian launched Vets2Industry, a non-profit dedicated to serving service members and their families. Today, Brian is the Director of Military Programs and Recruiting for Military Hiring Accelerator. The far-reaching impact of Vets2Industry is a product of Brian's own transition. Rewind back to March of 2018 when Brian stumbled upon a website called LinkedIn. His first connection led him to Centurion Military Alliance. From there, he connected with mentors who helped him navigate the transition beyond the TAP curriculum. Like many veterans who have transitioned before him, Brian thought his veteran status and leadership experience would be enough to land a role as a marketing manager – a position that required a background in marketing which Brian didn't possess. Through informational interviews, Brian realized that the skills he developed in the military would translate well to a consultant role. Intentional, consistent networking led him to a recruiter from Wells Fargo who was eager to hire a veteran for a business consultant role. When asked what his biggest challenge has been since leaving the military, Brian is quick to reply that an obstacle he faces now and faced while transitioning is not having a vast knowledge of companies. He tells a story about attending his first career fair and only going to the Amazon table because it was the one company he had heard of before. Recounting this story to others, he says lots of transitioning service members approach job fairs this way. He encourages everyone to visit all the tables, engage with the recruiters, learn about opportunities and build connections. Every organization has infrastructure, projects, operations and facilities. The idea for Vets2Industry began early in Brian's transition. Realizing that TAP wasn't enough and learning independently that there are over 40K VSOs, Brian wondered how many airmen he had failed as an NCO with his lack of awareness for the free resources beyond TAP. Over 100,000+ military-affiliated people have been served through resources offered by Vets2Industry. Their monthly networking events attract recruiters from all industries, and the webinars cover topics like salary negotiation, resume writing, TSP rollover, life insurance and budgeting. Every VSO featured on the website has been vetted. For those who would like to gain valuable skills, increase their marketability and strengthen their resumes, Vets2Industry needs volunteers. As the Director of Military Programs and Recruiting at Military Hiring Accelerator, Brian Arrington focuses his attention on finding great paying positions across the country for the military community. Brian oversees sourcing and runs the organization's SkillBridge program. Head over to the Lessons Learned for Vets YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22 to hear a bonus clip from Brian on how to rock your next networking event with Vets2Industry.You can connect with Brian on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianarrington933/Explore Vets2Industry resources at https://vets2industry.org/Browse the jobs board at Military Hiring Accelerator at https://www.militaryaccelerator.com/Connect with Brian about SkillBridge, internships and open positions by emailing him at brian.arrington@militaryaccelerator.com. And the guests we heard from shared their own stories of how they were able to do so by building their own dream careers and fluid businesses, gaining valuable perspectives on the future of work in the process. Each episode corresponded with a theme from the book, including fluidity, career success, and the components of the Fluid Career System: Spotting the Trends, Creating Your Compass, Preparing for Change, Networking Your Way to Your Path, and Building Hard and Soft Skills.  In this episode, we revisit key takeaways from the season and tie together the trends that emerged across the interviews and what they mean for the future of work in our new normal. Stacey believes in networking as an important marketing strategy and tool, and after writing a book about the principles she used in networking, Stacey shares several of these thoughts today! Key Takeaways: Networking is about meeting masses of people, and identifying those who strategically align with you. Networking is an investment of time. Networking is not selling, prospecting, recruiting, buying, etc.  Plan to network and work the plan. Tweetable Quotes: “Networking is a marketing strategy that will pay 10x forward when you truly understand how to show up.”  “I hear, ‘Networking doesn’t work. Now, complete transparency, all that really tells me is they don’t have a networking strategy.” “When you learn to harmonize your life with our business you end up realizing that you are never working and you’re always working.”  Resources: Instagram: @pivotpointadvantage Schedule a 15 minute call with Stacey:http://pivotpointadvantage.com/talktostacey ( http://pivotpointadvantage.com/talktostacey) If you’re ready to take yourself and your business to the next level and are interested in a coaching program that will get you there check out:http://pivotpointadvantage.com/iwantsuccess ( http://pivotpointadvantage.com/iwantsuccess)  Join an interactive environment to help you build the success you’ve always wanted with other like-minded, success-driven entrepreneurs, business owners, and sales professionals:https://facebook.com/groups/sellwithoutselling ( https://facebook.com/groups/sellwithoutselling)

