Vorige week moest hij noodgedwongen afscheid nemen als Amsterdams wethouder wonen en stedelijke ontwikkeling. We spreken over 'de gouden bestekbak' waarin hij opgroeide, zijn wens voor Amsterdam, de 'koekwausen in Den Haag', we luisteren naar de woorden van zijn vader en die van burgemeester Halsema en we dromen over wolkenkrabbers van hout.

Het COA is naarstig op zoek naar meer opvanglocaties. Maar hoe vind je die plekken en wat betekent het als je moet onderhandelen met een partij die regelmatig de hoofdprijs kan vragen? Deze aflevering in het kort:⇨ Vastgoedontwikkelaar bij het COA, hoe werkt dat?⇨ Minder vakantieparken, meer blijvende locaties⇨ De EXPO REAL is weer begonnenMaarten Schaepman werkt als vastgoedregissieur bij het COA. Aan hem de taak om nieuwe locaties te ontwikkelen, zodat de asielketen weer een beetje gaat doorstromen. Zijn afdeling is de laatste twee jaar fors gegroeid, van 15 naar ruim 40 vastgoedontwikkelaars maar liefst. Door de crisis in de opvang is het COA regelmatig aangewezen op noodlocaties, zoals vakantieparken en hotels. Dat blijkt regelmatig peperduur. ‘We staan vaak met de rug tegen de muur en kunnen niet de beste prijs uit de markt onderhandelen', aldus Schaepman. En met permanent bedoelen we locaties van minimaal vijf jaar. Het liefst ontwikkelen we zelfs voor 30 jaar, omdat de businesscase dan beter uitkomt', aldus Schaepman. Dan moet er wel iets veranderd worden in de financieringsstructuur. Het CAO wordt door het rijk nu betaald per beslapen bed. Martin Grötschel, born in 1948, studied mathematics at U Bochum (1969-1973), received his PhD in economics (1977) and his habilitation in Operations Research (1981) at U Bonn. He was professor of applied mathematics at U Augsburg 1982-1991, professor of information technology at TU Berlin and vice president/president of the Zuse Institute for Information Technology Berlin (ZIB) 1991-2015. Grötschel was the President of the German Mathematical Society (DMV) 1993-1994, Secretary General of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) 2007-2014, President of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) 2015-2020 and chaired the DFG Research Center MATHEON “Mathematics for Key Technologies” 2002-2008. He has held numerous further science administration and advisory positions. Grötschel's main areas of research are discrete mathematics, optimization, and operations research. He has made, e.g., contributions to polyhedral combinatorics and to the development of methods proving the polynomial time solvability of optimization problems. He has also focused on the design of practically efficient algorithms for hard combinatorial optimization problems appearing in practice, such as the travelling salesman, the max-cut, the linear ordering, and various connectivity problems. Cutting plane algorithms for integer programming are among his favorites. The application areas include telecommunications, chip design, energy, production planning and control, logistics, and public transport. He has been an open access and open science activist and is currently involved in fostering digital humanities. Grötschel's scientific achievements were honored with several distinctions including the Cantor Medal, the Leibniz, the Beckurts, the Dantzig, the Fulkerson, and the John von Neumann Theory Prize. He holds four honorary degrees and is a member of seven scientific academies, including the US National Academy of Engineering. In 2021, Ms. Léonard was honoured to be appointed as Director of the RWB's Anna McCowan-Johnson Aspirant Program. She received her early training from the Edmonton School of Ballet and the RWB School Professional Division before being hired into the RWB Company in 1997. During a fifteen-year career, Ms. Léonard portrayed the lead female role in many well-known works; the first of such roles was in David Nixon's Butterfly when Nixon picked her from the corps de ballet to perform the lead. In the 2001/02 season she worked with Sir Peter Wright to dance the dramatic and technical role of Giselle. Other roles that Ms. Léonard enjoyed dancing include Odette/Odile in Galina Yardonova's staging of Swan Lake, Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Lucy in Mark Godden's Dracula, Pamina in Mark Godden's The Magic Flute, the tender Cours D'Amour in Mauricio Wainrot's Carmina Burana and the lead role of Nancy in Val Caniparoli's A Cinderella Story. Ms. Léonard is known for roles that have been created on her including Tinker Bell in Jorden Morris' Peter Pan; Destiny in Mauricio Wainrot's Carmen, The Passion; March Hare in Shawn Hounsell's Wonderland; and Natalie in Jorden Morris's Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet. In 2009 Ms. Léonard danced the role of Juliet in Rudi van Dantzig's Romeo & Juliet for which she was called “simply stunning” by the Winnipeg Free Press. Ms. Léonard has appeared as a guest artist internationally, performing in galas with the Compania Nacional de Danza in Mexico City, the Benios De La Danse in Moscow, the 10th and 13th International Ballet Festivals of Miami, and the Encore International Dance Festival in Quebec. She has also been invited to dance with various companies and schools in full-length productions of Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty in Canada, the USA and Spain. In 2009, Peter Quanz selected Ms. Léonard to perform a new piece called In Tandem at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and at the 2010 Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa. As part of the Cultural Olympiad for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games she performed the lead in Iztik Galili's Hikarizatto. Since retiring from dance in 2013, Ms. Léonard has staged and coached many ballets for the RWB Company, Professional Division and Aspirant program. She has also staged full length ballets for Orlando Ballet, Louisville Ballet and the National Ballet of Cuba and has enjoyed guest teaching for schools and companies around the world.

