My very special guest today has known the highest high and the lowest low a ski racer can experience, and handled both moments with style and grace. She pulled off the run of a lifetime at the perfect venue, the roars of the home-country crowd exhorting her to victory in Vail, crushing the field despite starting 30th. There were no crowds - no witnesses of any kind - when an unidentified course worker slammed into her just 45 minutes before her scheduled start at the Calgary Olympics, breaking her fibula and dashing a lifetime of dreams. Always a team player and a class act, Pam Fletcher stayed in Calgary to cheer her teammates on.

Obsessions that spark childhood creativity and end up being key points in your life....can get a little scary once you grow up.On this episode we dive into the practicalities of making a childhood dream come to life  It's time for 'I Have Nothing'.This series follows Carolyn on a comical quest to choreograph the perfect, full-length pairs figure skating routine to Whitney Houston's 1992 iconic hit song, “I Have Nothing.”   Motivated by a teenaged obsession for the 1988 Calgary Olympics that also sparked Carolyn's queer awakening, I HAVE NOTHING begins as a lighthearted nostalgic comedy and quickly morphs into a high-stakes, real-life mission for Carolyn, with a few wild detours along the way. At first you think it's just a bit, and then we you realize that it isn't "just" a bit and she's trying to do this for real it becomes all the more intense and hilarious.  With a myriad of figure skating luminaries joining Carolyn on this quest, I Have Nothing is hilarity that is just hard to look away from.We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with Carolyn in advance of the show releasing on Crave to talk about the origins of the story, sharing this very earnest obsession with the world and so very much more....

Eighty Eight Brewing’s Jordan Saracini joins the podcast this week for a chat about the Olympics, 80s music, nostalgia, pizza, and of course excellent craft beer.Jordan and his partners’ origin story is a common one in the craft beer industry - a group of friends who started homebrewing together back in late 2013. The level at which they started brewing was a little less common however, skipping over brewing kits and jumping straight to whole grain. Within just a few years they’d decided to take their brews public, incorporating Eighty Eight Brewing in 2017 and opening the doors the following year. When this episode releases their two year anniversary is just around the corner on August 22nd.Anyone who has visited the taproom or even seen their cans will be immediately familiar with the brewery’s iconic design. The branding is heavily inspired by the 1988 Calgary Olympics (if the name wasn’t a dead giveaway) as well as all things ‘80s. This theme runs deep, from their labelling to their beer names to the decor in the taproom. If amazing beer and artwork wasn’t enough, Eighty Eight is also famous as the home of Noble Pie, which Jordan describes as “on a whole other level” and clearly many folks agree with him, since it is not uncommon for people to line up at the taproom before the doors have even opened to get one of their own.Our nostalgia theme continues into our chat with Mama T, when we exchange some celebrity impressions, and discuss who on Beverly Hills 90210 we would have dated. We also theorize on what it might be like to add mandatory alcohol to professional sports.— Have a question for Mama T? A story from the bottom of a beer can? The Calgary Olympic bid has been a dishonest mess from the very beginning. It’s become a Frankenstein monster, roughly sewn together in order to realize Mayor Naheed Nenshi’s dreams of a global scale legacy party for himself, paid for by the taxpayers of Canada. News of leaked conversations, secret meetings, behind the scenes deals, and duelling taxpayer federation associations cross-endorsing each other's cities, have solidified opposition to the bid and turned patriotic fans of the olympics into cynics. Over the course of 24 hours, the bid has been dead, resurrected, and then maybe dead again. It’s changing by the minute and costing money every step of the way. Join me tonight as I speak with William McBeath from Save Calgary, in an interview that we recorded Tuesday morning, way back when the Olympic bid was still dead in its grave. Watch as William explains how Calgary taxpayers got so far into this mess in the first place, and what we can do next to stop the bleeding at Calgary city hall.

While most will agree the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games was an overall success and good for the City, Alberta and Canada, the bidding cost alone for the 2026 Games will be at least $30 million and the expenses for hosting the Games if Calgary is chosen, could top $8 billion, including interest, considering all three levels of Government are running deficits – hosting the 1988 Games cost less than $1 billion and turned a profit. The Alberta and Federal Governments have made their contribution to the 2026 Calgary Olympics conditional on a Nov 13, 2018 City of Calgary plebiscite. The non-binding plebiscite will offer two choices – for or against Calgary hosting. There are other key points to be sorted out as the City can't rely completely on its 1988 Winter Olympic infrastructure – a new hockey arena and other facilities are needed – and there are still questions about hosting some events outside of Calgary – possibly Whistler, B.C., and Edmonton. While hosting the 2026 Olympics and Paralympic Winter Games will no doubt generate a lot of economic investment and activety in the City of Calgary, the speaker will argue that all taxpayers will end up covering expenses to the tune of several billion dollars for operations, infrastructure and paying off the “mortgage” for such Olympics, including a whopping $1 billion for security measures He will also address whether or not Albertans get “bang for their buck” from such investments and if these expenses will be making proper and lasting use of tax dollars? Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up ..... It's Bobsled Time! Coooooooool Runnings!  Happy Winter Olympics everyone! We celebrated by watching this epic underdog film from 1993.  Based on true events - there was a real Jamaican bobsled team that slid their way to the Calgary Olympics in 1988. Starring John Candy and some no name but incredibly charismatic faux Jamaicans actors, this movie taught us that it's not always about winning and that even if you've never seen snow or ice or even a bobsled before, that shouldn't stop you from achieving your Winter Olympic dreams! We'll chat about all the scary sled events at the Winter Olympics, induct Junior into the Sweetie Club, and try to come to a consensus of why white dudes were running around in the mid 90s with Rastafarian caps with fake dreads!  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. “They might even replace the dog as the family pet.” ‘Tis the holiday season, which means it's time for another Next Reel Christmas movie, and how better to share in the joy and festivities of the Christmas season than with some wacky laughs and slimy gore from Joe Dante's 1984 horror comedy “Gremlins.” Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we celebrate another end of the year with some holiday cheer (and mayhem), this time with Gizmo, Stripe, Billy, Kate, Mrs. Deagle, Barney and the rest of the residents of Kingston Falls (aka Universal's backlot). We talk about our impressions of this film from when we were young and how those changed (or didn't) since then. We chat about the actors, from Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates to Polly Holliday and Howie Mandel, and what they brought to the table. We discuss Jerry Goldsmith's score and why it works really well for Andy while not so much for Pete. We talk about Chris Walas and his creature effects, and banter about the script and how it really is pretty simplistic. And we touch on what Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and Chris Columbus all bring to the table here. It's a fun film, one that certainly seems to have held up better for Andy than it has for Pete, and definitely fun to talk about. Check the movie out then tune in! Sure, she's had some fumbles, but I will always give her a chance. The fact that this is based on a true story makes it all the more interesting to me. Plus, Alfred Molina with a great big bushy beard!” Pete's Trailer: Eddie the Eagle — “Hugh Jackman as the crotchety coach of an underdog British ski jumper in the Calgary Olympics. Sure, it might be saccharine. But when he says ‘fly…'… yeah, that's going to be a tear jerker.”