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know that gets you the job. Does that feel uncomfortable to you? Maybe it sounds like this means you have to play in the old boys network (and as a leading women in tech, that just fills you with dread and well, who wants to play that game - that’s part of what we are changing right as women rise up in tech, right?!) But powerful relationships don’t have to mean back-room deals or job offers made to sons of men on the golf course.  As the hidden job market flourishes as a source of jobs, it is more important than ever that you get out there and network. Build real connections that will open doors to other connections, jobs and much more.  In a hyper connected world, your most important asset in your career is your network. It can overcome the endless application process. It can deal with the difficult career gap you have easily, and it can remove the need for yet another expensive qualification (which you don’t actually need, but you think you do need because how else do you stand out from 1000s of resumes)? Your network is your biggest asset, and yet for many of us, applying for a hundred jobs feels infinitely easier than reaching out and building this mythical all-problems-solved network that the world (and I ) are talking about. You're going to make mistakes, you're going to trip over your feet, you'll fall down but you're going to get back up and just do do do. Remember this? Perfect is the enemy of the good. That's kind of a subtle thing. But think about it. People will analyze things for months, months, months to get it just perfect to get it just so the best thing you can do is execute today. General MacArthur once said that an unfinished plan violently executed today. It is way better than the perfect plan executed a month from now. Go out and do it today. He has won numerous speaking awards.   Podcast Highlights Who is Jeffrey Gitomer? Jeffrey grew up in a family of business people and identifies as a businessman, not an entrepreneur. He had some great genes and was born smart enough to realize that he had to decide what to do with his mind. Everyday when he wakes up, he always does one or all of the following five things: Read, write, prepare, think, and create. How much do you do for yourself when you wake up? Everyone has a choice about what they do with their allocated time. Entrepreneur vs. Businessman A businessman is someone who has been in a family that has been in business for themselves for generations. Entrepreneurs are people who buy a franchise. Why do sales have a bad reputation? Jeffrey has done the work to understand sales and has sold millions of dollars worth of goods. Cold calling is a terrible place to make a sale, but a great place to learn selling. People don’t like to be sold, they like to buy. You have to engage them enough so they want to buy. Pressure, guilt, and manipulation are the reasons why sales have a bad reputation. It’s the classic case of the used car salesman. If you are consistent in your value message offerings, your business will grow. Anything less than weekly is not enough, you have to find ways to keep the message going. The art of sales is making the other person feel like they aren’t being sold. Letting Go Of The Sales Process The first thing you have to realize is that you have to let go of some of the things that you think the business won’t be able to live without. Napoleon Hill Jeffrey read Think and Grow Rich 10 times in 1972, after a while he understood Napoleon Hill’s philosophy and beliefs, while also working with a few other sales people on the same path. It all comes down to giving value first. There is life enhancing elements in the book that will make anyone who reads smile and do better. What do you want to do and how bad do you want to do it? Then, what are you willing to do to fulfill that emotion? Whoever wins, desired it more. Most people don’t have self confidence or self belief unless it is foisted on them by someone else. Deposit before withdrawal, give without expectation of anything in return. The best way to get a referral is to give one. There are five words that define someone’s ability to become successful: Imagination, desire, enthusiasm, confidence, and concentration. Concentration is the glue that makes everything happen. If you’re enthusiastic and committed, people will buy from you. Do things for love, not for money. Become so committed, you become emotional about it. Thoughts become things. In the episode: How to connect with people you really want to work with How to make smart gear purchases When and how to grow your team sustainably Some great online tools to help your business How to get recurring clients instead of one-off’s Steps you can take to increase your value and prices Quotes: “The biggest thing for me has been knowing the right people and building relationships years in advance of ever working with them... Try to get introduced but putting yourself in the same physical location or at events, like conferences, as other people that are doing cool stuff that’s how I have built my network of clients even before I needed them.” (7:02) “Two of my favorite things to do at a conference are to introduce people: So when you start to meet people and you meet a new person, introduce that person to someone that might overlap well with whatever it is they have going on because once you become that connector at an event, then people will kind of reciprocate in the same way and introduce you to people. And when I am ending a conversation with someone at an event or conference, I try to ask do you know of one person here that you think I should meet that would be perfect for X, Y or Z and then that gives you the next person to go talk to.” (13:10) “Really investing in your peers, certain people at your level, in a few years those people are going to be speaking at events and those people are going to be starting companies that can hire you. So, that’s kind of the process I have now.” (14:35) “I think it is important to be confident in your pricing and if you do play the low pricing game you’re just setting yourself up to compete with a bunch of other people as opposed to if your pricing yourself higher, typically those clients are better and you have less competition at that price point.” (32:07) Links: DIY Guy Video Caleb Wojcik Films Fizzle.co Follow Caleb Wojcik on Youtube | Twitter | Instagram Asana Active Campaign Boomerang for Gmail   Check out the full show notes page Stay up to date with everything we're doing at Studio Sherpas

