Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where each week we pull some movies off the shelf and recommend a few you might want to watch. This week's theme is sports comedies, specifically some great ones from the '80s that still hold up. If you're in the mood for underdogs, quirky characters, and a lot of laughs, these films should hit the spot. The Best of Times (1986)This one often flies under the radar, but it shouldn't. Starring Robin Williams and Kurt Russell, it's a heartfelt comedy about reliving past mistakes and trying to rewrite history on a small-town football field. Williams plays a guy still hung up on a dropped pass from years ago, and Russell is the former star quarterback who gets roped into a plan to replay the game. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, the movie balances humor with some surprisingly emotional moments. Major League (1989)A classic baseball comedy about a ragtag Cleveland Indians team that's supposed to fail but manages to surprise everyone. Charlie Sheen stars as “Wild Thing” Rick Vaughn, a pitcher with a blazing fastball and no control, alongside a great ensemble cast including Tom Berenger, Wesley Snipes, and Rene Russo. Directed by David S. Ward, the film has a sharp sense of humor but also doesn't shy away from celebrating the game itself. The film was so beloved it sparked two sequels, though neither quite captured the charm of the original.Caddyshack (1980)What's a sports comedy list without Caddyshack? Directed by Harold Ramis, this movie redefined the genre with its irreverent humor and unforgettable cast, including Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray. Set at a country club golf course, it's less about the game and more about the absurd characters and their crazy antics. One of my favorite characters, the gopher puppet, was added late in production and ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the film. If you haven't seen it or haven't watched it in a while, it's always worth revisiting.Wildcats (1986)Goldie Hawn leads this football comedy as Molly McGrath, a high school track coach who takes on the challenge of coaching a boys' varsity football team in a rough neighborhood. The film has a lot of charm, mostly thanks to Hawn's performance, which balances humor with just enough seriousness to make you root for her and the team. It's also an early film for Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who both went on to major careers. This was a great cable TV comedy and I watched it dozen of time on HBO and still bought in on VHS.That's the lineup for this week: The Best of Times, Major League, Caddyshack, and Wildcats. Each one brings something a little different to the table, but they all share a love for sports and comedy. Let me know what you think, and if there's a movie you'd like me us recommend, leave us a comment. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. As a suffering, lifelong Cleveland fan, filmmaker David S. Ward figured the only way the Indians would ever win the World Series is if he wrote a movie allowing them to do so. And it would need to be a comedy, of course, because “nobody would believe it as a drama.” Ward's dream came to fruition with 1989's “Major League,” the film that players will tell you is their favorite baseball movie hands down. With a touch of Crisco and a pinch of Bardol, baseball purist Jason Thompson joins Dennis to celebrate America's favorite pastime and discuss why this film gets all the little things right. Ward, the story focuses on one Cinderella season for the ballclub which is now under the control of a new owner (Margaret Whitton) who is determined to have them lose enough games to kill attendance so that she can move the franchise to Miami.  Lead by a new manager (James Gammon) and mostly populated with untested rookies, this rag-tag bunch ends up surprising a lot of folks by competing for the American League Pennant.  The roster includes Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes, Corbin Bernsen, and Rene Russo among several others.....PLAY BALL!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Episode 11 - The Born to Watch team gives their unique take on the 1989 sports/comedy - Major League. Starring Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Wesley Snipes, it follows the journey of a rag-tag band of misfits thrown together to lose and their road to redemption. Major League is the movie that confirmed I was an Aussie who loved baseball. Sure there was The Natural, but the misfit Indians are the reason I love baseball as much as I do today."Major League," released in 1989, is a beloved sports comedy that has stood the test of time, appealing to both die-hard baseball fans and those looking for a hearty laugh. Directed by David S. Ward, the film is set against the backdrop of America's favourite pastime, offering a blend of humour, heart, and the underdog spirit that resonates deeply with the audience. The plot is a classic underdog story: the new owner of the Cleveland Indians, Rachel Phelps, has a cunning plan to move the team to Miami. However, her scheme hinges on the team's performance being so poor that attendance falls below a critical threshold, allowing her to break the lease with the city of Cleveland. To achieve this, she assembles a team of misfits and has-beens, expecting them to be the worst in the league. The roster includes aging catcher Jake Taylor, played with gruff charm by Tom Berenger; wild pitcher Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn, a role that became one of Charlie Sheen's most iconic performances; voodoo-practising power hitter Pedro Cerrano, hilariously portrayed by Dennis Haysbert; and the crafty veteran pitcher Eddie Harris, brought to life by Chelcie Ross. Each character is more