Mais à quand remonte une telle pratique ?Les Américains, précurseurs du sondage d'opinionOn peut trouver des ancêtres du sondage dans l'Antiquité. On a ainsi retrouvé, sur les murs de Pompéi, des slogans vantant les qualités de candidats aux élections municipales et invitant à voter pour eux.À l'époque contemporaine, c'est aux États-Unis que le sondage d'opinion est né. C'est à l'occasion des élections présidentielles de 1936 que George Gallup, à la tête de son nouvel institut de sondage, recueille, pour la première fois, l'avis d'un groupe de personnes représentatif de la population américaine.Dans le même temps, un hebdomadaire organise une vaste consultation auprès des électeurs. On appelle ce type de référendums officieux un "vote de paille".En prévoyant la réélection de Roosevelt, c'est l'institut Gallup qui remporte la mise, alors que le journal avait annoncé la victoire de son concurrent. Ce succès confère d'emblée une légitimité certaine aux sondages d'opinion.En France aussiLe premier sondage d'opinion réalisé en France est presque contemporain de l'enquête américaine. On 8 March 2021, we held our second AMI Talk during which Silvia C. Dubovoy and Ama van Dantzig shared insights on equality and equity gained from their professional lives. Silvia shared an overview of the social movements and historical context that shape Montessori's particular brand of idealism. Silvia explored her ideas about the education of young girls and the link between the wellbeing of mother and child in the context of what we now know as Montessori theory and practice. In her daily life, Ama works with game-changers, pioneers and visionaries to create a brave new world. She strives to develop and support the ideas and interventions that unleash much needed societal shifts. Ama shared her passion for helping people find ingenious solutions for the challenges of our time. She also focused on the relevance of uniting people and communities in order to help leaders to take the steps to confront such challenges.

George Dantzig, uno de los matemáticos más importantes del siglo XX, dejó escrita en 1986 la curiosa historia de dos de sus grandes descubrimientos en el campo de la estadística. La historia sucedió en Berkeley un día de 1939 en el que George llegó tarde a la clase del profesor Jerzy Neyman. Al entrar, la clase ya había comenzado y el profesor había escrito dos problemas en la pizarra. Dantzig, pensando que se trataba de ejercicios para resolver en casa, los copió y resolvió durante los días posteriores. La sorpresa llegó al descubrir que no se trataba de “deberes” sino de retos matemáticos sin resolver.