At age 24, Gelie Akhenblit found that she highly disliked her job, and set out on a journey to find her true passion. “I am freakishly in love with networking,” Akhenblit says.  And so she made it her career.  In 2008, at age 27, Akhenblit founded Networking Phoenix, an online platform for professionals to connect with other professionals and meet at mixers and events.  Her self funded startup has boomed into a massive business with 500 events listed monthly, 33,000 members in the Phoenix area, and plans to expand both nationally and globally.    “The whole entrepreneurial endeavor,” Akhenblit explains frankly, “it is brutal.  It's devastating in many ways to your life because you have to give your all.  There are many dark times but you learn a lot.”  Not just about yourself, but what it is like to dig deep and be an entrepreneur.   Akhenblit is a Russian Jewish refugee from the former Soviet Union.  Her parents brought her to the United States at the age of 8.  She says her background molded her into the type of person who chases dreams. “If there is a better option somewhere, anything less than that is not really a choice.  My parents didn't give up their lives to bring me here to be any kind of mediocre.” When she left that corporate job at the age of 24 to start “networking”, Akhenblit never questioned whether or not it was the right thing to do.  She just went for it.  “I've built my entire life, my professional life, on networking.” But there is a big difference between networking and really bad promoting, she points out.  It is important that people focus on building relationships and friendships instead of just connections.     “The way to be interesting, is to be interested in other people,” she advises.  “It's not about your business card or your company, it's about you as a person.  Your personal brand, your why, and your story is huge.  It is networking.” The post The Secrets To Networking Your Way To Success appeared first on Inspired Media 360 TV - Inform | Inspire | Engage.

Networking is Important in Business Today I want to talk a little bit about networking. Networking is absolutely crucial not only to expand your contacts to your sales, etc…but also to grow, grow in your skills and grow in your life. It’s a key essential ingredient to meet people that you can learn from and grow with. You can also grow just from the association. Growth may be in different areas: Like the business you’re trying to transact Growth of you as a person. You may want to learn new skills, develop better habits or you’d want to do new things. The third one, may be just for fun. Whatever extracurricular activities you may be interested it. To get to know more people and enjoy it more. Remember the episode about the 5 people closest to you. About the fact that you’re the average of them. Jim Rohn talked about  your income being the average of their income. It’s also your environment, your attitude, your opportunities, the way you talk or the way you speak, you’re the average of your friends. Let’s talk about going beyond that. Who do you know and how do you know them? When it comes to networking start out with the people that you know, you can then expand from there. Think about what you need or do or grow in life. You can reach out to someone who may be a “warm contact”, someone that you’ve met a couple of times. Ask for advice in certain situations. You’ll need to realize that it’s not just about you. The person may be very busy but you can find ways to get to know them or introduce yourself or get introduced. You can reach out to them through Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. Follow them and connect with them. Ask insightful questions. One of the key things, whether you’re networking or want to go on a date, asking questions and listening more than talking is essential. In successful interviews, the person who is successful is the one, 90% of the time, asking insightful questions. Not just talking about themselves. Look at somebody’s bio, don’t take that as absolute, but look to see if their bio has something that you might be interested in. You may look to see if they’ve done something that’s interesting or they may know someone who can meet your interest. These could also be things that you don’t want to do, things you want to avoid. It’s okay, but learn from people’s bios to get to know them and then approach them with a positive proper attitude. Approach them with those positive insightful questions but truly be interested in them. If you’re not interested in them and just looking to make your next contact that’s not good for them and they will perceive that difference. Most people that get jobs don’t really ask for a job, they may just go for an informational interview. The same attitude goes for making contacts. Not all people are great talkers. Some are introverted and some are very shy. How do you get over that? I used to be very shy. That was one of my major weaknesses. Questions about that go back to that episode on weaknesses. Don’t accept these weaknesses. When you’re at the shopping mall, at the counter, when you see someone looking at something you’re interested in ask them about that. Just practice. You might be a Barnes and Noble, you may be going for the same magazine that someone else is looking at, and do you have a question that you might need an answer for? How does this magazine get into this topic? What would you suggest? You can pick a variety of safe places to start talking to strangers – a shopping mall or even in church. At http://www.meetup.com/ or classes at school, whatever you’re interested in. If you go into something like this, you might want to learn more about speaking. Go to Toastmasters as one place. A good suggestion, go somewhere to a class or where you interact but don’t go with a friend. Why? If you do, you might end up just sitting there and talking with your friend the whole time. Other people might feel left out or that you’re un...