than just a caricature, offering depth and development as they confront their personal and professional demons. The brilliance of "Major League" lies in its ability to balance comedy with genuine sports drama. The film's humor is both slapstick and smart, never shying away from the absurdity of its premise but grounding its jokes in the reality of baseball and the personalities of its characters. The scenes of the team's disastrous early games are filled with laugh-out-loud moments, from Vaughn's uncontrollable fastballs to Cerrano's struggles with breaking balls. Yet, as the season progresses, so does the team's camaraderie and skill, leading to a series of increasingly thrilling games that culminate in a high-stakes showdown for the division title. The movie also shines in its depiction of the baseball world, capturing the gritty charm of a struggling team and the passionate loyalty of its fan base. The Cleveland setting adds to this authenticity, with the city's love for the Indians being a central theme. The film's soundtrack, featuring tracks like "Wild Thing," enhances the mood, perfectly blending with the action on screen. Moreover, "Major League" explores themes of redemption and resilience. Each character has something to prove, whether it's Taylor's quest to win back his ex-girlfriend or Vaughn's struggle to control his pitches and temper. Their journeys are as much about personal growth as they are about baseball, making their eventual success feel earned and satisfying. The film cleverly subverts sports movie clichés, offering a fresh take on the genre that has inspired countless imitations but few equals. The performances are another highlight, with the cast displaying a remarkable chemistry that makes their interactions feel genuine and engaging. Berenger's portrayal of Taylor is both sympathetic and inspiring, embodying the washed-up player who sees the team as his last shot at glory. Sheen's Vaughn is the perfect blend of wild energy and vulnerability, making his transformation from a prison-league pitcher to a major-league star compelling. Haysbert's Cerrano provides some of the film's funniest moments, but also moments of unexpected depth. The supporting cast, including Corbin Bernsen as the primadonna third baseman Roger Dorn and Margaret Whitton as the scheming owner Phelps, round out the ensemble with standout performances."Major League" has not only entertained audiences for decades but has also left a lasting impact on the sports film genre. Its blend of humour, heart, and baseball has made it a classic, enduring in popularity and influence. The film's legacy is evident in its sequels and the countless references in popular culture, cementing its place in the pantheon of great sports comedies. In conclusion, "Major League" is more than just a movie about baseball. It's a story about underdogs fighting against the odds, about teamwork and determination, and about finding redemption and purpose. Its humour, character development, and exciting sports action make it a film that continues to win over audiences, whether they're baseball aficionados or just in search of a good laugh. With its memorable characters, quotable lines, and heartwarming story, "Major League" remains a home run in the world of sports comedies, a testament to the enduring appeal of the underdog story. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Ward; starring Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen, Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes, and Bob Uecker. Plot Summary: Former Las Vegas showgirl Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton) inherits the Cleveland Indians baseball team from her deceased husband. Phelps hates Cleveland and wants to relocate the team to Miami, but to do so she needs attendance for the entire season to be below 800,000. Determined to put together the worst team in the major leagues so there is no fan interest, Phelps hires Lou Brown (James Gammon) to manage a team of nobodys and has-beens including overpriced Roger Dorn (Corbin Bersen), voodoo-practicing Cuban-defector, Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert), catcher Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger), a brash speedster, Willie Mays Hays (Wesley Snipes), and a former felon pitcher, Rick Vaughn (Charlie Sheen). Lisa and Charles Adrian round off their holiday season with one of the most beloved rom coms ever made. Which, they decide, might not actually be a rom com. This episode was not supposed to be a take down of Sleepless In Seattle but that is what it has turned into. Sorry not sorry.   Sleepless In Seattle Year: 1993 Screenplay by: Nora Ephron, David S. Ward, Jeff Arch Based on a story by: Jeff Arch Director: Nora Ephron Stars: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Bill Pullman, Ross Malinger, Rosie O'Donnell   Show notes:   Straightforwardly plumping for magic over security and for fantasy over reality, Sleepless In Seattle is for sure a film about yearning and it is certainly very funny and beautifully written and well-made, but is it romantic? We prepare to upset literally millions of fans by arguing that this film is not the rom com that it purports to be and that it is, in fact, about a woman who abuses her position as a journalist to stalk a man who is still mourning his dead wife.   We mention the films An Affair To Remember (1957) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050105/), Joe Versus The Volcano (1990) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099892/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), While You Were Sleeping (1995) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114924/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1), When Harry Met Sally (1989) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098635/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), You've Got Mail (1998) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0128853/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) and Fatal Attraction (1987) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093010/).   