I would say that, for the most part, there's very little we won't play - but we also know what we like, and especially what we don't like. Tune in here to this Thursday edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking with USMC veteran, Commandant Tom Gordon from The Military Academy of South Carolina, better known as the Citadel, about people who get to sit in the emergency row on airline flights that get a little extra leg room and a lot more responsibility. They discuss flight 1549 that was struck by a bird, disabling one of the plane's engines, resulting in its emergency landing in New York's Hudson River. Commandant Gordon uses this story to discuss leadership and keeping calm under pressure. Coincidently, the man who found himself in the emergency row on this day was Citadel alumnus Mark Hood. This highlights the Citadels key goal of developing resilient and virtuous leaders to fill the gaps in modern society. For more wisdom from Commandant Gordon check out his book "Marine Maxims: Turning Principles into Practice." Listen here for all of this and more on The Brett Winterble Show! I am a big fan of card games. Having grown up in Germany, a deck of cards was usually not far away. Playing trick-taking games was part of my youth, whether with the family or friends. I love card games in general and my love was rekindled when I was introduced to the modern hobby with games such as Citadels or Love Letter. I also found many new trick-taking games, but a genre that was new to me was so-called ladder-climbing games. In this article, I want to look at these fascinating games in more detail. Welcome to the latest episode of Cult of the Old! Each episode your hosts Iain McAllister, Matt Thrower, and Nate Owens are going to turn back the clock to look at games that are at least 10 years old. They'll give their own critical impressions, tell you about the history of the game and its impact, and what relevance these games still have in the modern hobby landscape. Bernhard Muller, General Manager and Founder of BSV payments processor Centi, thinks the key to creating a popular, scalable product is ensuring that anyone will be able to use it, not just people who are interested in Bitcoin. “We really want to design a product for everyone, my mum, my brother, my uncle, everyone who doesn't know about Bitcoin, who doesn't care about Bitcoin even,” he says. He believes that Centi's simplicity will be its USP and will enable it to be rolled out to a range of different customers who haven't necessarily used Bitcoin or integrated it into their business model before. For example, he tells Charles Miller on this week's episode of CoinGeek Conversations that he is purposefully targeting the media and events industries, through the launch of Centi's ‘space concept'. This feature will allow merchants to customise pages on the app so users can buy tickets and merchandise quickly and easily online. “For example, if you want to sell a consumer a hamburger at the event, you can basically purchase the product digitally, directly in the app and then you just need to go and collect it rather than standing in line somewhere.” The peer-to-peer nature of Bitcoin helps to ensure that transactions are extremely quick and direct, and if both customer and merchant have Centi enabled, the funds go straight from one to another, without travelling through any custodians or middlemen. So far, there are three onboarded merchants who are using the service commercially; one is a bar, one is a ramen noodle store, and one is a clothes shop, but Bernhard hopes to have at least a thousand merchants by the end of 2023. While this might sound ambitious, he explains that they already have strategies in place to work with other partners who already have a long list of customers. He also hopes that the straightforwardness of the product, thanks to a recent redesign, will prove to be a winning combination for commercial clients. But, just in case that wasn't enough to attract new users, he's incorporated a faucet into the app. This means that anyone using the Centi app can receive 1 Swiss Franc (approximately 1 US dollar) just for signing up. Bernhard explains that faucets were big in Bitcoin in the early days and are aimed at getting people to experience the product without needing to connect their finances to the app. He's excited about the potential he sees for getting outsiders involved in Bitcoin SV and references the BSV Global Blockchain Convention as an example of how much opportunity there is, especially in comparison to how it used to be. “The first conference we had in London after this whole split ordeal between BSV and BCH happened, I mean, it was a tiny group of people, I don't know maybe a hundred, two hundred people that were there and now this has grown substantially with all these ambassadors and Block Dojos' and Citadels.”

The third and final installment of our American Healthcare series examines the evolution of the American hospital system. There are more than 6,000 hospitals in the United States and several distinctions among them. After a quick recap of the first two episodes, we look primarily at the peculiar designation of nonprofit hospitals, their relationship to practitioners and their role in driving costs in the system. We conclude the series with a few hot takes from medical professionals, some basic proposals to improve coverage and care and ask what it would take to move toward Medicare for All. A conversation with Joel (Untapped Growth) about the fight between good evil, modern warfare and how it applies to building citadels.