"True networking is where you are more interested in what the other person is getting out of the relationship than what you get." - David Bradford About: David Bradford - Executive Chairman of HireVue, Author of Up Your Game: 6 Timeless Principles for Networking Your Way to the Top Overview: David is an experienced entrepreneur who has mastered networking by simply giving before he recieves. He shares the 6 principles for networking your way to the top, which can be found in his book. He also shares his experience working with Infusion.io, Steve Wozniak, and HireVue. David Bradford | Ever Gonzalez   Highlights: What is HireVue: It is the largest digital interviewing platform in the world. In order to find great candidates for the job, HireVue helps large companies simplify the interviewing process- find better talent faster, and save money for the company. HireVue aims to eliminate the bad interviews through online interviews, sort of like a Skype on steroids, that involves an entire rating system, recording system, and other methodologies that employers can create. Biggest Challenge: Once HireVue had the right people on board, it was important/challenging for them to find the right companies to get onboard. When they were able to obtain large corporations as clients, it helped well-known entities feel confident in using HireVue as well. End Game for HireVue: HireVue believes that they are the next greatest online HR company. They are trying to gather and bring back greater personality to the entire interview process. Nothing is more important to a company or CEO than finding amazing talent. Working with Steve Wozniak: David was able to work with Steve when David was chairman of a company called Infusion.io. When asked how he was able to get Steve to work with him, David shares, "True networking is where you are more interested in what the other person is getting out of the relationship than what you get." He states that with that attitude, at some point the law of reciprocity is going to help you out. And with Steve, David simply implemented the idea of true networking. (To learn more about this story, check out David's Book) Up Your Game: 6 Timeless Principles for Networking Your Way to the Top: David has been blessed by relationships in his life and has constantly strived to surround himself with inspiring people. He started this book in an effort to help others learn how to network effectively. In May of 2014 he launched the book, and has had great success with it since. However, David is more happy with the personal feedback that he has had with his book and how many people he's been able to help. Some of the principles include: 1- Start your network by giving with no thought of getting, 2- show up, 3- follow up, 4- link up by connecting with people and forming meaningful relationships and organizing those contacts, 5- stand up, by being a person of integrity and character, and 6- scale up, by working hard at forming, building, and nurturing your network. Advice for Entrepreneurs: You simply have to be interested in other people- ask basic questions and get to know them. As you begin asking others those questions, people will naturally begin to ask questions about you and as the conversation moves forward, people will begin to build trust with you. It's vital for you to build strong relationships with others as you network, and as you do so, you will become successful. Networking is one of the things I cannot imagine living without. It's likely the most valuable marketing piece I have. If you've EVER listened to this show before you know I'm a huge fan of networking to help build communities, foster relationships, and really grow businesses (not just yours). Today we dive into networking, what to do, what to avoid. And really why you're not that important when it comes to introducing yourself. A little about Erin… Erin Smith started her entrepreneur journey over 13 years ago when she started investing in real estate across the country. Since then she has started several other businesses in various industries and sold them. After being told time and time again by others they would like to start a business, but just didn't know how, she launched The Staters Club. It's a place to learn business fundamentals, and get whatever business you dream of building, off the ground and making you money. Erin is also a speaker who teaches about business and what it means to really follow your heart.