We record these episodes over the internet. When you think of great movies about major league baseball, there aren’t too many to choose from. “Bull Durham” was about the minor leagues. “Field of Dreams” was about ghosts of former players meeting on a cornfield in Iowa to play again. “The Sandlot” and “Bad News Bears” were about kids and their love for the national pastime. And “A League of Their Own” and “The Natural” captured baseball, but baseball of the past. In 1989 only one film was able to capture major league baseball in modern times. And that film took the longsuffering Cleveland Indians all the way to the playoffs and “Major League” became a bonafide hit movie for baseball fans everywhere. On this episode, Tim Williams shares his memories and guest co-host Charlie Cotter shares his first-time watch reactions of this 80's comedy classic.  They also share favorite lines, characters, scenes, and behind the scenes trivia along the way. Here are additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: - Pedro Cerrano, according to author and director David S. Ward, is partially based on Orlando Cepeda and Wade Boggs, who would superstitiously eat chicken before every game. - Willie Mays Hays, according to Ward, is based on Rickey Henderson. - Ryan Duren was the inspiration for the character Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn, according to Ward. - Eddie Harris appears to be inspired by Gaylord Perry, who was well known for using outside substances to enhance his pitches. - Jake Taylor may be inspired by Carlton Fisk, a catcher who had a long career with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. Lou Brown mentions early on that Taylor was an All-Star in Boston. - According to David S. Ward, Wesley Snipes was not a very skilled baseball player in real life, never having played much of it before. Ward said Snipes was so awful at throwing a baseball that they did not have any scenes of him throwing a ball.  - Many tricks were used to make the actors seem like they were as good as their characters. For example, the pitching mound in a real baseball stadium is 60'6" away from the home plate, but to give the impression that Charlie Sheen's 85 mph fastball was traveling 100mph, they moved the mound up 10 feet and shot from behind the plate so the viewer wouldn't notice the distance difference. Also, all Wesley Snipes' running scenes are shown in slow motion to give the impression that he is running faster than he actually is. - In the scene where Jake invades Lynn's party, one of the guests asks how much Jake makes in the Majors. He replies, "I make the league minimum." At the time (1989) the MLB salary minimum was $68,000. Average household income in 1990 was roughly $30,000. So he was making a very respectable double-the-average household income. I talk. I drink. I movie. About Major League 2: The Cleveland Indians, an endearing assortment of oddballs who improbably won the division championship last season, have since lost their edge due to personal pursuits and the excesses of fame. Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) does lucrative endorsements, but his killer fastball is gone, while once-aggressive slugger Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert) has become a laid-back Buddhist. But, as the players realize they've all gone astray, they rally for a shot at the World Series. Initial release: December 3, 1994 (South Korea) Director: David S. We chat about the backgrounds of Ward and his all-star (at the time) cast as well as discuss Ward's lifetime love of the Cleveland Indians and why he chose to write and direct this movie. We talk about the Indians and their long and sordid history (and yes, Andy even works his great-great uncle back into the conversation). And we discuss why this film still works so well, but also why some of it doesn't work, namely the music that dates it. It's a blast to reconnect with old memories and talk about this movie again. Listen in, baseball and baseball movie lovers!

"Juuuuust a bit outside." That's right, ladies and gentlemen -- we're switching things up a bit this week on Rash Pixel's "Movies We Like" -- instead of "Bull Durham" as promised, we're pulling a switcheroo and flipflopping that with 1989's baseball comedy classic, "Major League." Sure, it's a bit dated, but man, it's still a fun and funny film. Join us -- Pete Wright and Andy Nelson -- this week as we talk about this comedy gem from David S. Mon, Nov 13 2006 Mister Ron's Basement #546 Mister Ron returns from his hiatus with a unique find -- stories from the 1905 collection, 'The Philosophy of Johnnie the Gent -- A Collection of Humorous Slang Stories' by Frank Hutchison. Today's tale, 'The Story of a First-Past-the-Post Frame-Up That Proved A Boomerang' has a number of elements that seem strangely similar to the movie 'The Sting.' We are assuming this is a coincidence, but your comments are welcome! Since posting this episode, I have discovered that 'The Sting' screenwriter David S. Ward was heavily influenced by David Maurer's 1940 book, 'The Big Con.' After reading that book, I discovered that much of what passes for humorous fiction in 'Johnnie the Gent' is actually highly authentic, well researched tales based on the activities of con men back in 1905! Perhaps Maurer himself was inspired by "Johnnie the Gent.' Time: approx twelve minutes The Mister Ron's Basement Full Catalog can be found at: http://ronevry.com/Mister_Rons_Full_Catalog.html