Peter Young is a bitcoiner with a particular interest in Austrian Economics and working on new models for social organization, which he does primarily through his work with the 'Free Private Cities' project. We are both interested in the 'citadel' idea, where people the world over have more choices available to them when deciding where to live. As this is becoming an increasingly relevant issue in today's world, I thought it would be interesting to speak with Peter, get his opinion on things, and be brought up to date on the state of this emerging 'private city' phenomenon. This article is the third chapter in Svetski's series "12 Rules for Bitcoin" where he takes lessons from Jordan Peterson's "12 Rules for Life" and applies those principles to Bitcoin, the lesson here being "Make Friends With People Who Want The Best For You". Throughout the discussion, these speakers explore how Bitcoiners embody the principle of wanting the best for their peers, Bitcoiner toxicity and how it strengthens the convicted Bitcoin community, free private cities and what Bitcoin citadel communities could look like in the future, and much more. Hubris. Denial. Power. Philosopher Martha Nussbaum sees all those things leading to Andrew Cuomo's resignation as governor of New York. But most of all, she sees the monumental power of pride. In her new book "Citadels of Pride" Nussbaum examines how a culture of mountainous self-regard perpetuates sexual abuse. Nussbaum joins Meghna Chakrabarti.
Bitcoin has a tendency to radically reshape ones perspective on many things, and how we grow our food, and care for the land it's raised on, is no exception. In this episode I'm joined by two men who are leveraging the unique attributes of bitcoin, and the fresh perspective it has inspired in them, to develop a new approach to cattle ranching, and simultaneously support the efforts of many aspiring bitcoiners in their ambitions to build their 'Citadel'. BTC $ 34,519 Today's guest on the show is an actual Austrian Austrian Economist Rahim Taghizadegan the President of Free Private Cities and founder of Scholarium. Join Rahim and I as we take a wander through the world of Austrian Economics and what bought him to this school of thought during his studies. What is it about the Austrian school of thought that differs to mainstream economics and why do Keynesian economists find it so difficult to accept? What part of the #Bitcoin rabbit hole did Rahim first fall into and how did that match with what he had learnt through the study of Austrian Economics? What are Free Private Cities and how do Rahim and I envisage the 'Citadels' of the future? Is the #education system broken and what is being done to fix it? A reason that abusers are able to continue to abuse is that the institutions they are affiliated with protect them. Martha C. Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, and she joins host Krys Boyd to talk about how pride, narcissism and toxic masculinity are hallmarks of abusers, and how these men have created a world that largely shields them from responsibility. Her book is called “Citadels of Pride: Sexual Abuse, Accountability, and Reconciliation.”
Has the #MeToo movement run into trouble? The renowned philosopher and author of “Citadels of Pride: Sexual Abuse, Accountability, and Reconciliation” talks to Anne McElvoy about the moral complexities of mass-sharing experiences of sexual assault and shaming of alleged perpetrators. Also, can rules of consent keep up with behaviour? And, as a music buff, what's her favourite philosophical opera? Please subscribe to The Economist for full access to print, digital and audio editions:www.economist.com/podcastoffer See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Oleg Benesch and Ran Zwigenberg's coauthored Japan's Castles: Citadels of Modernity in War and Peace (Cambridge University Press, 2019) uses the fate of castles after the Meiji coup of 1868 as a case study to explore aspects of Japan's modern history including historical memory, cultural heritage, and state-civil society and national-regional relations. The authors show that although castles entered the modern era as a symbol of the dark “feudal” past Japan hoped to leave behind, they quickly took on a diverse set of functions and meanings. According to Benesch and Zwigenberg, urban castles in particular—such as those in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya—were important to the formation of both national and regional identities, playing key symbolic and practical roles as parks, military garrisons, representations of various collective pasts, etc. Especially as society was militarized in the 1930s, castles came to be celebrated as a unification of modernity and tradition, the imperial and local, military and civilian. Though the political climate and the valences of Japan's recent and more distant pasts were thrown into upheaval with war and defeat, even after 1945 castles retained a literally and figuratively large footprint in Japan. The authors explore the divergent histories of castles including Hiroshima, Kanazawa, and Kokura and the “castle boom” of the early postwar decades to illustrate ongoing tensions between visions for individual regions and Japan itself in the period of national rebuilding that followed World War II, and conclude with reflections on the significance of the current wave of castle reconstructions with “authentic” materials and techniques in the context of growing global interest in cultural heritage as a kind of intellectual property that conveys both soft power and hard currency. Whether dismantled or garrisoned or transformed into munitions factories or parks, and whether original, bombed, rebuilt, or conjured up as roadside attractions, Benesch and Zwigenberg show that the shifting circumstances and meanings of castles can teach us much about Japan's modern history.

We have a great write up on the AIE wiki with information on our policies for your submitted articles. http://wiki.aie-guild.org/index.php?title=The_AIEGC_Website http://forum.myextralife.com/topic/54051-aiegc-has-opened-the-doors-to-the-community-writers Keltian has started a discussion around Blizzcon 2016 on the forums, asking who's going and how their experience with Universe was for trying to get tickets. http://forum.myextralife.com/topic/57120-whos-going-to-blizzcon Looking to meet folks in real life and seeing what activities the guild has planned?
