We've got a new mixtape of tracks as fresh as a cleanly shaved face. Rob brought a few tracks from the Madden series, including "Title Theme" from John Madden Football '92, which has some very cool crunchy bass that the Genesis excels at. That is followed by a very catchy and melodic track ("Stage Theme 6") from Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu for the NES. Your cleanly shaved face
Since the 1988 release of John Madden Football, the Madden franchise has been one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. It had spent over 20 years as the only American football video game licensed by the National Football League. The latest edition was developed by EA Orlando and published by EA Sports. If it's in the games, it's in the game. The brothers talk a lot about the history of the early years of Madden, their prime years of playing in the early to mid 2000s, and what the game is like now.Pete recalls winning a game and running up and down the hall in celebration. Tom boasts the most Super Bowl rings in the many franchises played by the brothers. They also discuss how each of their play styles were quite different from one another. Madden not only provided hundreds of hours of fun and frustration for the brothers, but also taught them about football. For this episode's poll question, let us know what is your favorite Big Game snack? Travel back with us to the one-yard line where it all started as we revisit the first Madden game on home consoles with John Madden Football on the Sega Genesis! Originally joked about by being called "Trip's Folly" (named after Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins), it was a game which was deceptive in its intricacies, and the first fully functioning football video game to incorporate 11 players per team. But just because it's the first doesn't necessarily mean it's the best. We take to the field to find out if this pig skin pioneer is still worth playing against the likes of games like Madden 23. Plus, we talk about the state of the modern Madden franchise, talk Overwatch loot boxes, and explore the history of how Madden almost didn't get made. We also spend some time learning all about John Madden, and following his career up until his involvement with the video game series. Fan Controlled Football (FCF) just scored a $40 million Series A financing round from crypto kings Animoca Brands and Delphi Digital. But FCF is not just a Web3/NFT/blockchain story (although it is that too). FCF is the ultimate John Madden football - where fantasy football meets IRL. Founder/CEO Sohrob Farudi joins me to discuss it all - and how their tech empowers thousands of fans to not only crowd-source (and decide) a team's name and logo, but also to call the plays for real football players who play on real football fields - all in real time. FCF even gives fans an opportunity to invest in a fractional share of ownership of the team they help to build. FCF is a fascinating company that brings to life the true, full promise of the metaverse - integrating virtual worlds with the physical world into one seamless experience where the fans control everything. And there is no more special bond than fans with their favorite sports teams. Learn more about FCF at https://www.fcf.io/ Learn more about me and CREATV Media.

If you like butt-ugly cavemen, then have we got the game for you! But before we get to that, we need to talk about John Madden Football '93. It's more American football! Yay if you're into that sort of thing! We are not! We also discuss Cyber Spin. It turns out that Cyber Spin is not a tennis or golf game, it's a pretty bland F-1 game that's meant to be kinda futuristic. What isn't bland is the company that made the game, Arc System Works. Maybe you've heard of them? Last and possibly least, we have Chuck Rock. A game that would be merely uninteresting if it didn't feature such a repellent protagonist. Not the best lot we've ever tackled but some there are at least some interesting facts about the companies that made them.

While the appeal of games may be universal and satisfy our innate desire to play, the powerful dynamics that govern our behavior within games is even more interesting than the play itself. Can we broaden our understanding of play mechanisms by applying the subliminal mechanics of play beyond games? In this episode, Christopher Weaver, Founder of Bethesda Softworks and who teaches engineering and computational media respectively at MIT and Wesleyan, explores these important issues in a lecture entitled “Amplius Ludo, Beyond the Horizon”. Prof. Weaver discusses how games work and why they are such potent tools in areas as disparate as military simulation, childhood education, and medicine. Christopher Weaver is Research Scientist and Lecturer, MIT Comparative Media Studies, Visiting Scientist and Lecturer, MIT Microphotonics Center and Distinguished Professor of Computational Media at Wesleyan University. Weaver received his SM from MIT and was the initial Daltry Scholar at Wesleyan University, where he earned dual Masters Degrees in Japanese and Computer Science and a CAS Doctoral Degree in Japanese and Physics. The former Director of Technology Forecasting for ABC and Chief Engineer to the Subcommittee on Communications for the US Congress, Weaver founded Bethesda Softworks, and developed a physics-based, realtime sports engine used to create the original John Madden Football for Electronic Arts. Bethesda is well known for The Elder Scrolls role-playing series of which Skyrim was the latest major installment. An adviser to both government and industry, Weaver holds patents in interactive media, security, and telecommunications engineering.
We talk a lot about the history of a popular manga series in Japan, a long-running Japanese TV superhero, an arcade classic, and an old tabletop game about football. We discuss a lot of things that happened in the 80s! And I guess we talk about some Super NES games as well.

We’re joined by EA’s founder Trip Hawkins to tell the incredible story of how he built the company that made video games mainstream. Starting from his high school years as both a geek and a jock, to then working for Steve Jobs as one of Apple Computer’s first employees and later completely changing the world of sports with John Madden Football, Trip always had a clear vision for what EA could become and what magic could happen at the intersection of technology and the liberal arts. Think you know music? Think again! David speaks with video game composer Rob Hubbard to speak on his career. Learn about how he mastered creating complex compositions within the limits of the Commodore 64, and how he brought his talents to America to work for Electronic Arts. Rob Hubbard was responsible for beloved music from games such as Monty on the Run, Skate or Die, Road Rash, John Madden Football, and so many more! This episode of ARGcast Mini is even filled with samples of his music for you to enjoy. Few musicians in the gaming industry have as wide or impressive of a body of work that spans across console generations from the Commodore 64 to the Sega Genesis. Our conversation covers his beginnings in the gaming industry, how he comes up with such complicated pieces, his decision to make the move to America to work for Electronic Arts instead of working on Amiga titles, and more.
